Rima Fakih: The Politically Correct Miss USA?

Miss USA Rima Fakih instantly became the center of controversy after she won the crown last weekend, thanks to some of her stripper pole champion photos. That wasn’t enough to get her title stripped, however, and her reign has begun. Much to the dismay of some critics upset about her Muslim/Arab background. While the contestant herself has spoken little about this, stressing that her family observes both Muslim and Christian holidays, others have been very vocal. Daniel Pipes, who publishes a right-leaning blog on Middle Eastern affairs, pointed to a supposed “surprising frequency of Muslims winning beauty pageants.” While “they are all attractive,” Pipes, a former board member of the U.S. Institute for Peace, said they “make me suspect an odd form of affirmative action.” Pipes didn’t theorize how shadowy beauty-pageant fixers might be greasing the skids for Rima Fakih or contestants, but other political bloggers went further. Did Miss USA Rima Fakih benefit from political correctness? “Miss Hezbollah is now Miss USA,” declared conservative radio talk show host Debbie Schlussel, saying Fakih’s Lebanese relatives had ties to the terrorist organization. Schlussel also said Fakih received financial backing from Hezbollah supporter Imad Hamad and wrote off her win to a “politically correct, Islamo-pandering climate.” Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin saw a conspiracy, too – though generic rather than Muslim-specific this time. Malkin mocked Fakih as a “gaffetastic” contestant. While Fakih bungled her answer about birth control, runner-up Morgan Elizabeth Woolard of Oklahoma was asked for her views on Arizona’s recent immigration law. That question drew boos from the crowd before the judge – actor Oscar Nunez of The Office – could even finish getting it out, but Woolard handled it extremely well. Still, Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson suggested that Woolard’s conservative-leaning informed opinion was enough for the judges to exercise political correctness. Is that why Fakih won the crown over a blonde from Oklahoma? She will keep her crown regardless, but the controversy continues to swirl regarding her victory.

CW’s Cringe-Worthy Plain Jane: Win a Makeover, Qualify for a Man

Summer: when the reality TV freak flag starts flying with conviction. The CW’ s adding a new series to this summer’s pile called Plain Jane , a makeover show for “plain” women who want to impress a secret crush. After the contestant is gussied up by British fashion expert Louise Roe (pictured), she’s shuttled off for a first date with said crush thanks to producers who clue him in with hints like, “Look wowed when she comes out with eye shadow and an Anthropologie dress. Find a way to say ‘Anthropologie’ out loud too. Into the camera.” Is this the most condescending makeover show yet? And should we be surprised considering the credits of the show’s producers?

Jordin Sparks’s New ‘Battlefield’: Broadway

Season six American Idol winner Jordin Sparks is putting her recording career on hold for a new venture — a starring role in the Broadway musical In the Heights , which won the 2008 Tony for Best Musical. She follows in the footsteps of season-four contestant Constantine Maroulis, who was nominated for a Tony in Rock of Ages , and Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, who currently co-star in Hair . Season five winner Taylor Hicks still performs on tour as Teen Angel in Grease too, which should alleviate your concerns that he is, you know, playing craps in a tunnel with Mandisa somewhere. ‘American Idol’ Fans Split On Siobhan Magnus Elimination

Some say it was Siobhan’s time to go, others are outraged. By MTV News Staff Siobhan Magnus Photo: FOX Randy Jackson loved her “punk-country” look and Kara DioGuardi declared, “Guess who’s back? Siobhan!” But this week, “American Idol” voters seemed to side with Simon Cowell when he said of Siobhan Magnus’ performance, “I think the screaming at the end may have gone a little bit — it was almost like you were giving birth up there.” And so the 20-year-old Cape Cod resident is the latest “Idol” hopeful to get the boot — to the surprise of “Idol” experts MTV News spoke with on Thursday (April 29). As expected, fans are split on the decision, with some arguing it was Siobhan’s time to go and others declaring the elimination to be a disgrace. “Siobhan was the most interesting and entertaining of the singers, and man, can she sing!” wrote MTV News reader Violet. “If you have a good ear and any experience singing, you would hear that she hits every high note dead on. That’s not a screech. She has an incredibly wide range and just maybe needed some more positive comments from the judges?” Not so, contends reader Eric. “Siobhan has a wee bit too much ‘screech’ in her voice,” he wrote. “She needs more experience. But ultimately she’ll [get] there if she doesn’t lose interest.” According to reader Peggy Sue, Siobhan’s problem was simply a matter of failing to pick the songs that fit her vocal strengths. “Siobhan was signing from her throat, not the right place, so when she sang softly with lower notes it sounded weird,” she wrote. “That’s why she sounded so good on ‘Think’ — it forced her to get out of her throat. I agree that she sounded stupendous on those kinds of songs, she should have stuck to them. But instead she sang a lot of slower ballads that sounded unpleasant.” While there’s no agreement about the justice of Siobhan’s ouster, there are a range of opinions about the contestant who really deserves to go home. Some feel Lee Dewyze has been over-praised by the judges, while a few have tapped Casey James as the most deserving bootee. “I do not understand what Americans see in Casey James,” writes Luckybarbe. “Just listen to his voice, OMG it’s not that good, it’s sort of annoying. I think women are looking at his looks more than listening to the way he sounds.” Do you think it was Siobhan’s time to leave ‘American Idol’? Let us know in the comments below! Why Lee Dewyze Will Win ‘American Idol’

Crystal Bowersox might be the front-runner, but so was Adam Lambert, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lee Dewyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox I hate to break it to you, fellow members of Bowersox Nation, but our girl isn’t going to win “American Idol.” It pains me to write that, as I love Crystal and all that she stands for (shoot, I feel like I know her ), and I really want her to win, but it’s just not in the cards. Not with Lee Dewyze still shrugging in the background, anyway. See, no matter how much Simon Cowell wants to shout it, “American Idol” is not “a singing competition”; it’s a popularity contest. If the show were based on vocal ability, producers would have just ended the competition last week, after Bowersox leveled the room with her tearful take on “People Get Ready,” or last month, when she lapped the field with “Me And Bobby McGee,” or, well, you catch my drift. At this point, the questions about her “marketability” or “relevancy” are moot: Her voice is timeless. She has proven that she can sing anything, anytime, anywhere, and she can do it better than anyone else on the show. So of course, she will still end up losing. Because “Idol” isn’t based on talent (I mean, it is up to a certain point — usually about the time we reach the top 10, then things tend to get all high-schooly). It’s based on intangible stuff like “familiarity” and “likability.” And those are the two categories in which Bowersox doesn’t dominate. For better or worse, viewers tend to vote for the contestant they feel they have the most in common with, the one they feel is a nice person, the one they already feel like they hear four times an hour on the radio. And more often than not, that contestant happens to be a slightly scruffy, well-proportioned, slightly hunky, kinda underdoggy, totally inoffensive guy. And this year, that guy is Lee Dewyze. Let me stop here for a second and say that I don’t dislike Dewyze in any way. I actually don’t have any kind of opinion of him (and I don’t think I’m in the minority by saying that), which doesn’t exactly bode well for his post-“Idol” career. After thinking about it for a full five minutes, here’s about all I can come up with to say about him: He seems like a pretty nice guy. He has good teeth. He is probably nice to animals and children and the elderly. Sometimes he wears a goofy knit cap. He plays the kind of bland, radio-ready sorta-rock that continues to mystify me. Of course, none of this makes him interesting — and, frankly, when he speaks, I tend to lose consciousness — but it makes him a shoo-in to win season nine of “American Idol.” “Idol” voters don’t want “interesting”; they want “nice,” “dependable,” “relatable.” This doesn’t change — or, at least, it hasn’t for the past three seasons. Just look at last year, when everyone was rushing to crown Adam Lambert the champion. I argued that Kris Allen would win “Idol” because “he seems like a solid, trustworthy guy — like a combination cowboy/firefighter, or a youth minister (which I think he actually is). If you think about it for a few seconds, you’ll probably realize that you know someone exactly like him — and you are not alone. Everyone in America knows someone like Kris Allen. Or, at least, more people know someone like him than they do Adam Lambert.” As it turns out, I was right. So with something like four weeks left in the competition, I’m calling it for Lee Dewyze. He reminds me too much of Allen in every possible way, right down to the fact that most of the media that covers “Idol” seems hell-bent on making him the “underdog,” despite all evidence to the contrary. Plus, to be honest, it’s not like Crystal has really salted this one away, either, what with the whole “I-quit, no-wait-I-don’t” drama surrounding her last week. There are too many holes in her story. She is considered too weird by the people who actually vote on this thing, and eventually — probably in the finale — her luck will run out. I am not alone in thinking this, either. Just Tuesday, I spoke to a pair of “Idol” experts for a piece I was working on called “Can Crystal Bowersox Lose ‘American Idol’?” Sadly, they both agreed that, yes, she could, and it would probably be to Dewyze. Of course, I’m willing to be proven wrong — I just don’t think I will be. America will go for Lee Dewyze, because they’ve gone for him in season seven (David Cook) and eight (Allen). They will go for him because he’s the safe, familiar choice, and because he seems nice. But most of all, they will go for him because he’s not Crystal Bowersox. That’s a shame, but it’s not exactly shocking. America likes things safe, and this is ” American Idol,” after all. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .

Big Brother Boneheads Matt McDonald, Adam Jasinski Running Enormous Drug Ring?

The saga of former Big Brother contestant Matt McDonald has gone from bad, to worse, to practically unbelievable in the span of about 72 hours. Matt was arrested for beating his pregnant girlfriend last weekend, but reached a new low – we thought – by harassing her to drop the charges. By phone, from behind bars ! Dude now faces the additional, serious charge of witness intimidation … but oh, if only that were it for ol’ Matty today. He’s got far worse issues. While investigating Matt for the above incident(s), authorities tied him to a conspiracy to distribute oxycodone … with a former Big Brother co-star. These Big Brother bums are headed to the big house . Adam Jasinski , if you recall, won Season 9, and was indicted in federal court in Massachusetts last year for starting drug ring with the winnings. Now, according to a new indictment, Matt McDonald was involved in the alleged drug ring run by Adam Jasinski from April 2008 to October 2009. McDonald and Jasinski were allies inside the Big Brother house … and apparently after, after Adam pooled his $500,000 prize into mucho drugs. If convicted of the drug charge, McDonald faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. Jasinski? Probably even more than that. Wow.

Mary J. Blige Builds A ‘Stairway To Heaven’ For ‘Idol Gives Back’

Singer is joined by Travis Barker, Orianthi, Steve Vai and even ‘Idol’ judge Randy Jackson for Led Zeppelin cover. By Larry Carroll Mary J. Blige (file) Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images As always, the “Idol Gives Back” episode of America’s most popular show was filled with emotional moments, genuine sentiment and water-cooler-worthy performances. But once the smoke cleared and the charity work had been nobly performed, it was clear that the evening’s highlight revolved around an all-star band, a rock classic and a Stairway to Heaven. Mary J. Blige and her all-star band of Travis Barker, Orianthi and Steve Vai — along with “Idol” judge Randy Jackson laying down bass guitar — performed a touching rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” It was an epic moment in a tender night of compassion, philanthropy and memorable performances. Accompanied by the same band that supported her on a recent career-makeover effort in the recording studio, Blige’s cover appeared on the international re-release of her album Stronger With Each Tear, which came out in March. “I am a Led Zeppelin fan,” Blige told MTV News recently. “I’m not going to say I’ve been to their concerts, but I’ve listened to their music since I was a child, and it’s always moved me, especially ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ ” She certainly was on Wednesday night (April 21), as the audience seemed thrilled with the performance — and saw her get away with something even Wayne Campbell could not. “Heaven” was composed by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant for the band’s classic fourth album — dubbed Led Zeppelin IV by their fans — and in the ’70s ranked as the single most-requested song on FM radio stations. Recorded in 1970, “Stairway” has gone on to become one of the all-time great rock anthems. Other stars illuminating the evening’s “Idol Gives Back” festivities included Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and the president himself, Barack Obama. According to an announcement made by Simon Cowell during the show, the evening’s festivities had raised over $15 million for charity. What did you think of Mary’s Zeppelin cover? ‘Idol Gives Back’ Gets A Hand From Alicia Keys, Joss Stone, Elton John

Black Eyed Peas and Carrie Underwood also perform during ‘American Idol’ fundraising effort. By Gil Kaufman Alicia Keys (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Most of Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was given over to the all-star fundraising effort “Idol Gives Back,” featuring performances from Alicia Keys, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and others uniting to raise funds for children’s charities in the U.S. and abroad. There was, of course, also work to be done, as another contestant faced elimination at the end of the nearly two-and-a-half-hour special. But the majority of the show was focused on performances at the “Idol” studios in Los Angeles, as well as a second location at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where Queen Latifah hosted in front of a rowdy crowd hyped for Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas and other special guests. The evening opened with President Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, delivering a pre-taped message from the White House. ” ‘American Idol’ has always been about changing lives, on the stage and around the world,” the president said. “That’s why Michelle and I want to take a moment to thank everyone watching tonight for your continued generosity as part of ‘Idol Gives Back.’ ” The top 12, all wearing crisp white outfits, were reunited for one last group number, the 1986 Freiheit song “Keeping the Dream Alive,” followed by the Black Eyed Peas, who beamed in for their tune “Rock That Body” on a stage shrouded in fog and crisscrossing lasers. As a half-dozen futuristic robot-girl warriors flashed their ray guns at the crowd, Fergie worked the stage in a metallic snakeskin body suit and knee-high matching boots for the uptempo dance tune. This week’s mentor, Alicia Keys, sang her sultry new ballad “Un-Thinkable” while wearing a silky black pantsuit, and then sat down at the piano for a forceful run through the sequel to her hit duet with Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind (Pt. II) Broken Down.” Former “Idol” winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood dropped by to sing her inspirational ballad about trying to make a difference in the world, “Change.” Though former Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox was scheduled to perform, she was grounded by the Icelandic volcano, but still made an appearance in a touching segment about how the right drugs helped save the life of a desperately ill 7-year-old girl with pneumonia and AIDS. She later appeared in a satellite segment singing her hopeful tribute to children in need, “Universal Child,” a new song that was available for download on iTunes after the show. English guitar icon Jeff Beck was joined by Joss Stone and the Jubilation choir for a slinky ramble through “I Put a Spell on You,” which featured plenty of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s legendary whammy-bar pyrotechnics. Mary J. Blige also lent a hand, hooking up with Orianthi, Travis Barker, Steve Vai and “Idol” judge Randy Jackson to perform Led Zeppelin’s rock classic “Stairway to Heaven.” Wearing dark shades, black leather pants and a black leotard with mirrored shoulder pads, Blige brought some soul power to the rock anthem, with Barker bashing out the rumbling rhythm and Vai and Orianthi trading off riffs as the tune built to a titanic peak. The night’s final performance came from Elton John, who encouraged viewers to get educated about HIV/AIDS and to get tested for the disease before singing his ageless piano ballad “Your Song.” Among the stars lending a hand through video segments chronicling childhood poverty and hunger were Jennifer Garner, former guest judge Victoria Beckham, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, George Lopez, David Duchovny, Chris Rock, Josh Groban, Morgan Freeman, Slash, Jim Carrey, Wanda Sykes and Ben Affleck. Garner visited an Appalachian town near hear hometown in Charleston, West Virginia, where 45 percent of children are growing up in poverty. She met a family of six that lives in a cramped two-room trailer with no heat and is getting some educational help from Save the Children, one of the night’s beneficiaries. Freeman and Randy Jackson traveled to Mississippi and watched as Save the Children helped spread literacy to help rural children get out of poverty. DeGeneres was in Monrovia, California, with David Arquette to see the efforts of Feeding America, which provides food to families in need, while former “Idol” winner David Cook went to Ethiopia on behalf of the U.N. Foundation to see their work trying to help save young girls from servitude. After taking a year off in 2009 due to the financial crisis, Wednesday night’s show was the third edition of “Idol Gives Back,” and near the end of the show, Simon Cowell announced that $15 million has already been raised. Bad Next Top Model of the Day

I am surprised this show is still on the air. Not one of the winners of this show has ever become a Top Model, leading me to believe that the whole thing is nothing but serious bullshit lies…you know a scam to make Tyra more money than her fat ass has already managed to make with her bullshit….so I take pleasure in seeing her contestant fall twice on her model walk….just to remind you all that this show is retarded, and to take pleasure in watching some girls dreams come shattering down in a 45 second clip….it’s like these 45 seconds put her in her fucking place and I like reality checks like that….
