‘Breaking Dawn’ Characters Wrestling With ‘Adult Concerns’

Director Bill Condon tells Comic-Con crowd that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s real-life growth parallels Bella and Edward. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit SAN DIEGO — Bill Condon was tasked with the difficult job of wrapping up the final two installments of “The Twilight Saga.” But judging by the glowing response to two brand-new “Breaking Dawn” clips at San Diego Comic-Con , so far it seems safe to bet he’s done a great job. But for the director, the task was as much about creating a finale that will please fans as it was making something that he could be proud of. During Thursday afternoon’s (July 21) “Breaking Dawn” panel in the Convention Center’s Hall H, Condon called the event “the most incredible test screening I will ever have,” because it was the first time he would be hearing fans’ reactions to part one of the last two “Twilight” movies. “It’s amazing in this movie how much happens,” Condon told the Comic-Con audience. “Bella’s getting married or Bella’s going to make love for the first time. People have been waiting for these moments, and everyone’s imagined them, so you do want to get to the essence of what people might want but you can only do it the way, ultimately, you think is the most beautiful or the most powerful.” “Twilight” fans’ possible reactions to a few scenes in particular have Condon feeling nervous, he admitted. “There are big scenes — the childbirth — that you just want to make sure that it’s as powerful and as complete as it could be,” he said. It helps that his two stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, have come into their own as actors over the course of the movies. Condon called Stewart “the real deal,” while revealing that Pattinson was able to bring “more of himself” to the role of Edward Cullen in “Breaking Dawn” then he had in the previous installments. “They’re growing up. There was a year gap between the making of this movie and the last one, [‘Eclipse’], so they’re just a lot more comfortable in themselves,” Condon explained. “I keep saying it’s like ‘Twilight Grows Up.’ It’s adult concerns: they’re married now, it’s like they’re going to have a kid, it’s that kind of stuff. You could see that it’s connecting more to what their lives were like now than if they were still playing high school kids, because they’re not high school kids anymore.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . AP Reporters Try to Breathe Life Into Moribund UN Cancun Climate Conference

I do hope that Associated Press reporters Arthur Max and Charles J. Hanley are finding some recreational time while they are reporting from Cancun about what's happening at the ” United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.” The pair's bosses ought to be asking them how much real attention they are paying to the festivities since they began. For example, as far as I can tell from two reports by Mr. Max ( here and here ), he seems to have missed the opening prayer to the pagan goddess Ixchel; Ken Shepherd at NewsBusters took note of it from thousands of miles away.

Daily Kos: Tea Parties Much Like Texans Who Cheered JFK’s Assassination in 1963

The Daily Kos could not let the anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination pass without making comparisons between the “far right” greeting JFK received in Dallas in 1963 and the greeting President Obama receives from the Tea Parties today. The blogger with the handle “Devtob” claimed some Texans cheered the death of Obama in the “nut country,” and presumes today's Texans would cheer Obama's death: Dallas was also the site, in 1961, of the National Indignation Convention, which Rick Perlstein relates to the tea partiers of today : Thousands of delegates from 90 cities packed a National Indignation Convention in Dallas, a 1961 version of today's tea parties; a keynote speaker turned to the master of ceremonies after his introduction and remarked as the audience roared: “Tom Anderson here has turned moderate! All he wants to do is impeach (Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl) Warren. I'm for hanging him!” read more

Grimault’s Asthmatic Cigarettes

ANTI-ASTHMA CIGARETTES: Because of our present day disgust for the tobacco industry, one is tempted to dismiss the idea of a medical (life saving) cigarette altogether. But that would be a mistake: Cannabis, in its smokable form, has been known to quickly stop full-scale asthma attacks. A medical fact that, while only scientifically proven in the late 20th Century, did not go unnoticed by 19th Century medical practitioners. To quote a major medical journal of its day: CIGARETTES OF CANNABIS INDICA. Medical Times and Gazette. Medical News; Oct 1870; 28, 334; “The cigarettes of Cannabis Indica, made by Gremault, of Paris, have been found most efficient in the treatment of affections of the organs of respiration and circulation, no less than in affections of the central and peripheral nervous system. The unpleasant effects which so often follow the internal and subcutaneous use of opium and of Cannabis Indica are not produced by the cigarette. There use is recommended (1) in spinal neuroses, and epilepsy; (2) in neurosis of the sensory nerves, neuralgia of the teeth, branches of the fifth pair, the sciatic nerves; (3) neuroses of the motor nerves, spasm of the throat air passages; (4) affections of the sympathetic nerves, hysteria, and other diseases not attended with plethora, and congestion of the head, heart, or lungs. They are especially useful in asthma, peruses, spasm of the stomach and intestinal canal, nervous palpitation of the heart, and exert a quieting influence over the whole nervous system.” INDIAN CIGARETTES by Grimault & Co.: This particular brand “Indian Cigarettes” [1] manufactured by the Grimault Corporation, is of special interest to us. This is due mainly to the fact that it seems to have been the ONLY established brand name of Cannabis Cigarettes offered for sale in this country. Also, remembering that medical marihuana cigarettes were quite legal back then, it is one of the most highly documented brand names available. According to the United Nations [Bulletin on Narcotics 1951],[2] Under the subtitle: “Preparations exempted from the control measures of the Narcotics Conventions: The following formula is given: Preparation # 5: Indian Cigarettes of Grimault (Dr. Ph. Chapelle) Government: Siam Notification: C.L.302.1930.III. Annex I Formula: # Belladonna leaves – 0.962 gm # Cannabis indica extract – 0.0005 gm. # Nitrate of potash – 0.033 gm Which brings up an interesting subject; Again, according to the United Nations [Bulletin on Narcotics 1962],[3] the following is stated: “Preparations made from extract or tincture of cannabis were not mentioned in the 1925 Convention, but in 1935 were brought within the control of the Convention by a decision of the Health Committee of the League of Nations under article 10 of the Convention. Such preparations are in some respects under a stricter control than the extract and tinctures themselves. Preparations made from the extract and tincture which are capable only of external use, and a medicinal cigarette called “Indian Cigarettes of Grimault” (Dr. P. H. Chapelle) are exempted from control.[ League of Nations document C.136.M.87. 1939. III ] Which brings up a good trivia question; Are these cigarettes, “Under InterNational Treaty Law,” still legal today? Hmmm! An interesting question, but one beyond the subject and interests of antique collectors. [1] With reference to Indians from India. God Hates Nerds

It seems that the members of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church aren't very happy about the San Diego Comic-Con. According to them, it's a gathering of lost souls who are obsessively worshipping false idols like Batman: Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry. Members of the church intend on staging a 45-minute protest during one of the least busy days of the convention in order to get everyone back on the right track. http://gizmodo.com/5588219/god-hates-nerds added by: pjacobs51

Mary J. Blige Gives Command Performance At Essence Music Festival

Singer whips crowd into frenzy with classics like ‘Real Love,’ ‘I’m Going Down,’ as Alicia Keys stumbles during near-flawless show. By Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige performs at the 2010 Essence Music Festival Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic The 16th annual Essence Music Festival ended in triumph in the early hours of Monday morning, as Earth Wind & Fire closed out the weekend with hits like “September” and “Reasons.” For several days, Essence magazine — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — and its 20-plus sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Olay and Ford, drove home messages of empowerment, self-esteem and self-awareness. By day, thousands hit New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where dozens of companies had set up booths and where acts like Keith Sweat and El DeBarge performed. Those passing through the convention center were also treated to good old celebrity sightings like T.I. and comedian/author Steve Harvey, who led relationship talks. At night, of course, it was all about the music at the Louisiana Superdome. Trey Songz, Estelle, Kid ‘N Play, Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Joe, Gladys Knight and Keri Hilson were among dozens of performers who opened both on the main stage and the smaller lounge stages. And the headliners were big guns: Janet Jackson kicked things off Friday, Saturday belonged to Alicia Keys and on Sunday night, though Earth Wind & Fire were last on the lineup, it was all about Mary. Mary J. Blige walked away with the performance of the weekend, showing a definitive command of the audience. The queen of hip-hop soul had the New Orleans crowd in a frenzy like a Reggie Bush touchdown, opening up her catalog and doling out cherished ditties such as “Real Love.” When Blige brought out Trey Songz to sing on “We Got Hood Love,” Trigger, of course, got another resounding ovation from the ladies. “Thank you for helping your big sister out,” Mary told Trey. “Sweet Thang” was huge, likely going over heavy because of its sing-along factor, and the audience was so enthralled on “I’m Going Down,” Mary only had to sing one line to tear the roof off the Dome. “Time on my hands, since you been away boy,” the female fans roared, taking over the reins of the record. “Sleep doesn’t come easy,” Mary soon joined in, but the hypnotized spectators kept singing the lyrics. After the record, Blige struck a b-girl pose with her fist balled almost all the way up and her thumb touching her chin. “Let me say this, the Mary J. Blige fans are in the building. I’m having a great time,” Mary said before complimenting the ladies on how good they were looking and how great they sounded. “We’ve reached that point in the night when we have to address some things,” she continued. The Queen then advised the women that some people will try to push them down, and that there’s only one way to handle those people: Tell them you’re trying to get up. “We will have no more drama,” she insisted, following up with “No More Drama.” “I may not be perfect for you, but I’m perfect for me,” Mary told the ladies. She also said she was cool with her imperfections. “It can only make me better to know I am imperfect. … It’s only one you baby. It’s only one you, original, baby.” The tempo soon changed up: “I wanna keep y’all hype right now. Keep y’all right,” she said. T.I. then came onstage for “Good Love” and the fans went crazy. Mary hugged Tip and he saluted the crowd. Blige’s set ended with her smashes “Family Affair” and “Be Without You.” The night before, the highlight on the bill was Alicia Keys, who was introduced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The five-months pregnant singer, who appeared to be standing on six-inch heels, slipped and fell onstage during “Love Is Blind,” but she never missed a beat (her vocals were nearly flawless) or a lyric. She got right back up and went to the piano and played. Keys’ set had several signature moments, including “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Fallin’.” And though she did show her skills on the piano for cuts like “Diary,” A.K. got up and danced on several selections, including “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready).” Related Photos Essence Music Festival Takes Over New Orleans Superdome Related Artists Mary J.
