Was Adam Lambert A Good ‘American Idol’ Mentor? Experts Weigh In

‘Adam can say he was on the show last year, and he knows how it feels,’ outgoing bandleader Rickey Minor says. By Gil Kaufman Adam Lambert backstage at “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Adam Lambert has never been shy about expressing his opinions, but on Tuesday night, the season-eight “American Idol” runner-up provided some of the most candid and spot-on advice of any mentor in the show’s history. While previous mentors have typically offered sweet nothings, praise and light advice to the contestants, like another season-nine guide, Usher , Lambert dug in and really encouraged the singers to push the envelope and display their personalities, providing concrete suggestions for molding their performances. He was unafraid to criticize their choices — counseling Andrew to punch up his version of “Hound Dog” and loosen up a bit and suggesting to Siobhan Magnus that her arrangement of “Suspicious Minds” needed to be sped up a bit to really pop — and praise them when they made the right ones. The results didn’t always translate into great performances, but Lambert’s efforts drew praise from no less an expert than outgoing “Idol” musical director Rickey Minor . “From the first day I met Adam in Hollywood Week — and he stood out right then — I’ve always thought he was someone to listen to,” Minor told MTV News on Wednesday, the day after it was announced he’d be leaving “Idol” at the end of this season for “The Tonight Show.” “This is a visual art as well, and I think he did really well, because he’s been in the competition and he’s in their age range. It’s not like some star who’s been around for 30 years saying, ‘You need to do this.’ Adam can say he was on the show last year, and he knows how it feels. It was a great idea to have him on.” Minor said Lambert’s honesty and truthfulness with the contestants, both good and bad, was refreshing. “He was the one who told them, ‘No one told me I’d be working 10 times as hard [once I left the show],’ ” Minor said. “His thing was to challenge them, and I have a lot of respect for him having already worked with him. And now that he’s come in and talked to these kids, it’s even bigger.” Close “Idol” watcher MJ Santilli, who runs MJsBigBlog.com , said she would have preferred that an “Idol” elder like Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson be the first former contestant to return as a mentor. “But having said that, I think Adam did a fine job,” she said. “He’s got something many of this year’s contestants lack: the ability to craft a performance that’s vocally, visually and emotionally stunning.” With that unique combination and his no-nonsense attitude, Santilli said Lambert’s suggestions to the nine finalists was refreshing. “Coming from that perspective, Adam was perfect,” she said. “He gave the kids good advice on how to make their performances more exciting. Adam’s an articulate guy who expresses himself well. He was honest and constructive.” In fact, on a night when the four panelists often agreed in the same bland way or disagreed on minor points, Santilli said Simon, Kara, Ellen and Randy “might want to take a few pointers from [Adam].” How did you think Adam did as a mentor? American Idol Producer: Adam Lambert Should Be a Major Star!

With the talent level low and the contestants so similar, this season of American Idol has been considered a bore by most viewers. Ratings certainly reflect a drop in interest. For that reason, producers are praying Adam Lambert will deliver a much-needed dose of excitement tonight, as he plays mentor to the remaining finalists. But Ken Warwick tells Entertainment Weekly that he’s also counting on the reverse coming true: he hopes the Lambert’s appearance on the show will resurrect this singer’s sidetracked career. “The guy is an incredible talent, and he had an incredible following. And it kind of upsets me that at the moment he’s not doing quite as well,” the executive producer said . “I don’t know what possessed him to do what he did at the AMAs , but he’s still struggling to live it down. “Hopefully… we can start putting him back firmly where he belongs, as a major star. Because the guy is an incredible talent. He genuinely is. And it kind of breaks my heart to see someone with that much talent struggle a bit. So hopefully we can do back for him as he can do for us.” Adam Lambert returns to the stage that made him famous this week. Aside from mentoring tonight, Lambert will return to the American Ido l stage tomorrow. From there, it’s off to the GLAAD awards Saturday evening for another performance. Wrote Adam, regarding the event: “GLAAD has advocated for out music artists, including myself, and I am proud to be part of the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards this year. GLAAD’s work to share stories that grow acceptance and understanding about the gay and transgender community is so important in our culture today.” Will tune in to watch Lambert on Idol this week?

Things We All Know About Ellen DeGeneres: Hates America, Loves to Dance!

How do you know you’ve made it in Hollywood? When you have an entire category of Family Feud dedicated to things that are publicly known about you! Unfortunately for Ellen DeGeneres, this bit of flattery hit a rough patch when one of the contestants guessed something about Ellen that nearly ground the game to a halt.

Jon Gosselin Makes Good on Lawsuit Threat, Kate Gosselin Calls Out "Pathetic" Maneuver

A man of his word, Jon Gosselin made good on a threat to file legal papers asking a Pennsylvania judge for primary custody of his children with Kate Gosselin. Jon also wants the child support order that is currently in place – in which the huge douchebag is on the hook for a huge sum every month – reviewed by the judge. Jon claims the arbitrator in the divorce “failed to take into consideration the numerous factors provided for by the law in PA.” Such as Jon being a broke loser? His lawyer, Anthony F. List, said earlier this week that Kate is an “absentee mom” and that her being on Dancing with the Stars is the latest, flagrant example. Team Kate hit back that Jon’s attempt to win custody is “pathetic.” The worst part about this custody fight? Someone has to win. Mark Momjian, her attorney, hit back at him , saying Jon’s motives are transparent: “He’s never questioned her ability to provide for their children. He’s out of the limelight, while 23 million people are watching Kate on Dancing with the Stars .” Way to get in an irrelevant dig there about who’s more famous. Momjian adds, more validly, how it’s ironic that Kate is effectively the breadwinner, but when she goes to earn a living he then says she’s not caring for the kids. The lawyer defended Kate’s parenting and says the legal documents filed by Jon are so “incoherent” and flawed that he expects the judge to throw the case out. Momjian says that Jon Gosselin, who owes $20,000 a month in support and may be simply looking for a way to circumvent that, is out for Jon alone, adding: “Do I think his motivation is the children’s best interest. Squarely no.” Who should have custody of the Gosselin children?

Michael Lynche: Saved by the Judges!

Phew. That was close. Due to a collective, nationwide brain fart, Michael Lynche found himself in the bottom three last night on American Idol . Once Aaron Kelly was deemed safe, Lynche then found himself in the bottom two alongside Andrew Garcia – and then the bottom one! Granted, Big Mike’s rendition of “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday was overblown and far from his best. But, unlike viewers around the country, the judges were willing to give Lynche another shot: they unanimously voted to save him from elimination. Think they made the right call? The excitement, and flamboyance, on American Idol will be ratcheted up next week: Adam Lambert will mentor the contestants. Regarding anyone’s fears, Adam Tweeted this week: “Don’t worry America: I will be beyond family friendly. Relax and enjoy. For Your Entertainment.”

Katie Stevens Makes ‘Let It Be’ Her Own On ‘American Idol’

‘You’re blossoming,’ Kara DioGuardi tells the Connecticut teen during Lennon/McCartney week. By Larry Carroll Katie Stevens performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox It’s one of the most famous songs of all time, and the lyrics are instantly recognizable to anyone from Dallas to Dubai. But Tuesday night (April 6) on “American Idol,” one of the contestants made “Let It Be” her own. Wearing a short pink dress with her hair pulled back, Connecticut’s Katie Stevens broke out of the “Idol” top-nine episode with a somber rendition of the 30-year-old song. Following a thunderous response from the audience — which included her family, holding an “I love my family because they love Katie Stevens” sign — the judges unanimously gushed over Stevens’ heart-tugging vocals. “That was your best performance ever,” Randy Jackson beamed, praising the song that Katie said her father used to play for her in the car. “That was ridiculous.” Ellen DeGeneres, meanwhile, praised her for “changing it just enough without disrespecting the song,” while Kara DioGuardi agreed, saying, “You make the song your own. You’re blossoming.” “It felt, to me, that you were singing it about somebody rather than being robotic,” Simon Cowell agreed. “And that’s a big difference.” Paul McCartney certainly wasn’t being robotic when he recorded “Let It Be” in early 1969 for the release of the same-named album that marked the Beatles’ final effort. Recorded during a period of rapidly increasing acrimony between the members of the world’s greatest rock band, McCartney has said that he was inspired to write the song after a calming dream about his mother Mary — who had died of cancer when he was 14 — during the tense period of his life. Ranked #20 on Rolling Stone ‘s 2004 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, “Let It Be” reached #1 on the Billboard charts in April 1970. In perhaps the latest great testament to its legacy, “Let It Be” has become an “Idol” favorite: Brooke White performed it in season seven, while Kris Allen put his unique spin on the song during a recent results show. Confirmed: Adam Lambert as American Idol Mentor

In late February, it was reported that Adam Lambert would perform on American Idol . Now, we can confirm that the former runner-up won’t just sing “Whattaya Want From Me” on the April 14 results-show telecast – he’ll serve as a mentor to the finalists on the night before! No word yet on what theme the contestants will tackle during the special visit, but this much is certain: if anyone can spice up this lackluster group of singers, it’s Adam Lambert. Lambert will be the first former Idol to act as a mentor less than a year after he left the show. Many will believe he’s too inexperienced for the gig… but Miley Cyrus took on the same role a couple weeks ago and she’s younger than every current contestant except Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly. Do you think he should be a mentor? While you ponder that question, click on the photos below, all of which are courtesy of Adam’s recent trip to London: [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com]

Celebrity Apprentice: 5 Creepy Stills from the ‘Harry Potter’s Surreal Life Mansion’ Challenge

Celebrity Apprentice ‘s stars were asked to horrify children last night, and everyone pulled through with flying colors. As part of their challenge to make a 3D display advertising Universal Orlando’s “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” attraction, the celebs built and acted as characters inside muggle-friendly haunted castles. Some of the contestants (Michael Johnson, our girl Summer Sanders ) kept the freakishness to a minimum, while others (just wait) gave unsuspecting children the kind of chills best defined as “Voldemort kisses.”
