Simon Monjack’s Death Linked to ‘Broken-Heart’ Syndrome

Or so suggests a NY Times health blogger, springboarding off last week’s amateur diagnosis by Monjack’s mother (“He’s had heart problems and been in deep distress since Brittany [Murphy] died”) into research about “classic heart attack symptoms after suffering severe emotional stress.” Interesting reading; it’s a hormonal thing. evidently. Nevertheless, when the coroner publicly cites “a huge number of medicines by his bedside,” is it safe to assume that Monjack may have been broken-hearted because he was a little… careless ? Figure that one out, science. [ NYT ]

Brittany Murphy And Simon Monjack: A History Of Their Romance

Late actress and screenwriter, who married in 2007, died within five months of each other. By Gil Kaufman Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack Photo: Riccardo Savi/ WireImage On its surface, it was an unusual romance to say the least. The twice-engaged beautiful young actress with the sometimes-spotty filmography and the frumpy British B-movie director/screenwriter with a history of financial struggles who faced deportation just months before their wedding. Now, just over three years after the revelation of their secret April 2007 nuptials, Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack are dead , both having collapsed and passed away in the Hollywood home they shared with Murphy’s mother. Murphy — who died in December at age 32 from a combination of pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication &#8212 had a series of high-profile relationships with he likes of Ashton Kutcher and Fred Durst during her once-hot career. She was engaged to Jeff Kwatinetz, the Hollywood heavyweight producer/manager, for around five months in 2004. She then broke it off with him and got engaged in 2005 to a production assistant on her 2004 film, “Little Black Book,” Joe Macaluso. The pair ended their romance in August 2006. The actress once told tabloid magazine OK that she met Monjack when she was 17 and that the two had kept in touch over the years. “The easiest decision I ever made in my life was getting married,” she said. “He’s flown around the world to make sure we spend every single night together.” If the two kept in touch, it was a secret to most people in Hollywood, because even the tabloids were surprised when the pair tied the knot in a quiet Jewish ceremony in April 2007 after never really appearing in public together and not announcing their engagement. The small ceremony was reportedly attended by family members and wasn’t revealed until an Us Weekly reporter spotted the pair wearing wedding rings at the Kentucky Derby in early May 2007. E! Online speculated that the couple had gotten engaged at some point in the previous eight months, because before that, Murphy was still planning her wedding to Macaluso. The marriage was also shocking because Monjack, seven years older than Murphy, was practically unknown in the entertainment business and the press he had gotten was mostly unkind. Monjack was born in Hillingdon, England, on August 5, 1970. He was credited with writing, producing and directing the little-seen 2000 movie “Two Days, Nine Lives,” which starred “Hellboy II” actor Luke Goss as a movie producer who enters rehab after a drug-related crash. He also had a disputed co-writing credit on the Edie Sedgwick bio “Factory Girl.” He became most well-known for a pair of warrants issued in Virginia for alleged credit-card theft fraud that were later dropped, a nearly $500,000 judgment against him in 2006 following a lawsuit by a British investment firm and a nine-day jail stint in February 2007 by customs officials for overstaying his work visa. Even after their wedding, the couple was infrequently seen in public, and when news did emerge, it was typically unflattering, such as when Monjack allegedly showed up drunk and belligerent on the set of Murphy’s final film, 2009’s “The Caller.” Reports at the time said that Murphy was fired from the film after Monjack burst onto the set inebriated and disrupted shooting. A short time later, she was found dead in her home. Rumors swirled again when a distraught Monjack refused to allow the coroner’s office to do an autopsy on the actress.

Joe Jackson Fumes at Conrad Murray Defense, Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Doc

Michael Jackson’s father, Joe, is “horrified” at the prospect of Dr. Conrad Murray’s legal team arguing that Michael Jackson killed himself with a lethal dose of Propofol. The defense believes MJ woke up shortly before noon on the day he died, when Dr. Conrad Murray stepped out of the room, and decided to up his dosage. Big time. Murray’s lawyers are ready to argue that Michael’s addictive personality makes it more than feasible that he injected far too much Propofol and stopped his heart. But Joe Jackson ain’t buying it. “I don’t believe it. It’s not true,” he said, asserting that Murray covered up evidence. “Why would he [Dr. Murray] hide all the bottles if such a story were true. The Coroner’s report shows the story is not true. It really upsets me to hear this.” Joe Jackson never met a Michael Jackson CD lawsuit he didn’t like . While Murray’s story definitely seems a bit out there, one can never really trust the motives of Michael’s father, either. Sure, he’s probably upset Michael died. But any chance to make money, he pounces on! Joe has also fired a wrongful death lawsuit against Murray, claiming he needs a big payday his actions were “reckless” and “amount to second degree murder.” Joe Jackson’s lawyer, Brian Oxman, won’t go that far, but adds, “His [Dr. Murray’s] story is medically inconsistent with the autopsy findings … I would need to see the photographs of the scene in order to assess his story.” He’s been saying for some time that the involuntary manslaughter charge against Murray is not enough . Looks like Joe’s now taking things into his own hands.

‘I Spy’ Actor Robert Culp Dies

‘Greatest American Hero’ star was 79. By Josh Wigler Robert Culp Photo: Michael Tullberg/ Getty Images Robert Culp, star of television series “I Spy” and “The Greatest American Hero,” died after falling outside of his home in Hollywood on Wednesday (March 24). The Los Angeles Times reports that Culp, 79, fell and hit his head while out for a walk in his neighborhood. A jogger discovered Culp and alerted authorities. The actor was pronounced dead shortly after his 11 a.m. arrival at Queen of Angels hospital in Los Angeles. Lieutenant Bob Binder of the LAPD told The Times that Culp’s death was “accidental and there appears to be no sign of foul play.” An autopsy by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office is currently pending. Although Culp first attained public attention in the late 1950s as Texas Ranger Hoby Gilman on Western television series “Trackdown,” the actor’s big break came in 1965 when he landed the leading role of Kelly Robinson on “I Spy,” a TV series that ran for three seasons until 1968. The program focused on Culp’s character, an international tennis player, and his trainer, Alexander Scott (Bill Cosby). Both Robinson and Scott used their sports occupation as a cover story to disguise their real jobs working as secret agents for the United States government. The show achieved critical acclaim and both Culp and Cosby were nominated for three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Cosby won all three awards. In 1981, Culp delivered a co-starring turn as FBI Agent Bill Maxwell on “The Greatest American Hero,” an ABC television series starring William Katt as an average teacher who developed superpowers after a chance encounter with extraterrestrials. Maxwell is assigned as the teacher’s new partner. Recently, Culp held a recurring role on “Everybody Loves Raymond” as Warren Whelan, the father-in-law of Ray Romano’s character. On film, Culp was best known for playing Bob in “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,” a critically acclaimed 1969 comedy dealing with the notions of free love and open marriage. He appeared alongside fellow actors Elliott Gould, Natalie Wood and Dyan Cannon.

Corey Haim’s Funeral Draws Hundreds Of Friends, Family And Fans

A friend described the 45-minute service in Toronto as ‘very sad but with a lot of laughter.’ By Gil Kaufman Corey Haim Photo: MTV News Hundreds of friends and family packed the Thornhill memorial chapel in Toronto on Tuesday (March 16) for the funeral of actor Corey Haim , who died last week at age 38 of yet-undetermined causes. According to The Toronto Star, more than 200 people attended the ceremony, while more than a dozen fans of “The Lost Boys” star stood quietly on the chapel lawn outside to pay their respects. Maytal Kotler — a second cousin of Haim’s longtime friend and acting foil Corey Feldman who also appeared in the pair’s reality show, “The Two Coreys” — described the service as “very sad but with a lot of laughter.” The service was closed to the public. Among the speakers at the event were Haim’s best friend and an aunt and a cousin, according to CBC News . Following the 45-minute service, the long funeral procession left the chapel grounds escorted by seven police patrol cars. Due to Haim’s financial difficulties at the time of his death, his mother, Judy, had asked fans to pitch in to cover the costs of the funeral and burial. A note on Haim’s MySpace page posted over the weekend read, “It appears that we may now have raised enough money to cover all the expenses of Corey’s funeral! Many thanks to all who donated!” A celebrity memorabilia site that Haim sometimes sold items to, Startifacts, had also pledged to donate some funds to help defray the costs of the funeral. Though Feldman and Haim were close in life and shared the screen a number of times, Feldman said in a statement on Sunday that he would not be attending the funeral out of respect for the family’s wishes but will instead help plan a yet-unscheduled public memorial in Los Angeles. “In the days following my best friend Corey Haim’s death, I have spent much time with his mother Judy, who has always been like a mother to me,” Feldman said. “I would love nothing more than to be by her side at Corey’s funeral, however due to their strong religious beliefs, and need for privacy, the family has decided to make Corey’s funeral on Tuesday a small, private affair.” The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office has said Haim, who struggled for years with substance addiction , had an enlarged heart , pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs at the time of his death, though an official cause of death has been deferred pending toxicology tests. Corey Feldman Skipping Corey Haim Funeral Today, Planning Separate Memorial Within the Month

Corey Feldman will not be at Corey Haim’s funeral today out of respect for his best friend and fellow former child star’s family’s wishes, the actor said in a statement. “In the days following my best friend Corey Haim’s death, I have spent much time with his mother Judy, who has always been like a mother to me,” Feldman said. “Due to their strong religious beliefs and need for privacy,” he continued. “The family has decided to make Corey Haim’s funeral on Tuesday a small private affair.” The private funeral service will take place Tuesday in Toronto, and is funded Startifacts, a celebrity memorabilia Web site, which volunteered to donate $20,000. The money for the funeral will come from the auctioning off Haim’s belongings. His family asks fans to send flowers to a local cancer ward instead of the service. Corey Feldman will be MIA today, but says he will be planning a separate, public memorial for his Lost Boys co-star that will reportedly take place around April 2 . “I am working with a few people who were close to Corey to put a memorial together within the next month,” he said. “The media will be invited to honor and celebrate the legacy he left behind, along with friends, fans and the Hollywood community.” Corey Haim died Wednesday at the age of 38 of an apparent drug overdose while at his mother’s Los Angeles. He fought a long battle with substance abuse in life. Haim’s mom said he had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs at the time of his death, which has been linked to a massive drug ring . The L.A. County Coroner’s office is awaiting results of toxicology tests and has not ruled out a drug overdose, though it does not appear to be foul play or suicide.
