John Williams is 80. What’s His Finest Film Score?

The five-time Oscar-winning (and 47-time Oscar-nominated) composer and conductor John Williams was born 80 years ago today in Flushing, Queens. Somewhere a concertmaster is no doubt preparing a 100-piece orchestra for a rousing, booming rendition of “Happy Birthday,” but for now, we can send our own regards with a discussion of his finest composition for the screen. You only have, oh, 130-something projects to choose from. Williams will be back at the Oscars later this month, a double-nominee for both War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin — neither of which I’d put anywhere near the guy’s 10 best scores. Star Wars , Jaws , Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark are iconic, obvious options for that distinction, though I’ll take Williams’s partnership with Oliver Stone to block — and the sweeping, churning, shocking and utterly evocative JFK for the win: Born on the Fourth of July is up there, too: Anyway, your turn! And happy 80th, Mr. Williams! Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Ryan Gosling Calls ‘Blue Valentine’ A ‘Companion Piece’ To ‘The Notebook’

Actor says his new film is about ‘the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News Ryan Gosling is set to appear on the big screen this month in a new film about love. Of course, while he might forever be remembered as the lovelorn Noah in “The Notebook,” he’s certainly weaving a different story about relationships in the darker “Blue Valentine.” So, does Gosling think fans of the sweeping Nicholas Sparks love story will find anything to relate to in this gritty, sexy new flick? “I think that ‘Blue Valentine’ is a nice companion piece to ‘The Notebook,’ because I feel like both are true,” he told MTV News. “That they’re both possible, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I feel like ‘Blue Valentine’ kind of picks up where ‘The Notebook’ leaves off.” While “The Notebook” deals with the courtship of two people who are head-over-heels for each other, “Blue Valentine” looks deeper at what happens after two people think they’ve gotten their happy ending. “There’s a huge period of time which isn’t in [‘The Notebook’]: The practical, day-to-day living with one another isn’t dealt with in that film,” he explained. “I would meet people when I did ‘The Notebook’ who would come up to me on the street and say, ‘That happened to me; that’s my parents story,’ because these people are saying that’s not realistic love, doesn’t really happen for people like that. “That’s not true, because I’ve met so many people that told me that that’s their story or their parents’ story,” he continued. “But I’ve also talked to a lot of people now that feel like this film is more about what it’s like the day to day, the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Supported by Obama…Here come the food police!

On Wednesday the U.S. Senate passed Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act. After the recent scandal with eggs, and all of the other food safety issues of recent years (meat, peanut butter, spinach), many people believe this is a positive step – and obviously Senate lawmakers, who voted 75 to 23 to pass SB 510, also think the bill is good. A segment of farm advocates have warned that SB 510 is a severe threat to small farms – and by extension, most raw milk producers – because of the sweeping powers it gives to the Federal Drug Administation (FDA) and the possibility for onerous paperwork and other regulations for farmers added by: congoboy
