UN General Assembly Votes To Allow Gays To Be Executed Without Cause | The New Civil Rights Movement

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a United Nations vote that removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions. In other words, the UN General Assembly this week voted to allow LGBT people to be executed without cause. According to the International Gay and Lesbians Human Rights Commission, the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian issues removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution addressing extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions this past week in a vote that was overwhelming represented by a majority of African, Middle East and Carribean nations. For a UN committee that addresses human rights questions that affect people all over the world, by removing protections for LGBT persons from a category of arbitrary executions, belies the objective and purpose of a committee whose focus this year is “on the examination of human rights questions,” according to its website. A number of LGBT human rights advocates were surprised by the decidedly lop-sided vote, including Mark Bromley, the chair of the Council on Global Equality, a Washington, D.C. based organization that brings together human rights organizations, LGBT groups, philanthropists and corporate leaders to ”encourage a clearer and stronger American voice on human rights concerns impacting LGBT communities around the world.” “I was very surprised by the vote,” said Bromley, who had been in contact with the United States Mission to the United Nations delegation all day Tuesday, who were trying to beat back efforts to strip sexual orientation from the resolution. But because the U.S. supports capital punishment, they usually abstain from voting on this resolution, thus they are in a weakened position with one arm tied behind their backs, according to Bromley. “But that said, the State Department did everything possible to beat back the efforts to repeal protections for LGBT persons,” he added. For further analysis into this story, read Tanya Domi’s latest piece at The New Civil Rights Movement, “UN Vote Allowing Gays To Be Executed Result Of Political, Religious Fundamentalism.” The U.K. gay rights and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said, “This is a shameful day in United Nations history. It gives a de facto green light to the on-going murder of LGBT people by homophobic regimes, death squads and vigilantes. They will take comfort from the fact that the UN does not endorse the protection of LGBT people against hate-motivated murder. “The UN vote is in direct defiance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees equal treatment, non-discrimination and the right to life. What is the point of the UN if it refuses to uphold its own humanitarian values and declarations? “This vote is partly the result of a disturbing homophobic alliance between mostly African and Arab states, often inspired by religious fundamentalism. LGBT people in these countries frequently suffer severe persecution.” In an issued statement explaining the U.S. vote, a representative of the U.S. UN delegation said, At the outset, let me say that the United States strongly agrees with and appreciates the cosponsors’ efforts to retain language specifically condemning ESAs [extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions] targeting vulnerable groups, particularly members of the LGBT community, and we were dismayed that this reference could not survive an unfriendly amendment. Bromley expressed great disappointment in losing all the Southern African countries on the vote, including Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Nambia and South Africa, the latter, whose domestic laws and record on LGBT civil rights have held great regard throughout the world. Nonetheless, according to Bromley, from the days of former President Thabo Mbeki through present day leader Jacob Zuma, South Africa has been recalcitrant in its opposition to extending human rights to LGBT persons within international legal structures. Another region that unanimously supported the removal of sexual orientation from the resolution were the Carribean nations. Most noteworthy was the support from the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Bromley indicated that the U.S. and human rights groups in the hemisphere have opportunities to forcefully advance LGBT rights through the Organization of American States (OAS) and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Brazil and Uruguay are international leaders on LGBT rights and can play a constructive role in bringing Carribean nations into the OAS fold on these issues, according to Bromley. Middle East countries that principally observe the Muslim religion and its practices, as well as countries whose politics are dominated by Christian fundamentalists, generally oppose LGBT and women’s rights at the UN. Even the United States has yet to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Indeed, CEDAW has the most “reservations” filed by the most member states of any international human rights convention on record. A reservation is a statement made by a State which it purports to exclude or alter the legal effect of certain provisions of a treaty in their application. According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, A reservation may enable a State to participate in a multilateral treaty in which it would otherwise be unable or unwilling to do so. States can make reservations to a treaty when they sign, ratify, accept, approve or accede to it. When a State makes a reservation upon signing, it must confirm the reservation upon ratification, acceptance or approval…a reservation cannot be contrary to the object and purpose of the treaty. As an LGBT activist or an observer of UN and international politics, it is important for interested persons to understand that religion and culture play a major role in persuading internal bodies to not extend certain human rights to LGBT persons and women on religious and cultural grounds. These dynamics have created an international debate between advocates of “cultural relativism“–those who assert primacy of cultural values over human rights and those who are “ universalists,” who believe rights trump cultural concerns. The United States Mission to the United Nations has an explanation of the U.S.’s vote. Editor’s note: Thanks to Andr

‘Draw Mohammed Day’ cartoonist goes into hiding / changes identity

You may have noticed that Molly Norris' comic is not in the paper this week. That's because there is no more Molly. The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, “going ghost”: moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program—except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It's all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” cartoon. Norris views the situation with her customary sense of the world's complexity, and absurdity. When FBI agents, on a recent visit, instructed her to always keep watch for anyone following her, she responded, “Well, at least it'll keep me from being so self-involved!” It was, she says, the first time the agents managed a smile. She likens the situation to cancer—it might basically be nothing, it might be urgent and serious, it might go away and never return, or it might pop up again when she least expects it. We're hoping the religious bigots go into full and immediate remission, and we wish her the best. added by: Stoneyroad

AUSTRALIA: Pool visitors told to cover up for Ramadan

FAMILIES in Victoria are being ordered to cover up before attending a public event to avoid offending Muslims during next year's Ramadan. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has approved a ban on uncovered shoulders and thighs for a community event to be held at the Dandenong Oasis, a municipal pool. “Participants aged 10 and over must ensure their bodies are covered from waist to knee and the entire torso extending to the upper arms,” a request by Dandenong City Council and the YMCA states in an exemption application to the Equal Opportunities Act. “Participants must not wear transparent clothing.” The request has been approved by VCAT and applies to a family event to be held at the pool next August. “The applicant intends this to be an event where people of all races and religions and ages may attend, use the Centre's facilities and socialise together,” VCAT notes. “The holy month of Ramadan has a particular focus on families and the applicant wishes to encourage families to attend and socialise together with others. “The minimum dress requirements are set having regard to the sensitivities of Muslims who wish to participate in the event.” The ban on skimpy clothes will apply between 6.15 and 8.15pm on August 21 next year, a time when the pool is closed to the public and normally used by a Muslim women's swimming group. The ban was yesterday compared by the Human Rights Commissioner Helen Szoke to a ban on thongs in a pub. “Matters such as this are not easy to resolve and require a balance to be achieved between competing rights and obligations,” she said. “Dress codes are not uncommon: eg singlets, jeans, thongs etc in pubs/hotels.” Sherene Hassan, vice-president of the Islamic Society of Victoria, said she didn't support the dress restrictions. “My preference would be that no dress code is stipulated,” Ms Hassan said. But Liberty Victoria said the ban was reasonable because the event was to be held out of hours. A spokeswoman for the City of Greater Dandenong said the ban would help Muslims feel part of the community. added by: eden49

AZ Border Sheriff: ‘I Have About As Much Regard for the U.N. as I Do the Vermin’

Sheriff Larry Dever, whose officers patrol Cochise County along the border between Arizona and Mexico, said he finds it “amazing” that the U.S. State Department would refer the recently passed immigration law in his state to the United Nations Human Rights Council for review. “Well, it’s just amazing to me,” Dever told CNSNews.com. “Course, I have about as much regard for the U.N. as I do the vermin that hides in the rocks around my house here and reaches out and tries to bite me every now and then.” The Bush administration refused to join the U.N. Human Rights Council, citing lax membership criteria that allowed countries with poor human rights records to sit on the council, including countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Russia, Cuba, Pakistan, Tunisia and Egypt. The Obama administration joined the council, citing its imperfections but made claims that U.S. efforts could change the organization for the better. Now, the U.S. State Department is asking the council to review possible human rights violations that supposedly could occur under the Arizona’s new law against illegal immigration. The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) has also filed a lawsuit challenging the Arizona law. “Where does this end?” Dever told CNSNews.com. “Why the Department of Justice intervened in this case to begin with was beyond comprehension,” Dever said, referring to the DOJ lawsuit, which claims that the Arizona law violated the federal government’s exclusive right to enforce federal immigration laws. Dever said the State Department move, however, is in keeping with the Obama administration’s reluctance to enforce federal immigration law and that it is probably seeking support from the United Nations to further its agenda. “It’s indicative of the personality of the entire administration and what they are trying to get done,” Dever said. “This is just further evidence.” Dever added that the results of the U.N. review would not have any impact for those with boots on the ground in Arizona who, on a daily basis, fight the flow of illegal immigrants across the porous U.S. border. “They can take their declarations and their findings and pack them all up and keep them in the United Nations because we really don’t care what they think,” Dever said. In its report to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, the State Department, headed by Secretary Hillary Clinton, said the following: “A recent Arizona law, S.B. 1070, has generated significant attention and debate at home and around the world. The issue is being addressed in a court action that argues that the federal government has the authority to set and enforce immigration law. This action is ongoing; parts of the law are currently enjoined.” added by: im1mjrpain

Philip Markoff, Accused Craigslist Killer, Commits Suicide in Jail

In a shocking conclusion to an already tragic story, the man known as the Craigslist Killer committed suicide in a Boston jail, according to authorities. Philip Markoff, a former medical student who was accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist, was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday. He was pronounced dead at about 10:15 a.m. The death is still being investigated, but Markoff was alone in his jail cell. Evidence indicates he took his own life , according to a statement by both Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County D.A. Daniel F. Conley. Philip Markoff was found suffocated with a plastic bag over his head . In June, Markoff pleaded not guilty to charges that in April he lured masseuse Julissa Brisman to a Boston hotel, then bound, beat and fatally shot her. His attorney, John Salsberg, said Sunday, “I’m shocked and saddened by the news” of Markoff’s death. The accused criminal was only 24 years old. Back in April, Markoff was placed on suicide watch after officials expressed concern that this exact scenario would happen. Sadly, it appears it did.

Michael Caine Says Batman 3 Shooting in April

Never trust Gary Oldman again . While on the press circuit for The Book of Eli in 2009, Commissioner Gordon told reporters that Christopher Nolan would begin shooting Batman 3 this year with an eye toward a 2011 release. Bzzzt! Not according to Michael Caine. The coolest actor alive — seriously, right guys? — told reporters at the London premiere of Inception that Nolan was planning to shoot his sequel to The Dark Knight in April. Take that with the giant grain of salt it deserves, but hey — an April shoot could mean the finished product will be hit theaters just in time for the superhero apocalypse in the summer of 2012. Andrew Garfield, get ready to shake in your Spidey-tights. After the jump, video of Caine — who also offers a slight spoiler on his role in Inception .

Vince Young Arrested in Strip Club Fight, Asks God to Please Prevent NFL Suspension

Following a melee at a local strip joint, Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young was issued a Class C assault citation in Dallas, Texas, early Sunday morning. No arrests are planned and the former University of Texas star’s citation , while for a misdemeanor charge, likely will entail a fine that he will pay and that’s it. The incident is said to have occurred at a Dallas strip club early Sunday morning after a man at the venue insulted, verbally or otherwise, Young’s alma mater. A Dallas police source said that Vince Young was attempting to exchange cash, possibly for single dollar bills, at Club Onyx when all hell suddenly broke loose. Apparently, someone made disparaging remarks about the Longhorns, and then flashed an upside-down “Hook ‘em, Horns” hand gesture. A brawl ensued. Vince Young hopes the Almighty won’t let the NFL suspend him . Today, the NFL star apologized to his teammates for the whole strip club fight, noting that he’s praying to God that the NFL won’t “come down hard.” After practice today, Young said, “I just made a mistake, I made a big mistake even being there and I let that guy provoke me into doing what I did.” “I pray to God that [league Commissioner] Roger Goodell doesn’t come down hard on me, because I definitely want to be here for my teammates.” Right, because 1. God saw the fight, and 2. Even if He did, He’d be more concerned about Young suiting up this fall than any pleas for forgiveness. Check out a video of the Vince Young fight here … Vince Young Fight

Meet Stephenie Meyer’s New ‘Eclipse’ Vampires In ‘Bree Tanner’

Several newborns from ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’ could appear in the ‘Twilight’ film on June 30. By Terri Schwartz Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” Photo: Hachette Book Group With so much attention on the fact that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” swept the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, it is almost easy to forget that there was another exciting “Twilight”-related event this weekend: the release of “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” on Saturday. If you couldn’t get your hands on Stephenie Meyer’s new novella in the store over the past two days, it’s available to read online for free from Monday (June 7) until July 5 at BreeTanner.com . “Short Second Life” is more than just a companion story for “The Twilight Saga.” Meyer gave Jodelle Ferland and director David Slade the backstory of this character, so it seems pretty certain that some of Bree’s side of the story will make its way into the film when it opens on June 30. While Bree and Victoria’s henchman Riley were characters that readers met from Bella’s perspective in “Eclipse,” “Short Second Life” introduces a few key members of the newborn army that may get some screen time in the upcoming film. Bree Tanner After running away from home because her father beat her, Bree was so hungry, all Riley had to do was promise her a burger to trick her into becoming a vampire. She’s not sure if she was 15 or 16 when she was turned, three months before the battle in “Eclipse.” Raoul and Kristie Of the twenty-odd newborns Bree is living with in “Short Second Life,” these are the two that are most likely to appear in the movie. They each lead their own “gang” of newborns, with Raoul controlling most of the male vampires and Kristie directing most of the females. Neither is physically described in the book, so it’s not clear exactly what they look like, but from the exclusive photo MTV received of the newborns following Riley out of a body of water, it can be inferred that they are the male and female vampires flanking him. Freaky Fred The two newborns that Bree befriends in “Short Second Life” are a bit less likely to make it into the final cut of “Eclipse.” Fred, a tall, muscular vampire with curly blond hair who Bree guesses to be around college-age, has the special ability to be able to repulse those around him, and can slip by unnoticed by making it so that no one can lay their eyes on him. He protects Bree this way and leaves the rest of the newborn pack before they confront the Cullens in the final battle. Diego The clear-headed newborn teams up with Bree early on in “Short Second Life” and the two develop a chaste but sweet romantic relationship over the course of one day. Diego is older than most of the others (by a few months) and not as savagely driven by his thirst. He’s described as having “dark, dense, curly hair, big, wide eyes and really full lips,” and — like all of Meyer’s vampires — he’s very, very pretty. SPOILER : His second life barely lasts longer than hers does, and he doesn’t make it to the final battle against the Cullens. A few other newborns named in the novella: Kevin, one of Raoul’s lackeys, and Sara and Jen, who follow Kristie. None of them received physical descriptions in the novella, so unless they are referred to by name, it will be hard to pin them down amid the rest of the army. There is also a vampire whom Bree calls “the blond Spider-man kid” because he talks about the comic book hero and climbs walls like him in one scene. As anyone who has read “Eclipse” knows, Victoria’s army doesn’t fare well against the Cullens, and neither does Bree. Still, her novella offers a unique opportunity for fans to get to know those that had once just been nameless enemies, making for a more poignant battle when the third “Twilight” film hits the big screen starting June 30.
