Western Digital Corp. today reported revenue of $1.6 billion, on shipments of approximately 31.6 million units and net income of $50 million, or $0.22 per share, for its fiscal third quarter ended Mar. 27, 2009. The company’s results include charges of $14 million for in-process research and development related to the SiliconSystems, Inc. acquisition and $4 million associated with the restructuring plan announced Dec. 17, 2008. The company generated $355 million in cash from operations during the March quarter, ending with total cash and cash equivalents of $1.6 billion. Excluding these charges, non-GAAP net income was $68 million or $0.30 per share.1 In the year-ago quarter, the company reported revenue of $2.1 billion, unit shipments of 34.5 million and net income of $280 million, or $1.23 per share. Coyne also noted that WD sustained its investments in technology and new products in the March quarter, with growing shipments of the industry’s first 2 terabyte hard drive and of several new products in its branded products portfolio. An 18-year-old who pursued fame on a reality TV show after being prosecuted for her role in the “bling ring” celebrity burglary case was sentenced to six months in jail . Alexis Neiers was a relatively minor player in the ring – also termed the Burglar Bunch – but took a bigger role when her arrest coincided with production of Pretty Wild. That E! show depicts Alexis and her two sisters growing up in the fast lane in suburban Los Angeles as aspiring starlets … and apparently, robbers. Nice work, ladies! Neiers will be also placed on three years probation and must pay restitution to Orlando Bloom, whose home was burglarized by Neiers and several others, police said. PRETTY JAILED : Alexis Neiers is going to prison. Wild! Dressed in a black blazer, designer jeans and white shoes, Alexis stood with a sullen expression in court. She was given a two-year suspended sentence for the crime. Bloom was among a dozen high-profile celebrities – including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Patridge and Rachel Bilson – targeted in 2008 and 2009 by the ring. The troubled teens were somehow able to steal millions in valuables before getting caught. Nick Prugo was the first of the tools to be thrown in the shed. So to speak.

Robert "Joe" Halderman Headed to Prison For David Letterman Extortion

David Letterman’s extortionist did the crime, now he’ll do the time. Robert “Joe” Halderman, the former CBS News producer who copped to one count of attempted first-degree larceny, was sentenced today to six months in jail. Money-grubbing mistress of David Boreanaz , take note. Robert Halderman could’ve faced up to 15 years in lockup had the case gone to trial. Instead, his plea deal ensures he’ll serve no more than the half-year term. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Charles Solomon also gave him four and a half years’ probation and ordered him to perform 1,000 hours of community service. Letterman blackmailer Halderman was snared in a sting operation . The 48 Hours Mystery producer was busted in October for trying to shake down Letterman for $2 million in return for keeping quiet about Dave’s affair with his former intern and Halderman’s then-live-in lover, Stephanie Birkitt . Owing thousands of dollars in child and spousal support to his ex-wife, Halderman approached him under the guise of selling a screenplay … to Dave’s own life. Rather than buying it to keep his liaisons a secret, Letterman blew the whistle, bluntly admitted on the air that he cheated on wife Regina Lasko, and moved on. Halderman’s moving on too … to the big house. Nice work, man!

China: A Man Attacked Children With A Hammer And Burned Himself To Death

A farmer with a hammer attacked children at a primary school in eastern China on Friday and set himself on fire in a classroom suicide after the attack. The attack hurt a teacher and five children. Just this week, 2 mentally disturbed adults attacked schools that left 8 children dead and almost 50 injured. The assailant poured gasoline over himself while holding two children in his arms. Fortunately, teachers were able to manage to pull the two children away from the man. The man died after setting himself on fire at the primary school in Weifang City, Shandong Province. Victims from the attack were sent to hospital for immediate treatment. There was no life threatening injuries reported. United Nation Official Calls Democratic Republic of Congo “Rape Capital Of The World”

A senior UN official has said that the Democratic Republic of Congo is “the rape capital of the world.” The UN’s representative on sexual violence in conflict Margot Wallstrom encourages the Security Council to punish the perpetrators. With impunity being the rule rather than the exception, rape has remained a dominant feature on the continuous conflict in eastern DR Congo. During the fight in 2009, more than 8,000 women were raped. According to Wallstrom, if women continue to suffer sexual violence, it is not because the law is inadequate to protect them, but because it is inadequately enforced. Women have no rights, if those who violate their rights go unpunished. The UN mission in DR Congo has been trying to handle the problem by escorting women on their way to market, developing early warning systems and working with local officials. A research on sexual violence in DR Congo’s eastern South Kivu province was conducted in April and it produced shocking findings. The report done by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative reflects that about 60% of rape victims in South Kivu were gang raped by armed men. More than half of the assault took place in the victim’s residence and an increasing number of attacks were being carried out by civilians.
