Katie Couric Splits with Brooks Perlin

Katie Couric is back on the market. The reporter and future talk show host has split with her boyfriend of five years, entrepreneur Brooks Perlin. The New York Post first reported the break up. The couple – who met at a 2006 fundraiser for cancer research – were “at different stages in their careers,” according to a friend of the ABC correspondent, adding: “The split was inevitable.” Couric’s husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998. He was 42. Couric will debut her new talk show on ABC in May, while she hosts a two-hour year-end special on December 15, looking back at various newsmakers from 2011. Looks like she can now include herself in that group. [Photo: WENN.com]

Keith Olbermann to Debut on Current TV June 20

Keith Olbermann, the controversial, progressive commentator who abruptly left MSNBC in January, will return June 20 at his next home, Current TV. The new Countdown with Keith Olbermann will air weeknights at 8 p.m. on the relatively new Current channel, co-founded by former V.P. Al Gore. “The show will combine familiar and popular features with some new elements we can’t wait to unveil,” says Mark Rosenthal, Current TV CEO. MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann unexpectedly early this year, sparking outcry from fans (and some chuckles from critics) and questions of where he would land. As part of his new deal , he also becomes Current’s chief news officer, a position he said was still defined when his Current deal was announced in February. Love him or hate him, Olbermann earned big ratings for MSNBC and was credited with helping create a progressive alternative to conservative talk shows. The precise events that led to his sudden exit in January remain somewhat unclear, but it’ll be interesting to see what following he develops on Current.

Katie Couric Officially Out at CBS News; Eyeing New Show at ABC?

CBS News’ Katie Couric officially confirmed what we all knew was coming today: She is leaving CBS News . “I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I’ve done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning,” she told People . What does the future hold for Couric exactly? “In making the decision to move on, I know that the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.” “I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling,” she says, though when and where are “still being discussed.” There is still an offer on the table for Couric to stay at CBS with a syndicated talk show and a role on 60 Minutes , but they’re not the only interested party. ABC has made a big push for a Couric talk show plus even wider exposure across its news platforms, including a presence on its 2012 election coverage. CBS News is reportedly not willing to match that end of the offer. NBC, which had expressed interest, is no longer in the running. One person close to Couric described the ABC move as “a distinct possibility.” Sources say CBS News initially accepted the idea of having Couric keep a role in the division, but have grown weary of the drawn-out negotiation process. “They are ready to wish her well,” says a person close to the talks. Scott Pelley will replace Katie as CBS News anchor.

Ed Schultz Accuses Palin of ‘Pathetic Political Grandstanding’ in Haiti Trip — But Has He Ever Gone?

On MSNBC Friday night, Ed Schultz proclaimed on his show that Sarah Palin's a phony for touring Haiti now, that the “earthquake happened 11 months ago” and now she's just doing it to plug her new book and reality show. (Ed seems to have missed the recent cholera outbreak. Who needs the Couric question about what newspapers he reads?) Since liberals usually equate traveling to desperate spots of global poverty with compassion, let's ask this question: When has Ed Schultz been to Haiti? A review of transcripts on Nexis and Google searches provide no shred of evidence that Schultz has cared enough to visit. But there he was in his New York studio — the one he may have threatened to burn down for leaving him out of network promos — trashing Palin as insincere at the top of his show: “The next stop on Sarah Palin’s grandstanding tour is Haiti.

‘CBS Evening News’ Anchor Couric Ridiculed Palin from Day One; Mocks Son’s Name

Want more evidence of an elitist vibe coming from the upper echelons of the mainstream media? You ought to remember the Sept. 24, 2008 Katie Couric interview of Sarah Palin. It’s been celebrated time and time again as a heralded part of American journalism . However, raw footage appearing to be from Aug. 29, 2008 shows that Couric, anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” was already predisposed not to have a high regard for the Alaska governor long before that interview. (h/t Conservatives4Palin.com ) Outtakes of CBS’s “Evening News” show Couric taking a few petty shots at the Palin in her coverage leading up to the 2008 Republican National Convention. This five-minute clip has several highlights, showing Couric favoring “moose burgers and beauty pageants,” instead of her professional credentials as mayor of Wasilla, a town Couric has trouble announcing, and her tenure as governor of Alaska. Highlights include the following: Couric mocking Palin’s oldest son’s name:  “Her oldest son, 19-year-old Track-Where the hell do they get these [names]?” [laughter] (1:09) “She hunts, fishes and eats moose burgers. Her parents, Sally and Chuck Heath, were out hunting caribou when they got the news. You can’t make this up – OK hold on a second. [laughter]” (1:43) “I’m saying I’m glad you took out the feminine side because you can be feminine and play basketball, right Jerry?” (1:59) Struggles with the pronunciation of the name of the town Wasilla. (4:05) This isn’t the first time Couric has been caught on camera and the footage leaked out. In 2007, footage of Couric openly mocking her predecessor Dan Rather found its way on the Internet.

Palin’s Campaign Chaperone Eviscerates Her for Lying in Book

Nicolle Wallace , the campaign aide Palin blames for her disastrous Couric interview and other crises, struck back on The Rachel Maddow Show last night. And, holy crap, did she tear Sarah a new one. Wallace—a Bush-era attack dog whose career highs include helping orchestrate the John Kerry flip-flop smear—was the staffer the McCain camp charged with keeping track of Palin.
