Parks & Recreation star Rob Lowe will portray a lawyer in the upcoming TV movie about last summer’s Casey Anthony trial, according to reports. Lowe, who previously played Drew Peterson in the Lifetime original film Drew Peterson: Untouchable has been cast as prosecutor Jeff Ashton. The movie, tentatively titled Prosecuting Casey Anthony , will be based on Ashton’s book about the case, Improper Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony . In a case that captivated the country, Anthony, 26, was charged with and later acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee in 2008. The not guilty verdict set off a firestorm of criticism (and head-scratching, or just plain outrage) across the U.S. Anthony has been in hiding since. She hasn’t won over many since last summer. In fact, the family that hid her after the verdict recently left this scathing voicemail for Casey Anthony . “We’re thrilled to have Rob returning to our network, after his amazing star turn as Drew Peterson,” Lifetime executive V.P. Rob Sharenow said. “He’s one of those rare stars who can do it all: comedy, drama, heroes, villains.” [Photos: WENN.com, CNN]
Sorry, Thor. You are no match for Katniss Everdeen. The Avengers – which is receiving glowing reviews from critics around the country – opened at midnight last night and brought in $18.7 million from those showings. Impressive? Yes, it’s the eighth best midnight tally of all-time. Record-breaking? No, it fell about a million short of The Hunger Games and the haul was a considerable amount lower than the midnight box office champion: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 somehow garnered $43.5 million! The Avengers Movie Trailer Have you seen The Avengers yet? Grade it if so:
“Tanning Mom” slash human raisin Patricia Krentcil has pleaded not guilty to felony child endangerment charges and claims the story of putting her little girl in a tanning booth is being victimized in what is all a giant misunderstanding. She also says her critics “jealous, fat, and ugly.” Speaking of the latter … The 44-year-old New Jersey (where else) resident was on her way to a salon (hair) when she unloaded on a photographer and proclaimed she is a “fabulous” mother. Needless to say, she is far from apologetic. About anything. Krentcil was arrested after a school nurse asked her five-year-old daughter Anna how she got a sunburn and she replied, “I go tanning with mommy.” She faces a felony count of second-degree child endangerment. Watch a news report about her below if you haven’t seen it: Patricia Krentcil Tanning Arrest
With child endangerment charges dropped against him, Gabriel Aubry was back in court this morning to take up another legal issue with ex-girlfriend Halle Berry: Child support for the former couple’s daughter, Nahla. Believing he needs a “proper environment” in which to care for the tyke, TMZ sources say Aubry is asking a judge to grant him $20,000 in child support payments. Per month. Apparently Aubry plans to raise Nahla in a castle. The case is complicated because Berry wants to move with Nahla to Paris in order to reside with fianc

After breaking up street fights and saving British journalists from oncoming New York taxicab s, it’s time for Ryan Gosling to take his hero act global. The actor has teamed with activist/author John Prendergast to further raise awareness of the ongoing human rights crisis in Congo, helping produce a series of videos documenting “amazing lives in a place the world has left for dead.” And perhaps the best part, according to Gosling and Prendergast? “[W]e’re not in it.” The actor and activist share the background today at Huffington Post : On our second trip together to Africa last Thanksgiving, we decided to go to the place where the deadliest war in the world was occurring: the Congo. The entire time we were there, we traveled with an extraordinary Congolese guy named Fidel Bafilemba. His video profile is the first in a new video series being launched by the Enough Project, called I Am Congo . Most of the stories we hear about Congo are of rape, conflict, and exploitation. Those stories are real and we saw plenty of evidence of them. But that’s not the whole story of Congo. Watching our friend Fidel’s video profile helps expand the story of Congo beyond its pain, and highlights what Congolese people all over are doing to create a better future for their country. Enjoy said video profile below, and check out more from I Am Congo here . [ Huffington Post ]
The Avengers (titled Avengers Assemble in the UK) exploded at the UK box office with £15.78 million — or roughly $25.6 million — over the weekend, including its Thursday preview screenings, giving the superhero film the winning spot among British releases. And coming in the heels of John Carter (which has yet to even break the £5m mark in Britain), Disney is wasting no time celebrating, calling the result the biggest superhero-movie opening of all time, The Guardian reports . By comparison, The Dark Knight debuted in Great Britain with £11.19m ($18.1m, including previews), while Spider-Man 3 kicked off with £11.83m ($19.1m, sans previews) in May 2007 and Iron Man 2 grabbed just £7.66m ($12.3m, including previews) back in April 2010. Meanwhile, Battleship , which launched April 11 in the UK, has dropped from first to sixth place, taking in the rough equivalent of $811,000 from 436 locations — a 61-percent decline from the previous weekend. Rounding out the British theatrical top five, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen took in £1.08m ($1.75m) from 417 sites, The Hunger Games followed with just over £744K ($1.2m) from 398 locations, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists landed at number four with nearly £664K ($1.07m) at 511 theaters, and The Cabin in the Woods closed the top five with almost £562K ($911K) at 383 locations. World Premiere Four – (Director/Writer Joshua Sanchez, Producer Christine Giorgio CAST Wendell Pierce, Emory Cohen, Aja Naomi King, EJ Bonilla) – Over the course of a steamy 4th of July night, a father and daughter, each trapped in loneliness, reach out for sexual connection — he with a self-hating teenage boy, she with a smooth-talking wannabe homeboy — in this psychologically complex, beautifully acted drama. North American Premiere Documentary Competition (with LAFF descriptions): 25 to Life – (Director Mike Brown, Producers Mike Brown, Yvonne Shirley) – William Brawner contracted the HIV virus through a blood transfusion as a toddler and kept it a secret as an adult while living a promiscuous, womanizing life. 25 years later, he comes clean, and this unflinching, sure-to-be-controversial documentary records his struggle for redemption. World Premiere A Band Called Death – (Directors Jeff Howlett, Mark Covino, Producers Matthew Perniciaro, Scott Mosier, Kevin Mann, Jerry Ferrara FEATURING David Hackney, Bobby Hackney, Sr., Dannis Hackney) – Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and inspiring family chronicle, this is the captivating and little known story of the Hackney brothers and their band Death, the best punk band the world almost never heard. This heartbreaking and stirring documentary takes us inside this life and death struggle for human rights.
