Bob Costas: Gun Control Would’ve Saved Jovan Belcher

NBC Sports’ Bob Costas used his halftime segment during last night’s Eagles-Cowboys game to advocate for gun control following the murder-suicide of Jovan Belcher . The Kansas City Chiefs linebacker killed himself and girlfriend Kasandra Perkins , shocking the NFL world Saturday. Costas weighed in on the tragedy Sunday: Bob Costas Gun Control Rant In a segment about 90 seconds long, Costas began by mocking the sports cliche about how “this really puts it all in perspective,” then became even more pointed. He paraphrased and quoted extensively from a piece by Fox Sports’ Jason Whitlock: ”In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe.” “If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.” The online reaction to Costas’ segment was swift, with many people criticizing the longtime broadcaster for expressing his personal views on a program meant for entertainment. Others praised him for taking a strong stand on the controversial issue and for refusing to gloss over Jovan Belcher’s death with lip service and empty platitudes. Joe Jackson Suffers Stroke, Will Be Alright

Joe Jackson, the controversial patriarch of one of entertainment’s most famous families, suffered a stroke Thursday and is being treated in a Las Vegas hospital. He “is in very good spirits” and expects to be discharged today. The mild stroke is similar to two others he suffered in the past five years, another source close to the 83-year-old Jackson said, and he should recover fully. Joe Jackson created and managed the Jackson 5, the legendary R&B-pop group made up of his sons, including the late and iconic Michael Jackson. Although he is still married to Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson, they live separately. He has a home in Las Vegas, while his wife lives in Calabasas, Calif. Michael Jackson’s three children, Prince, Blanket and Paris Jackson , live with her. Despite his age, Jackson remains active in developing and promoting several businesses and products … sometimes pulling guns and causing drama here and there. Get well soon Joe.

Making It Rain On Them Hoes: Keija Minor Named First Ever Black Editor-In-Chief At Condé Nast

And to think that Condé Nast didn’t even employ African-Americans back in the day! Big steps were made when Keija Minor was named the Editor-in-Chief of Brides magazine. This makes her The First person of color to ever hold the title at a Condé Nast Publications mag. How’s that for slow progress?! In case you didn’t know, Condé Nast Publications is privately owned and produces 18 magazines including Vogue, Glamour, Vanity Fair and GQ. It’s been printing publications since 1909 and Thank God…it only took them 103 years to get a black Editor-In-Chief! We’re thankful Kieja (the former EIC at Uptown mag) didn’t get side-stepped in the decision to promote her at the magazine after the EIC spot was vacant this past month (her former boss, Anne Fulenwider, went over to be the new editor-in-chief of Marie Claire). This is great news but it’s taking a lot longer to get break down the walls in industries like this one. Brides is famous for their overwhelming white covers and we can only hope this move prompts other publications to have a more diverse POV. Images via Brides/Uptown
