The #EssenceFest  hashtag was trending for the past three days with tweets, Instagram and Facebook posts replete with status updates and photos of Black splendor live and direct from New Orleans. But amid the revelry were a handful of serious moments that spoke directly to the past, present and future of Black people in America. 1. Al Sharpton Rev. Al Sharpton ’s keynote address at ESSENCE Fest implored attendees to realize the dire consequences of both America’s immigration policies, the president choosing a new Supreme Court justice as the importance of voting. Roundtree (@WendyJarel) July 7, 2018 3. Maxine Waters Political commentator Angela Rye made sure ESSENCE Fest attendees knew how important California Congresswoman Maxine Waters was, is and will continue to be for Black America, no matter how hard the president works to discredit her achievements. “WE stand with MAXINE!” @angela_rye honoring @MaxineWaters during #EssenceFest Day 2! pic.twitter.com/fuBKHHHnPu — ESSENCE Festival (@essencefest) July 8, 2018 Waters responded in kind by offering some words of wisdom for how to keep moving forward as the powers that be try to make us take steps backward. Prison reform discussion Rappers Meek Mill and Remy Ma had an intimate talk with NBC News’ Lester Holt about prison reform, one of the most important existential issues facing Black people. Having become all but the face of the prison reform movement as of late, Meek Mill offered his thoughts on how to effect change. “People say we need to fix the system but, I think it needs to be broken and rearranged,” he said . Mass Shooting In America: Capital Gazette Newspaper In Maryland Terrorized By Gunman, 5 Dead Several “Gravely Injured”

Image via Getty 5 Dead After Captial Gazette Shooting How can anyone possibly watch what is happening in this country and STILL not be on board of gun control? Five people are dead and several more are described as “gravely injured” after the Capital Gazette newspaper office building was attacked by a lone gunman armed with a shotgun according to the Baltimore Sun . The shooter hasn’t been named, but is a white male, and he is alive, no shock there. A reporter inside the building, Phil Davis, was hiding under his desk during the shooting and tweeted a moment-by-moment account: A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead. — Phil Davis (@PhilDavis_CG) June 28, 2018 Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can't say much more and don't want to declare anyone dead, but it's bad. — Phil Davis (@PhilDavis_CG) June 28, 2018 There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload — Phil Davis (@PhilDavis_CG) June 28, 2018 Jesus… Ironically, Phil Davis is a police reporter who writes about shootings and death on a regular basis. As we said, the shooter was taken alive and Davis’ account seems to suggest that once the police arrived the man just stopped shooting. We’ll have more details as they become available. R.I.P. to those who lost their lives.

New Scam Alert! You Won’t Be NIKE’s New Brand Ambassador — Sorry

More here:

Source: Patrick McMullan / Getty Scamming is the oldest fraud in history. Some people do it for the money, and some folks just do it for the thrill.   Unfortunately, people on the other end of the swindle don’t find it as humorous. The ones that fall for the scams are usually the ones who have a great desire for something — like a job at NIKE. Lmao people really think that tagging some fake Nike page on Instagram, is gonna get them recruited by Nike. I’m disappointed. — Shak (@NotShak) June 18, 2018 There’s a fake flyer going around on social media recently, promising sneaker lovers the opportunity to become NIKE Ambassadors and receive free gear. The conning posts asks users with more than 250 followers to repost the advertisement to their IG story, follow the @nike_recruitss page and mention the handle (which sounds hella fake, btw) in their post. But who would fall for that. @nikestore is this real? It’s floating around pic.twitter.com/hoX2PJzNr7 — Travis Cook (@TrappiAm) June 19, 2018 But NIKE, being the brolic brand that it is, shut ish down immediately. That is not an authorized Nike account. Let us know if we can help you with anything else. — Nike.com (@nikestore) June 19, 2018 Stay woke, friends.  People who graduated from a Top 5 public university in the country on IG reposting fake Nike flyers trying to become brand ambassadors. I know the job market is competitive but does it have to come down to this? — Walt (@WaltD336) June 19, 2018 I’m unfollowing everyone that reposts that fake Nike Ambassador post lol — chad miller (@nychad) June 19, 2018

America’s Immigration Policy At The Border Is Literally Killing People

More:

A t least two undocumented immigrants recently detained by U.S. immigration agents have killed themselves before their deportations were complete, underscoring the latest worrisome aspect of the growing humanitarian crisis caused by America’s immigration policies. And while the popular narrative has been that only Latinos have been punished for trying to enter the U.S. illegally, an increasing number of Black and brown migrants have also been on the receiving end of the country’s harsh immigration policies. In the most recent instance of this troubling trend, an Eritrean man seeking asylum in the U.S. out of “fear of returning to his country” had his request denied before he killed himself in transit back to his native country, the Associated Press reported . Zeresenay Ermias Testfatsion hanged himself in a detention area at Cairo International Airport while waiting for a connecting flight to, Eritrea which has been fighting a civil war with neighboring country Ethiopia for nearly two decades. The deadly violence at the border and children being snatched from their families is an all-out humanitarian crisis. Here's what it means for Black immigrants. https://t.co/WVnEilZK6E #Immigrants #BlackLivesMatter pic.twitter.com/jUUtwJilTi — NewsOne (@newsone) May 26, 2018 America’s latest immigration policy that separates migrant families at the border by isolating their children has also had a deadly effect, according to reports. A Honduran national who was told his family would be separated once they were detained at the border for illegally trying to cross into the U.S. killed himself last month, NBC News reported  this weekend. Marco Antonio Muñoz hanged himself in a jail cell in Texas on May 13 while awaiting his deportation, law enforcement officials said. He managed to kill himself despite surveillance cameras being trained on the cell he was being held in. Only Trump's @realDonaldTrump blind supporters believe his denial of making racist remarks about Black immigrants. https://t.co/UyJpTf85QT pic.twitter.com/YvzuC9PZym — NewsOne (@newsone) December 24, 2017 With the reports of dozens of Somalians detained in a Florida jail , advocates for Black immigrants cited an “inhumane” immigration legacy for America and decried the divide-and-conquer tactic being employed at the border by the federal government. “It is tempting to label this policy ‘un-American,’ but the truth is, family separation is a devastating tradition in the U.S. From the nearly 250 years of slavery in U.S. to the harsh conditions in Japanese internment camps of the 1940s, U.S. policy has torn families apart, causing deep intergenerational trauma and betraying any sense of humanity,” Opal Tometi, Executive Director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, said in a statement released late last month. “While we expect nothing more from a man who insulted Black and Brown countries in the Caribbean and Africa, we should expect that our society would rise above this continued hateful rhetoric and dangerous immigration policy and call for our leaders to defy our the darkest days of our history and present by enacting laws that provide a just and humane approach to immigration.” Of the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants in America, just about 600,000 of them were Black, according to the most recent statistics by the  Migration Policy Institute . That was a close second to the  nearly 800,000 undocumented Latino immigrants  in the U.S. SEE ALSO: Trump Ending DACA Affects Black Undocumented Immigrants, Too What The Diversity Visa That Brought NYC Terrorist To U.S. Means For Black Immigrants How One Black Undocumented Immigrant Copes With Changed DACA Status [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3785430″ overlay=”true”]
