‘American Idol’ Preview: Can Jacob Lusk Keep It Up?

Casey Abrams will surely pull out all the stops after his near-elimination. By Eric Ditzian Jacob Lusk Photo: FOX Last week on “American Idol,” Jacob Lusk soared, while Casey Abrams collapsed , literally, falling into Ryan Seacrest’s arms as the judges exercised their only save of the season to prevent the bearded fellow from going home. Where does the show go from here? Will Lusk, who bounced back from a few dreadful performances to wow the crowd with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By,” be able to keep it up during Wednesday’s (March 30) Elton John themed evening? Can Abrams buck up after almost chucking up his dinner, following his sing-for-survival take on Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctor”? Those are just two of the questions we’re kicking around as we head into the show. Here’s what we’re hoping to see from each singer when “Idol” goes live. Casey Abrams At this point, there can hardly be any disputing that Abrams is this year’s Andrew Garcia, a guy whose musical stylings were revelatory at first but quickly revealed themselves as one-note. The problem right now for Casey is that he’s been all over the place in recent weeks — wannabe grunge kid here, slicked-back showman there. We don’t expect him to last much longer, but while he’s still there, Abrams should simply embrace who he truly is: a singer who over-relies on his growl and has a ton of fun up on the stage. A slowed-down take on “The Bitch Is Back” could be a nice fit. Haley Reinhart If you believe the tabloid press, Haley and Casey have coupled up behind the scenes. They might be able to spend a whole lot more time together soon. Her best bet to avoid a trip home is to cover a highly recognizable Elton tune and hope the public, merrily singing along, transfers some good will to Haley in the form of votes. Perhaps a husky, bluesy version of “Tiny Dancer” is in order. Jacob Lusk When Jacob sings, you feel it. Sometimes that makes it a terrifying experience, and sometimes it’s a moving one. With a new emphasis on restraining his impulse to over-sing and under-deliver, Lusk would be savvy to cover “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and wait until the final notes to truly sing the hell out of the tune. James Durbin We continue to argue that Durbin is at his best when showing off his sensitive, genuine side, rather than pretending he’s some sort of rock star you’d best keep your sisters and daughters away from. We want the 22-year-old to keep his performance slow this week, which is why we’ll point him in the direction of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters.” Lauren Alaina We fear Lauren will go uptempo once again — she seems to enjoy strutting around the stage like a go-go dancer plopped into a country salon. But she’s at her best while belting over a spare arrangement. So we hope she avoids something like “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and instead reaches for something special with a ballad like “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.” Naima Adedapo The 26-year-old has hung around an admirably long time, but Elton John week should present her a serious challenge. We think. Honestly, we’re never sure what Naima is going to give us week to week. While we’re unchanged in our view that she’d be best served by carving out an Adele-like niche for herself, Naima doesn’t seem intent on defining herself in any one way. So we won’t pick a specific song for her, just cross our fingers that she shows us something like she did during her audition take on Donny Hathaway, when we first tagged her as a contestant to watch. Paul McDonald Paul likes to boogie. There’s no way he’ll play guitar two weeks in a row and avoid those gyrations he calls dancing. But we can hope, right? How about we split the difference and have him hold onto the mic stand for dear life as he delivers a convulsive cover of “Bennie and the Jets”? Pia Toscano Wait, wait, wait — she’s totally going to do a ballad again, right? Even though the judges are nearly down on their knees begging Pia to bust out something with a pulse? Come on, you don’t think she’d actually do something like “Crocodile Rock”? Ha! The gal with the season’s biggest pipes isn’t going to stray from her comfort zone, if only because we’re not sure she’d be able to at this point. So it’s “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” for her. Scotty McCreery Speaking of comfort zones, Scotty ain’t going anywhere that’s not within spitting distance of a Travis Tritt song. We’re done expecting anything else. Listen to the lyrics of “Your Song” and it just feels like a country song. We have a feeling that’s where Scotty is headed on Wednesday. Stefano Langone Aside from Casey, who probably sustained some bruises (and possibly a heart attack), Stefano is the contestant who suffered most last week: He closed his eyes and butchered Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” This week, he’s got to sing an Elton song that drips with so much emotion even Stefano couldn’t fail to connect with some. lyrics As strange and potentially cheesy as it may be, “Candle in the Wind” — arranged in a vaguely contemporary manner — might be in order. Thia Megia Let’s agree to this: If Thia sings the “Circle of Life,” “American Idol” closes up shop forever. After the brutal reception of her “Pocahontas” tune earlier this month, she wouldn’t actually take on “The Lion King,” would she? Hey, the kid seems so mixed up these days, anything is possible. An uptempo number didn’t work for her last week. Nothing, to be frank, might prevent her from getting a trip home. In that sense, then, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” could be the perfect choice. Should the Judges Have Saved Casey Abrams?

Casey Abrams saw his life flash before his eyes last night. His American Idol life, that is. The bearded singer was surprisingly voted out by fans , following a lackluster Motown cover on Wednesday. Like the finalists before him, Casey was then given the chance to sing one more time in front of the judges in order to convince them to use their one-time “save” and keep him around. And it worked! In a decision that left Abrams visibly stunned – and audibly cursing at one point, watch the clip below – J. Lo, Randy and Steven told the contestant he was safe. Casey Abrams Sings for His Spot Two finalists will now be voted off next Thursday, and this summer’s Idol Live tour will include 11 singers instead of the customary 10. Did the judges make the right decision?

‘Breaking Dawn’ Star Talks Bella’s Bridal Gown, Vampire Makeover

Billy Burke, a.k.a. Dad Charlie Swan, tells MTV News he’s mostly ‘oblivious to everything that’s going on with vampires’ on set. By Kara Warner Billy Burke Photo: MTV News It’s been awhile now since we’ve had any updates from the castmembers of the highly anticipated “Breaking Dawn” two-part finale. Thus far this year, there have been steamy bedroom photos , talk of Kristen Stewart’s impressive transformation into a vampire and Peter Facinelli’s thoughts on an epic vampire-on-vampire battle scene at the end of Part 2. When MTV News caught up with “Breaking Dawn” supporting player Billy Burke recently, he reluctantly gave us the vaguest of answers when we asked about his favorite filming moment so far. “We are having a lot of fun,” Burke said while doing press for his upcoming violent thriller “Drive Angry.” “We’re in the midst of that now.” Burke, who plays the (mostly) blissfully ignorant father Charlie to Kristen Stewart’s Bella, said his character is up to the same old tricks in the final two “Twilight” films. “I go back in about a week to continue my job in that movie,” he said. “Which is being oblivious to everything that’s going on with vampires and werewolves.” Those familiar with the vampire films will agree that this is a fair and accurate assessment of his character’s story line. Still, we assumed that surely Burke has been privy to a few fun details, so we asked whether his character, Charlie Swan, finds out that his daughter has become a vampire in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” “In the first part? No,” Burke revealed. “That’s no secret, [for] those who have read the books,” he explained. What about Bella’s wedding dress? Has he seen that yet? “No,” Burke said with finality, declining to divulge any more “Dawn” details. ‘American Idol’ Says Hello To Some Of Top 24, Goodbye to Chris Medina, Others

Weepy Ashley Sullivan and White House intern Molly DeWolf Swensen were also sent packing. By Eric Ditzian Contestants performs Beatles songs on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX On Wednesday, “American Idol” promised all night long to reveal its top 24 contestants, but we ultimately only found out the identity of five semi-finalists. On a Beatles-themed evening, we said hello to the likes of karaoke host (and onetime tormenter of fellow singer Jacee Badeaux) Clint Jun Gamboa, little featured but very soulful singer/songwriter Paul McDonald, and sweet-voiced Naima Adedapo, who left behind a life of scrubbing toilets at a Milwaukee concert venue for life crooning in Idol Land. Yet we also said goodbye to a bunch of reality show hopefuls we’d come to know well. As we await word on Thursday (February 24) of the rest of the top 24, let’s take a moment to remember some of season 10’s most memorable singers who got the boot on Wednesday. Ashley Sullivan We can wonder why producers ever invited the alarmingly fragile 25-year-old to Hollywood — only falling onto her knees and bursting into riotous tears at the New Jersey audition earned her a golden ticket — but there’s no doubting that Sullivan became one of the season’s most recognizable faces (even if that face was most often contorted in tears). While she wanted to be the first show-tune pop star, Sullivan instead became another contestant who melted in the spotlight. She attempted to quit during group week, forgot her lyrics during a subsequent solo performance, and then got married, seemingly on a whim, to her boyfriend when the show made a Vegas stopover. Her wedding present from “Idol” producers? A one-way ticket back home. Chris Medina Most “Idol” observers believed Medina was a lock to make the top 24. Not only did he possess an above-average instrument, but he arrived on the scene with a heartbreaking backstory. His fianc

Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’ Embroiled In Auto-Tune Controversy

Spokesperson for British reality show admits that contestants’ vocals were enhanced. By Gil Kaufman Photo: ITV There were plenty of times during the lackluster recent season of “American Idol” when fans probably wished producers would allow the weaker finalists to Auto-Tune their shaky vocals. Maybe they should be watching England’s “X Factor” instead. A major scandal is brewing over revelations that the show enhanced the vocals of some contestants during Saturday’s season premiere, with some of the very obviously tweaked vocals so clumsily edited they could have been included on a T-Pain single. According to BBC News , a spokesperson for the show — created and produced by former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell (who is bringing it to the U.S. in 2011) — admitted that post-production work was done on some of the singers’ vocals because of interference caused by the number of microphones used during filming. One of the most obvious enhancements was made to contestant Gamu Nhengu’s take on Katrina and the Waves’ iconic “Walking on Sunshine,” during which her vocals are very clearly massaged to keep her in key. The post-production face-lift was almost laughable during singer Shirlena Johnson’s cover of Duffy’s “Mercy,” which had her struggling to stay in tune even amid heavy-handed studio trickery. “The judges make their decisions at the auditions stage based on what they hear on the day, live in the arena,” the spokesman explained about the enhancements added after Saturday’s first program, which was viewed by more than 11 million people. “The footage and sound is then edited and dubbed into a finished program, to deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers. When it gets to the live shows, it will be all live.” The revelation has resulted in a raft of complaints by angry fans, who felt cheated after Cowell told Nhengu that she was “really talented,” which helped her advance to the next round. One contestant who reached the live finals last year slammed the show for trying to deceive fans. Daniel Evans wrote on his Twitter page, “I am big campaigner against auto-tune in the music industry, it’s all over the charts but to hear it on a so-called live show is just plain sad. … It’s like an epidemic, and I won’t be watching again. Sad times for real music fans.” According to England’s Daily Mirror, the vocal trickery expands well beyond the initial audition rounds, with one former unnamed production staffer saying, “It was an open secret on the show that Auto-Tune was used to both make contestants slightly more on-key or off-key. On some occasions it was used to such extremes that while the contestant may have sounded like they were hitting the right note, the backing band had gone right out of tune. … It has been used for a long time on the show both for the auditions and the live shows.” The paper also reported that Cowell ordered an immediate ban on Auto-Tune being used in future shows, while insisting to friends that he was shocked by the claims and plans to launch an investigation.

Bachelor Pad Cast Boots Crazy Michelle; Lunatic Blames Tenley Molzahn

Remember Michelle, the borderline unstable girl who vied for Jake Pavelka’s heart on The Bachelor? No? Well, her stint on Bachelor Pad was even shorter. Early in last night’s season premiere, Michelle clashed with Tenley Molzahn , the runner-up that same season, along with other female residents of the Pad . According to Crazy Michelle, Tenley started a rumor that she slept with Craig “Dangerous” McKinnon the first night in their palatial digs. Bunk bed style. Drama ensued when Michelle locked Tenley in a bathroom and confronted her about this. Tenley understandably felt threatened and broke down crying. On Bachelor Pad , the male castoffs from The Bachelorette vote to evict a girl, and the female rejects from The Bachelor vote to evict a guy each week. Predictably, the men were more or less unified in their decision to vote off the girl most likely to fashion a crude shank and stab someone in the house. “I am still shaken, but I feel relieved now that Michelle is gone,” said Tenley Molzahn in the wake of her two-time rival’s departure. Michelle blamed her exclusively. “I don’t deserve to be treated this way at all,” insane Michelle lamented. “It’s upsetting because Tenley started a rumor that I did something with Craig and that made me upset. Because of that rumor, it ruined my chances [on the show].” The guy sent home was Juan Barbieri, whose fate was sealed before the show even started because of his hookup with another contestant, Nikki, in the past. It didn’t end well between them. “It will be less stressful now that Juan is gone,” Nikki said, having apparently rallied enough of her fellow female contestants’ votes to vote Juan the hell out. Juan, who was in a similar boat as Jesse Kovacs, who’s hooked up with Elizabeth Kitt, said he was “shocked and disappointed” that he was ousted so fast. Ten girls and seven guys remain in the hunt for a $250,000 prize and another 14 minutes of D-list celebrity status. Join us next week on Bachelor Pad!

Justin Timberlake To Voice A Gay Character On ‘The Cleveland Show’

Singer/actor will also portray a ‘singing booger’ on a February 2011 episode, Fox confirms to MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Timberlake Photo: Christian Petersen/ Getty Images Justin Timberlake has been steadily at work building his Hollywood career and will show off his acting chops once again in an upcoming episode of “Family Guy” spin-off “The Cleveland Show.” Fox reps confirmed to MTV News that Timberlake will voice two characters: Paul, the boyfriend of Terry (voiced by “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” actor Jason Sudeikis), as well as a “singing booger” belonging to Cleveland’s stepson Rallo, aptly named “Booger.” The episode is scheduled to air in February 2011. Timberlake is already earning rave reviews for his work as Paul. “Terry falls in love with a guy voiced by Justin,” “Cleveland” creator Rich Appel told Us Weekly. Appel added that Timberlake turns in a hilarious performance: “Justin is just hysterical!” Timberlake’s voice-over work is just the latest in a range of roles for the singer-turned-actor. He has reportedly been offered a role opposite Amanda Seyfried in the sci-flick “I’m.mortal,” in which people don’t get older than age 25. The singer has also been spotted filming the flick “Friends With Benefits” with Mila Kunis in New York and will hit the big screen in the David Fincher-helmed movie “The Social Network.” Timberlake plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who had a hand in the launch of the social-media phenomenon Facebook. Timberlake told MTV News last year that he was excited to work with Hollywood heavyweights Fincher and Aaron Sorkin on “The Social Network.” “To be honest, David Fincher is so ridiculously genius that we’re all just following his lead,” Timberlake said. “I think we want to tell the story, and I want to tell it through Sorkin’s words and Fincher’s eyes. I think Aaron did a lot of research on all of it. I don’t want to speak for another actor, but I think the consensus for all of us is that we just want to make a great film.” What are you expecting from Justin Timberlake’s “The Cleveland Show” appearance? ‘American Idol’ Wannabes ‘In It To Win It’ At New Jersey Tryouts

‘I’m going all the way to Hollywood this time,’ one repeat auditioner tells MTV News. By James Dinh An “American Idol” auditioner Photo: MTV News “American Idol” might not have announced the final judges’ panel for the upcoming 10th season, but that hasn’t kept the show from kicking off the search for new singers. On Tuesday, MTV News caught up with a few “Idol” wannabes at the East Rutherford, New Jersey, auditions to get an idea of who we’ll be rooting for next season. “I did make it to the next round,” Stewart Taylor told MTV News. “I’m very, very, very excited, and I’m not stopping here, baby. I’m going all the way to Hollywood this time, because I did this last year and almost made it. You’re in it to win it.” Gregory Higbee explained the preliminary audition round, which isn’t quite the wacky tryouts you see at the start of the season. “You stand up there, one at a time, in front of the judges and sing your song. It’s usually 20 or 30 seconds long, so after everyone sings, they’ll call you all towards the desk, and they’ll tell you whether you’ve made it or not,” Higbee explained. “There’s no feedback. There’s no ‘You should work on this.’ It’s just ‘I’m sorry, you didn’t make it.’ ” While some contestants, like Heather Snare, were confident they’d make it through, others were surprised when they heard the judges give them the boot. Erik Mason waited about an hour to see the judges but was not picked for the next round. “I was a Disney Dream Ticket holder , and I thought I was good enough, but I guess I’m not what they’re looking for,” he said. Another contestant, Gabrielle Gorman, told MTV News: “I thought it went well, but obviously it wasn’t good enough for this season.” But Gorman kept her head high as she revealed she’ll “have to come again next year and try again.” Marvin Black had already envisioned what it would be like to receive his “golden ticket,” but reality set in when he didn’t make it. “I thought I was going to make my way through, going to sing, get the golden ticket, run with the golden ticket to the backstage,” Black said. “But about after 30 to 45 seconds of singing, they cut my wristband and told me to get out.” Brianna Sent, who dressed up as a life-size banana, believed that if “American Idol” really wanted viewership, they would have let her though, noting, “Everyone was digging it, and it was happening.” How do you think this season of “American Idol” will fare compared to previous ones? Allan McGregor will not face charges after sexual assault allegations

• Rangers goalkeeper had described claims as ‘a vile lie’ • Crown Office says there was insufficient evidence The Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will not face charges following allegations of a sexual assault on a woman, prosecutors said today. McGregor, 28, had been accused of sexual assault and questioned along with the Big Brother contestant Kenneth Tong and the former St Johnstone player Filipe Morais in Glasgow last November. Strathclyde Police launched an investigation after the allegation was made but the Crown Office said today there was “insufficient evidence” to prosecute the three men. A Crown Office spokeswoman said: “A report was submitted to the procurator fiscal at Glasgow concerning Kenneth Tong, Allan McGregor and Filipe Morais in connection with an alleged sexual assault in Glasgow in November 2009. “After very careful and detailed consideration of all the facts and circumstances following an extensive police enquiry, Crown Counsel have decided that there is insufficient evidence to satisfy legal requirements to institute a prosecution. “We have sought to keep the complainer informed throughout the investigation. The Procurator Fiscal has informed her of the decision and has offered her a meeting if she wishes to address any questions she may have.” “The former suspects have been informed that in the circumstances there will be no proceedings,” the spokeswoman added. McGregor had denied the claims as a “vile lie”. “There is not one iota of truth in the allegations,” he said. “I’m devoting myself to clearing my name of these claims.” Rangers Crime guardian.co.uk
