Newsweek’s Adler: Obama ‘Chickens Out,’ Fails to Push for Taxes to Make ‘SUVs… Prohibitively Expensive’

“Obama Chickens Out on Energy,” a disgusted Ben Adler argued to Newsweek’s The Gaggle blog readers this morning. Adler’s chief complaint with last night’s Oval Office address: Obama didn’t call for massive tax hikes to push Americans to make more politically correct spending choices. The Newsweek writer avoided the T-word until his last paragraph, but he made abundantly clear that he felt that a) American stupidity and short-sightedness was threatening to literally drown Manhattan in rising sea levels and b) Obama was not doing enough to make government force people to make better choices with their own money (emphases mine): In his address from the Oval Office on Tuesday night, President Obama eloquently laid out the case that we have failed to confront our dependence on fossil fuels, and that now is the time for us to do so. Obama acknowledged that our failure to do this so far has been caused not just by obeisance to entrenched interests, but also by “a lack of political courage and candor.” But he failed to use this opportunity to marshal public support for a logical, tangible goal that would reduce our destructive consumption of oil and coal. The idea that we can solve this problem of our massive, inefficient energy use through investing more in R&D is ridiculous. We need to start bringing down our emissions immediately, before Manhattan finds itself under water. Spending more money on research into technologies that may or may not be more efficient, and may or may not be economically viable 10 years from now, is insufficient. There are plenty of technologies, such as driving smaller cars, or hybrids, or taking buses, or living in smaller houses, that do not need to be researched and developed; they just need to be chosen. And they will be chosen if we make indulging in SUVs and McMansions prohibitively expensive, to reflect the social cost of global warming , and the cost of disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon oil-rig explosion that forced Obama to make this address in the first place. Obama should know all this, and his decision to pretend otherwise reeks of the same lack of courage and candor he had just lambasted unnamed predecessors for. Tossing out the pain-free idea that we can invest our way out of this problem is politically convenient, but it is not realistic. Obama swiftly pivoted to sounding like he was filled with steely resolve, saying, “But the one approach I will not accept is inaction.” But merely investing in energy research is little better than inaction. What Obama needed to say , if he was willing to stake his presidency on combating catastrophic climate change, as he had previously staked his presidency—and won—on the proposition that Americans are all entitled to affordable health insurance, was that he would not tolerate anything short of a bill that caps or taxes carbon emissions. He did not, and we will all suffer the consequences.

Guillermo Del Toro Says ‘Hobbit’ Departure Was ‘Extremely Painful’

‘I believe these films will happen,’ filmmaker says in message to fans. By Josh Wigler Guillermo Del Toro Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage In an open letter thanking his supporters (and even “those that never did convert or believed”), Guillermo Del Toro has issued his final farewell to the world of Middle-Earth and further explained his departure from “The Hobbit.” The director announced his withdrawal from the New Zealand-based two-part “Lord of the Rings” prequel early last week, citing the “ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming” as the main reason for his decision. While Del Toro didn’t clarify the details surrounding these delays, his latest message, posted as a reply to a comment from “Pasi” on the TheOneRing.net forum, gives an overview of the emotions driving his departure from the project. “My commitment to the project demanded enormous sacrifices both in personal and professional terms, the consequences of which will ripple for years. I relocated my entire life and family to New Zealand and first came on board in 2008,” he said. “So, while the cited delays, contractual complexities or obstacles cannot be attributed to a single event or entity, you will simply have to believe that they were of sufficient complexity and severity to lead to the current situation. Trust me on this, Pasi — leaving [New Zealand] and the ‘Hobbit’ crew is extremely painful.” Although Del Toro will no longer direct “The Hobbit,” he remains onboard as one of the film’s many writers. Additionally, several of Del Toro’s designs, story boards and animatics that “accurately [represent] my ideas” will remain in place for the films. Producer Peter Jackson’s manager said last week that though Jackson has no intention of taking the director’s chair, he remains committed to the franchise. “I believe these films will happen,” Del Toro stated. “Perhaps even sooner than we may anticipate we will look at the finished film and then — I will tear up whenever I recognize a set or a creature or a quirk created under my supervision. Everyone on [the One Ring message] boards will get two movies. Me? I will be watching filmic family albums. Photos of my children from far away.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hobbit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Bilderberg: The Open Conspiracy

Now that the agenda for global government and a centralized world economic system is public and out in the open, the importance of the Bilderberg Group’s annual conference rests on grooming political candidates. The lion’s share of Bilderberg’s 2010 agenda has already been announced by its members weeks before – it will revolve around a potential military strike on Iran as well as the future collapse of the euro. Trilateral Commission members, who routinely also attend Bilderberg’s annual confab, have let slip that a war on Iran is being seriously debated, while the elite continue to exploit the fallout from the economic crisis to push for centralized financial regulation. The consequences of a military strike on Iran will cause a split between Bilderberg luminaries, just as it did before the invasion of Iraq at the 2002 meeting. During the recent Trilateral Commission meeting in Dublin Ireland, which routinely discusses an almost identical roster of topics to subsequent Bilderberg gatherings, chief advisor to the Russian leadership Mikhail Slobodovsici unwittingly told a We Are Change member he mistook for a colleague, “We are deciding the future of the world….We need a world government,” he said, but, referring to Iran, said “we need to get rid of them.” The continued push to pose as the saviors while offering global governance as the solution to the economic crisis was also re-affirmed in a recent speech by IMF chief and BIlderberg member Dominique Strauss-Kahn, when he told an audience of elitists in Zurich that the globalists need to see the ‘crisis as an opportunity’ to push for “a new global currency issued by a global central bank”. Our sources close to Bilderberg emphasize the fissure that exists within globalist circles. Younger elitists and the nouveau riche are concerned that the global economy is being sunk too quickly and too soon, and that the consequences will be so drastic in the long term that even the wealth and influence of insiders will be threatened. These divisions in the context of geopolitics was also addressed recently by Trilateral Commission co-founder and prominent Bilderberger Zbigniew Brzezinski, who in addition revealed that a “global political awakening,” in combination with infighting amongst the elite, was threatening to derail the move towards a one world government. Stupid American Tourists & the State Dept That Loves Them

Gunmen kidnapped two American tourists in Yemen. They’ve apparently just been released. But who goes “touring” in Yemen? Did they not hear about this dude named Anwar Al-Awlaki, who is behind many recent Islamic terrorist attacks and attempted attacks on U.S. soil. His call to kill Americans might be a hint: Don’t. Go. To. Yemen. Dummies. These people are idiots. And I bet they’re either Muslims, themselves, or really, really delusional left-wingers who still see world-class armpits like Yemen as “exotic” locales for touring, and still romanticize Islam (while they hate all other religions except Buddhism). “Oh, look, Amber. Check out those charming headscarves. How quaint. Ditto for that ornate beheading knife, which I’m sure is only used on sheep.” Then, there are Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd, and Josh Fattal–the three faux-journalists stuck in jail in Iran. The three are really pan-Islamist, anti-Israel far-lefties living in Damascus, Syria. One of them, Fattal, is supposedly Jewish. What kind of dumbass Jew from America goes hiking in Iran? Only an imbecile-owitz. Fattal and the other two knew better. If they’re living in the torturistan of the Assads (Syria), they knew full well not to go “hiking” in Iran. But they did anyway. Now, Iran and the mothers of these three Islamo-pandering stooges are pushing a “prisoner exchange deal” with the U.S. The Sarkozy idiots in France just did one, last week, releasing an Iranian arms dealer and refusing to extradite him to the U.S. for his criminal nuclear parts purchases (on behalf of Iran), in exchange for some far left French academic who went to Iran (another “tourist” who should have been left to rot there). And finally, there are Laura Ling and her sister, Lisa Ling. They’ve written a book about Laura Ling’s imprisonment in North Korea. Who told her to go there? If you go to Kim Jong-Il’s antithesis of Wonka World, you know what to expect. You’re gonna be imprisoned and tortured. She chose to go. But, instead of saying: you went at your own risk and you knew the consequences, so there’s nothing we can do, the U.S. did biz with Kim. Bill Clinton was interrupted from his position as Chief Justice of the Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest to negotiate and rescue these two faux-heroines. Now Laura and Lisa Ling’s book is all the rage on Oprah (for whom Lisa Ling reports regular propaganda), People Magazine, and everywhere else. My favorite headline is the People Magazine blare: “ESCAPE FROM NORTH KOREA.” Um, here’s a tip, People: no one escaped. The U.S. State Department and Bill Clinton repeatedly cajoled and posed to get these two spoiled, whiny women out of North Korea. added by: crystalman

Goldman Sachs investing in factory farms: exporting environmental catastrophe to China

Listening to members of the Senate subcommittee on investigations interrogate Goldman Sachs executives, I couldn't help but think, “chicken.” And then, “where's the beef?” Not because the executives parried, ducked, and even drew out their syllables (much to Sen. Susan Collins's frustration) during their ten-hour grilling. But because the white shoe investment bank and securities firm has, in recent years, entered the messy world of global agribusiness. That's right: Goldman Sachs is in the business of factory farming. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised: in the late 18th century, the area around Wall Street housed slaughterhouses and tanneries. The word capitalism itself is rooted in the trade of (live)stock measured by head (Latin: capita) of cattle. Nonetheless, the parallels between the killings made on Wall Street then and now are not only eerie, but consequential. Just as the securitized debt deals Goldman was hawking may be, in Warren Buffett's words, “financial weapons of mass destruction,” putting the whole economic system at risk of collapse, factory farming carries a parallel risk — of environmental destruction and exploitation of resources, prospects for food security, and animals, all on a mass scale. Unfortunately, the Senate inquiry into Goldman's alleged malfeasance is unlikely to question why the company in 2008 decided to acquire ten intensive poultry farms in China's Hunan and Fujian provinces for $300 million. While Goldman isn't running the farms itself (that's outsourced) it retains control over the prices. “So for the record, that's: U.S. mortgages = bad . . . Asian livestock = good,” is how the website Business Insider described the deal. This isn't the firm's first foray into this arena. Goldman is also principal owner of Burger King, joining Bain and Texas Pacific in 2002 in a $2.26 billion takeover of the fast food giant. Labor activists have criticized Goldman for the poverty wages earned by full-time Burger King workers, even as the firm continues to pay out billions in bonuses, including during the great recession. China Syndrome In China, Goldman may well be producing chicken for its own restaurants, since Burger King has 25 Chinese outlets. In recent decades, both fast food and U.S.-style factory farms that house thousands of animals in tiny cages or stalls in indoor sheds have become increasingly common in China. But such facilities, like the ones Goldman now owns, forfeit any semblance of animal welfare and have immense environmental and social costs. Why would Goldman want to own factory farms? Obviously, it sees an opportunity to make money, no matter the consequences. Meat consumption in China is rising rapidly; since 1980, it's quadrupled. Tyson, Smithfield, and other leading “protein producers” are active in the country, seeking new sources of profit by putting the proverbial chicken in 1.3 billion Chinese pots. Goldman must have wanted a piece of that pot, too. Goldman's poultry purchase could be labeled with the epithet Sen. Carl Levin used repeatedly at the hearings riffing on a Goldman employee's email description of one of the firm's securities schemes (a “shitty deal”). Filthy Lucre According to Wu Weixiang, an associate professor at China's Zhejiang University's Agriculture College, “Domestic animal and poultry waste has become a major source of environmental pollution.” Indeed, China's billions of farmed animals produce an estimated 2.7 billion tons of manure a year–three-and-a-half times industrial solid waste levels–and runoff from livestock facilities has led to a significant “dead zone” in the South China Sea, akin to that in the Gulf of Mexico, which is also the result of agriculture. The poultry deal also contradicts a Goldman business principle. “Our responsibility for environmental stewardship does not fluctuate with changing economic conditions,” the firm's 2008 Environmental Report states. “We hope our work continues to inspire action and creative market-based solutions that can help our environment endure and thrive. Only three percent of China's large and medium-sized livestock operations have facilities to treat animal wastes, according to Xu Cheng, a professor at China Agricultural University. Do Goldman's? Just a year and a half ago, Goldman was kept afloat by billions of dollars in U.S. government funds. Does that mean U.S. taxpayer dollars subsidized cruel, polluting, climate-heating factory farms in China? Even if the connection isn't direct, what are we to make of an elite private equity firm like Goldman helping expand industrial-scale animal facilities? cont. added by: JanforGore

Bristol Palin to Give Speeches For Money

Bristol Palin recently said life is really hard as a single, working mom. Such is life. But it’s about to become more lucrative for her, at least. The 19-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is set to join the speaker circuit and make between $15,000-30,000 per speech, according to reports. Amazingly, this implies there are people willing to pay that amount. “Her teen pregnancy and the birth of her son Tripp resulted in millions of Americans discussing the issue of teen pregnancy,” reads her Single Source Speakers bio. Oh, to be a struggling new mother … giving your infant son a bath and collecting five-figure checks from In Touch Weekly and the like on a semi-regular basis . ” Bristol Palin has since gone on to become a Teen Ambassador for the Candie’s Foundation, and speaks about pregnancy prevention, abstinence, faith and life.” In addition to posing for magazines, Levi Johnston’s baby mama has become an hypocritical advocate for abstinence since welcoming Tripp 16 months ago. In a People cover story a year ago, Palin warned teens about how hard it is to be a teen mom. “Girls need to imagine and picture their life with a screaming newborn baby and then think before they have sex … Think about the consequences.” She said the same in her teen pregnancy PSA for Candie’s.

Stranded Leader Uses an Ipad to Run a Country

If you are stranded and you have no ways of getting home and you are running a country, then you must have the new Apple iPad. When Norway’s prime minister found himself stranded in New York as a huge volcanic cloud grounded flights to Europe, he flipped up his new Apple iPad and did the job to run his country. Jens Stoltenberg told CNN he uses the iPad to manage the situation at home as Norway closed its spaces under threat from the volcanic ash clouds. A photograph of Stoltenberg using the Apple iPad device was posted on the Internet by Norwegian officials with the title “The prime minister is working at the airport.” Stoltenberg told CNN that there are good means of communication, he said that it helps closed in contacts with his office in any times, he said that the activities in Norway are countless in any ways, he is trying to reduce the consequences of the volcano in Norway. It is normal for a Prime Minister to travel abroad, so Stoltenberg’s travel is no different from the other travels, internet plays a great role for leaders to manage their country in any places in the world. He said “I also use an iPad, which is excellent.” Stranded Leader Uses an Ipad to Run a Country is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Asian Businesses Affected By Ash Disruption

Due to the spread of volcanic ash from Iceland volcano, some of Asian businesses have been affected by the disruption of flights. Factories in China’s Guangdong province suffered from the delays of the air shipment of their products such as clothes and jewelry. Big companies in South Korea like the Samsung and LG were unable to air-freight more than 20 percent of their daily electronic exports. Meanwhile, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries said that the hotels and restaurants in Hong Kong were also facing shortages of French cheese, Belgian chocolates and Dutch fresh-cut flowers.
