Courts’ Crucial Rulings Against Voter Suppression Come Just Ahead Of The Midterm Elections

Follow this link:

V oting rights advocates were dealt several huge victories on Friday when courts rejected blatant attempts at suppressing mostly people of color from being able to cast ballots on Election Day. The rulings mean that thousands of people who had previously been deemed ineligible voters will now be able to register and go to the polls on Tuesday. In one key ruling on an obvious case of gerrymandering — or redrawing municipal boundaries along racial and political lines in order to impact elections — the North Carolina General Court of Justice, Superior Court Division decided in an injunction that “four districts in the North Carolina House of Representatives (Districts 36, 37, 40 and 41) violate the prohibition in the North Carolina Constitution on mid-decade redistricting,” the NAACP wrote in a press release. The NAACP has launched a number of similar lawsuits across the country trying to prevent voter suppression from taking place. “This is an important victory for the NAACP as we fight to ensure that communities of color have a full opportunity to elect representatives who will protect their interests in state legislatures across the country” Bradford M. Berry, NAACP General Counsel, said. The NAACP also teamed up with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to win an injunction against voting technology that prevented 53,000 mostly African-American residents from registering to vote in Georgia. The ruling against the software, called Exact Match, “will directly affect about 3,100 applications,” the NAACP said. Also in Georgia, where Stacey Abrams was vying to become the nation’s first Black woman governor, a judge granted an injunction that could allow about 3,000 people previously denied voter registration over citizenship questions the ability to vote. The case was centered on new U.S. citizens. The case was a direct referendum on Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp , who, in a clear conflict of interest, was overseeing the election while he’s waging his own political campaign for governor against Abrams. BREAKING: We won! We have fully defeated Brian Kemp in our exact match lawsuit securing ALL relief we sought for voters. We’ll keep fighting to beat back voter suppression in #Midterms2018 . @LawyersComm pic.twitter.com/MZ7Kf1JZsc — Kristen Clarke 866-OUR-VOTE (@KristenClarkeJD) November 2, 2018 That ruling followed one on Tuesday  rejecting Kemp’s instructions to all local election officials to deny absentee ballots over signatures. Of course, there were still voter suppression efforts hard at play, even as the two rulings were handed down Friday. From the president’s new racist ad to voter intimidation tactics to the more than 50,000 people still fighting to register to vote in Georgia, there was still much work to be done for voting rights advocates. Friday’s rulings were a brief respite from that harsh reality. “From the time of Reconstruction and beforehand, opponents of a true democracy have attempted to silence and suppress Black political power, and each time we’ve stood strong and fought back – today is one of those times,” NAACP North Carolina State President Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman said in a statement. “We are committed to this fight of making democracy real for all of us and stand ready to do battle against those who seek to shrink this ideal.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Vote Suppressor Brian Kemp Runs Away From Second Debate Against Stacey Abrams [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3834782″ overlay=”true”]

90 Day Fiance Sneak Peek: Fernanda Struggles to Trust Jonathan

Pro-tip for anyone moving in with a new significant other: you probably want to not still be holding on to an ex's underwear. That has of course been an issue on 90 Day Fiance , when Fernanda found Jonathan's ex's thong in his home . In this sneak peek, we see that she's still trying to decide whether or not she can trust him, with the awkward help of his friend. So, Fernanda Flores had the misfortune of not only finding another woman's thong, but having that be almost her first experience in Jonathan Rivera's home. This brought underlying doubts about everything — the move, the engagement, and their 13-year age gap (she's 19, he's 32) — to the surface. As you can see in this video, one of Jonathan's friends was there to lend some emotional support. “It’s hard to talk with Jonathan’s friends about our problems,” Fernanda admits. “I feel, of course, more comfortable talking with my friends but I don’t have that option,” she explains. Fernanda is very aware that “If I told my friends and my family, they will be disappointed in Jonathan.” She realizes that she was nervous, and that finding Jonathan's ex's thong, which he'd forgotten in a drawer, seemed like her worst fears realized. “It was terrible,” Fernanda admits. At this point, speaking to Jonathan's (thus far unnamed) friend, she begins to cry. Jonathan's friend gives her a hug and a literal shoulder on which to cry. “When I came here,” Fernanda laments. “I’m so excited and it made me feel stupid.” They'd met while he was on vacation, but ultimately she didn't know much about him except what she had told him. It sounds really romantic, but it can lead to doubts. “I want to believe in him,” Fernanda explains. “But,” she admits. “You think the worst.” “Of course she had some concerns,” Jonathan's friend, who is both kind and no-nonsense. “If I had been in the country for the first time [and] I’m giving up everything to come here and marry someone,” his friend says. She continues: “and then the first day I get there I find a woman’s underwear, I would have lost it.” But, she says, it's not a sign that he's a cheater. “This is typical Jonathan,” she says. “No telling how long that’s been in there.” “He hasn’t thought about it,” she explains. “He’s just a boy and he’s dumb.” Jonathan's friend just explained at least one-third of all relationship problems. (Seriously, can we get her to show up on 90 Day Fiance for other couples? Can that be a thing?) It seems that the thong looked like a red flag, but also represented — as we mentioned — other concerns. Hopefully, this talk with Jonathan's friend (even if she's not exactly a neutral party) helped to allay Fernanda's fears. It may have been awkward for her, especially when the reality of “my friend is going to marry a teenager” set in. But everyone involved here is an adult. It looks like they met naturally and fell in love. Fair warning, folks, we have a bit of a 90 Day Fiance spoiler for you. If you find yourself rooting for Jonathan and Fernanda (I know that I have been), you're in luck. The two of them celebrated Halloween together this week. That's not usually something you do when you break up. And some reddit sleuths unearthed what appears to be evidence that these two got married back in May. Sometimes, people make it work.

‘Vote—Don’t Dishonor Your Family!’ Watch Oprah Campaign For Stacey Abrams In GA [Video]

Jessica McGowan/Getty Images Oprah Campaigns For Stacey Abrams In Georgia Oprah sent a strong message out to Georgians today; “Vote for Stacey Abrams!” The mogul was in Marietta, Georgia today to campaign for the candidate vying to become America’s first black female governor. While there she told attendees who came out in DROVES, that she was there on her volition after scouring for Stacey’s number. She also added that she wasn’t paid for the appearance. “I wasn’t asked, I just called Stacy up three days ago. Yes. I didn’t even know her. I am an independent woman. I have earned the right to do exactly what I want to do. I’ve earned the right to do what I want to do when I want to do it. I’ve earned the right to think for myself and vote for myself,” she added. “Nobody paid for me to come. Nobody even asked for me to come here. I paid for myself and I approved this message.” She also shunned people considering not voting and told a story about Otis Moss Sr. who walked 18 miles to vote in an election but was told he was too late to cast a ballot. He never got a chance to vote before he passed. “When I go to the polls and I cast my ballot, I cast it for a man I never knew. I cast it for Otis Moss Sr., who walked 18 miles one day just for the chance to vote,” said Oprah.” When I go to the polls, I cast the vote for my grandmother who died in 1963 before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and never had a chance to vote.” “For anybody here who has an ancestor who didn’t have the right to vote and you are choosing not to vote wherever you are in this state or this country, you are dishonoring your family,’ she said. “Honor your legacy and honor your right to citizenship in this, which is the greatest country in the world!” Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was also in attendance in support of Abrams. Magic happens when we use our voices to support leaders who share our values. It was an honor to join @Oprah in support of GA’s next governor, @StaceyAbrams ! Three HBCU graduates. Three women leaders. I don’t know how it gets more magical than this! #thelastweekend #Vote pic.twitter.com/tybReMYynd — Keisha Lance Bottoms (@KeishaBottoms) November 1, 2018 After the rally, Oprah went canvassing door to door. Trump Plans To Use An Executive Order To Suspend The 14th Amendment

R emember the days when Republicans worshiped the Constitution? Well, those days are over with as   President Trump said he will use an executive order to suspend the 14th Amendment. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction In an interview with Axios , Trump said, “We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits. It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.” Actually, this is not true. There are several countries that have birthright citizenship : Brazil, Jamaica, Argentina, Canada, among others. Trump continued: “It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t. You can definitely do it with an Act of Congress. But now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.” He added, “It’s in the process. It’ll happen with an executive order.” Trump also claimed he’s consulted with the White House counsel. The 14th Amendment has its roots in slavery. Adopted in 1868, it’s considered one of the Reconstruction Amendments and granted citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws to former slaves. In short, under the 14th Amendment, citizenship is awarded to children born in the U.S., or in U.S. territories, to parents who immigrated into the country. Some people were claiming Trump could not suspend the 14th Amendment and he is just trying to stir up his base for the midterm elections. But we should not doubt the hate of this man. What’s even scarier is that even if he decides to sign an “executive order,” there is no branch of government to stop him. Every branch of government is owned by the Republicans who faithfully and blindly defend him. SEE ALSO: All The Ways Cops Are Still Trying To Cover Up LaQuan McDonald’s Execution Outrageous! Travis Scott Speaks at Beto O’Rourke Rally: Watch!

Years ago, we would never have expected to say this, but … Kylie Jenner makes better relationship decisions than her sister Kim. Beto O'Rourke's campaign for Senate has attracted national attention, in part because he is looking to unseat Ted Cruz. As you'll see in the video we've included, Travis Scott returned to his hometown to support O'Rourke's campaign. On Sunday, October 28, Travis Scott appeared at the Bayland Park Community Center in his hometown of Houston, Texas. He was there to drum up support for Beto O'Rourke. “You just need to go out, hit these polls …” Travis encouraged the crowd while speaking with a microphone. “We need to just tell our peers, man,” he continued. “To like step out and vote.” Travis assured those who had gathered: “We can change the world.” Travis is from Houston. In fact, his family still lives there. Famously, he and Kylie were spotted in Houston after news of her pregnancy broke, as he introduced her to his family. Kylie's baby daddy was not the only celebrity who was there to promote O'Rourke. NFL player Arian Foster, another Houston native, was there to drum up support. O'Rourke tweeted a photo, writing: “Houston's @trvisXX and @ArianFoster! Big thanks to both” There is often a narrative that celebrity endorsements are a form of outside influence. (This is a narrative pushed by the political Right, whose celebrity endorsements tend to be rarer and much stranger) O'Rourke's campaign side-stepped this issue by being endorsed by Houston's native sons while in the city itself. A Texan, celebrity or not, supporting a candidate in Texas is the furthest thing from “outside influence.” If elected, O'Rourke will be part of the face that Texas shows to the world. Beto O'Rourke was instantly likeable to many because he is running against Ted Cruz. Dislike of Cruz is not a partisan issue — it is one thing that united Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. O'Rourke gained national attention when the GOP tweeted a photo of him from years ago when he was in a band. This was a huge misfire by political strategists, who hoped to show Beto as a young musician and not a serious politician. Instead, people around the country just noticed that O'Rourke was both cool and hot. That's O'Rourke on the left. People who have never set foot in Texas in their lives saw this photo had had sex dreams about him. But we have a sneaking suspicion that sex appeal is not why Travis Scott is endorsing the guy. Instead, Travis Scott wants a better country for himself and his family than the one that we currently inhabit. Violence, bigotry, and vitriol fill the news every week. This has to be particularly concerning to Travis because he is now the father of an almost-nine-month-old child. Travis wants a better future for Stormi. A couple of years ago, when Kylie was dating Tyga, we would never have imagined that we'd be praising her partner. Instead, look at Kim's marriage to a MAGA-hat-wearing impulsive man-child who won't listen to anyone. Kanye is embarrassing his loved ones with his antics. Even Caitlyn Jenner admits that Trump sucks . Travis Scott seems to have a good head on his shoulders and to be a good person. Sometimes, people find it difficult to feel optimistic about midterm elections. The answer is to vote, whether you feel enthusiastic about it or not. Do your part to make the world a better place.

Journalist Kimberly Holmes Wiggins Turns Her Pain Into Power After Losing Her Husband

W hen Kimberly Holmes Wiggins met her husband Rasheed at Duke University years ago, she knew she had found her soulmate. She was drawn to his sensitive, caring, and unique soul. After the two attended a wedding where her sorority sister and his fraternity brother joined together in matrimony, Kimberly and Rasheed embarked on their own love journey and began dating. While maintaining a long-distance relationship while Kimberly furthered her journalism career in Washington, D.C. and Rasheed lived in North Carolina, the two established an unbreakable bond and tied the knot in 2011. Sadly, things took a tragic turn for the couple on a Spring evening in 2016. While returning from a quick store run, Rasheed lost his life after being struck by three cars at the intersection of Universal Boulevard and Destination Parkway, not too far from the couple’s Florida apartment. The first two drivers left the scene and are still at large. The third driver—who was driving a taxi—was the only one who stopped to help Wiggins. Kimberly became concerned when she couldn’t reach Rasheed and went out with their dog to go search for him only to come across a crime scene where her husband lay in the middle of the road. In just a short period of time, she found herself in the midst of a homicide investigation on an evening that was supposed to be a movie night for her and her husband. Her life was forever changed. “Every time we would leave each other we would kiss and hug goodbye but that night we didn’t because he was supposed to come right back. When you lose someone, who plays a significant role in your life it’s hard,” Kimberly told NewsOne as she recounted what happened that night. “The real pain sets in weeks, months, and years after that. Grief never goes away, and you just learn how to live with it. One thing that is really difficult when losing a spouse is that you lose the person who treated you special.” Mourning the loss of the love of her life has been an uphill battle for Kimberly, but she has decided to turn her pain into power and has led several efforts to create positive transformation in her life as well as the lives of others. In 2017, she launched the Rasheed A. Wiggins Entrepreneurial Prize at her and her husband’s alma mater Duke University. Rasheed who was a seasoned marketing professional was the co-founder of a digital advertising agency called AdRelief. Inspired by Rasheed’s entrepreneurial spirit, Kimberly and others who were close to Rasheed believed that the scholarship fund would keep his legacy alive by giving budding business owners the funds to launch their own ventures. The 2017 winner was a company called Flower Child Remedies which is a Black-owned natural hair product line. The winner of the 2018 prize has yet to be announced. Kimberly has also stepped into the realm of policy change and is fighting for a bill to be passed in Florida related to hit-and-runs. According to a study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Florida is one of the top three states with the highest rates of fatal hit-and-run crashes. Under the bill, there would be an amber alert system put in place for hit-and-runs where people would be alerted about cars that left the scene. She also has launched a grief outreach organization called Still His where she provides support and sends gift boxes to widows across the country in an effort to help them heal. She also hosts several support brunches and dinners in the DMV area to cultivate a community of women who are struggling with the loss of their spouses and penned a book about how to cope with grief and support those who are grieving. Kimberly’s latest project is a 5K run in honor of Rasheed that is slated to take place on March 23; a day before what would have been his 42nd birthday. She’s thankful that she can use her platform to help those in need, especially women of color who lack resources when it comes to seeking help after experiencing loss. “It’s hard to come from a community that tells you to keep things bottled up. But we must confront our emotions to heal. I’m appreciative of being able to use my voice,” she said. “This was one of the most eye-opening experiences for me. When getting involved with these initiatives it was about putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward. I feel incredibly blessed because I was surrounded by so much love.” SEE ALSO: Rihanna And Colin Kaepernick To Reportedly Team Up For Social Justice Project Marshawn Lynch Launches Initiative To Provide The Homeless With Smartphones [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3832050″ overlay=”true”]

Megyn Kelly Criticized By Hometown Students Who Once Admired Her

More:

T he backlash became more personal for  Megyn Kelly  as current students from Kelly’s high school rejected her controversial statement that blackface was acceptable when she was growing up in Bethlehem, New York. SEE ALSO: From Trayvon Martin To Blackface: Megyn Kelly’s Most Racist Moments A group of students at Bethlehem Central High School, where the former NBC host graduated in 1988, said none of their parents could recall a time back in the 1980s when blackface was considered not racist, the Students for Peace and Survival at Bethlehem Central High School stated Sunday in an NBC News op-ed. Kelly is an admired figure at her alma mater, where she was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 2015 . NBC confirmed on Friday that it booted Kelly from her morning show. The firing was prompted by her panel discussion on Tuesday in which she defended wearing blackface for Halloween. “You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween, or a Black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was OK just as long as you were dressing as a character,” she stated. A huge backlash prompted Kelly to apologize, but it wasn’t enough given her history of making racist comments , particularly as a Fox News host before joining NBC. “We know full well that one of the hardest things to do is to apologize, and we thank her for doing so,” the students said. “But retroactively showing sensitivity isn’t nearly enough to prevent the cycle from continuing.” Megyn Kelly clearly won’t be missed at NBC. #MegynKellyCanceledParty https://t.co/mQn6RcYPIr — NewsOne (@newsone) October 25, 2018 Bethlehem is far from a racially diverse town, the students noted. It was 92 percent white and just 2.5 percent African-American, according the 2010 census. Minstrel shows were part of the city’s “sordid tradition” of humor at the expense of Black people. The local newspaper recorded that a minstrel show was performed for a school fundraiser in 1960, more than a decade before Kelly was born. “The reason that Megyn’s comments about blackface being OK when she was a kid … were so offensive is that blackface is a projection of the racism that lies much deeper, and a symbol of times that are not quite as far past as we may wish to admit,” the students commented. Entrepreneur Helps Black Women Get Access To Venture Capital

See the article here:

A lthough Black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the country, they still run into many obstacles when seeking capital for their business ventures. Entrepreneur Shelly Bell is looking to change that through her company Black Girl Ventures, Forbes reported. She leads two printing companies one of which has an all-woman team of designers and printers who develop products for major tech companies. Her other venture—dubbed Made by a Black Woman—is an e-commerce digital platform that features products created by women of color. Inspired to take her mission of empowering Black women further, she launched Black Girl Ventures in 2016 as an avenue to align Black businesswomen with opportunities to secure capital. Through her business, she provides an array of different services that are all designed to help women elevate their businesses. She hosts networking events, boot camps, and pitch competitions where winners receive funds from the admission fees and land meetings with investors. In the future, she hopes to help Latinx women as well. “We realized on top of access to capital, Black and Brown women also want access to new networks,” Bell told Forbes. “In my opinion social capital is the move. Even if you get access to capital, if you don’t have the network or team or people around you to help you manage it or give you ideas on how to grow or scale, you can only get to a certain point.” Bell—who is a part of the LGBTQIA community—believes that there is power in inclusivity and wants BGV to be a safe space for people from all walks of life. Ever since BGV launched two years ago, she has helped 13 entrepreneurs fund their businesses and hopes to help many others bring their dreams to fruition.
