Corey Haim’s Death: Did Medications Play A Role?

Police reportedly found Vicodin, Valium, muscle relaxers and antipsychotic medicines near body. By Gil Kaufman Corey Haim Photo: MTV News After Thursday’s news that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office told actor Corey Haim’s mother that his likely cause of death was pulmonary congestion , TMZ reported that strong medications that were found at the troubled “Lost Boys” star’s bedside. The Coroner’s office said Haim had pulmonary congestion, an enlarged heart and water in his lungs, but, according to TMZ that has not been definitively pinpointed as the cause of death in the 38-year-old actor’s demise on Wednesday. Though toxicology tests are still pending, the site said police also found pill bottles containing the powerful painkiller Vicodin, the tranquilizer Valium, an antipsychotic medication (Haloperidol) and Soma, a muscle relaxer, in the apartment Haim shared with his mother. The site reported that a well-known but unnamed Los Angeles psychiatrist prescribed all the medications to Haim on the same day, just days before he died. Haim publicly struggled with an addiction to drugs and alcohol for much of his career and prominent addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky told MTV News in the wake of the actor’s death that addicts sometimes are fooled into thinking that because they’re taking legal medications prescribed by a physician that they are not subject to the same abusive tendencies. “It’s so easy to get these medications, and sometimes well-meaning physicians who don’t understand addiction prescribe them for legitimate reasons,” said Pinsky, who did not treat Haim and did not have any first-hand knowledge of the circumstances of his death. “But they start taking them and don’t realize the trouble they’re getting into.” Shortly before his death, Haim had complained of flu-like symptoms and had spiked a high fever. He collapsed at his mother’s bedside early Wednesday morning and died a short time later. His manager, Marc Haislip, told Us Magazine that Haim will be buried in his native Canada in Toronto, Ontario, where he was born. Haim’s family, “want to do it back home,” he told the magazine. “But there will be a memorial in L.A.” No dates for either event have been announced yet, but it was reported that the family plans to reach out to friends in Hollywood for donations to fund the burial and service, as Haim was reportedly . Haim’s family, including sister Cari and father Bernie, have reportedly joined his mother Judy, who is very ill with cancer, in Los Angeles. Vicodin, Valium Found at Site of Corey Haim Death

Four pill bottles found in the apartment where Corey Haim died yesterday morning, medications that included the generic versions of both Vicodin and Valium. The same doctor prescribed all four drugs just days before Haim died. The drugs provided by a prominent L.A. psychiatrist were hydrocodone (Vicodin), diazepam (Valium), haloperidol (anti-psychotic) and Soma (muscle relaxant). The L.A. County Coroner’s Office would not comment, but sources say all were prescribed the same day , days before Haim died of an apparent drug overdose. No word on how many (if any) pills were missing from the bottles, which has become a topic of debate in the eerily similar Brittany Murphy death investigation. Corey Haim (1971-2010). Law enforcement sources say they believe Haim died from an accidental overdose of meds, though nothing is final until the Coroner’s toxicology reports are in. There have been reports that Haim, who fought a long battle with substance abuse, admitted in the past to taking as many as 85 Valium pills in a single day. Haim, a 38-year-old former child star, collapsed in his mother’s apartment and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead 2 1/2 hours later. The actor had been dating Daisy de la Hoya , a fellow reality star, in the week’s leading up to his passing. She is understandably quite broken up about it.

Corey Feldman Tells Larry King About Corey Haim’s Final Days

Feldman also reveals the pair’s plans to make two ‘License to Drive’ sequels on ‘Larry King Live.’ By Josh Wigler Corey Feldman on “Larry King Live” Wednesday Photo: CNN Actor Corey Feldman, 38, appeared Wednesday night (March 10) on CNN’s “Larry King Live” to discuss the death of his best friend and colleague Corey Haim , 38. Feldman, who co-starred with Haim in movies such as “The Lost Boys,” “License to Drive” and “Dream a Little Dream,” said he was “in shock” over the news of Haim’s passing and that he had seen the late actor as recently as “three or four days ago.” “He was fine,” Feldman said when asked about Haim’s appearance at the time of their last meeting. “He was actually giving me some advice about something I was very upset about. He was being very positive.” According to Feldman, reports that Haim died of a drug overdose are premature, citing other possible factors including kidney and heart failure, an inadvertent lethal mixture of prescribed drugs, or simply his body shutting down after years of drug abuse. “Until the coroner’s report comes out and until we get specific evidence and until we know exactly what the toxicology report says, nobody knows [how Haim died], and nobody is going to know,” Feldman said. “We are aware of the fact that Corey Haim has a long and detailed drug history and battled addiction for many, many years. I know it better than anybody, because I’ve been the guy stuffing charcoal down his throat when he was [overdosing]. I’ve been the guy trying to make him stand up or say a complete sentence. I’ve been through it with him many, many times, and it’s happened very badly and very intensely through the years.” While Feldman said he appreciated the outpouring of condolences from Haim’s many mourning fans, he was disappointed that the late actor’s support didn’t reveal itself sooner. “At the end of the day, where were all of these people the last 10 or 15 years of Corey’s life?” Feldman asked. “Where were all of these people to reach a hand out to him and say, ‘You’re a legend. You’re an amazingly talented and wonderful person.’ ” Feldman said mean-spirited remarks from tabloid magazines and Web sites such as TMZ were quite troubling not just for Haim, but also for himself. In light of Haim’s death, Feldman suggested that society needs “to grow up and think about every time we laugh at somebody in the tabloids, every time we poke a finger at somebody and say, ‘They’re a joke’ or ‘They’re fat’ or ‘They’re a drug addict’ or ‘They’re washed up’ or ‘They’re a loser,’ we need to look at ourselves and say, ‘Who am I?’ ” Haim had filmed several movies prior to his death, Feldman said, including a celebrated role in “American Sunset.” Feldman also revealed that before Haim’s death, the longtime collaborators “were negotiating a deal to do [their] first movie together in nine years.” Haim was apparently in the process of pitching a sequel to “License to Drive” called “License to Fly,” which would have been followed up with a third installment called “License to Dive.” There are currently no funeral plans for the late actor, Feldman said, though he hopes to arrange a memorial service where members of Hollywood would pay their respects to the actor, citing “Lucas” and other films as reasons to fondly remember Haim’s contributions to the industry. “Hopefully, he’s going to be remembered as a beautiful, funny, enigmatic character who brought nothing but life and light and entertainment and art to all of our lives,” Feldman said. Casey Johnson Autopsy Results Reveal Possible Nyquill Addiction, No Illegal Drug Use

Earlier this month, a Los Angeles coroner confirmed that Casey Johnson died of diabetes-related complications. He specifically cited an issue known as “diabetic ketoacidosis,” which is caused by a lack of insulin. Yesterday afternoon, meanwhile, the L.A. County Coroner’s Office released the official autopsy report for Johnson’s death and it revealed a few details related to the tragedy: Casey’s body was free from injury of any kind. Multiple medications found at the scene included Motrin, insulin and clonazepam. The report cites a “possible excess use of Nyquil.” No illegal drugs were found in Johnson’s system. Two sad notes related to the Johnson & Johnson family heiress: her death was preventable if she had taken better care of herself; and her body may have been found on January 4, but it lay in her home, undiscovered, for days.
