Via DailyMail : Several exclusive golf clubs in New York wouldn’t let President Barack Obama play on their courses on Labor Day weekend, it emerged on Wednesday. The Trump National Golf Club, the Winged Foot Golf Club and the Willow Ridge Country Club all turned down Obama, NBC 4 New York reports. The news station says the president’s advance team gave courses only a day or two of notice that Obama would be in the area, and clubs may have rejected the White House’s request to protect their wealthy members from being inconvenienced during the holiday weekend. Membership dues at the swanky golf clubs run upward of $100,000 a year. NBC 4 says it learned of the president’s golf plans from sources who were informed of the calls made by Obama’s advance staff. The news station says it reached out to the clubs that were approached, but they declined to comment. Obama ended up golfing at his customary course on the grounds of the Fort Belvoir military installation in Virginia the next day. Whether they have an issue with his policies or his skin color…the president is the president! SMH.
Teacher Causes Outrage After Allowing Students To Reenact Mike Brown Shooting At School Parents in Alabama are outraged after one mother took to her Faceook page to alert other parents that her child and theirs had been involved a reenactment of the senseless, fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Mike Brown while at school. via WFSA Selma The internal investigation is complete of a sixth grade Dallas County teacher who was placed on paid administrative leave after students in her 6th grade class were instructed to re-enact the August 9th shooting death of Michael Brown in class. Brown, 18, was fatally shot by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer. The unarmed black man’s death by a white police officer has sparked protests and riots in the St. Louis suburb and around the country. Dallas County School System Superintendent Don Willingham says he’s wrapped up his investigation of the unnamed Brantley Elementary School teacher and says he’s discussed his decision with the principal. School officials planned a meeting with the teacher for Thursday afternoon. Results of that meeting are not yet known. The re-enactment sparked outrage after a parent of one of the students complained about the class assignment on social media. The assignment started out as an innocent current events lesson, discussing the recent incident in Missouri that has garnered heavy media attention. But, Jessica Baughn, the student’s mother, says the assignment just went too far. “This is not nowhere near right,” Baughn explained. “It was uncalled for.” Baughn explained the assignment in which her son took part. “She [the teacher] had them get on the internet and look up everything about [the Ferguson shooting],” Baughn says. “They proceeded to re-enact the shooting in class.” Baughn says the students used paper guns and paper bullets. “They actually shot them out of this made gun,” she says. “The child falls on the ground like he’s dead.” Baughn claims a white child played the role of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson and a black student pretended to be Michael Brown. “I understand talking about current history,” the mom explained, “but not re-enacting it I don’t… What are we teaching our children?” We’ll definitely be paying attention to see how this story plays out. The time for change is now. The organization has posted a list of demands as follows: National Demands: President Obama must “Do the Right Thing” and go to Ferguson to meet with local black and brown youth. Attorney General Eric Holder must also meet with local black and brown youth across the country who endure “Zero Tolerance” and “Broken Windows” policing. Ensure transparency, accountability, and safety in our communities by requiring front-facing cameras in police departments with records of racial discrimination by way of arrests, killings, and excessive force complaints. Police need consequences, too. Officers who discharge their weapon on an unarmed person should be suspended without pay pending further investigation. And their name and policing histories should be made available to the public. Right now, the officers who killed John Crawford are sitting at home on paid leave. Tanks and tear gas don’t ever belong in our communities or in the ownership of local police departments. Police should be representatives of the communities they serve, not militant. Community members should have more say, input during citizen review boards. The “Top Shelter Dog in America” contest recently concluded, as organizations The Wahl Foundation and GreaterGood.org teamed up to encourage shelters around the country to transform their residents. These facilities were given supplies and asked to submit before-and-after photos, with $5,000 going to the shelter who did the best job making over one of its canines. Cleveland Hosts 9th Annual Gay Games Via RawStory Thousands of athletes and fans are converging on Cleveland on Saturday for the opening ceremonies of the 9th Gay Games, bringing the international event to a state that has become a key battleground for gay marriage rights. A federal appeals court in Cincinnati this week heard arguments on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky. Gay marriage supporters have seen a series of legal victories around the country since the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional last year. Cleveland was selected in 2009 over Boston, Washington and other large U.S. cities to host the games, held every four years since they debuted in 1982 in San Francisco. Games co-chairman Steve Sokany said he believes the selection of the Midwestern city was about changing hearts and minds and it has received unprecedented corporate sponsorship. “The tide is turning and I think these games can have a tremendous impact,” Sokany said in an interview. “We are trying to change stereotypes.” Public opinion in Ohio on gay rights has shifted over the past decade, reflecting similar changes in other parts of the country. Ohio voters adopted the gay marriage ban in 2004, but recent polls show a majority of Ohio voters support allowing same-sex couples to marry. For those wondering, no, the “Gay Games” is not playing Twister with Michael Sam. In fact… Organizers expect about 25,000 athletes, spectators and volunteers to gather for the games in Cleveland and nearby Akron over the next eight days, injecting an estimated $50 million into the local economy. The competitions include a triathlon and a marathon, as well as softball, volleyball, darts, bowling and cheering. Figure skating is a crowd favorite, according to organizers. The Games feature a wide variety of athletes – young and old, male and female and both gay and straight. Wonder is Lebron James and Johnny Manziel will be making an appearance since this event is all up in their backyard. No pun intended.
