Michael Jackson’s Mom Sues Concert Promoter AEG Live

Lawsuit allegedly filed by pop star’s mother claims AEG Live neglected his medical care, according to an online report. By Kara Warner Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images The litigation that has surrounded the tragedy of Michael Jackson’s untimely death continues. Katherine Jackson, on behalf of and along with Michael Jackson’s children, has filed suit against AEG Live, the promoter for the late superstar’s 50-date concert residency . Jackson’s mother charges the company breached its contractual agreement to provide medical care for her son and argues they were negligent in hiring controversial doctor Conrad Murray . According to TMZ , Katherine’s filing claims AEG’s contract with Michael “created a legal duty for AEG to act reasonably toward the physical well-being of Michael Jackson.” The website also points out that the lawsuit lists Katherine Jackson as a Guardian ad Litem, or legal representative, for Michael’s three children, which Katherine is not. Jackson’s mother is in fact only the trio’s guardian. The gossip site suggests that the mistake, along with the fact that Katherine’s reps know nothing about the lawsuit, suggests she is not actively involved in this case. In other MJ-related lawsuit news, Conrad Murray’s attorneys asked a federal judge on Wednesday (September 15) to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the singer’s father, Joe Jackson, because he is not a beneficiary of the late singer’s estate. The Associated Press reported that Murray’s lawyers equated Joe’s lawsuit to a “press-release that is intended to prejudice and inflame the jury pool and the public.” The motion will reportedly be considered by a federal judge during a hearing scheduled for Oct. 18. Joe Jackson sued Murray on June 25, the one-year anniversary of his son’s death in 2009 at age 50. His lawsuit claimed the doctor withheld vital information about Jackson’s medical history — including a list of all the drugs he had administered to his patient — from paramedics who responded to a 911 call, as well as to doctors at UCLA Medical Center who attempted to revive the singer. At the autopsy for Jackson, the complaint also alleges that Murray “said nothing” about having administered the surgical anesthetic propofol, which the coroner concluded caused Jackson’s death. The lawsuit seeks more than $75,000 in damages. ‘Machete’ Slices Competition At Friday Box Office

‘The American’ is hot on the heels of the action flick. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jessica Alba in “Machete” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Machete” ($3.9 million) #2 “The American” ($3.8 million) #3 “Takers” ($3 million) #4 “The Last Exorcism” ($2.3 million) #5 “Going the Distance” ($2.2 million) “Machete” was a cut above the competition in a close Friday box-office race crowded with new releases. According to reports , the sexed-up, action-packed Robert Rodriguez-directed film took first place with $3.9 million on Friday. However, the star-heavy caper, which boasts performances from Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and a buzzed-about screen turn from Lindsay Lohan , just barely slipped past The American.” The George Clooney thriller, which revolves around an assassin who lands in Italy for a final job, kicked off the weekend with $3.8 million. Friday’s haul bumps the film’s cumulative take to $7 million since the movie landed in theaters on Wednesday. Rounding out an action-heavy top three, “Takers” pulled in $3 million during its second Friday in theaters. Although the film opened at #1 last weekend, it appears news of the film’s star T.I.’s arrest hasn’t completely doused the fire of the heist flick. The film also boasts appearances from Idris Elba and singer Chris Brown, who has recently triumphed on the music charts with his single “Deuces.” The movie has made an estimated $29.5 million since landing in theaters. The horror movie “The Last Exorcism,” which nabbed the second-place slot in a photo-finish box-office race against “Takers” last week, slipped to the #4 spot. The creep-fest raked in $2.3 million during its second Friday on screens, which nudged its total gross to $27 million. The rom-com “Going the Distance,” starring Drew Barrymore and real-life on-and-off beau Justin Long , debuted in fifth place. The movie, which follows a young couple working to sustain the spark in their long-distance relationship, scored $2.2 million in ticket sales. Former ‘Canadian Idol’ Contestant Arrested In Terrorist Plot

Khurram Sher, charged in connection with a bombing plot in Canada, tried out for the show in 2008. By Gil Kaufman Khurram Sayed Sher on “Canadian Idol” Photo: CTV A Montreal man authorities have charged with conspiracy in a terrorist plot to bomb sites in Canada and abroad tried out for “Canadian Idol” with a moonwalking, robot popping, off-key version of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” in 2008 that amused judges, but has confused authorities. Khurram Sayed Sher made a bid for the Northern version of “Idol” two years ago and was featured in the televised audition rounds as one of the lesser talents, with the Winnipeg Free Press reporting that he got a thumbs-up for his dance moves from the judges, but no love for his shaky vocals. “That was some genuine crap singing,” judge Zack Werner said at the time. “It’s sort of absurd. It is a little weird,” said Jake Gold, one of the judges on the Canadian show. “He was a funny guy. At the same time, it’s not a laughing matter.” Sher, a native of Pakistan, appeared on the show wearing a traditional shimmering green salwar kameez outfit, typically worn in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and a Pashtun hat and speaking in a thick accent that disappeared when he sang. He told judges he was from Pakistan and came to Canada in 2005. But those who knew him when he attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal told the Toronto Star that Sher was born in Montreal, had no accent and seemed very “westernized.” One unnamed person who reportedly knew him well said he used the fake Pakistani accent and wore the traditional clothes as a goof. “He did it as a joke,” the friend said. Sher, 28, a hockey player and father of three, is a pathologist who graduated from one of Canada’s most prestigious medical schools, and was a humanitarian aid worker who helped earthquake survivors in Pakistan in 2005. He was arrested on Tuesday after Canadian authorities alleged he was part of a terrorist conspiracy. He was named in court documents as being part of a conspiracy in Ottawa to “knowingly facilitate terrorist activities” in Canada and abroad, including a plot to build and detonate remote-controlled bombs in Canada.

‘American Idol’: We Have Never Used AutoTune

Controversy over use of pitch-correction software on ‘X Factor’ causes show to release statement. By Gil Kaufman David Archuleta Photo: Fox In the wake of the scandal over the use of the pitch-correcting software AutoTune on the season premiere of the British singing reality show “X-Factor,” the producers of “American Idol” released a statement denying that they had altered contestants’ vocals during the competition. “We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the ‘American Idol’ competition,” unnamed producers of the show said in a statement released Thursday, according to the Associated Press . No allegations had been made that “Idol” had employed the technology, but the blowback from the “X-Factor” scandal was so bad that it seems “Idol” brass felt they needed to nip any suggestions in the bud. As the AP noted, singers on “Idol” are often criticized for sounding “pitchy”; during the show’s most recent season, mop-haired finalist Tim Urban was often so clearly out of tune that his run on the show surprised many longtime watchers. There have been other mini-scandals on “Idol,” such as the admission last year that the group sing-alongs that begin the results shows are lip-synched . But no one has suggested that performances that count toward the competition are tweaked. In response to the controversy, judge and producer Simon Cowell said, “people have got to be able to trust ‘The X Factor’ … we are not faking anything,” and promised that AutoTune will not be used again on the show. The Daily Mail reported that Cowell spent the week speaking to producers of the show — which he will bring to the U.S. in 2011 — and that an episode originally intended to air on September 4 will be shown this Saturday in an effort to move beyond the doctored-vocals scandal. Producers of the show claimed that AutoTune was only used to clean up sound from the audition footage, which is shot in a studio where there are more than 40 microphones in the room. But even a cursory listen to the tweaked bits from last week makes clear that the software beloved by musicians from T-Pain to Sean Kingston was used to clean up shaky vocals from a number of contestants. “X Factor” sources have admitted that AutoTune has been employed in the past as well, but denied that it had been used to make some singers sound better and others worse for entertainment purposes. Though “Idol” producers made the pre-emptivestrike against AutoTune , they still did not pull back the curtain on the most pressing “Idol” issue: who are the show’s new judges? With the fresh faces expected to take their seats after Labor Day, “Idol” watchers are eager to get confirmation on reports that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez have joined the panel.
