Ian Somerhalder is so much more than a pretty face. While the actor is accustomed to making female viewers scream on The Vampire Diaries , he went to D.C. this week with the goal of making Congress listen. The founder of The IS Foundation – which aims to “positively impact the planet and its creatures” – Somerhalder testified before lawmakers on behalf of the Multinational Species Coalition. Ian Somerhalder Speaks to Congress “Wildlife and environmental conservation has always been not just a passion, but a priority of mine,” he said, hoping to raise funds for organizations that include the World Wildlife Fund, the Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society. A native of Louisiana, Somerhalder has worked tirelessly to clean up disasters in that area such as the April 2010 BP oil spill. But he cast an even wider net in this appearance, referencing African elephants, marine turtles, tigers, gorillas and chimpanzees and saying: “Due to instability or indifference in the areas that many of these species call home, for most of them we are the first, last, and only hope for survival. As the ones with the power to make a difference, the responsibility rests with us. It is imperative that we live up to it. “On behalf of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation and the Alliance for Global Conservation, I urge the Subcommittee to mark-up H.R. 50 and move to reauthorize this important piece of legislation.”

Really? A civil protest is illegal now?? Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and 10 other immigration reform supporters were arrested in front of the White House on Tuesday for protesting against the Obama administration’s deportation of young people and families. Gutierrez has been arrested for protesting twice before — once, in the mid-1990s, against the bombing of Vieques, Puerto Rico, and again in 2010 against the Obama administration’s deportation record. On Tuesday, he and other deportation critics sat down in front of the White House with a sign reading “One million deported under President Obama.” After about 20 minutes, they were arrested by U.S. Park Police. The 11 protesters will be processed and then released after paying a small fine. Gutierrez is a vocal critic of the deportation of young people and families, who he says should be protected from removal by an executive order by the White House. But President Barack Obama has repeatedly refused to make such an order, calling for Congress to act on immigration reform instead. It’s a bad week for Democrats. First, Barack Obama interrupts The Bachelorette during a crucial moment. Now, three days after reports surfaced that David Wu engaged in an “unwanted sexual encounter” with a young California woman last November, the seven-term Congressman from Oregon has resigned. David Wu in Congress “The time has come to hand on the privilege of high office. I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations,” Wu said in a statement. “The well-being of my children must come before anything else. With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis.” The accuser has not been named, but sources say she is the daughter of one of Wu’s high school friends and she left a message on the politician’s office voicemail last year. In October 2010, Wu sent a a photo of himself donning a tiger costume to his congressional staff, many of whom resigned because they believed their boss to be unstable and in need of psychiatric help. The video above, from 2007, does little to discredit that notion.
Beyonce’s got insecurities. We know it’s hard to believe, but she’s a woman, and it’s a true. Beyonce was forced to cut short a TV special she was filming in London after she began losing her voice. She managed to sing a few hits before deciding she couldn’t continue and apologizing. She got the audience to help sing the chorus of “Countdown,” but ultimately ended up leaving the stage. However, some excerpts of her interview have been released. On gross things you may see while she’s on stage “My nose runs a lot and when I’m singing I can’t blow it, so there have been occasions when I’ve ended up with a ‘bubble’ coming out my nose” On sweating while on stage Everyone thinks I have the fans (wind machines) because I’m being fashionable, but I work so hard on stage if I didn’t have them I’d be dripping.” On parts of her body she would change If I could change one part it would be my feet. After all the years dancing they’re a little beat up. And I wear big earrings because I don’t like my ears.” The full iTV special “A Night With Beyonce” will air in December. Congress has been investigating the mega-churches of Bishop Eddie Long, Creflo Dollar and Joyce Meyer for over a year now. The initial congressional investigation led by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) ended with an audit last fall and was concluded but with open questions. Funds and property were the lynch pins for queries. All the churches investigated submitted paperwork that was either missing key facts or were cloudy with names and slight misdirections. In response to that Congress gave suggestions to all ministries. Although Grassley’s inquiry is ongoing, his office released some initial findings Monday. Four ministries have declined to cooperate or have provided incomplete information, Grassley said. They are Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church; Creflo and Taffi Dollar of World Changers Church International; Randy and Paula White of Without Walls International Church; and Kenneth and Gloria Copeland of Kenneth Copeland Ministries. Joyce Meyer Ministries is undertaking internal reforms in the wake of the congressional inquiry into its finances. The extent of the changes is unclear. Grassley’s staff declined to elaborate. And Roby Walker, a spokesman for the Missouri-based Joyce Meyer Ministries, founded by popular TV evangelist Joyce Meyer, said the specifics were being worked out. The action comes nearly a year after Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, launched an inquiry into six ministries including Long’s. Grassley said at the time that he was disturbed by reports about preachers living lavishly while their tax-exempt churches escaped scrutiny. The Finance Committee oversees tax laws and the IRS. Grassley said Monday that Joyce Meyer Ministries and one other ministry, Texas-based Benny Hinn’s World Healing Center Church, had been very cooperative with his inquiry and were taking internal steps to address concerns about their financial dealings. The two ministries have engaged in “open and honest dialogue” with the committee staff, Grassley said in a statement. “Both Joyce Meyer and Benny Hinn have indicated that they are also instituting reforms without waiting for the committee to complete its review,” he said.
