Grammy Hits And Misses: Ke$ha Shut Out, Bruno Mars Cleans Up

Big Boi and Alicia Keys are also left out, but Florence and the Machine and Ray LaMontagne get some much-deserved love. By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: Kristian Dowling / PictureGroup What would the annual Grammy nominations announcement be without the next-day quarterbacking and bellyaching about who got dissed and who got just the right amount of Academy love? While this year’s batch of contenders is mostly devoid of the WTF factor of past nomination seasons, when veteran acts such as Steely Dan, Robert Plant and Herbie Hancock sucked most of the air out of the room, there were still plenty of surprises, omissions and flat-out questionable choices to go around. The one most people were buzzing about Thursday (December 2) was the blank delivered to Ke$ha, who earned a grand total of zero nominations for her debut, Animal, despite launching several hits and earning a major spot in the pop-culture universe in 2010. The snub was even more noticeable because one of her producers, Dr. Luke, was nominated in the producer category and four of the eight songs that earned him that spot were from Ke$ha’s debut. We spoke to Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt about that oversight and many others in this year’s nominations. She said the Ke$ha situation was surprising, especially considering the love that the similarly poptastic Katy Perry got for Teenage Dream, which has sold well but, like Animal, was not critically adored upon release. “But I think it’s really cool to see Florence [and the Machine] get that nomination [for Best New Artist], and I think it’s awesome that Esperanza Spalding also got nominated [in that category],” she said of the little-known jazz singer who likely sent many people to Google on Wednesday night. Greenblatt was also excited that raspy-voiced singer Ray LaMontagne snagged a spot in the Song of the Year category for “Beg Steal or Borrow” and another in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. “As fogie-ish as the Grammys are, it seems like this year they went more towards a Teen Choice Awards direction with a noticeably younger group of nominees,” she said, wondering if it was a conscious decision to try and make the show hipper or if it’s a signal of the changing demographic of Grammy voters. “And I think Bruno Mars deserves all of his nominations,” she added about the singer/songwriter/producer who scored seven nods . “He only had one hit, but he really shaped popular music this year with the songs he did for Travie McCoy, B.o.B and Cee Lo. He brought so much musicality to R&B and pop. He’s making music and playing instruments and he’s insanely melodic. He’s not just jacking samples.” As for how Eminem ended up with the most nominations at 10 , she chalked it up to the “Sandra Bullock factor,” speculating that Grammy voters might have just thought it was Marshall Mathers’ time to shine again. “He’s not universally liked for his sparkling personality, but it seems like it’s his time,” she said of the rapper, who had the year’s best-selling album with Recovery and stormed back with some of the most melodic, accessible music of his decade-plus career. “It almost seemed like he was deemed safe enough for the Grammys this year … and the album is so incredibly commercial. It’s as safe as Eminem gets.” As for who got left off, Greenblatt said she was surprised at the lack of “American Idol” names on the list, with season-eight winner Kris Allen getting shut out and that season’s runner-up, Adam Lambert, only getting a bid for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Whataya Want From Me.” And for a song that was one of the best-selling singles of the year, it was surprising that Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister,” Grammy bait if there ever was, managed only one nod for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals — for a live version of the tune. There were other glaring omissions to be sure: no love for rappers Rick Ross and Big Boi, just a pair of nominations for last year’s big winners Kings of Leon, a shutout for Lady Gaga’s smash “Bad Romance” in the Record and Song of the Year categories (it did show up in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) as well as for B.o.B and Hayley Williams’ mega-hit “Airplanes,” which scored only a Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals acknowledgment. Greenblatt was also disappointed that Alicia Keys’ The Element of Freedom got blanked, despite the handfuls of Grammys the singer has taken home in the past. And considering its major impact on the pop-culture landscape, “Glee” only got noticed in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which Greenblatt said may have had something to do with the fact that the songs on the show are covers and not original compositions. In the end, though, she said this year’s Grammys were mostly devoid of the giant head-smacking omissions and inclusions of past years and with the strong recognition to a new generation of singers, another potential sign that the show might be inching in a new direction. Hayley Williams Says She’d ‘Love To See B.o.B Win’ At The Grammys

The Paramore frontwoman picked up a pair of Grammy noms, but she’s rooting for her ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by James Lacsina Hayley Williams Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images On Wednesday night, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams picked up a pair of Grammy nominations — a Best Pop Collaboration nod for her work with B.o.B and Eminem on “Airplanes, Part II,” and a Best Pop Performance mention for her band’s song “The Only Exception.” So, when she spoke to MTV News literally minutes after learning about her noms, the singer was understandably excited. “Oh man, it feels so good!” Williams laughed. “And I’m really proud of everything that I get to be a part of, and I love being here to represent the guys. I wish they were here.” And while her two nominations are certainly nothing to sneeze at, they sort of pale in comparison to the 10 racked up by Eminem … or the five that B.o.B got. And since Williams guested on a song with both of those artists, we had to ask her who she’ll be cheering for come Grammy night. “Well, I would love to see B.o.B win everything he got nominated for … not only is he an amazing artist and performer, but he’s such a great dude,” she said. “And we’ve been lucky to tour together and I’ve just watched him explode. He’s a massive star now, and he’s still the same guy. So I love seeing my friends win, and I’m always going to be there rooting for him.” Of course, Williams may have an ulterior motive for throwing her support behind B.o.B — after all, he did promise MTV News that if he takes home an award, he will record a song with Paramore . “Oh yeah, well I think we just entered into a verbal contract about it right here,” Williams said, smiling. “We’ll definitely do it … I love music, I love working with other artists, as long as I feel it’s true to me as well. I wouldn’t have done ‘Airplanes’ if I listened to it and thought, ‘Uh, I don’t really care.’ But I heard it and I heard something really special, and I related to it.” And just what would a Paramore/B.o.B collabo sound like? “You’d be surprised,” Williams said. “Have you heard his new mixtape yet? Just listen to that and then tell me what you think it’s gonna sound like. It’s gonna be so sick.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, February 13, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. B.o.B Promises Paramore Collabo If He Wins A Grammy

‘If I win … I will make a song with Paramore,’ the rapper tells MTV News after learning of his five nominations. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Lascina B.o.B Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images B.o.B certainly had that “magic” this year. The rapper got five Grammy nominations for his various efforts with everyone from Bruno Mars to Eminem to Paramore’s Hayley Williams. So, how does it feel to get all those nods? “I feel like being nominated for a Grammy is something that’s more about the music to me than anything else,” he told MTV News after all the potential winners were announced. “It’s great. It’s just like a party. It’s like being in the locker room after a football game that you won.” B.o.B’s nominations include Record of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song for his Bruno Mars collabo “Nothin’ on You,” as well as Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for “Airplanes II” with Eminem and Williams and Best Rap Album for The Adventures of Bobby Ray . Regarding his nods for “Nothin’ on You,” B.o.B said, “Bruno’s the truth, man. I’m glad we’re both nominated. It’s awesome.” Now, B.o.B admits that he doesn’t care which Grammy he takes home … as long as he wins one. “Hey, I’m nominated for a Grammy, so whatever category to go home with a Grammy is an accomplishment in itself,” he maintained. “It can be a ‘Most F-sharps Played on an Album’ Grammy nomination. As for who might take home the most awards at the event, he said, “I think that I don’t know, honestly. You never know with these things. They’re quite the elusive type of prediction to make. I can’t really say … hopefully me,” he laughed. And, if he does manage to snag one of the coveted trophies, he has a big promise to fulfill. “If I win, I’ll make another song with Hayley Williams,” he said. “No, if I win I’ll make a song with Paramore, if I win … if I win a Grammy, I will make a song with Paramore.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards air February 13 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Grammy Nominations Concert: Katy Perry And Justin Bieber Perform, Earn Nods

B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Train also hit the stage for the nominations special. By James Montgomery Katy Perry performs during the GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Even though the Grammy Awards are still more than two months away, Eminem should probably start getting his acceptance speech ready. Or, more specifically, acceptance speeches. Em landed three huge nominations during Wednesday night’s (December 1) Grammy Nominations Concert at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — Record and Song of the Year for his massive hit “Love the Way You Lie” and an Album of the Year nod for the equally big Recovery — making him the early favorite to take home the hardware February 13, when the Grammys will be handed out. Another early favorite is Cee Lo, whose “F— You” scored noms for both Record and Song of the Year and — of course — country juggernauts Lady Antebellum, who matched Eminem with nominations for Record, Song and Album of the Year. Both Eminem and Lady Antebellum were expected by most to pick up nominations in the so-called “big four” categories, but that doesn’t mean the Grammy nominations special was without its fair share of surprises. Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream picked up a nod for Best Album, along with Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster and, in the night’s most unexpected twist, indie stalwarts the Arcade Fire and their disc The Suburbs. All of those categories figure to be close, but the Grammy for Best New Artist appears to be a race between two Canadian heartthrobs: Justin Bieber and Drake, who are the presumptive favorites in a field that also includes Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding. Bieber — who appeared live via satellite from London — couldn’t contain his excitement (or find the right words, for that matter) after learning he’d been nominated, telling the night’s host, LL Cool J, that “It feels amazing … I can’t believe I’m in this position! I don’t know what to say!” Of course, the nominations were just half of the show. In true Grammy tradition, the telecast also featured a host of high-profile performances. Perry kicked things off with a holiday-themed take on “California Gurls” (meaning she wore some ornaments in her hair) and was followed by Bruno Mars, who strummed his way through “Just the Way You Are,” backed by a trilling string section and a pianist. Train performed their massive “Hey, Soul Sister” — which, rather shockingly, was shut out of the Big Four — Bieber reappeared for an acoustic version of “My Favorite Girl,” and Mars teamed up with B.o.B to put a lilting spin on “Nothin’ on You,” which picked up a nomination for Record of the Year. B.o.B Plans ‘A Little Bit Of Magic’ For Grammy Nominations Concert

‘This year, all the success, all the doors that have been opened have really taken me by surprise,’ he tells MTV News of his own Grammy chances. By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by James Lacsina B.o.B at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday Photo: James Lacsina B.o.B is ready to hit the stage. He’s been performing one of the hottest songs all year long, so it’s only appropriate that he and Bruno Mars perform it one more time at Wednesday night’s (December 1) Grammy Nominations Concert at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. Earlier Wednesday, the rapper performed “Don’t Let Me Fall” on his own and, later, his big hit “Nothin’ on You” with Bruno Mars. “It was a really good way to kick it off and be more involved with the overall experience,” he said of the concert. B.o.B said he doesn’t have too many expectations about how the Grammy nominations might shake out, considering that this is his first year being involved. When asked if he might do something a bit different for his performance during the nominations special, the “Magic” MC joked, “Just a little bit of magic.” Bobby Ray has some predictions for his colleagues when it comes to Grammy night: “I think Cee Lo and Bruno Mars could win because of their musicality and what they brought.” But what about the rapper’s own chances? “If Bruno is nominated, I probably might be nominated also. It’s kind of a win-win situation for both of us,” he said of his collaborator. “This year, all the success, all the doors that have been opened have really taken me by surprise.” The nominations special airs Wednesday night on CBS at 10 ET/PT. The 53rd annual Grammys air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, and will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Rick Ross Named The Source’s Man Of The Year

Wiz Khalifa is named Rookie of the Year in the magazine’s year-end issue. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa on the cover of the “year-end edition of The Source Photo: The Source With arguably the best mixtape and rap album of the year and the biggest street banger of 2010, it was a no-brainer that The Source named Rick Ross its Man of the Year. The Miami MC graces the cover of the magazine’s year-end issue along with upstart Wiz Khalifa , who was named Rookie of the Year. The issue is the first handled by new editor-in-chief, veteran XXL editor Bonsu Thompson. In it, Ross responds to rumors that he walked out of the Soul Train Awards earlier this month (the show was taped on November 10) after Eminem bested him for an award. So is there beef brewing between the two rappers? “Not at all,” Ross told the mag, citing production issues as the reason for his early exit. “I been going to award shows for a long time and I’ve never had a problem with who won. I’m happy I’m recognized. We were in the trailer, going over these particular [performance] issues [with the show’s producers]. Out of respect, we came back out there to give them a reaction to the nomination. They gave the award to Eminem. I applauded. Big record. That wasn’t the issue. Like I said, the things we requested weren’t met.” While Wiz had stiff competition up against Ross, Em, Jay-Z, Drake and Kanye for Man of the Year honors, the upstart easily took the rookie crown with his Taylor Gang fanatics helping him to sell out shows across the country. The Pittsburgh rapper is riding the success of his first breakout hit, “Black and Yellow,” but prior to climbing the charts, he still had a base that could make veteran artists envious. Some say it’s his breezy green appeal, though Wiz — who was busted on drug charges earlier this month — said it goes beyond that. “It’s not just the weed. The music is awesome,” he explained. “The music is great. Just from the beats that I pick, I’m a fan of my producers. They push me. The vibe is so positive, you can be who you want to be. The weed just goes with it. See, when I was in high school, I wasn’t in the streets. I had friends that were in the streets, but I just smoked with them. I had straight white kids that I just kicked it with and they smoked more than the kids in the streets. So I kicked it with everybody, but we were all on the same sh– mentally.” The year-end issue of The Source hits newsstands December 21. My Chemical Romance Fans Get Batty, Battered At L.A. Gig

‘I got kicked [and] hit on the head, but it never felt so good,’ gushed one fan at MCR’s Danger Days release party. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way performs in Los Angeles on Monday Photo: MTV.com HOLLYWOOD — My Chemical Romance threw a party on Monday night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip to celebrate the release of their brand new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys , and the members of the MCRmy showed up in their Killjoy finest. Both inside and out, the House of Blues was transformed into a Day-Glo diaspora, part postapocalyptic fashion spectacle, part bizarre performance-art piece, as My Chem fans donned neon masks, brightly colored bandanas and a variety of blinking accessories (glasses, necklaces, bracelets, etc.), all in the name of Danger Days. They strolled through the “Zone 5 Carnival,” scarfed down cotton candy, avoided the menacing Draculoids that patrolled the grounds and — perhaps most importantly — witnessed one heck of a concert. “It was amazing. They’re my favorite band, so I was just completely stoked the whole time,” 17-year-old MCR fan Ryan Johnson said. “There was a lot of moshing going, and it was kind of crazy. The energy was amazing.” And that energy was matched only by some MCR followers’ dedication … they came from miles around (and a half a world away) to be here on this night, to be with their fellow fanatics and say they were there on the night their favorite band released its most ambitious album to date. “It was one of the most amazing concerts of my life … the utter energy that MCR puts out to the fans and the love all of us have for them, we all come together and it’s like one big family having an amazing get-together,” 15-year-old Matt Jennette said. “I came all the way here from Chicago because this is the album-release party and I love them with an unholy dedication. I had to see ’em. I paid like $200 for the tickets and it was worth it without a shadow of a doubt.” “I came from Italy, just because I love them more than my life. Their music makes me feel happy,” Stefania Fiorese, 24, added. “We were in the first row and it was amazing. I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Paris, and it was so good, but this one was better. The crowd was pushing so hard — everyone was jumping, everyone was trying to reach them. Tomorrow I will be purple all over my body but I don’t care.” That sentiment was echoed by pretty much every MCR fan who MTV News spoke to on Monday, many of whom limped out of the House of Blues a little battered, but completely, totally, blissed out of their minds. “They never cease to amaze me, they’re always great shows,” John Conaty, 20, beamed. “I got kicked, crowd surfed on, got hit on the head numerous times, but it never felt so good. At every My Chemical Romance show, getting crushed feels the best.” “I got kicked in the face! I didn’t even see it coming!” 16-year-old Savannah Hill laughed. “There was a crowd surfer and then they just came out of nowhere and whammed me in the face, but then I continued to watch the show. It was awesome.” Have you seen My Chemical Romance live? Tell us about your concert experiences in the comments. Related Videos Live In LA: My Chemical Romance Related Artists My Chemical Romance
