Katharine McPhee Talks Reality Shows And Catfights On ‘When I Was 17’

‘American Idol’ wasn’t Kat’s first reality competition, she reveals on Saturday’s episode. By MTV News staff Katharine McPhee Photo: MTV News The world got to know Katharine McPhee in 2006 as a sweet-voiced breakout star on “American Idol” who ended up coming in second place. But as the now-26-year-old singer reveals on the upcoming episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, she popped up on another reality-TV competition back in her teenage years. “When I was 17, I went on this show called ‘Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star,’ ” she said. “It was this competition, and, oh gosh, it was awful. And I didn’t even win! I never win those competitions. It sucks!” It also seems like McPhee didn’t always like competition with her friends either. As a high school senior, she was elected student body vice president, and ended up brawling with her best friend, who just so happened to be the school’s prez. The dispute came about over a disagreement on the school’s budget — specifically, whether their homecoming ceremony should be capped off by a massive fireworks display. “She’s like, ‘I think we should skip the fireworks this year,’ ” McPhee said of her friend. “And I was like, ‘Skip the fireworks? That’s the best part of the entire homecoming. Everyone looks forward to it.’ She’s like, ‘It’s a waste of money. We’re not doing it.’ I’m like, ‘Excuse me, this is a dictatorship? I see how this is.’ “We got into this really big fight and — I was so angry — I got up and she was standing by the door and I just rushed out the door and I brushed by her shoulder,” McPhee continued. “She thought I intentionally rammed into her shoulder. We’re in a catfight, and I was screaming hysterically, ‘Stay away from me! Stay away from me!’ because I was so angry, I was so upset.” Don’t miss “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kat McPhee, Bret Michaels and Kevin Jonas — Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Krista White: America’s Next Top Model Winner

If self-serving blow hard Tyra Banks had her way, she’d name herself America’s Next Top Model every year. Fortunately, that’s against this show’s rules, which meant good things for Krista White last night. The 26-year-old from Pine Bluff, Arkansas beat out Raina Hein in the finals and was reduced to tears when her name was announced as the winner. “I can’t believe it. I want to pinch myself,” said White. “Nobody thought it would be me. For me, to be from the small Pine Bluff with maybe 100 or something people where nobody ever leaves. It’s amazing … I’m excited I’m America’s Next Top Model.” Of course, someone has to tell Angela that the competition is over – and she lost. “I know America loves me,” the self-promoting finalist said after being eliminated. “Even though I’m not in the final two, I’m still America’s Next Top Model.” Except that you aren’t. Banks referred to White as “the embodiment of a top model.” As the winner, she receives a contract with Wilhelmina Models; a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics; and a six-page spread in Seventeen . Were you happy Krista won?

‘Harry Potter’ Star Tom Felton Calls Movie Awards Nod ‘A Massive Honor’

‘I’d love to see some awards being handed out to ‘Harry Potter’ stars,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Tom Felton Photo: Steven Lawton/ FilmMagic Last summer, at the New York premiere for “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,” Tom Felton — the Brit actor behind platinum-blond baddie Draco Malfoy — walked us through the key characteristics of a great onscreen villain . “Cold eyes, I’ve been told. A pretty pasty face,” he said. “I think to be evil you need an iconic look. Like a James Bond villain, with the scar or a cat.” The guy certainly knows what he’s talking about. On Wednesday morning (May 12), Felton was nominated for Best Villain at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Back in South London while finishing up the shoot for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” Felton gave MTV News a call to talk about his nomination and take stock of the competition. “It’s a massive honor,” he said. “Especially given that it’s a fan vote. That makes it quite touching. And it’s classic for me, because for almost a decade, kids have been running onto set and hugging Daniel [Radcliffe] and shaking Emma [Watson]’s hand. I try and be as polite as I can, and I never seem to get anywhere with them. Finally, I’m in a category that celebrates that fact!” Come the June 6 awards show, Felton will face off in the Best Villain category against Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”), Helena Bonham Carter (“Alice in Wonderland”), Ken Jeong (“The Hangover”) and Stephen Lang (“Avatar”). Obviously, the key question is: Which of these nefarious characters would win in a fight? Lang’s scar-faced, alien-slaying boss in “Avatar” might prove to be a bit of a challenge for the supernatural-assisted Draco, but Felton isn’t too worried. “If he had one of those big suits on he had on at the end, I’m not sure I’d stand a chance,” he said, before deciding, “But I have got the wand always, and the broomstick is pretty nimble.” The wand is exactly what Draco would need against Waltz’s cold-blooded, Jew-hunting Nazi — a performance Felton dubbed “the most spine-chilling of the year.” “He may talk a good talk, but against a decent spell or two, I might be able to take him,” Felton laughed. And then there’s Helena Bonham Carter, his “Harry Potter” co-star and now his MTV Movie Awards adversary. “Never my competition — she’s my idol,” Felton said. “I’ve learned more off her than anyone else.” Sure you don’t want to talk a little smack? “Of course! I’m putting a friendly face on it, but on the night, it’s all game,” Felton said. “Each dog for his own.” Lastly, there is Jeong’s naked, tire-iron-swinging mob boss. Can a wizard take him down? And would Draco ever strip it all off to prove he’s the best villain on the big screen? Turns out, that almost happened during “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “In the fourth film, I got turned into a ferret,” he said. “In the original script, it says that in the transition back from ferret to human, I was going to be naked, and I was going to have to run through the courtyard with about 60 extras and 50 film crew and run out with my cheeks on show. For some reason, they pulled that at the last minute. I don’t know why. Maybe they thought it was too explicit for young viewers. Maybe something about not having a wide-angle lens!” Well played, sir. Any final words — a get-out-the-vote message for fans? “After 10 years, to still be in the public’s hearts, it really means a lot,” he said. “I can speak for Daniel and Emma and the rest of the cast on that one. I’d love to see some awards being handed out to ‘Harry Potter’ stars on the night.” Don’t miss the MTV Movie Awards , airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV! The veteran Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has been ruled out of the World Twenty20 Competition in the West Indies after straining an arm muscle during a warm-up match. Lee will be sent home after the injury he got in Australia’s shock defeat to Zimbabwe. Team officials have asked permission to call up for a replacement. Why Lee Dewyze Will Win ‘American Idol’

Crystal Bowersox might be the front-runner, but so was Adam Lambert, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lee Dewyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox I hate to break it to you, fellow members of Bowersox Nation, but our girl isn’t going to win “American Idol.” It pains me to write that, as I love Crystal and all that she stands for (shoot, I feel like I know her ), and I really want her to win, but it’s just not in the cards. Not with Lee Dewyze still shrugging in the background, anyway. See, no matter how much Simon Cowell wants to shout it, “American Idol” is not “a singing competition”; it’s a popularity contest. If the show were based on vocal ability, producers would have just ended the competition last week, after Bowersox leveled the room with her tearful take on “People Get Ready,” or last month, when she lapped the field with “Me And Bobby McGee,” or, well, you catch my drift. At this point, the questions about her “marketability” or “relevancy” are moot: Her voice is timeless. She has proven that she can sing anything, anytime, anywhere, and she can do it better than anyone else on the show. So of course, she will still end up losing. Because “Idol” isn’t based on talent (I mean, it is up to a certain point — usually about the time we reach the top 10, then things tend to get all high-schooly). It’s based on intangible stuff like “familiarity” and “likability.” And those are the two categories in which Bowersox doesn’t dominate. For better or worse, viewers tend to vote for the contestant they feel they have the most in common with, the one they feel is a nice person, the one they already feel like they hear four times an hour on the radio. And more often than not, that contestant happens to be a slightly scruffy, well-proportioned, slightly hunky, kinda underdoggy, totally inoffensive guy. And this year, that guy is Lee Dewyze. Let me stop here for a second and say that I don’t dislike Dewyze in any way. I actually don’t have any kind of opinion of him (and I don’t think I’m in the minority by saying that), which doesn’t exactly bode well for his post-“Idol” career. After thinking about it for a full five minutes, here’s about all I can come up with to say about him: He seems like a pretty nice guy. He has good teeth. He is probably nice to animals and children and the elderly. Sometimes he wears a goofy knit cap. He plays the kind of bland, radio-ready sorta-rock that continues to mystify me. Of course, none of this makes him interesting — and, frankly, when he speaks, I tend to lose consciousness — but it makes him a shoo-in to win season nine of “American Idol.” “Idol” voters don’t want “interesting”; they want “nice,” “dependable,” “relatable.” This doesn’t change — or, at least, it hasn’t for the past three seasons. Just look at last year, when everyone was rushing to crown Adam Lambert the champion. I argued that Kris Allen would win “Idol” because “he seems like a solid, trustworthy guy — like a combination cowboy/firefighter, or a youth minister (which I think he actually is). If you think about it for a few seconds, you’ll probably realize that you know someone exactly like him — and you are not alone. Everyone in America knows someone like Kris Allen. Or, at least, more people know someone like him than they do Adam Lambert.” As it turns out, I was right. So with something like four weeks left in the competition, I’m calling it for Lee Dewyze. He reminds me too much of Allen in every possible way, right down to the fact that most of the media that covers “Idol” seems hell-bent on making him the “underdog,” despite all evidence to the contrary. Plus, to be honest, it’s not like Crystal has really salted this one away, either, what with the whole “I-quit, no-wait-I-don’t” drama surrounding her last week. There are too many holes in her story. She is considered too weird by the people who actually vote on this thing, and eventually — probably in the finale — her luck will run out. I am not alone in thinking this, either. Just Tuesday, I spoke to a pair of “Idol” experts for a piece I was working on called “Can Crystal Bowersox Lose ‘American Idol’?” Sadly, they both agreed that, yes, she could, and it would probably be to Dewyze. Of course, I’m willing to be proven wrong — I just don’t think I will be. America will go for Lee Dewyze, because they’ve gone for him in season seven (David Cook) and eight (Allen). They will go for him because he’s the safe, familiar choice, and because he seems nice. But most of all, they will go for him because he’s not Crystal Bowersox. That’s a shame, but it’s not exactly shocking. America likes things safe, and this is ” American Idol,” after all. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .
