Republican Totally Wants In On This Violent Threat Scare Trend (Updated) [Me Too]

As the hysterical rhetoric surrounding health care reform escalates, many lawmakers are reporting receiving violent threats. Like Eric Cantor , Republican Minority Whip, who says someone totally shot his office , with a gun. [Update: Police confirm an attack on Cantor’s airspace!] Cantor is mad that Democrats are scoring political points by being the victims of actual vandalism and receiving violent threats from crazy people riled up by the out-of-line apocalyptic rhetoric of Republicans and their media allies. So he’s like, hey people are totally threatening to kill me too, so shut up. “I’ve received threats since I assumed elected office, not only because of my position but also because I’m Jewish,” Cantor said. “Any suggestion that a leader in this body would incite threats… is akin to saying I would endanger myself, my wife or my children.” Cantor said he has also received threatening e-mails but will not release them lest they spur any further hostility. By contrast, Cantor said he has “deep concerns” that some in the Democratic party — particularly Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee — are “dangerously fanning the flames by suggesting these incidents be used as a political weapon.” Yes. Right. By publicizing the violent hysteria that’s been whipped up by cynical manipulators of the forces of popular outrage, Democrats are in fact fanning the flames. Just like that guy with Parkinsons was totally asking for it by having Parkinsons and supporting health care reform in public. Cantor also claims that a bullet was shot through the window of his Richmond, VA office this week. Let’s just get the obvious arguments out of the way first: liberals are not the ones carrying firearms to angry public demonstrations. In fact, liberals are not attending angry public demonstrations, because right now liberals don’t actually have anything to be angry about. Liberals just won! Why the hell would they be angrily threatening anyone? If someone did shoot Eric Cantor’s window in Richmond, Virginia, this week, it is exponentially more likely that it was a Tea Party sympathizer than some Obama-voting NoVa yuppie enraged by Cantor’s attempts to obstruct legislation in the House (which he’s failed at again and again and again). An angry, armed liberal would not shoot the House minority whip. They would be more likely to shoot Harry Reid. Or Bart Stupak, who no longer has any friends on any end of the political spectrum. (And honestly—if this theoretical armed and dangerous libtard isn’t shooting some turncoat Democrat, he’s much more likely to go after a right-wing media figure than some loser GOP congressman.) It’s the pissed-off raging teabaggers who are furious with the Republicans right now, for failing to stop the thing they promised they would stop. But we are not even going to blame some stupid Teabagger for shooting Eric Cantor’s office. Because no one gives a shit about Eric Cantor. No one is shooting him or threatening him. He is just another asshole. Meanwhile, in reality: Bart Stupak released the actual tapes of the insane and violent threats he got from right-wing (pro-life!) nuts. Louise Slaughter and Gabrielle Giffords had their offices actually vandalized, for real. (And Slaughter got some crazy voicemail about snipers.) James Clyburn got a fax of a noose. Some asshole teabagger attempted to post the home address of Rep. Tom Perriello on the internet, so that people could harrass him. But he posted the address of Perriello’s brother. And then someone went to Perrillo’s brother’s house and cut the gas line to his grill. Why do Democrats keep fanning the flames by telling people about these things? Sorry Republicans, I know playing the victim is the one thing you guys love doing even more than attacking actual victims of things like hate crimes and economic disadvantages, but no one wants to shoot any of you. [ Photo via Getty Images ] Update: Hah. A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman. Yep, just some health care reform-supporting enraged loony lefitst, wandering around Richmond, Virginia, firing guns in the air near buildings where the House Minority Whip has offices.

Gallup Poll: Americans Support Healthcare Bill’s Passage

PRINCETON, NJ — Nearly half of Americans give a thumbs-up to Congress' passage of a healthcare reform bill last weekend, with 49% calling it “a good thing.” Republicans and Democrats have polar opposite reactions, with independents evenly split. The findings, from a March 22 USA Today/Gallup poll conducted one day after the bill received a majority of votes in the U.S. House of Representatives, represent immediate reactions to the vote. Americans' emotional responses to the bill's passage are more positive than negative — with 50% enthusiastic or pleased versus 42% angry or disappointed — and are similar to their general reactions. Although much of the public debate over healthcare reform has been heated, barely a third of rank-and-file citizens express either enthusiasm (15%) or anger (19%) about the bill's passage. The Bottom Line – Passage of healthcare reform was a clear political victory for President Obama and his allies in Congress. While it also pleases most of his Democratic base nationwide, it is met with greater ambivalence among independents and with considerable antipathy among Republicans. Whether these groups' views on the issue harden or soften in the coming months could be crucial to how healthcare reform factors into this year's midterm elections. Given that initial public reaction to Sunday's vote is more positive than recent public opinion about passing a healthcare reform bill, it appears some softening has already occurred. http://www.gallup.com/poll/126929/Slim-Margin-Americans-Support-Healthcare-Bill-… added by: current89

Obama Signs Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's yearlong health care overhaul drama featured dozens of speeches, contentious debate and a televised summit with lawmakers before a divided Congress passed the bill. An elaborate White House signing ceremony kicks off the next act: selling the sweeping changes to a skeptical public. added by: audi500a

Republican who yelled "baby killer" at Democrat Bart Stupak identified!

Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) has come forward and admitted that he was the one who yelled “baby killer” during the House debate on the health care bill last night. In his statement, Neugeubauer said that he meant to refer to the bill as “a baby killer,” not Stupak himself. That said, he has apologized to Stupak. It should be noted that in addition to the “baby killer” outburst, Neugebauer is also a sponsor of the so-called “Birther Bill,” introduced by Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL), to require presidential candidates “to include with the committee’s statement of organization a copy of the candidate’s birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution.”

The next time somebody asks you why the Democrats did not try harder to get Republicans to help craft this Health Care bill, just play them this video.

That’s right. Some GOP asshole called Bart Stupak, who damn near derailed the entire bill in his desire to make sure it did not fund abortions , a “baby killer”. Does THAT seem like a party that is interested in calm reasonable negotiations? The Republicans decided from DAY ONE that they were not going to cooperate on this legislation, or really ANY of Obama’s legislation, because they want to cripple his presidency.

US House Approves Landmark Bill to Extend Health Care to Millions

WASHINGTON — Congress gave final approval on Sunday to legislation that would provide medical coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and remake the nation’s health care system along the lines proposed by President Obama. By a vote of 219 to 212, the House passed the bill after a day of tumultuous debate that echoed the epic struggle of the last year. The action sent the bill to President Obama, whose crusade for such legislation has been a hallmark of his presidency. Democrats hailed the vote as historic, comparable to the establishment of Medicare and Social Security and a long overdue step forward in social justice. “This is the civil rights act of the 21st century,” said Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House. After a year of partisan combat and weeks of legislative brinksmanship, House Democrats and the White House clinched their victory only hours before the voting started on Sunday. They agreed to a deal with opponents of abortion rights within their party to reiterate in an executive order that federal money provided by the bill could not be used for abortions, giving the Democrats the final votes. Democrats said that in expanding access to health coverage for uninsured Americans, they were creating a new program every bit as important as Social Security and Medicare, while also putting downward pressure on rising health care costs and reining in federal budget deficits. Republicans said the plan would saddle the nation with unaffordable levels of debt, leave states with expensive new obligations, weaken Medicare and give the government a huge new role in the health care system. The debate on the legislation has highlighted the deep partisan and ideological divides in the nation and set up a bitter midterm Congressional election campaign, with Republicans promising an effort to repeal it or block its provisions in the states. Representative Marcy Kaptur, Democrat of Ohio, said the bill heralded “a new day in America.” Representative Doris Matsui, Democrat of California, said it would “improve the quality of life for millions of American families.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/22/health/policy/22health.html?hp added by: current89

Is Stupak a yes vote on Health Care bill? Dem Chariman says yes, Stupak office will not commit. Update: MSNBC says YES!

A Democratic chairman says a leading abortion foe will back President Barack Obama’s health care bill. But the office of Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan says no decision has been made. Rep. Henry Waxman of California says party leaders have been able to secure the support of Stupak. (Read more here ) Well I wish somebody would light a fire under Stupak and get him to stop playing coy and give it up for the President. I just hate a tease. Besides what Democrat could possibly still resist after Obama’s speech yesterday? On the other side of the aisle it looks like the Republicans are making excuses for the vicious outbursts from the Teabaggers.

Tea Partiers Once Again Attacking Congress With Crazy Signs [Teabaggers]

There was another independent, nonpartisan ” Tea Party ” on Capitol Hill today! Just a buncha regular folks with funny signs that aren’t at all racist but are a little bit provided by the RNC. Then they met a mean congressman. This congressman was so mean that when an actual angry mob showed up outside his office screaming “LIAR” at him, in unison, he shut his door , rather than trying to engage this angry mob in some sort of rational discussion of… whether or not he’s a liar, I guess. Then this angry mob sort of hung out outside his office for a while, being angry. If they had been Code Pink they would’ve been dragged out of there by armed guards. Hooray for America. Once the House passes the health care bill someone’s gotta get shot.
