An American man who got his arm stuck in his basement furnace attempted to cut the limb off, after asking himself: “What would MacGyver do?” 31-year-old Jason Metz became trapped when he reached around his boiler and couldn't get his arm back out. After 12 hours had passed Metz, inspired by the iconic 80s TV character, concluded that amputation was his only chance for survival. Six hours later, he'd mustered up the courage and began to cut. Unfortunately things didn't quite go to plan. After he cut halfway through his arm, Metz hit a bundle of nerves and the pain soon became unbearable. By this stage, the still-trapped Metz had a severed arm yet the entire procedure hadn't actually done anything to aid escape. Fortunately friends of Metz, alarmed after he failed to turn up to work, rang emergency services who were able to save Metz's life but couldn't reattach partly-amputated appendage. Mr Metz's family have set up a website to collect donations to help pay for a prosthetic arm.
