Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate

I t’s been nine years since retired NBA star Jalen Rose opened the doors to a charter school that he created in Detroit and his effort to further education in the area has proven to be a success. According to Ebony , Rose’s school has a 93 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Jalen Rose says In June, it will be the first time JRLA scholars that graduated from colleges across the country will have the opportunity to attend our graduation and speak to the graduates of our senior class. https://t.co/iWCaQoxBwN — EBONY MAGAZINE (@EBONYMag) October 28, 2018 The school—which is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy—was created for youth in the 9th through 12th grade, the news outlet writes. There are currently 400 students who attend the school. In an effort to ensure that students feel supported throughout their high school journey and after graduation, each student has a support group that is made up of current students and those who have graduated to help them stay on track. JRLA also provides students with leadership courses that delve into how to navigate real-life situations surrounding drugs, violence, and other issues that they may have to confront in their everyday lives. The school also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and empowers its students to evoke change in their communities. JRLA is tuition-free and has an open enrollment. Rose says that he understands the essentiality of having access to a good education. “Education is a valuable tool that unlocks the future of so many young people, and the dynamics in our country have changed, which is [why I chose to] be the founder of a tuition-free public charter high school that gets zero state funding for the facility,” he told the news outlet. “It’s crucial for us to get our scholars out in the community to do charity work and to give them the life skills they will need to be successful in the endeavors that they have, and it’s more for us than just obviously the curriculum that’s required to graduate from school.” Rose isn’t the only celebrity who is using his platform and resources to further education. Almost a year after opening a charter school in Harlem, Sean Combs recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx. We Don’t Call That Money Over Here: 15 Rappers Who Violated Hov’s Money Phone Rule

Getty Images Here’s A Gallery Of Rapper’s Who Like To Flaunt Their Cash For Everybody To See Since the release of ‘4:44,’ everyone has been bossing up and absorbing the knowledge the all-powerful Shawn Carter dropped on us throughout the album. One bar getting virtually every rapper’s panties in a bunch is the following lyric from “The Story Of O.J.”: “y’all on the ‘Gram holdin’ money to your ear, there’s a disconnect, we don’t call that money over here.” This shot most likely isn’t about one person in particular, because this practice of rappers flaunting their wealth–especially nowadays with Instagram and other social media venues–is completely ubiquitous. Though many credit (read: fault) the new rappers with pictures holding their entire record deal in cash up to their ear, they definitely aren’t the only culprits. Some legends and older rappers have been known to do the same thing, and catch virtually none of the blame. Y’all into the money calls, or you with Jay in thinking it’s corny? Let’s take a look at some of your favorite rappers with ever-so-cherished stacks of money, whether making long-distance phone calls or just flaunting in general:   https://www.instagram.com/p/BLMo3HOhm1t/?taken-by=meekmill https://www.instagram.com/p/BNPfD9UBoCs/?taken-by=fettywap1738 https://www.instagram.com/p/BQvxVlbgTyX/?taken-by=quavohuncho https://www.instagram.com/p/BUORtpPj7DN/?taken-by=champagnepapi https://www.instagram.com/p/BVJP4dXHpI3/?taken-by=21savage https://www.instagram.com/p/8zy-nCsLyL/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BLhP-QjAkXM/?taken-by=lilyachty https://www.instagram.com/p/BSP8N0QA2e7/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BQLtbV9ACsD/?taken-by=quavohuncho https://www.instagram.com/p/BUU-dI4F3Ek/?taken-by=travisscott https://www.instagram.com/p/BMdeQvBhA3P/?taken-by=laflare1017&hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/BSkLwW7jBo9/?taken-by=hairweavekiller&hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/BQwAt1Dj418/?taken-by=richforever https://www.instagram.com/p/BWNwmM-F1aq/?taken-by=kodakblack

Hi Hater: Maryland Gov. Investigates Wealthy Black PG County For High School Graduation Fraud

Image via Larry French/Getty Maryland Governor Looks Into Allegations Of Graduation Fraud In PG County Prince George’s County has 5 of the top 10 richest Black neighborhoods in America according to Atlanta Black Star . It stands to reason that communities like PG County where there are stable homes and economic empowerment would likely yield an above average high school graduation rate. However, according to the Washington Post , Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is skeptical of all the #blackexcellence taking place just outside the nation’s capitol. Governor Hogan has launched an investigation into PG County school’s where there have been allegations that teachers are finessing students’ grades to increase the graduation rate. The CEO of Prince George’s County Schools, Kevin Maxwell, denies any such thing. We’re definitely gonna keep an eye on this one. If Governor Hogan doesn’t come back with some hard evidence then this whole investigation into one of the wealthiest Black communities in America is gonna look REAL funny in the light.

SMH: Police Remove Black Merit Scholar From Graduation For Refusing To Take Off Kente Cloth

Black Merit Scholar Removed From Graduation For Wearing Kente Cloth A gifted Black teen was forcibly removed from his California high school graduation by police for refusing to remove his traditional African kente cloth according to NY Daily News : Nyree Holmes, 18, was ejected from the ceremony as he walked off the stage on Tuesday at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. The graduating Cosumnes Oaks High School senior had been urged to discard the item of clothing several times, and was told police would stop him, if it came to that. “I go through shaking all the hands and smiling feeling as if I won,” Holmes wrote Tuesday on Twitter, according to the Atlanta Black Star. “Then when I get to the stairs I see three sheriffs at the bottom of the stairs. They tell me to leave with them and I said, ‘sure guys let’s go.’” After he was booted, Holmes said he and his father tried to retrieve the teen’s diploma, but school officials refused to give it up. But with the help of a black security guard, Holmes was able to get in “through the exit” and claim his diploma, he wrote on Twitter. Holmes felt the need to wear the kente cloth because as a “descendant of slaves, I have no firm connection to my roots in Africa,” he told the ABS. Check out footage of the teen being escorted out the graduation below: SMH!!!!

Terminally-Ill High Student Inspires a School, Nation

Prepare to shed all the tears, Hollywood Gossip readers. All thanks to an 18-year-old named Jake Bailey. A week before the senior high school student was scheduled to give a speech at his graduation in New Zealand, he was diagnosed with Burkitt's non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a fast-growing form of cancer. Despite this grim prognosis, however, the Senior Monitor (equivalent to Class President in America) left his hospital bed, climbed into his wheelchair and delivered words of moving wisdom to teacher and classmates at Christchurch Boy's High School assembly. “I wrote a speech, and a week before I was due to deliver this speech tonight they said, 'You've got cancer,' ” he said from a wheelchair, continuing: “They said, 'If you don't get any treatment within the next three weeks, you're going to die.' Then they told me I wouldn't be here tonight to deliver this speech.” Principal Nic Hill was prepared to give Bailey’s speech on the teenager’s behalf, but it turned out this wasn’t necessary. “Here's the thing, none of us get out of life alive, so be gallant, be great, be gracious and be grateful for the opportunities you have,” Bailey said. “We don't know where we might end up, or when we might end up.  “The future is truly in our hands. Forget about long term dreams, lets be passionately dedicated to the pursuit of short term goals.” These would be inspiring words coming from anyone, let alone coming from a brave young man basically on his deathbed. The senior finished his speech with the school's motto, “Altiora Peto,” which translates to “I seek higher things.” Watch now. Prepare to cry. And be amazed at how those in attendance pay tribute to Bailey upon completition of his speech. God bless you, Jake Bailey.

Tyga’s INSANE Graduation Gift to Kylie Jenner Revealed!

Earlier this week, we learned that Kylie Jenner graduated high school. She was homeschooled, so there was no official  cap-and-gown ceremony, but there was a wild backyard party last night, complete with Khloe Kardashian twerking like it’s going out of style. (Note to Khloe: It already has.) It was a star-studded shindig attended by all of the A-listers in the Jenner-Kardashian’s inner circle. Kylie even received her diploma from esteemed scholar/noted D-bag Ryan Seacrest. But in all of the many, many Instagram pics and Snapchat videos that were taken at the party, one important person is missing. It seems Kylie’s boyfriend Tyga was nowhere to be seen at the festivities, and his absence is fueling rumors that he was recently  dumped by Kylie . If the reports are true, it seems T-Raw is doing everything in his power to get back in Kylie’s good graces. The week of the party, he was spotted leaving Polachek’s Jewelers – an LA store specializing in fancy watches. Shortly thereafter, Kylie posted the pic below. Sure, she seems happy with the lavish gift, but is she happy to welcome Tyga back into her life? The rapper was recently caught up in a cheating scandal when it was alleged that he had an affair with porn star Mia Isabella .  Something tells us even the most diamond-studded Rolex can’t quite make up for that.
