Black America ‘Did The Thing’ With High Voter Turnout On Election Day

See the original post here:

S prinkled among the millions of people in Georgia who were forced to wait as long as four hours just to cast their ballots were devoted African-American voters, many of whom couldn’t afford to take off that much time from work. But the chance at helping to make history by electing Stacey Abrams as the country’s first Black woman governor was something they just couldn’t pass up. In the face of numerous obstacles from the big bag of racist tricks intended to suppress the Black vote, the display of perseverance was impressive,  LaTosha Brown , a co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, told NewsOne this week. See Also : ‘Dirty Tricks’: Stacey Abrams Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines “I am very, very proud of Black people. Black folks did the thing,” said Brown who spent Election Day in Georgia helping to monitor and address voter suppression efforts. Brown glowingly recalled how African-American voters came out in droves to elect dozens of candidates who looked like them and to vote for tangible change across the country, but especially in places such as Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. “The turnout, the energy, the way I saw Black people working on the ground — listen, we did our part,” she added. Just finished canvassing in west Atlanta with Killer Mike. @BlackVotersMtr pic.twitter.com/DiZgQWrCWd — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) November 6, 2018 Early figures supported Brown’s turnout observations. Across the country, overall turnout was at a 50-year high , according to NPR. More than 47 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot. Exit poll figures also showed that, indeed, African-Americans turned out in significant numbers. Black voters accounted for about 12 percent of the overall turnout—comparable to the previous midterm high of 13 percent in 2014, ABC News reported. Although several Black candidates made history, including Lucy McBath , Ayanna Pressley and Jahana Hayes , two of the biggest prizes have so far eluded Black voters. Andrew Gillum , who was competing to become Florida’s first Black governor, failed to win his race , while Abrams in Georgia was pushing for a recount or runoff election after a close race riddled with voter suppression. “Don’t write us off. We ain’t out the game yet,” Brown stated with deep conviction, adding that those two races were still major victories in Southern states stained by a blood-soaked history of white supremacy. Georgia! It ain’t OVER! We still need all hands on deck. We need folks to show up and demand Kemp count every vote. Show up this morning at 10:00am at the state capitol room #203. We can’t let them steal this one! https://t.co/3OPihD5cBd pic.twitter.com/5ULv1TK3Dr — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) November 8, 2018 Brown also counted the passage of two key amendments — one each in Florida and Nashville — among the key victories for African-Americans. “They were some key critical wins that Black voters absolutely played a significant role,” Brown said. Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to 1.4 million ex-felons across Florida. Under the state’s felon voting ban, approximately 21.5 percent of African Americans couldn’t vote before Tuesday. In Nashville, Amendment 1 created a new citizen-led panel to hold the police accountable. Voters overwhelmingly passed the amendment after “a decades-long push from Black leaders in the city,” the Tennessean reported. Those successes didn’t come easy because of widespread voter suppression efforts against the Black people. From her vantage point at ground zero, Brown witnessed many of the suppression attempts in real-time. At a polling station that normally has 30 voting machines, there were just 15, she recalled. There were places that didn’t have power cords for voting machines and others where aging voting equipment was inoperable. Brown said numerous Black voters told her they pressed Abrams’ name before their machines instead selected the name of her Republican opponent,  Brian Kemp , who was overseeing the election as secretary of state. “I’m from Alabama where they are experts at voter suppression and intimidation strategies,” Brown said. “I’ve never seen anything like I witnessed in Georgia.” As a voting rights activist, she has demanded from officials to know why n 2018 Black people were still being mistreated at the polls and required to overcome voting rights obstacles in a nation supposed to be a democracy. “Where is the support from the freaking government, so that our votes are fucking counted?” she demanded. “Why is it a struggle for us to cast our damn vote?” SEE ALSO: Judge Rejects Brian Kemp’s Georgia Absentee Ballot Suppression Attempt Stacey Abrams Campaign Speaks Out On Trifling Brian Kemp Trying To Claim He Won Georgia [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835568″ overlay=”true”]

Kim Kardashian Promotes Perfume in Wake of Mass Shooting, Hears All About It

Kim Kardashian stands accused of caring more about her brand and her bank account than about the lives of 12 dead people in California. This is a very harsh asssessment, but it’s one shared by a number of Kim’s Twitter followers right now. The reality star has garnered quite a bit of backlash for what some perceive as an incredibly tone deaf Tweet on Thursday morning. It reads as follows: So excited! @KKWFRAGRANCE is coming to @ultabeauty this holiday season! My fragrances launch in all stores across the country on Sunday 11/25! And then another almost immediately proceeded it: Get ready! #KKWFRAGRANCE is coming to all @ultabeauty stores on Sunday 11.25! #KKWFragranceUltaBeauty. On the surface, this is exactly what any follower of Kardashian would expect: a promotion of her makeup, beauty or perfume collection. But the self-serving messages came just hours after the world learned of another mass shooting, as a dozen people were gunned down in a bar in Thousand Oaks around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday. As you might expect, many social media users responded to Kim’s fragrance shilling by asking what the heck the mother of three was thinking by sending them in light of this tragedy. Here’s a look at some of the most pointed responded to Kardashian’s Tweets: 12 people are dead this morning Kim…and it happened a city over from your home. Get it together. I would be much more interested with the developing facts behind a mass murder in Thousand Oaks, CA, that went down late last night Kim! But you really blew this one big time! Massively! Kris Jenner needs have a heart to heart with you! Mass shooting right in ur state & as ALWAYS none of ur fam say shhh, WHY would any of you? U all have armed guards 24/7 on you, F the rest of us right? Don’t preach to me on gun control HYPOCRITE, MAKE UR MONEY #ThousandOaks You are aware that there was a mass shooting one town over, right? The thing is, Kim was likely unaware of this horrific massacre at the time the Tweets went live. Based on the similarity of the messages, as well as how they were posted back-to-back, they were almost definitely scheduled to go up when they did, at some point before the aforecited bar patrons were killed. And Kardashian has actually been a vocal proponent of gun control in the past. In February, following a mass shooting in Florida, Kim earned our praise for responding as follows online: “We owe it to our children and our teachers to keep them safe while at school. Prayers won’t do this: action will. Congress, please do your job and protect Americans from senseless gun violence.” So this is one important topic on which the star has been admirably vocal. Still, the unfortunate timing of Kim’s Tweets here coincide with Kardashian having to recently apologize for using the R-Word in video. She may be best served by explaining the situation and issuing a statement about the shooting and gun control in general, simply to avoid another scandal. Not that what folks think about Kim Kardashian is remotely the point right now. What politicians think about the state of our country and the role guns play in it is infinitely more pressing. Former National Teacher Of The Year Jahana Hayes Becomes First Black Woman Elected To Congress In Connecticut

You also believe that we have an obligation to be of service to someone else, … that true leaders lead from the front and lead by example, and reject all of this hate and intolerance and this indescribable fear that does not define who we are.” With the election, Hayes added to a number of historic results for a large group of African-American candidates running in the midterm elections across the country. The former national teacher of the year was still teaching full-time in the months leading up to Election Day. What will soon be her former profession has really helped inform the way she approaches politics, she told the Hartford Courant recently. “When you’re a teacher, you don’t pick and choose who you advocate for. You don’t choose who comes to your class. You don’t ask kids, ‘Is your mom a Republican or a Democrat,’ because that’s how I’m gonna decide how hard I’m gonna work for you,” Hayes said . “They come to you and you have a responsibility to leave them better than when they came. I think that’s what government should be doing.” Not unlike other Black women running for key state-wide elected seats, Hayes encountered her fair share of resistance from Democratic Party insiders who initially favored other candidates. Because of some creative maneuvering by the Connecticut state Democrats, Hayes didn’t get the party’s nomination. Still, she won the primary in August and forced Democrats to support her as the party’s nominee. That phenomenon was similar to those we saw for other Black women who were still able to win their respective primaries with little or no help from Democrats. Hayes explained why she was running for Congress when she declared in July. “Who will speak for them?” Hayes recalled asking herself one day while looking at her students. Thanks to the voters of Connecticut, that question has been answered, and then some. Keep Hope Alive! Jesse Jackson Personally Escorts 5 New Voting Machines Into Georgia Polling Place

W ith such widespread reports of failing voting machines across the country, it took a civil rights icon to steward what could become an iconic civil rights moment during the highly consequential midterm elections on Tuesday. As voting suppression was seemingly being realized in real-time, a video posted to social media showed two men bringing five voting machines into a polling place in Georgia, with the Rev. Jesse Jackson bringing up the rear, looking like he was overseeing the entire process. People could be seen standing around (read: not voting) in the Pittman Park Recreation Center in South Atlanta before the new machines were brought in to a welcoming round of applause that may as well have doubled as a collective sigh of relief. It could become a defining moment in the fight against the very real voter suppression efforts Georgians have seen in the weeks ahead of Election Day. Supporting those voters who have waited in line for 4 hours due to only having 3 voting machines. pic.twitter.com/ax2Ba8mQFV — Kathleen Quillian (@QuillianK) November 6, 2018 With such anticipation surrounding the election, it was up to the officials overseeing the election to plan ahead for what was expected to be a high voter turnout. So it was no wonder that the Republican candidate running for governor, Brian Kemp , also happened to be Georgia’s secretary of state. His opponent, Stacey Abrams , could become the first African-American woman in U.S. history to be governor. While voters were reportedly experiencing the entire gamut of issues at the polls — voter intimidation, voter suppression, poll worker apathy, and more — it seemed to be more pronounced in Georgia. In many instances, the issues were resolved quickly, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . Election officials provided spare voting machines. But, then, that still begs the question why all of the voting machines were not made available to voters in the first place, what with all of the complaints about lines that routinely come with elections. Teresa Giudice: My Husband Getting Deported Just Sucks!

Teresa Giudice talked more candidly than ever before today about the very unusual and unfortunate situation affecting her family. Appearing as a guest on Good Morning America, the Real Housewives of New Jersey mainstay discussed her husband’s deportation at length. (It really is true: Joe Giudice will be deported back to Italy after he’s released from prison in 2019 because he committed a felony and he never became a U.S. citizen, despite moving here for good as a child.) Teresa described the sentencing, which a judge handed down last month, as “heartbreaking” during her spot on GMA. She then elaborated as follows: “Very sad. The girls are really upset. You know, it’s hard for them … Adults can handle anything. It’s hard for children to go through this. They’re asking themselves, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ “Like, ‘I want my daddy to come home.'” Teresa and Joe are parents to a quartet of daughters: Gia, 17, Gabriella, 14, Milania, 12, and Audriana, 9. Both Gia and Milania have made public pleas for the deportation ruling to be overturned, with the former writing on Instagram : “My father is no threat to society. He is one of the most warm hearted people I know. “My father did his time. And learned from his mistakes. Isn’t being in there supposed to make you realize your mistakes so you can become a better person?” Teresa, meanwhile, says she’s been getting support herself from Gia, saying on Good Morning America: “I tell her every day she’s like the rock of her sisters. She’s helping me, you know, explain things to them – because my third daughter is having a really hard time with this.” In 2014, Teresa and Joe each pleaded guilty to 41 counts of fraud, including mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud. Moreover, Joe admitted that he did not pay approximately $200,000 in taxes. It totally sucks that four young girls will be living far apart from their father, but it’s hard to have too much sympathy for rich people who break the law and try to game the system. Teresa served 11 months behind bars in 2015; Joe’s 41-month sentence started the following year. Then, on October 10, a judge found the restaurateur “deportable and ineligible for any kind of relief,” ordering him to leave the United States when his sentence concludes in March. Giudice has said she will remain by Joe’s side even when he leaves the country, but various insiders have said otherwise. They predict a divorce. “I never thought I would be in this position,” Teresa said on GMA, adding: “We’ve been through a lot. I’ve gone through ups and downs, like being angry – but listen, I have to stay strong. “I have four beautiful daughters that, you know, they need their mommy.” View Slideshow: Teresa Giudice: Filing For Divorce Once Joe Gets Deported?! What’s the plan moving forward? Where will Teresa go from here? “Just take it one day at a time,” she concluded this morning. “That’s it.”

Halsey Pussy Print of the Day

I made a post about how everything is the fucking same yesterday or the other day..saying that all the shitty low quality pop music that kids are into fucking sucks…and all the content that people produce is all the fucking same…laziness and zero creativity….that it would be the equivalent of every singer singing the same song, to the same musical track, same lyrics the same way…it’s boring…. Only Halsey, the half black party girl who pretends she had such a hard life because she was poor and doing drugs, is both… She makes the shitty music I used as a metaphor, and she posts the shitty selfies showing off her body, that would normally be reserved for a dude she’s fucking, who I guess is now off fucking some hotter model…for the world, or her fans to see…. It’s just a weird dynamic really…there’s something nice about not seeing every girl in the world shoving her bathing suit or panties up her cunt, cropping out her face to keep it mysterious, because her face is mangled and not made up, but her body looks banging cuz she just took a shit….and feels thin… I kind of prefer not seeing ever girl shoving panties in her cunt…so that when it happens it’s really a “FUCK DID YOU SEE THAT PIC”…now it’s just not even worth talking about… Keep up the hard and expensive big budget content Produxtion you lazy twat…can’t even eat the bikini bottoms right. Sophie Mudd Titty Photoshoot of the Day

Hey big boy – I love your titties….is something that I hate hearing but that I hear all the time….so I can relate to Sophie Mudd, a girl who has a weirdly shaped body because the shoulders are broad to hold the tits, the hips are narrow…and that may eventually end up a fat walmart clerk looking bitch…but for now is skinny and maintaining being skinny…cuz with tits like that it is so important to have that level of contrast… I have been objectified, teased and singled out for having these mad tits…bullied for my tits…cuz men are pervert and mean….so #metoo and #believeallwomen even though they lie…as a fat man I have fought your fight…and dealt with the abuse you feel… Only I can’t go out there and reclaim my tits, and expose my tits, and show off my tits, so that everyone follows me on instagram and that I can monetize on instagram…because the whole world is on instagram and thinks that’s all that matters in the world…that there is nothing outside of instagram… Because my big tits aren’t hot big tits, they are fat man big tits, but I like to try to find common ground to relate on the real issues the country is facing – like how are Sophie Mudd’s tits so fucking big… All this to say…big fucking tits…what hormones are being put into the foods to make this genetic mutation…hopefully all the girls are eating it. The future looks bright I mean other than the whole it’s going to blow the fuck up….but at least the tits will be big on girls trying to get their rent paid…staying skinny…as the meteor strikes and we are flooded out… JOIN THE NEWSLETTER YOU ASSHOLES! Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate

I t’s been nine years since retired NBA star Jalen Rose opened the doors to a charter school that he created in Detroit and his effort to further education in the area has proven to be a success. According to Ebony , Rose’s school has a 93 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Jalen Rose says In June, it will be the first time JRLA scholars that graduated from colleges across the country will have the opportunity to attend our graduation and speak to the graduates of our senior class. https://t.co/iWCaQoxBwN — EBONY MAGAZINE (@EBONYMag) October 28, 2018 The school—which is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy—was created for youth in the 9th through 12th grade, the news outlet writes. There are currently 400 students who attend the school. In an effort to ensure that students feel supported throughout their high school journey and after graduation, each student has a support group that is made up of current students and those who have graduated to help them stay on track. JRLA also provides students with leadership courses that delve into how to navigate real-life situations surrounding drugs, violence, and other issues that they may have to confront in their everyday lives. The school also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and empowers its students to evoke change in their communities. JRLA is tuition-free and has an open enrollment. Rose says that he understands the essentiality of having access to a good education. “Education is a valuable tool that unlocks the future of so many young people, and the dynamics in our country have changed, which is [why I chose to] be the founder of a tuition-free public charter high school that gets zero state funding for the facility,” he told the news outlet. “It’s crucial for us to get our scholars out in the community to do charity work and to give them the life skills they will need to be successful in the endeavors that they have, and it’s more for us than just obviously the curriculum that’s required to graduate from school.” Rose isn’t the only celebrity who is using his platform and resources to further education. Almost a year after opening a charter school in Harlem, Sean Combs recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx.
