Meet the Guy Who Worked On Both Avengers

Remember that 1998 movie adaptation of the old British TV show The Avengers , starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman? Me neither, but set artist Stephen Morahan does — if only because he was reminded after working on this week’s Marvel blockbuster of the same name: “[I]t looks a bit odd on your resume. So, I made this before, now it’s something completely different. And when you talk about it, people don’t even know about the other film. it didn’t do very well. I mean, that’s another big difference, too. The original Avengers was a big flop. It bombed.” [ Huffington Post ]

Kevin Spacey’s Chinese Buddy-Superhero Movie Inseparable Looks… Interesting

It’s been nearly two and a half years since word first came of Kevin Spacey heading off to China, where the Oscar winner and noted cell-phone critic would become the first major star to lead a fully Chinese-funded production. That production, Inseparable , finally has a teaser on the Web, and it’s… interesting . The given tagline — “A young man with problems at home and work befriends his odd neighbor” — is vague enough, but nothing quite prepares you for the last shot… …unless you happen to have previously had a look at the new posters. Thoughts, anyone? Ha! Trick question — your head exploded. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

‘Obiwan Kenobi’ Busted For Hit and Run

“A California man who legally changed his name to ‘Obiwan Kenobi’ was released from jail yesterday after spending five days in custody following his arrest on a hit-and-run count. Kenobi, 37, has been charged with leaving the scene of a five-car accident last month in Roseville. According to cops, Kenobi’s reckless driving triggered the chain-reaction collision. Formerly known as Benjamin Cale Feit, Kenobi changed his name in 1999 in response to a radio stunt tied to the release of Star Wars: Episode I. A California station offered $1000 to the first listener to legally change their name to that of the fictional Jedi master.” Nice work! He’s got a ways to go before catching up with Yoda’s four DUI’s, but still. [ The Smoking Gun via Geekologie ]

Too Little, Too Late: Burger King Issues An Apology For Targeting Black People With Coonerific Chicken Wrap Ad

Burger King is getting grilled for a Web only spot that has black consumers condemning the commercial across the Internet . The ad features Mary J. Blige shucking and jiving about the wonders of BK’s new crispy chicken wraps: The reaction, to the Blige spot from African-American Web sites and bloggers may have setback any attempt to get more black consumers to patronize the chain. The commercial was produced by Burger King’s recently hired general market ad agency, Mother. Initial criticism came from black sites like Madame Noir, whose writer, Renay Alize, called the commercial “buffoonery.” Blige defended herself from attacks by saying she never saw or approved the final creative execution. “I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence,” said the singer in a statement. “Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip, so I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw to go out.” Burger King pulled the spot but said that its removal was due to licensing concerns, not public reaction. In a statement the company said, “We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon.” Ironically, Burger King has, for the last year, been in the process of hiring an African-American advertising agency to craft its message for black consumers. While the company has said that it expected to have a decision earlier this year, any assignment given to a black ad shop now will come with the burden of un-doing the damage created by the Mother ad agency. According to industry figures, black consumers spend about $1.1 billion with Burger King. Burger King’s ad spending in black-oriented media — about $6 million annually — has been declining in recent years, trails spending by competitors McDonald’s, KFC, and Wendy’s. Sorry BK, it’s too little, too damn late. This goes for all other companies who want to go after the African American dollar, stop the coonin’ and bafoonin’ because we aren’t buying it! ‘The River’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics say the found-footage TV series, while scary, suffers from poor writing and one really annoying character. By Eric Ditzian Eloise Mumford and Joe Anderson in “The River” Photo: American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. “The River” carries a sense of pop culture inevitably in its shaky, grainy found-footage escapades. After “Paranormal Activity” resuscitated the horror subgenre with its wide release in 2009 — grossing $193 million worldwide and spawning two sequels and a slew of variously successful imitators — it was only a matter of time until found-footage scares arrived on network TV. Thankfully, that arrival comes courtesy of “Paranormal” mastermind Oren Peli . “The River,” premiering on ABC on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, borrows liberally from Peli’s hit film franchise (as well as from past network hits like “Lost”) in a midseason replacement that sees a crew venture into the Amazon to locate a missing explorer named Emmet Cole. The question, of course, is whether “The River” can replicate the successes of its wildly popular forbearers (or, perhaps, the been-there-found-that disappointments of other genre copycats). Critics, at this point, are split. Some have found the series satisfyingly scary. Others have faulted the show’s weak character development. For those critiques and more, read on for a deep dive into reviews of “The River.” The Storyline “[‘The River’] is a nifty supernatural adventure tale set in mysterious river-riven regions of the uncharted Amazon. Topographically speaking, it is ‘Lost’ inside-out. The story is this: Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), a world-beloved, globe-trotting ‘Crocodile Hunter’ sort, has gone missing. Six months after his disappearance, an emergency beacon begins suddenly transmitting and his former crew and co-stars, including his wife and son and the daughter of his also-missing cameraman, head into the jungle to find him, with TV cameras rolling. Emmet’s television catch phrase, ‘There’s magic out there,’ will prove to be presciently literal.” — Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times The Comparisons “There are so many moments in ABC’s ‘The River’ when you want to congratulate its creators for trying a little more blatantly to be ‘Lost’ than others will admit, and there are other times when you think, ‘Wow, ‘Paranormal Activity’ on a weekly basis, with a touch of ‘Heart of Darkness,’ might be interesting, too.’ Quick camera cuts, people in peril, freaky and scary happenings — what’s not to like? Put them together, and you have a series that cobbles together a pretty strong rooting interest. We all need a show like this on the small screen again. But is there really a weekly series here?” — Tom Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter The Writing “[W]hen the characters start to talk to each other? ‘The River’ just feels like one poorly written TV show. ‘The River’ is swimming in bad dialogue and clich

‘The River’ Is ‘Paranormal Activity’ Meets ‘X-Files,’ Eloise Mumford Says

‘It’s groundbreaking TV,’ actress tells MTV News of the found-footage series, which premieres tonight. By Josh Wigler Eloise Mumford in “The River” Photo: American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. There’s magic out there … you just need to ford “The River” to find it. “Paranormal Activity” mastermind Oren Peli is back with another found-footage fright-fest, but this time, it’s playing out on the small screen in the form of “The River,” a new supernatural series debuting on ABC on Tuesday (February 7). “The River” stars “Star Trek” actor Bruce Greenwood as Dr. Emmet Cole, a television personality and famed explorer who vanishes without a trace while seeking magic in the depths of the Amazon. Six months later, new evidence regarding Emmet’s whereabouts comes to light, leading his wife, Tess (Leslie Hope), and son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), to the Amazon with a television crew in tow. What they find there is darker and more inexplicable than anything they expected — and as promised by the missing Dr. Cole, there is indeed magic out there, deadlier than the rabbits-from-hats variety. Actress Eloise Mumford, who stars on the show as adventurer Lena Landry, dropped by MTV News this week to talk about the premiere of “The River,” and why it’s a television event that fans of found-footage absolutely can’t miss. “It’s ‘Paranormal Activity’ meets ‘X-Files,’ ” she told MTV about the premise of the show. “The conceit is that it’s all shot as a TV show — you’re aware that it’s not just a TV show on TV, but that the whole thing is being shot as a TV show within a TV show. It’s really fun, because it’s all shot as a documentary. You see the camera guys; they’re characters. Sometimes we had up to 13 cameras rolling at once. It’s groundbreaking TV in that sense. It’s taking this age of technology right now and taking full advantage of that.” Indeed, though found-footage is a prominent part of pop culture today, it’s a device that’s rarely explored in scripted genre television. Mumford said that the unique perspective will help set “The River” apart from other shows currently on TV. “If you’re flipping through the channels, you’re going to go, ‘Whoa!’ It’s such a different look,” she said. “And the storytelling of it is so much faster. There’s really unique points of view in all of it.” “It’s in line with the youth of today,” she added of what makes “The River” relevant. “We’re used to shooting our own stuff on our cellphones. We’re used to capturing everything. To be able to have that as a TV show is going to be really fun for people to watch.” “The River” flows on ABC tonight (February 7) at at 9 ET/PT (8 Central). Here’s Your Ultimate Packing Playlist! The researchers found that black women are more likely to be concerned about possible physical limitations caused by overweight and obesity, rather than the potential psychological consequences. In the study, investigators analyzed data collected between 2000 and 2010 from 172 black and 171 white obese women. The women filled out a questionnaire that examined five quality-of-life areas: physical function, self-esteem, sexual life, public distress and work. Study: Immigrants Founded Half Of Top U.S. Start-Up Companies Among all the women, quality-of-life fell as body mass index (BMI) rose. BMI is a measurement of overweight and obesity. However, at similar BMIs, black women consistently had higher quality-of-life scores than white women and self-esteem was particularly high among black women, according to Tiffany Cox, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues.
