Can Anyone Explain Why Atlanta Traffic Is So Bad?

More here:

Source: Aimin Tang / Getty As a young child growing up in Atlanta in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the knowledge of the traffic woes has always been prevalent. I can remember coming home from school and hearing the afternoon rush hour reports on the radio, hearing my parents make plans to go places around the traffic, or actually sitting in the traffic and observing the delays, horn honking and subtle road rage. I would often think and wonder to myself, “Just what is it that causes Atlanta to have the level of traffic that it does? Is it specific to “bad drivers”? Or is it specific to the growth of the city and suburbs around?” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Email Submit One could venture to expand on the thought of “bad drivers” as a major source of Atlanta’s traffic woes. During the morning and afternoon rush hour reports, we hear of car crashes that tie up or even shut down highways for extended amounts of time; which can be caused by careless drivers that are either attached to their mobile devices or in such a rush to get from Point A to Point B. As a result, instead of the ride home attempting to be a happy moment after a long day at work, it turns into the Atlanta Motor Speedway, which can have some damaging effects on those trying to get home and those involved. Source: Jeff Greenberg / Getty Another could venture to speak on the lack of highway infrastructure that Atlanta fails to have. 30 years ago, having the 7 major highways that we currently have would be feasible and necessary. After all, company headquarters and the entertainment industry had not quite set their sights on Atlanta. But within the last ten years, Atlanta has grown tremendously, while adopting the slogan and meme that is seen on social media, “We are FULL!” As a result, new residences are being built daily to accommodate the influx of transplant residents that have visited one time and want to make this their permanent home. While Atlanta is primarily affected, suburbs such as Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Snellville and even Conyers are feeling and reeling the effects of the traffic woes. The Latest Music, Celebrities and Interviews: Simply put, Atlanta has identified that traffic is a major, yet horrible thorn in our sides. There are many factors that add to this demise, but ultimately, there has to be a solid solution that can benefit the city as well as the residents and visitors. Sure, adding express and reverse lanes can lessen the blow, but does it really help? Is a person willing to pay rates just to get home faster, or save that money for another cause? After all, if everyone jumps on board with the express lanes, you create another traffic jam and there goes the idea of lighter traffic! Riding the transit buses, MARTA, carpooling, or even telecommuting doesn’t begin to scratch or solve the true issue; and that is that Atlanta needs to invest and establish more highways and roadways to offset and accommodate the growth that has started and will continue for years to come. Until the powers that be realize and understand, Atlanta will continue to experience highway headaches and woes that can simply be solved by upgrading and expanding the infrastructure that we currently have while continuing to make Atlanta an attractive place to live, visit and work. Why Is Atlanta Traffic So Bad? [Opinion]

View post:

Source: James Leynse / Getty Atlanta traffic is so bad because you moved here. I’ve lived in Atlanta my entire life (aside from my brief stint living in New Orleans for college), and growing up in the 80’s in my fair city was never task. Back then, every day in Atlanta was amazingly steady yet relaxingly slow-paced, and much that was due to a Pre-Olympics population that didn’t cause chaos and hours of backed up traffic. Fast forward to 2018, Atlanta has launched itself over time into a post-Olympics renaissance, replete with nuanced artistic neighborhoods, and a daily laundry list of film and TV shoots; however, amid our newly found fast-paced facade, an ugly shadow of traffic has casted itself over the “City in the Forest.” According to the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, which is the largest comparative study of its kind, Atlanta ranks number 8 on an international list of cities with horrible traffic, with Los Angeles, NYC, and San Francisco as the only US cities making it higher on the list (Los Angeles is number one). So do we blame the Olympics with having such a harsh traffic ranking, or perhaps it’s Atlanta’s infrastructure and poor planning that has gotten us in the current standstill situation? RELATED:  Do You Know More Than An Atlanta Native? [QUIZ] Metro Atlanta has grown to a populous of approximately 5.7 million people , and this new found increase has found itself to be a huge success for local businesses and our city’s tourist and visitors’ bureau. Consequently, with a constantly growing population, in a city as sprawled out as ours, everyone in the city limits has to own a vehicle of their own, and this is where the headache of traffic starts. Atlanta’s public transit system could take Atlantans where they need to go all over the city, if they could just stop trippin’ and expand their train lines to extend into outer lying counties, but unfortunately those counties are still blocking expansion to prevent “negative elements” from coming to their areas, even though people will come and go wherever they wish, regardless of train lines (sips tea). One of these days, the transit system will expand, however that time won’t happen in our near future, so the problem of traffic is still in our forefront. RELATED: What Kind of Food Is Atlanta Really Known For? [Opinion] Can we blame road expansions for our traffic woes? Since everyone is driving to their destination, our problems should be easily solved by expanding lanes on highways and roads around the metro area. However, Georgia’s various class, racial, and regional divisions seem to have made that very challenging for the Atlanta area, as methodologies reveal that Georgia is one of the bottom five states in terms of highway spending per capita. This lack of spending is largely due to voters disagreeing on key plans that could repair and better our roads, such as TSPLOST, where these plans go to referendum, and they are voted down by suburban communities that disapprove of expansions around their area. With the constant divide between in-towners and suburbanites, there is a possibility that a solution will never come to pass. RELATED:  Why Is Atlanta A Great Place To Live? Transgender Woman Stabbed To Death While Walking Across The Street In DC, One-Time Releases Video Person Of Interest [Video]

MPD has released video showing a person of interest in the stabbing death of a transgender woman earlier this week. The woman, identified as 23-year-old JaParker Jones a/k/a Deoni and Logan, of Northeast DC, was stabbed in the head on Thursday night at a NE bus stop and died Friday. The subject is crossing the middle of the intersection in this video below. He is seen crossing the street toward the top of the screen as he approaches the bus stop. He is described as a black male with medium complexion, 30-40 years of age, with a beard. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black jacket with a gray hooded sweatshirt underneath. METRO Transit Police tell 9NewsNow that the stabbing happened Thursday night in the 4900 block of East Capitol Street, at a bus stop. The victim apparently had an altercation with another individual, a black male in his forties, wearing a striped hat and a black coat. That suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the head. She fell to the ground. Passersby flagged down a passing Metro Transit Police officer who administered aid until ambulance workers took over and took the victim to Prince George’s County Hospital Center. It was not until she was on the operating table in grave condition that doctors determined that she was transgender. Earlier Thursday, Russell Brock-Smith was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attacking a transgender woman in broad daylight in Northwest Washington last summer. Police say the 26 year old tried to steal the victim’s purse but, when she refused to give up the purse, he pulled her hair, punched her in the head, and tried to pull her into a nearby alley. A jury convicted him of assault with intent to rob. Source More On Bossip! Grimault’s Asthmatic Cigarettes

ANTI-ASTHMA CIGARETTES: Because of our present day disgust for the tobacco industry, one is tempted to dismiss the idea of a medical (life saving) cigarette altogether. But that would be a mistake: Cannabis, in its smokable form, has been known to quickly stop full-scale asthma attacks. A medical fact that, while only scientifically proven in the late 20th Century, did not go unnoticed by 19th Century medical practitioners. To quote a major medical journal of its day: CIGARETTES OF CANNABIS INDICA. Medical Times and Gazette. Medical News; Oct 1870; 28, 334; “The cigarettes of Cannabis Indica, made by Gremault, of Paris, have been found most efficient in the treatment of affections of the organs of respiration and circulation, no less than in affections of the central and peripheral nervous system. The unpleasant effects which so often follow the internal and subcutaneous use of opium and of Cannabis Indica are not produced by the cigarette. There use is recommended (1) in spinal neuroses, and epilepsy; (2) in neurosis of the sensory nerves, neuralgia of the teeth, branches of the fifth pair, the sciatic nerves; (3) neuroses of the motor nerves, spasm of the throat air passages; (4) affections of the sympathetic nerves, hysteria, and other diseases not attended with plethora, and congestion of the head, heart, or lungs. They are especially useful in asthma, peruses, spasm of the stomach and intestinal canal, nervous palpitation of the heart, and exert a quieting influence over the whole nervous system.” INDIAN CIGARETTES by Grimault & Co.: This particular brand “Indian Cigarettes” [1] manufactured by the Grimault Corporation, is of special interest to us. This is due mainly to the fact that it seems to have been the ONLY established brand name of Cannabis Cigarettes offered for sale in this country. Also, remembering that medical marihuana cigarettes were quite legal back then, it is one of the most highly documented brand names available. According to the United Nations [Bulletin on Narcotics 1951],[2] Under the subtitle: “Preparations exempted from the control measures of the Narcotics Conventions: The following formula is given: Preparation # 5: Indian Cigarettes of Grimault (Dr. Ph. Chapelle) Government: Siam Notification: C.L.302.1930.III. Annex I Formula: # Belladonna leaves – 0.962 gm # Cannabis indica extract – 0.0005 gm. # Nitrate of potash – 0.033 gm Which brings up an interesting subject; Again, according to the United Nations [Bulletin on Narcotics 1962],[3] the following is stated: “Preparations made from extract or tincture of cannabis were not mentioned in the 1925 Convention, but in 1935 were brought within the control of the Convention by a decision of the Health Committee of the League of Nations under article 10 of the Convention. Such preparations are in some respects under a stricter control than the extract and tinctures themselves. Preparations made from the extract and tincture which are capable only of external use, and a medicinal cigarette called “Indian Cigarettes of Grimault” (Dr. P. H. Chapelle) are exempted from control.[ League of Nations document C.136.M.87. 1939. III ] Which brings up a good trivia question; Are these cigarettes, “Under InterNational Treaty Law,” still legal today? Hmmm! An interesting question, but one beyond the subject and interests of antique collectors. [1] With reference to Indians from India.
