Soundgarden Set To Begin Recording New Album ‘Very Soon’

Recently reunited Seattle stars announce plans for first studio album in 15 years. By James Montgomery Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News It’s been 15 years since we’ve been able to say this, but it looks like there’s a new album from Soundgarden in the works. That’s according to the Seattle screamers themselves, who took to their official site to announce plans for a new studio record, their first since 1996’s Down on the Upside. “Over the past few months, we’ve been busy jamming, writing and hanging out together — exploring the creative aspect of being Soundgarden. It feels great,” the band wrote, under the headline “Our Goal for 2011: Let’s Make a Record.” “We have some cool new songs that we are going to record very soon. Thank you for all the support!” Soundgarden announced that they were ending a 12-year hiatus on January 1, 2010, and then played a handful of shows: one in Seattle under the handle “Nudedragons,” then a sludgy Chicago gig ahead of their headlining slot at Lollapalooza . Buoyed by the success of those gigs, Soundgarden released Telephantasm, a career-spanning collection of hits and sundry, in September, and hinted to MTV News that the album might just be a preview of things to come. “We’re taking baby steps … Baby Godzilla steps,” guitarist Kim Thayil joked. “Maybe we’ll do, like, ‘Soundgarden on Ice,’ [next]” frontman Chris Cornell laughed. “‘Sound-Capades.’ I’d watch that.” In January 2011, the band announced plans to release Soundgarden: Live on I-5, recorded on the West Coast leg of their 1996 tour. The album will hit stores on March 22. Related Artists Soundgarden

Will.i.am Says Artists Should Be ‘Scared’ Of iTunes

‘Believe me, I love Apple … but iTunes shouldn’t be the answer,’ MC says at Grammy Foundation event. By Mawuse Ziegbe will.i.am Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Will.i.am is clearly tech-savvy — the MC was just named director of innovation at Intel — but the Black Eyed Peas frontman thinks artists’ interest in technology shouldn’t end with just releasing their tracks via an online retailer. The rapper/producer recently chatted it up with attorneys and music industry insiders at the Grammy Foundation’s annual Entertainment Law Initiative Luncheon in Los Angeles, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, will urged his fellow recording artists not to think of mega-successful e-retailer iTunes as a panacea for moving units. “Believe me, I love Apple … but iTunes shouldn’t be the answer,” will said, adding, “[For artists], it should be the scariest thing in the world.” The message may appear to be a bit harsh toward Steve Jobs’ empire, but “The Time (Dirty Bit)” star ultimately maintained that aspiring artists should actively embrace technology as a means of enhancing their creative expression. “We need to inspire kids to take notice of how and why a computer works,” he said. “It’s the marriage of art and science.” The BEP lyricist is already doing his part to conflate the tech and music worlds at his new post at Intel. When his partnership with the processing giant was announced, the star explained that he was looking forward to tinkering on game-changing projects. “Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” Will said in a statement. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.” What do you think of will.i.am’s thoughts about artists relying on iTunes? Justin Bieber: Kanye West ‘Doesn’t Even Use a Phone’

Justin Bieber and Kanye West worked together on a remix of his track “Runaway Love”, which will be included on Justin’s new LP Never Say Never – The Remixes , but the 16-year-old pop star insists the creative process was made harder due to Kanye’s reluctance to speak on any telephone. Bieber said: “It’s funny, because he doesn’t even use a phone, he just sends email. It’s so crazy. I’m like, ‘How can you not use a phone?'” Despite his aversion to telephone chats, Justin insists it was great working with Kanye because he was such a talented and “nice” guy to be around. He added to MTV News: “He reproduced the Runaway … joint, and I’m really excited. It was amazing. He’s such a cool guy, and he’s just really laid back and just nice, and at the end of the day, he’s just a nice person.” Meanwhile, Justin’s manager Scooter Braun has revealed the 16-year-old music sensation has been working with Kanye, 33, on several tracks which could make his next studio LP. Scooter said: “Justin is working on new music. He and Kanye had a call the other day about a song they’re trying to work on together – Kanye wants to produce a bunch of new songs for the new album.”

Will.I.Am Named Intel’s ‘Director Of Creative Innovation’

Black Eyed Peas mastermind says he’ll ‘co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain.’ By James Montgomery Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images You might think that with his busy schedule of winning Grammys and wearing things made out of Legos , will.i.am wouldn’t exactly be looking for a day job. And yet, he’s just landed one: “Director of creative innovation” for Intel. On Tuesday, Intel — the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer — announced they are partnering with the Black Eyed Peas mastermind on a “multi-year, hands-on creative and technology collaboration,” which, much like Lady Gaga’s deal with Polaroid , will lead to the development and creation of new products. “Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” Will said in a statement. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.” Intel added that, in his new role with the company, Will is set to “collaborate on many creative and technology endeavors … that may include such devices as laptops, smart phones and tablets.” He also will create new music expressly for the company. “We’re thrilled to tap into the limitless creativity will.i.am brings to the table. He’s not only a brilliant artist and producer, but also an innovator pushing the bounds of technology professionally and personally,” said Deborah Conrad, Intel’s vice president and chief marketing officer. “Our partnership … is a prime example of how we want to convey and deliver the Intel experience. It’s imperative that Intel and our innovations are kept in front of the global youth culture that embraces new devices and new forms of communication and entertainment.” Related Artists Will.I.Am Black Eyed Peas

‘Alien’ Prequel Turns Into Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

‘While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping-off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology,’ director tells Deadline. By Kara Warner Ridley Scott Photo: 20th Century Fox Ever since news broke that Ridley Scott would be revisiting his famous “Alien” franchise in the form of a prequel, the Internets have been a buzzing with rumors, analysis, etc. There have been a slew of actors and writers rumored to be attached to the film , including Keanu Reeves and Natalie Portman, writer John Spaihts and a rewrite from “Lost” genius Damon Lindelof. What we know so far is that the film will be set 30 years prior to the original “Alien,” and on Friday (January 14) came word that it isn’t so much a prequel as something “more original,” according to a Deadline report. The film has an official title, “Prometheus,” and release date, March 9, 2012. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (“Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) has signed on to star as Elizabeth Shaw, one of two female leads. The rest of the cast is said to be filled out “soon,” with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron both said to be interested in jumping on Scott’s expectedly epic return to sci-fi filmmaking. Scott once told MTV News that he “avoided sequels, unless [he] felt there was something fresh,” and judging from what he’s doing with “Prometheus,” the new film will be just that. “While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping-off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” he said. “The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’ ‘s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.” Lindelof said what lured him in was Scott’s original vision for the film: “It’s daring, visceral and, hopefully, the last thing anyone expects,” he said, adding that working with the Oscar winner is a dream come true. “When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Hannah Holman in a Funny Marc Jacobs Campaign of the Day

I don’t know if Marc Jacobs was the creative mind behind this campaign, but I do know that it was likely a gay guy, because every gay guy I knows thinks vaginas are fucking disgusting…..maybe it is based on the one straight experience they had before they took the dick in the ass plunge was a vile one that tasted and smelled worse than a dead hooker rotting in the some seedy hotel she overdosed in….or maybe it’s just cuz vaginas can be a scary fucking thing, wet and filled with bacteria, yeast and stale semen from the men they let cum inside them…and unfortunately I can’t really relate, cuz no pussy smells or tastes too bad for me, I am fascinated by each lip and wrinkle I come across, like I’m James Cameron on some underwater sea exploration, looking for never before seen jellyfish or some shit…but I do like a good use my perfume you dirty slut cuz it’ll make your stinky digusting barnyard horse shit smelling cunt smell like Daisy Eau So Fresh…. Pretty fucking clever….

Which Emmy Nominees May Be One Step Closer to an EGOT?

One thing left unexplored on this Emmy Nomination Day is the EGOT, the extremely rare phenomenon that occurs when an entertainer wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. (Ironically, though the EGOT got its biggest spotlight ever thanks to Tracy Morgan’s recent obsession with it on 30 Rock , he wasn’t nominated for his role this season.) Here are the 2010 Emmy nominees who could get one step closer to attaining the Showbiz Award Grand Slam that has only been claimed by a dozen performers ever.
