Quentin Tarantino helped lead the “Say Their Names’ rally on Saturday in NYC, where hundreds gathered to chant the names of 250 people of color killed by police violence . During the rally, a part of Dr. Cornel West’s 3-day #RiseUpOctober anti-police brutality initiative, the director individually detailed the senseless police killings of Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Antonio Guzmán López, and Michael Brown. Cornel West has a very civilized way of cursing people out Cornel West Rips Republicans Who Want To Cut Food Stamps Via RawStory Civil rights activist and Princeton University professor Cornel West laid out the case for the country’s continued income disparity to conservative pundit William Kristol on CNN’s Crossfire Monday night. “We black folk, we have been some of the most open-minded, forgiving and embracing people in the nation,” West told host S.E. Cupp. “We’ve got Clarence Thomases within our community. It’s not like we gotta go somewhere else to have conservatives. But the issue is this: Why are the Republicans cutting food stamps? That’s morally obscene and spiritually profane. Four million poor people may be pushed into poverty.” “How much have food stamps gone up in the last four years?” Kristol interjected. “They’ve doubled.” “They’ve gone up — you know why?” West countered. “Because this crisis of capitalism. Their wages have been stagnant.” “Who’s been president the past four years?” Kristol said with a smirk. “I thought the economy was roaring back under President Obama.” “This is where neo-liberalism goes hand-in hand with your neo-conservatism,” West argued. “Privatize, militarize, support big banks and big corporations. The result is what? Working-class devastated, middle-class downward mobility, escalation of poverty. So yes, you’re right: We’ve got a lot of food stamps increasing because of what? Peep how he handled it below: How do you respond to criticism that your administration hasn’t done enough to support black businesses? My general view has been consistent throughout, which is that I want all businesses to succeed. I want all Americans to have opportunity. I’m not the president of black America. I’m the president of the United States of America, but the programs that we have put in place have been directed at those folks who are least able to get financing through conventional means, who have been in the past locked out of opportunities that were available to everybody. So, I’ll put my track record up against anybody in terms of us putting in place broad-based programs that ultimately had a huge benefit for African American businesses. We think he handled the question well — any other answer might have opened the door for all kinds of bs from right wing conservatives. Of course it’s likely that known Obama haters like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West will jump all over this one — just cuz he wouldn’t rather be at a New Black Panther rally or something like they act like he should want to be. Officers from the Atlanta Police Department swarmed Woodruff Park at around 12:45 am this morning and arrested 53 Occupy Atlanta protesters. Occupy Atlanta had been in Woodruff Park since October 7. According to the AJC, Mayor Kasim Reed said more than 100 officers were involved in the operation to clear the park. The arrests were orderly and peaceful, but some of the protesters had to be dragged out. Occupy Atlanta released the following statement overnight: “The evidence shows that despite the fact that Mayor Reed claimed that he was sending clergy to speak with Occupy Atlanta in order to find a ‘peaceful solution,’ the outcome was already predetermined. Representatives from the group of clergy arrived at the park and requested a meeting for 5 p.m. That time was not available because of a planned march which was posted in the schedule on Occupy Atlanta’s website. Participants in Occupy Atlanta and the representatives of the group of clergy agreed on a meeting time of Thursday at noon at Big Bethel AME Church. However, Atlanta police did not wait for this meeting to take place.” The group aims to return to Woodruff Park but other options have also been explored. The 53 arrested protesters were taken to the Atlanta City Detention Center and charged with violating a city ordinance, a misdemeanor. Among those handcuffed were State Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta), former Atlanta city councilman Derrick Boazman and Joe Beasley, the southern regional director of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Read more here.
