Race Matters? Quentin Tarantino Drops The N-Word During Press Conference Backstage At The Golden Globes

SMH. Quentin Tarantino continued to push Spike Lee’s buttons during the press conference following his Golden Globe Awards win. Via E! News reports : Less than a minute into his press conference backstage at the 70th Annual Golden Globes, the Django Unchained winner dropped the N-word. The usually bustling press room fell silent for a second; a reporter could be heard letting out a whistle, as in, “Oh, boy.” The filmmaker’s choice language came as he fieldied a question about his controversial, slavery-era spaghetti Western. Tarantino was not apologizing. Critics who think the N-word should not have been spoken by his 19th century characters, the mile-a-minute Tarantino argued, are “saying I should massage. They’re saying I should whitewash. They’re saying I should lie.” Don Cheadle, a winner for House of Lies, who took the stage right after Tarantino, couldn’t resist picking up the thread. “Please no [N-word] questions,” Cheadle told reporters. “Black people questions are all right.” For the record, Cheadle said he hadn’t seen Django, but was looking forward to checking it out. Is Tarantino going too far by using the word outside of the film? Is he just trying to make a point or do you think he’s actually fond of this particular racial slur? Is it EVER okay for whites to use the n-word?

Jodie Foster on Golden Globes Speech: It Speaks For Itself

Understandably, Jodie Foster’s Golden Globes speech sparked discussion raised a lot of questions Sunday night. Three main points she sought to clarify: She’s NOT retiring from acting, despite strong allusions to doing so. She is extremely close with Mel Gibson and is not ashamed of this. The “coming out” portion of her speech is what it is. In her wide-ranging speech, the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award winner, 50, acknowledged that she’s gay and seemed to hint at retirement. However, on the latter topic, she told reporters a different story later. “I could never stop acting. You’d have to drag me behind, like, a team of horses,” she said, noting that her broader point was “that people change.” “Change is important. You know, hopefully I’ll be doing different things than I did when I was three years old and six years old and ten years old and 20 years old.” “My work is evolving.” As for the more personal aspects of the speech, in which Foster mentioned her former partner and explained she “came out a million years ago” in private? “The speech kind of speaks for itself. It’s a long career, and not just a career; it’s friendships and relationships. I feel like I’m graduating from something,” she said. “It’s a big moment, and I wanted to say, you know, what’s most in my heart.” Jodie Foster Golden Globes Speech The mother Charlie and Kit, her children with Cydney Bernard, added that she wasn’t worried about regretting her Golden Globes speech the day after. “It’s an expression of who I am and what I’m thinking and feeling,” she said. Foster also raised eyebrows when she not only acknowledged close friend Mel Gibson , but said he “saved her,” in her speech – as Mel looked on tearfully. “I know Mel Gibson extremely well, and he’s somebody that I love and that I have worked with and that I respect, and it’s not difficult to say that,” she said. “You know, it’s very easy to say that. The man that I know is a true and loyal friend; he is considerate, loving,” she said of the controversial actor. As for her social commentary on celebrity and media culture – which manifested itself this summer when she defended Kristen Stewart – she added: “I think it’s important that when people are struggling, that you not run away from them if you love them. Kristen, I mean, I look at the room tonight.” “You know, Kristen Stewart and Claire Danes, Jennifer Lawrence, all these young women that I worked with who basically were child actors like I was.” “I feel in many ways very protective of them, because even though I think I have managed to get through the process relatively sanely, I had my scars.” “I hope to be in some ways a member of their family that’s protecting them.”

Karrueche Tran on Chris Brown: I Do Love Him!

Karrueche Tran. The sexy, 5’1” biracial fashionista and model has become, over the past year, a crucial cast member of the must-watch Chris Brown-Rihanna soap opera. Who is the real Karrueche Tran? An opportunist or a private girl caught in a very public situation? A new interview with VIBE suggests the latter. Karrueche, whose clothing line “The Kill” made her a Chris Brown business partner – sexual partner came later – opens up about the complex relationship: “It’s a lot going on but it could be a lot worse,” she says of Rihanna and Chris Brown flaunting their love on Instagram. “And that’s how I look at life.” “I take it for what it is. I move forward, grow from it and at this point, that’s what I’m doing. I’m not gonna sit and dwell and become consumed in negativity.” “I could very much be that person, especially when things are so public and so thrown in my face. But like I said, things can be much worse. So I’m good.” Does she see a future with CB romantically, after all they’ve been through in the past year? “At the end of the day, he will always be a friend. We’ll always care about each other. We won’t allow that to interfere. Our business is business.” “I do care about him and I do love him,” she says of the controversial singer and her ex-BF. As for what Karrueche Tran would say if she, Rihanna and Chris Brown ever sat down in the same room together and hashed this drama out? “For everybody, emotionally, that would just be way too much. I’m a very mature person so if the time ever did come where we would need to sit down and talk, I’d do it.” “I’m a mature person. I can work it out but it would be a lot. (Pause) Yeah, it would be a lot.” If that ever happened, the celebrity gossip and Twitter universes would probably explode due to collective overuse. But it would make for great copy. What do you think of Karrueche Tran? Someone who genuinely cares for Chris and was blindsided by his reconciliation with Rihanna? Or someone with an agenda?

Chris Brown: Cheating on Rihanna With Sommer Gargan?

Rihanna and Chris Brown looked happier than ever celebrating Christmas Day together at the Lakers game, then New Year’s Day snuggled up in bed. As usual, however, drama is never far from the controversial couple. Just before Christmas, he jetted off to Paris with ex Karrueche Tran, and allegedly banged French reality star Ayem Nour with Karrueche’s permission. Now, he’s also been linked to Sommer Gargan. Whoever that is. “He slept with her two different times at his recording studio,” an insider tells celebrity gossip magazine In Touch of Gargan, a blonde executive assistant. This wasn’t a one-off foreign booty call like Nour, either. After meeting through mutual friends, “They’ve been texting ever since … even when he’s with Rihanna.” Day. Um. After a long period of speculation, Rihanna and Chris Brown resumed their friendship-turned love affair in earnest this fall after he broke up with Karrueche. They’re clearly exchanging bodily fluids again … the question is whether it’s monogamous. Particularly on Chris’ side. Guy seems to be available whenever. If In Touch ‘s story is true … talk about a cruel Sommer . Sorry. Fittingly, Rihanna and Chris released a HOT duet together called “Nobody’s Business” this fall, reportedly all about their tumultuous relationship. We’re guessing that would be their response to this story.

Stephen Jackson Fined For Tweet Threatening Serge Ibaka

Stephen Jackson of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs has been fined $25,000 … for a Tweet in which he threatened Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jackson posted the threatening Tweet after Ibaka and L.A. Lakers forward Metta World Peace got into it during the Thunder’s 114-108 victory on Friday night. The post has since been deleted, but multiple outlets reported it read: ”Somebody tell serg Abaka. He aint bout dis life. Next time he run up on me im goin in his mouth.” “That’s a promise. He doin 2 much.” Spurs general manager RC Buford condemned the Tweet Sunday: “The recent public comments made by Stephen Jackson are absolutely unacceptable, cannot be tolerated and do not reflect the standards held by the San Antonio Spurs.”  The team said Stephen Jackson would be fined, but the punishment would ”be imposed in consultation and coordination between the Spurs and the NBA.” It’s unclear if Jackson faces additional punishment from San Antonio. He apologized to Ibaka on Twitter on Sunday, calling his post ”unprofessional and childish.”

George Will on Gay Marriage: Opposition Literally Dying

George Will of ABC News says the opposition to gay marriage in the United States is slowly but quite literally dying; it’s primarily older residents, he told This Week . As the Supreme Court prepares to take up two landmark cases on same-sex marriage, Will said yesterday that it’s clear where public opinion is headed. George Will on Gay Marriage “There is something like an emerging consensus,” the conservative writer said, noting voters in three states recently endorsed same-sex marriage initiatives. “Quite literally, the opposition to gay marriage is dying. It’s old people.” Democratic strategist and former Bill Clinton campaign manager James Carville agreed the 2012 election marked a “profound” shift on the controversial issue. On the table before the SCOTUS is a case challenging Proposition 8, the hot-button 2008 California ballot measure restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples. That measure passed, thus banning gay marriage in California; the state’s Supreme Court overturned the measure, however, declaring it unconstitutional. The Court will also hear a challenge to a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Currently, gay marriage is legal in just nine states and in the District of Columbia – but polls suggest support is growing, with a majority or close to it in support. A recent ABC News-Washington Post poll found 51 percent of Americans support gay marriage, while a recent Pew poll shows national support at 48 percent. That’s up from 35 percent in 2001. “To me, the consensus has already emerged,” said ABC News’ Matthew Dowd. “It’s just a question of … is the Supreme Court going to catch up and follow that wind of the pack, or get ahead of it or put a block in the path of it?” Same-sex marriage :   Support Oppose View Poll »
