Foo Fighters Remain ‘Badass’ Making Wasting Light, PJs And All

Band’s raw new album — recorded in Dave Grohl’s garage — is in stores now. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters Photo: MTV News By now, you probably know all about how the Foo Fighters’ decided to make their brand-new Wasting Light album, in stores Tuesday (April 12), but you might not know why. After all, it’s not every day that a globally famous rock band decides to ditch the comforts of the studio for a cramped garage and trade in computers for a reel-to-reel tape machine. But, as Foos frontman Dave Grohl explained to MTV News, that was precisely the reason they did it. After all, the Foo Fighters aren’t your average globally famous rock band. “There’s some sort of nobility in being that band that can sell out a stadium, and then you make your record in a garage — like, to me, that’s badass — and to tape,” he said. “Because I’m sure most people would go and get the newest stuff and work in the nicest studio and spend a trillion dollars and just, like, try to make these computer hits. I like that we’re a band that, when we play live, we don’t have, like, computers and stuff behind us making half of what you’re hearing. And you know what? Sometimes we suck. Sometimes it sounds like, ‘Oh, wow, that guy’s not singing in key,’ or, ‘Whoa, that guitar’s out of tune.’ And I like that, because to me, that’s rock and roll.” That rough-around-the-edges spirit can be felt coursing throughout much of Wasting Light, the Foos’ rawest album to date. From knotty first single “Rope” and the neck-snapping pace of “White Limo” to the aching “I Should Have Known,” it’s an album that lets everything bleed — much to the dismay of the team of engineers brought in to helm the production. “It was my idea to do it to tape, which nobody does it to tape anymore, everyone uses computers, and computers are rad and whatever, but tape, you have to actually play, and you have to be good. You can try to make it sound as good as it can, but at the end of the day, you get what you get on tape, that’s it,” Grohl said. “When I first brought it up, I said, ‘Hey, I want to do this to tape,’ and everybody was like, ‘Well, can you do that?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the way we used to do it,’ and Butch [Vig], the producer, he produced Nevermind, like, 20 years ago, and that was tape. … “But the first song we recorded, they were editing the tape, and as they wound it back, the tape just fell apart,” he continued. “And everyone was like, ‘Oh, we can’t use tape, we’ve got to go to computers.’ And I basically said, ‘If I see one computer in my house, you’re fired.’ Why go 99.9 percent of the way? If we’re going to do it, let’s go all the way.” Then again, Grohl will be the first to admit that, despite all the noble aspirations, there was another, deeply selfish reason he decided to record the album in his garage — one that had everything to do with his own comfort. “The making of this album was kind of the most fun we’ve ever had making a record, because it was so laid-back,” he smiled. “I wish every album was like this, where I didn’t even have to get out of my pajamas. Dude, it was in my house. … I liked doing it this way. Let’s leave it at that.” Will you check out the Foo Fighters’ latest? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Foo Fighters

Taylor Lautner Reveals ‘Itchy’ Jacob Wig In His #2 MTV Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News on Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News Long before Taylor Lautner became a household name, back in April 2008, he just was a teenager in a wig pretending to be a werewolf in a little movie called “Twilight.” As we learned at the time, the accessory took some getting used to for the then-16-year-old. With just a few days until the premiere of “MTV First: Taylor Lautner,” which debuts Wednesday on air and online at 7:56 p.m. ET, we’ve been counting down Lautner’s finest MTV moments — and at #2, we see him in his Jacob Black wig. “The wig is very interesting,” Lautner said when we caught up with him on the Portland, Oregon, set of “Twilight” back in ’08. “I’m definitely going to have to get used to it. It’s like halfway down my back.” He then went into specifics about how Jacob’s hair had to be styled. “I think they want it parted down the middle, so I’ll flip one side back and one side in front,” he explained. “They don’t want to do a ponytail because James, the evil vampire, is doing the ponytail. They want that contrast.” The “Abduction” star, who was sporting a super short ‘do at the time, told us he had to get used to the longer locks. “It gets kind of itchy at times, so I’m sure I will be putting it in a pony tail or something while I’m just waiting around,” Lautner laughed. “It’s very weird looking at myself in a mirror with the long hair, because my hair has never been longer than what it is now. I’ll have to get used to it, but I’m sure I will.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” this Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Taylor Lautner Talks ‘Twilight’ Tattoos In His #3 MTV Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News on Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News With so much talk about his abs at the VMAs and that one special moment he shared with Tom Cruise at the MTV Movie Awards, who could forget the time Taylor Lautner waxed poetic about “Twilight” tattoos? With just a few days until “MTV First: Taylor Lautner,” which premieres Wednesday on air and online at 7:56 p.m. ET, we’re counting down Lautner’s finest MTV moments — and at #3, the action stud recounted one particularly jarring fan encounter. “Usually, they don’t have something for you to sign, so they stick out their hand or their arm for you to sign, so I’m going down the line signing arms,” he said of an autograph session last summer. One of the arms came with a big surprise: “Then I get to an arm that has a gigantic wolf pack tattoo!” After feeling the tattoo to make sure it was real, he signed the fan’s arm, hoping that his signature wouldn’t also make the final cut as a permanent tat. “Sure enough, the very next day I get a call from a buddy saying, ‘Did you sign somebody’s arm? Because it’s tattooed to her now,’ ” he recalled. “I didn’t know whether to feel bad or whether it’s cool. It’s so different.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” this Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Taylor Lautner Compares His Abs To Robert Pattinson’s In His #4 Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News on Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News When Taylor Lautner hit the MTV VMAs back in September 2009, he turned up with a gift for his fans: an extended trailer for the second “Twilight” flick, “New Moon.” Although it seems like a lifetime ago, Twi-hards had yet to see Lautner transformed into a beefier Jacob Black. On the VMA red carpet, Lautner told MTV News that fans would probably have a visceral reaction to seeing him as a shirtless werewolf for the first time. Now, with just a few days until our special “MTV First: Taylor Lautner,” which premieres Wednesday, April 13, on air and online, we’re reliving that shirtless unveiling, our #4 favorite moment with the “Abduction” star.

Taylor Lautner Fist-Bumps Tom Cruise In His #5 MTV Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News this Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET. By MTV News staff Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV For a while, Taylor Lautner was pretending he wouldn’t be able to make it to the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. Of course, faithful members of Team Jacob know how that turned out: The “Twilight” star was on hand to present an exclusive “Eclipse” clip, take the stage to accept a Best Movie win for “New Moon” and take part in a ridiculous spoof with Robert Pattinson called “Bad-Ass Cops.” But in the run-up to the big show, Lautner had some fun, during an MTV promo, suggesting he might have other plans for his evening — plans that didn’t make Tom Cruise very happy. As we count down the days until “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” hits the air and the Web on Wednesday, April 13, at 7:56 p.m. — and count off our favorite encounters with the young star — we hauled the promo out of our archives because: A) It still makes us laugh, and B) It’s Taylor’s #5 MTV moment. In the promo, Cruise’s egomaniacal alter-ego, Les Grossman, finishes ripping “Avatar” director James Cameron a new one — “I want it in 4-D! Do it,” he screams — and turns to Lautner to discuss the upcoming Movie Awards. “Les, we already talked about this, remember?” Lautner tells him. “My agents told you that weekend is my best friend’s wedding.” “Understood. All cool,” Les says, and brings in a schlubby fella he says will stand in for Lautner at the wedding. Despite Taylor’s skepticism, Grossman says that everything’s going to work out, then offers up his fists for Tay-Tay to pound. Wiz Khalifa Explains Why Rolling Papers Has Few Collabos

‘I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity,’ Wiz tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa is riding high. The Pittsburgh rapper’s debut, Rolling Papers, sold 197,000 copies in its first week of release, enough to land the album at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. For Wiz, the success is made sweeter because although the album’s biggest hit so far is the Stargate-produced “Black and Yellow,” nearly half of the production on the record was provided by longtime Khalifa producers and collaborators I.D. Labs. “Other than making sure that my people that I came up with get filthy rich, I wanted to keep the sound consistent,” Wiz told MTV News about using his in-house team of beatmakers. “I wanted to really stick with what I know and build on that, other than getting in the position and completely switching. Take it to the next level was more what I had in mind.” Another familiar industry name made the album in spite of the fact that he, too, wasn’t in Wiz’s immediate circle. “We decided to add Too Short on ‘On My Level’ when we were deciding to do the video,” Wiz said of the first song he recorded for the album. “I wanted to do something bigger than just doing a video with me ’cause people were used to that at that time. So I was like, ‘Let’s just use our powers and holla at Too Short.’ “I’ve always been a big fan, ya know,” Wiz explained. “So when we did it, he knocked it straight out, which was a big deal for me. And then he was with getting in the video; that was really big for me too.” The only other featured rappers on Rolling Papers are Taylor Gang member Chevy Woods on “Star of the Show” and New Orleans MC Curren$y on “Rooftops.” Despite major co-signs from star MCs like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg, Wiz made a conscious decision to keep the album’s guest list to a minimum. “I trimmed it down and I just kept it regular because I wanted to save that suspense of me working with these other artists and making these huge records,” Wiz said. “I wanted to save that. I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity and that’s what I really wanted to do with this music and when that happens, I can do all that other stuff.” What’s your favorite Wiz collabo on Rolling Papers ?
