‘Dark Knight Rises’ And More: 20 Best Trailers Of 2011

Teasers for ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ also left us hungry for more. By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Time, like the theatrical run of “Your Highness,” has disappeared quickly this year. It’s hard to believe it was almost 12 months ago that we were settling into our seats to check out Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch.” That didn’t work out so well. And so, as the MTV Movies team begins our look back at the cinematic year that was 2011, we’re reminded that time is precious. We don’t have much of it; we must use it wisely. That’s why we’re beginning our series of best-of stories with movie trailers — those neat little packages of footage that let us know in a few minutes’ time whether the full movie is going to be worth it. Picking our 20 favorite trailers was a tough call; just look at the ones that didn’t make it, like “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” In the end, though, we selected the trailers that truly stuck with us — some since the early days of the year and some newer ones that are sure to haunt us into next year. Read on for our picks for the 20 best movie trailers of 2011. 20. “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” The trailer teases everything the movie delivers — a slowly building whodunit of a plot, an ominous score, period details so depressingly ’70s-era British that the footage should come with a voucher for lithium — while at the same time succeeding in one area where the movie falters: It’s not pull-your-hair-out, whisper-to-the-person-next-to-you, throw-your-hands-up-in-defeat confusing. 19. “The Muppets” An unlikely companion piece to the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” teaser listed below, this “Muppets” trailer — one in a long line of pop-culture mash-ups — had the lovable felt creatures laser-beaming one message to viewers: Our movie may be rated PG, but we swear you’ll totally dig it. And hey, if you want to get stoned in the parking lot beforehand, that’s fine, dude. 18. “Battleship” The “Battleship” trailer got a lot of crap when it dropped in July — was this just “Blue Crush” meets “Armageddon,” with neither the former’s sugary, shameless sex factor nor the latter’s Bruce Willis? Instead let us float another way of viewing it: as an utterly wacky, probably nonsensical yet potentially blockbustering summer movie for a “Transformers”-less 2012. 17. “Martha Marcy May Marlene” The footage builds and builds its claustrophobic tension, finally giving way to John Hawkes’ homespun singer/songwriter tuneage, which somehow still doesn’t allow you any catharsis, any chance just to catch your breath: All is not well in Elizabeth Olsen’s world. And it’s simply addicting to watch. 16. “The Woman in Black” The tagline could have been, “Abandon hope, all ye Muggles who enter here.” The first full trailer for Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-“Harry Potter” film was simple and creepy and effective — and unlike anything the boy wizard has ever encountered. 15. “Red Tails” The second trailer starts off a little hokey, but it soon morphs into a shoot-’em-up dogfight between the Tuskegee Airmen and the Axis powers. Every piece of American history should come wrapped in such fiery pop-culture packaging. 14. “Devil’s Double” Torture, guns, chicks in bikinis, Dominic Cooper doing double duty as wide-eyed innocent and psychotic tyrant — what else can one ask for in a trailer? 13. “Super 8” While our favorite “Super 8” trailer dropped in 2010, the one J.J. Abrams unleashed this past March — with its classic movie-monster intrigue and Spielbergian patina — was still pretty kick-ass. If only the film itself had lived up to the potential of these early looks. 12. “Drive” In a word: cool. In a few more: awesome score, awesome car chases, awesome hints at violence, awesome performance by Ryan Gosling. Mainly, though: cool as sh–. 11. “John Carter” After checking out this trailer , we’d gladly jet off to Mars and battle a few of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ baddies if it meant catching an early screening of this sci-fi epic. 10. “American Reunion” We didn’t realize we actually missed Jim and his randy pals until we glimpsed the goofball and his flute-loving wife separately, secretly pleasuring themselves to R. Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind.” 9. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” Nicolas Cage pees fire. He f—ing pees fire and says it feels awesome. When do tickets go on sale? 8. “Like Crazy” One of the best movies at Sundance became the hands-down finest trailer for a romantic drama in 2011, capturing all the beauty and sadness and magic that echoes between Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones in the film. 7. “Rise of the Apes” Anyone mocking the idea of bringing back those damn dirty apes with James Franco in tow was roundly silenced when the teaser dropped in April and we peeped Andy Serkis’ Caesar and his ilk unleashing simian fury on San Francisco. 6. “X-Men First Class” Was it the sizzling score? The historical weight imbued by JFK’s voice-over? The quick looks at all those mutants? Every single frame in which Michael Fassbender was onscreen? It was all of it and more that made this “X-Men” trailer one of the most epic of the year. 5. “The Hunger Games” After the most teaser-y of teaser trailers debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards , Lionsgate came through with a ton of footage in November: districts, tributes, games-makers, the Hunger Games arena and three teens looking to swipe the throne of tween obsession-dom from Edward, Bella and Jacob. 4. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” The feel-bad movie of Christmas gave us zero dialogue, oodles of fresh looks without anything so troublesome as context getting in the way, and Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song.” Oh, and chills: it gave us chills. 3. “Snow White and the Huntsman” Our expectations were not high. So let us apologize to Kristen Stewart and all who are involved with this adaptation: Well done, folks! Sweeping in scale and containing some truly creative visual effects (huge crows splintering into hundreds of smaller crows, an anthropomorphic golden mirror), the trailer already would have been a 2011 highlight on its own merits. But when the silly trailer for “Mirror, Mirror,” a competing Snow White flick, dropped days later, we had to revise our expectations for “Huntsman”: This is how you adapt a centuries-old fairy tale for the 21st-century multiplex. 2. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Sure, we whooped it up to “Woman in Black.” But the final “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” trailer? That sucker was not only the best “Deathly Hallows” trailer, it was arguably the best trailer of the entire franchise. 1. “The Dark Knight Rises” This teaser should be encased in glass and studied at every studio in Hollywood as the perfect way to build excitement, deliver what core fans wants and yet not give away the whole shebang — and leave everyone dying to see more, more, more. There is simply no question: This was the best trailer of 2011, and we have a feeling it’s teasing what will be the best movie of 2012. The 2012 Grammy Nominees Revealed … Possibly

Adele, Kanye West and more Grammy guesses, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Getty Images On Wednesday night (November 30), CBS will officially kick off the self-congratulatory season with “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!,” an emphatically titled extravaganza that not only features performances from some of music’s biggest stars (Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Usher, etc.), but also boosts the network’s burgeoning LL Cool J branch by something like 20 percent, since he’s taking leave from “NCIS” duties to host the telecast. Oh, and as the title implies, they’ll also be unveiling a handful of Grammy nominees too, which means that, once again, it’s time for me to blindly speculate on who will get the nods. After all, it was less than 10 months ago that acts like the Arcade Fire and Esperanza Spalding shocked the world — or at least Steve Stoute — by taking home half of the so-called “Big Four” Grammys, victories that seemed out of place in just about every conceivable way, especially when you realize Taylor Swift, Beyonc

Daniel Radcliffe ‘Thrilled’ For Darren Criss On Broadway

‘Glee’ actor taking over for ‘Harry Potter’ star in ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News After a very successful and critically acclaimed run on the Great White Way, Daniel Radcliffe will very soon be ending his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and passing the torch to “Glee” star Darren Criss , who will take over on January 3. When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe — who we named as the actor we’re most thankful for in 2011 — we asked for his thoughts on his successor and whether he had any decision or veto power in Criss being added to the cast. “Oh God, no. I don’t have any power over those things at all, nor should I,” Radcliffe said. “I think it’s fantastic. I’m actually kind of thrilled. He went to the same high school as a couple of the guys in our show did. I think he’s really talented. I’ve not met him yet, but I’m sure he’s very nice. He’s a very, very talented guy, and I’m sure he’ll do a great job.” Radcliffe is bummed for Criss that he only gets to perform the “Succeed” role for three weeks, due to his busy “Glee” work schedule. “I feel slightly sorry for him in a way,” Radcliffe said. “I needed time with it to get it right, and you don’t have that, because obviously he has to go back to ‘Glee.’ I’m sure if it was up to him, he would have liked to do a longer run.” Although the two stars have yet to meet, they share a mutual admiration for each other. “I’ve seen a few episodes [of ‘Glee’],” Radcliffe admitted. “I haven’t seen [Criss] in it, but I’ve seen three or four episodes probably. I liked it. My girlfriend is really into it.” Related Videos Actors We’re Thankful For 2011

Rick Ross, Common To Perform With The Furious Five On Grammy Nominations Special

Rick Ross, Common, Lupe Fiasco and LL Cool J will perform ‘The Message’ with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five during live Grammy nom special on November 30 on CBS. By Rob Markman Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five Photo: Ebet Roberts/ Redferns Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were onto something when they recorded one of rap’s earliest hits, The Message” in 1982. Not only would hip-hop rock the party for years to come, but the then-budding genre would grow to become the CNN of the streets — detailing the ills of the inner city ghetto. On November 30 Common, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross and LL Cool J will join Furious Five members Melle Mel and Scorpio for a special performance of “The Message” during “The Grammy Nominations Concert,” airing live on CBS. The one-hour show, will reveal the nominations for the 54th annual Grammy Awards which will take place on February 12, 2012 in Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. LL Cool J will host the awards and Lady Gaga, Ludacris, Rihanna, Sugarland and USher have already been announced as performers while Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry will be on deck as award presenters. For the fourth time the nominations will be announced during primetime and “The Grammy Nominations Concert” will not only feature the cross-generational rap performance, but will also boast performances from past Grammy winners and nominees. On November 21 it was announced that “The Message” would be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame , 30 years after it was recorded. On the track rappers Melle Mel and Ed “Duke Bootee” Fletcher rhymed about junkies in the alley, pimps, prostitutes and the rampant unemployment of the 1980s. The groundbreaking lyrics were summed up perfectly on the track’s hook, “It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from goin’ under.” “The Message” has since been a staple not only in hip-hop, sampled by Ice Cube in 1993 on a remix to his “Check Yo Self” single and again on Diddy’s “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” in 1997. The Grammy Nominations Concert Live– Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night will air on November 30 on CBS at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

I’ve had many Bieber experiences but I’m just…

I’ve had many Bieber experiences but I’m just going to talk about three. Meeting him at the Izod Center on November 17th, 2010, at the Today Show & Christmas Special on November 4th, 2011 and exactly a year after the first time meeting him on November 17th, 2011 outside of Z100. I’ve seen him plenty of more times, like at The Seven, 106&Park and etc, but didn’t meet him any of those times. But anyways… the Izod Center. A month before the concert, I spent so much of my time taking screenshots and sending in emails to  bieberfever.com . The night before the concert I got the email saying congratulations and that I was going to meet Justin the next day. I got up early, did my hair and what not, and left for the Izod Center early to try to have luck outside meeting anyone from the team. But I didn’t haha. After waiting outside for a few hours, it was finally time to get on the meet and greet line. Finally it was our time to go in and I walked in first, unless I would have been really shy. I was like, “Heyyy” and Justin was like, “Hey how are you?” And I was like, “Goood, how are you?” He said “Good” and he put his arm out for me to go next to him. He looked amazing and I was shaking so bad. After we took the picture, I just looked at him and was like “Can I get a hug?” And he grabbed me and said “Of course” and gave me like the BEST hug ever. I said “Nice to meet you” and he said “Nice meeting you too” and that was it. The concert afterwards was soo amazing. The next time meeting him was on November 4th, 2011 at the Today Show . I got into the city about 11:30 the night before. When they let us in the barricades at about 6:30, we went right in front of the doors where he came out. He was so nice going around meeting all the fans. When he first came out, he started about two people after me and I thought I was screwed. But he came back and asked where he started, and that’s when I like told Alfredo he started over by me and Justin came over to us. He wasn’t really taking any pictures so I just asked him to sign my poster. After that, I had won tickets to see him at the Michael Buble Christmas Special , and so I took my friend Brie with me. We got ready in the bathroom at the mall in Columbus Circle for like an hour! And then we had such a hard time getting into Brooklyn for the special. The trains were all running weird due to track work. And the first taxi cab driver we got didn’t know anything so we got out and I didn’t even know where in the city I was so I was like panicking, especially since Brie’s iphone died that had the directions and my blackberry wasn’t really much help. We saw a Starbucks and ran in. We were like 10 minutes from the place. We were worrying that we were going to be late and they weren’t going to let us in. We then decided her phone was charged enough so we got another cab and the driver was amazing! He told us that he’d get us there for Biebs! Haha! We told him everything we’ve been through and I wish all NYC taxi drivers were as nice as this guy! Long story short, we got there and got our wristbands! Our seats were a bit back, but still really close since it was a small place. We were sitting on the edge where everyone walked in and out. Justin didn’t come out that way, they had him in the back corner while everyone went back into the room where they were filming, we had to go out while he soundchecked. Anyways, Alfredo & Kenny were standing like right in front of us. Kenny remembered us from outside the hotel the last time they were in NYC and getting us pizza . He said hi and like kept looking back. And then Alfredo is just the best. We saw him tweeting and so I was like, “Yo fredo, I see you tweeting over there” and he looked back laughing. Justin’s performance was amazing. We each got a picture with Alfredo afterwards outside the place . My mom picked me up, and we were behind Justin and them for the longest time, they must have thought I was following them and being a creep, but I really was just going home the same way they were going. Finally, I skipped school on November 17th, 2011 and met Justin outside out Z100! Before going inside, he took the time out to meet all of us outside since there weren’t so many people and we were really calm. When he got to me, I was shaking and took our picture. I was like, “Uh, can I hug you?” He was like yeah and hugged me. I saw that my picture was blurry since I was shaking so bad, and so after he was done taking pictures with my friends, I asked if I could get another one since it was blurry and he was like, “Yeah sure” and my friend took the picture for me. It was an amazing experience. He was so nice! Kenny knows who I am so when I said hi, he was like hi how are you? And when Alfredo came back out, I called his name and he came right over and hugged me so I got a picture with him but I look so bad so I didn’t put it up. Well, this was really long. Justin’s amazing and I’m so happy and grateful for the times that I met him and seen him. -Megan (@MeganSullyyxo) More: I’ve had many Bieber experiences but I’m just…

Jay-Z Calls Watch The Throne Tour The ‘Best Party’

‘The most important thing is that the people that are coming to the concert are leaving there thrilled,’ Hov tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images The fans aren’t the only ones having a ball during Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne Tour. A hoarse Jay walked the red carpet of the GQ Men of the Year party in Hollywood on Thursday, and he could hardly contain his excitement. “We’re having a great time,” Hov told MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. “The most important thing is that the people that are coming to the concert are leaving there thrilled and we’re having an amazing time. As you see, I don’t have a voice,” he laughed. The tour, which kicked off last month in Atlanta , has been running for less than a month but has been met with rave reviews on each outing. Noted for its dual elevated stages and artsy video montages, Hov and ‘Ye’s grandiose WTT run has been one worthy of the royal rap duo. Aside from their Throne cuts, Jay and Kanye have pulled from their respective solo catalogs, performing early hits like “Where I’m From” and “Through the Wire,” as well as new favorites like “Empire State of Mind” and “Runaway.” The highlight, however, is the duo’s current single “N—as in Paris.” Toward the end of the opening show in Atlanta, the two MCs performed the song twice, the next night, three times. At recent New York and Miami concerts, the track has been performed as many as four times in a single night. The Throne are slated to hit Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun on Friday night (November 18) and Atlantic City on Saturday. “It’s like the best party you’ve ever been to every night,” Jay said. “It’s star-studded and it’s music and it’s just unbelievable.” Related Artists Jay-Z Kanye West

Chris Brown Sex Tape With Draya Michele: Real or Fake?

Is Chris Brown the man gettin’ down and freaky with Draya Michele in a new sex tape that’s making the Internet rounds? Or is it some Breezy impostor? Brown’s rep says the person who stars in a new XXX video being shopped around L.A. is definitely not Chris, despite salacious reports to the contrary. According to MediaTakeOut, the mystery seller wants $50,000 in exchange for footage which allegedly features Brown and the Basketball Wives star. Draya Michele, as you can see, is not shy. But did she freak with Breezy? MediaTakeOut claims they have seen the alleged Chris Brown sex tape, but sadly, were forced to pass on the thing because it was out of their price range. Nevertheless, the singer’s rep says “The report is absolutely not true.” A second source in Brown’s camp smells a conspiracy, in fact. “Doesn’t it seem like a coincidence that every time Chris has a major performance or event on the horizon, some fake story like this breaks?” he asked . It’s true. These stories do seem to follow Chris Brown wherever he goes … though he can take responsibility for some of that with his well-documented actions.
