‘American Idol’ Fans Offer Their Theories On Lee DeWyze’s Win

One viewer says Crystal Bowersox doesn’t have ‘the Hollywood image that they want to sell albums.’ By MTV News staff Photo: MTV News On Wednesday night, Lee DeWyze was named the new American Idol , making front-runner Crystal Bowersox this year’s Adam Lambert . When MTV News took to the streets of New York to get “Idol” fans’ reactions to the results , it seemed like many of them were left wondering why Bowersox didn’t go home the champion. “I was rooting for Crystal, because she was more unique and I like her voice better,” Megan said about the outcome, but, she added, “I wasn’t surprised [she lost]. They both had a really good shot.” Like Megan, Grant loved Bowersox but had an inkling that she wouldn’t go home the winner. “I was rooting for Crystal basically from the beginning, but I guess I knew she wouldn’t win, just because there’s so many factors involved with voting and why people vote for who, and singing is usually the least of one of those factors,” he said. “It was obvious Lee was going to win, even though Crystal could sing circles around him.” Jodie had a more skeptical point of view: “I think it was a setup. I think that whenever Simon picked the song [‘Hallelujah’] for Lee DeWyze … he had backup singers. I mean, I think it was just a setup for him to win.” Mary figured that Crystal came up short thanks to her alternative look. “I personally think she didn’t win because probably the way she looks. If you think of all the people who have won in the past, they all have this certain image that people want to see,” she said. “She has dreads. She’s totally not the Hollywood image that they want to have to sell albums.” There are, of course, the DeWyze fans like Kennedy who said, “I liked his voice. I liked how it was a little bit raspy.” Kelly added: “I actually thought that they were both fantastic. I thought Lee would win, just because he has more star quality, charisma. She’s amazing too. I was a little bit surprised, because all along, I really didn’t think he was in the top. He was more of an underdog win. He stepped up at the end.” Did you vote for Lee or Crystal? ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze’s Friends: ‘This Is Only The Beginning’

Many tears were shed on Wednesday night when the results were read. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Getty Images It was only fitting that Brian Friedopfer and a big group of Lee DeWyze’s friends gathered at the Glenview, Illinois, karaoke bar Potato Creek Johnny’s on Wednesday night to watch the finale of “American Idol.” After all, it was the place Lee and his pals went on an almost-weekly basis to try out their favorite rock tunes. But as his friend stood on the edge of victory after years of slogging his gear around the Chicago area playing gigs in pursuit of his rock and roll fantasy, Friedopfer said the two-hour finale felt like an eternity. “Man, it felt like eight hours,” he said on Thursday morning (May 27). “Once it got to where they were standing onstage and Ryan was about to read the result, me and his close friends were holding onto each other, and we were on our toes, our hearts going a million miles a minute.” As Ryan Seacrest took his usual heart-stopping pause before reading the name aloud, Friedopfer said he was confident Lee’s name was written on the host’s card. But once the words actually came out, it finally felt real — and it was time to celebrate. “We were jumping up and down, tears running down our faces and everyone in the bar gave us a hug,” he said. Hours later, around 4 a.m., Lee finally called Brian and told him, “Brian, I just won ‘American Idol.’ ” “I was like, ‘I know you just won, I watched you!’ ” Friedopfer recalled. “And then, he just said, ‘I love you guys so much and am so grateful for everything you’ve done.’ He said he had to wake up in two hours to do some more interviews, but he just wanted to tell us he loved us and was grateful. That’s how he is, he’s an amazing guy.” Another karaoke pal, Kristin Schlueter, 27, was there as well, and she said that when DeWyze’s name was read, it felt like everyone blacked out for a few seconds, as the news sank in. “It was just a lot of emotion,” said Schlueter, who met Lee at Johnny’s two years ago. “We just started sobbing, and it was so loud in there we couldn’t even hear him performing the final song because we were so hysterical.” Both friends said they were a bit nervous when at the top of Wednesday night’s show, Seacrest said that going into the final night of the competition, the finalists were separated by a mere two percent. But Schlueter brushed it off, saying, “Ah, Lee never loses anything. He would fight to the death if he has to.” For now, she’s just waiting for a phone call from her former karaoke partner. “I’m just waiting for him to say, ‘Guess what I did?’ and I can say, ‘I know, I watched you buddy!’ It’s so weird to see him on TV and think, ‘He used to sit in the passenger seat of my car.’ I just can’t wait to give him a big hug and tell him how proud I am.” Another confidant who had no doubt Lee would emerge victorious was Amy Silverman, Lee’s former high school teacher and close friend, who was in the audience on Tuesday and Wednesday night to cheer him on. “I wasn’t nervous at all,” she said on Thursday. “I never had a doubt. I was talking to Lee the night before, and he felt the same way he felt probably every Tuesday this whole time, but times 1,000: ‘There’s nothing you can do. You can’t worry about anything other than getting some sleep and being there again on Wednesday.’ ” She said he was excited about his chance to perform with Joe Cocker and Chicago, and before the results were read, he looked over at Silverman and another of his close friends and gave them a wave. When Seacrest finally dropped the news, Silverman said she had her eyes closed and she just lost it, weeping tears of joy. “We caught up with him afterwards, and he hugged me and held me and just said, ‘Oh, my God.’ He was speechless, just couldn’t talk. We met up with him and his family at the afterparty later, and he just kept shaking his head and saying, ‘Oh, my God … this is so cool!’ I don’t think it’ll set in for a bit.” Once the shock had worn off, Friedopfer said he recalled sitting in a bar a little less than a year ago and telling DeWyze he was going to win the competition. “I’ve been confident the whole time,” he said. “Now we’re here and he’s won. I knew it had to be him. It’s the only thing that made sense. This is only the beginning.” Were you expecting Lee to win “Idol”? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Finale Ratings The Lowest Since Season One

Just over 24 million people tuned in to see Lee DeWyze crowned the season-nine winner. By Ryan J. Downey Lee DeWyze performs as the new American Idol Photo: Kristian Dowling/FOX/PictureGroup/AP The last time an “American Idol” finale had this few viewers, Justin and Kelly were contestants. Just over 24 million people tuned in to watch last night’s conclusion of season nine, the smallest audience for an “American Idol” season finale since season one in 2002, according to a ratings report in Variety. The first season of Fox’s “American Idol” concluded with Kelly Clarkson winning the title over runner-up Justin Guarini. Since then, the show has created a small army of stars, not the least of which is judge Simon Cowell, who will not return for the show’s 10th season. While the season-nine finale bested the competition from other networks, its overall performance (which included the worst demographic scores in the show’s history, Variety reported) is the latest blow to the pop-culture juggernaut after a season filled with critical groaning over everything from song selections to host Ryan Seacrest’s behavior . It was the first season to feature Ellen DeGeneres as a judge, the first without Paula Abdul and the second with Kara DioGuardi. Lee DeWyze took the crown Wednesday night, though his victory was largely overshadowed by Cowell’s farewell. Also taking center stage was a string of high-profile performances, including ones from Janet Jackson , who sang new ballad “Nothing” and got her groove on for “Nasty”; Christina Aguilera , who transitioned from “Fighter” to Bionic single “You Lost Me”; and Bret Michaels , who told MTV News backstage that he hadn’t cleared his “Idol” duet with third-place finisher Casey James on “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with his doctors. Lee DeWyze After ‘American Idol’ Win: ‘I Don’t Know Where I Am’

‘It felt like there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,’ he says of being named season-nine winner. By Kelley L. Carter Lee DeWyze Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Forgive Lee DeWyze for not being able to articulate what it was like to be named the winner of “American Idol” season nine . “Honestly,” he said backstage after the finale, “I can’t even explain it to you. There was confetti flying, there was fireworks. I don’t know where I am. I’m turning around. It just all happened so fast. It was amazing. It felt like there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. It feels really good. This is an amazing experience for me, especially since this has been a long process, and it’s a lot harder than I ever thought it would be.” Now that the show is over, DeWyze said he gets to go out on tour, get in a studio and do what he loves best. When he finally does get to work on his album, he said it will be a mix of sounds: alternative, rock and folk. He also addressed his final performances on Tuesday night, saying that even though he got critiqued harshly by the judges, he wouldn’t change much. “You’d think by the last week, you get it. They’re going to say what they’re going to say,” he said of the judges. “But as long as you go out there, you try your hardest … you can’t really walk away with regret. There’s been ups and downs. But that’s what makes this show so great. You have to be vulnerable. Sometimes it’s really awesome; sometimes it’s not. I’m happy with what I did, for sure. I think anybody can go back and nitpick, but I love the songs I sang. I went out there and sang them, and I’m happy I did.” As for departing judge Simon Cowell , DeWyze said, “I think that he’s honest and he says what he thinks, and I appreciate that about him.” DeWyze says this competition has changed him for good: “I’m going to hate Wednesdays for the rest of my life. I’m going to wake up on Wednesday and be like, ‘Ugh, it’s judgment day!’ ” Were you surprised that Lee came out on top? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’: The Summer Jam Of 2010?

Its sun-drenched beat and ode to Daisy Dukes make it a perfect summertime smash. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: Capitol Records Few songs are as specific in their intent as Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” a precision-guided smart bomb of a single deployed by the tacticians at Capitol Records with one goal in mind: to positively decimate the summertime airwaves. Yes, with its Coppertoned vocals, slinky, sun-drenched beat and odes to Daisy Dukes, bikini tops and Jeep freaking, “Gurls” is the dictionary definition of a summer smash, the kind of song you’re destined to hear blasting out of boom boxes and mega-clubs from Asbury Park to Zuma Beach. It’s no wonder that, when Perry debuted the single earlier this month, she did so by announcing, “Summer starts now!” The message, it seemed, was clear: Get ready for your favorite suntanning song of 2010. But can Perry succeed in scoring the summer’s biggest hit ? We wouldn’t bet against her. “Gurls” was crafted by the best in the business (the hitmaking team of Max Martin and Dr. Luke, with an assist from Benny Blanco), features a cameo by none other than Snoop Dogg and, through some magical bit of studio engineering, seems to come scented with coconut extract. In fact, it wouldn’t be that huge of a stretch to call it “Hawaiian Tropic Gurls,” though that would eliminate one rather huge part of the song’s surefire success: the shout-out to the Golden State. As Perry recently told Rolling Stone, “Gurls” is her answer to Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” the tune that big-upped the Big Apple and became Jigga’s biggest mainstream hit to date. Turns out geography is a big deal to some folks (who knew?!?), and tunes that pay homage to a particular region’s most, uh, precious resources tend to resonate strongest. On her song, Perry coos about the “fine, fresh and fierce” Cali ladies with “sun-kissed skin” that generates enough heat to melt even the sturdiest of popsicles, and it’s likely that the more than 33 million people who call the state home will agree with her assessment — and download the song too. It would appear Perry’s ploy is already working. Rush-released to radio, “California Gurls” bowed at #2 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 singles chart (her highest-ever debut) and sold more than 294,000 digital downloads in its first week of release, the second-biggest number for a female singer. Oh, and this is all before the high-gloss video — featuring Perry in a candy-colored menagerie of barely there beachwear — has even debuted. All in all, it’s looking like this really could be Perry’s summer. Precision-guided or not, the success of “California Gurls” is undeniable, and the same can be said for its appeal. There’s a science to these sorts of things, after all. Vote for the summer jam of 2010 in the MTV Newsroom now, and stay tuned all week for more on the hottest songs of the season. ‘American Idol’ Coin Toss Shows Crystal And Lee’s Bond, Friend Says

‘It really seemed like they weren’t worried about the order,’ Bowersox’s pal says of coin toss to determine finale performance order. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images You hear it every year: The top-two finalists on “American Idol” are really close pals and neither cares who wins the competition. They said it last year with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert , who roomed together and genuinely seemed to be pulling for and supporting each other, and it appears to be the case again this year with Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox. Except for the full-body hug Bowersox laid on an unsuspecting DeWyze on Wednesday when she realized she’d be competing with him in the finale, it’s been a bit hard to tell what kind of relationship the pair have. A friend of Bowersox’s who attended the show last week got a chance to see host Ryan Seacrest flip a coin following Wednesday night’s results show and said the off-camera scene offered a glimpse into how close these two singers have become since they met at last summer’s Chicago auditions. According to USA Today, Seacrest flipped a coin that had Crystal’s face on one side and Lee’s on the other to determine the performance order for Tuesday night’s (May 25) final sing-off. Crystal won the toss, and her friend said what happened next spoke volumes about their relationship. “Like she said on the show, it doesn’t really matter who wins at this point,” her friend told MTV News. “They auditioned together in Chicago, and they’ve been friends ever since. They genuinely like each other, and when she won the coin toss, she said, ‘I don’t care — what do you think?’ And he said the same thing, and it really seemed like they weren’t worried about the order.” For the record, Bowersox agreed to let Lee go first — which “Idol” watchers said was a smart move.
