Arcade Fire Throw An Anti-Grammy Party At Secret Show

The Grammy-nominated indie rockers announced details of the Los Angeles theater show just 12 hours before taking the stage. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — It wasn’t the Grammys, and it wasn’t supposed to be. On Friday night, far away from the machinations of the music industry and the glad-handling of golden gramophones, in a grand old theater that now doubles as the Ukrainian Culture Center of Greater Los Angeles, Arcade Fire — the indie band who, at Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards , will face off against the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga for Album of the Year — threw what will probably go down as the week’s greatest un-official, anti-Grammy pre-party: a sweaty, exuberant, all-ages secret show that felt about a million miles removed from the award-show hysteria that has descended on much of the city. Only 500 tickets were sold, in a first-come, first-serve basis at three locations (a pair of record stores and the venerable El Rey Theatre) on Friday afternoon. There was no red carpet outside or a VIP area inside, just the still-elaborate eaves of an 86-year-old building now crumbling away on a decidedly gritty stretch of Melrose Avenue. The band gave away “free drinks and cotton candy” before the show even began. It was, in short, an anti-industry affair in all conceivable ways, and Arcade Fire savored every second of it. As the strains of Julie Andrews’ “Lusty Month of May” crackled over the speakers, the Canadian band’s members took to the tiny stage, grinned and then, appropriately enough, blasted headlong into “Month of May,” from their Grammy-nominated The Suburbs, with frontman Win Butler cocking his head and jutting his guitar out into the crowd — who, being so close, gladly reached out and grabbed it. Given that they were playing at full strength — eight in all, sawing and hammering away on a menagerie of violins and keyboards and drums and guitars — and that, for much of the past decade, they’ve been tailoring their sonics to massive festival crowds and cavernous indoor spaces, the sound they produced in this little theater was enormous; it washed over the audience, all the way to the back of the building, and then up to the arched ceilings. And that only added to the euphoria. Because there truly is something to be said about seeing a band this big in a venue this small. Already-massive songs like “Rebellion (Lies)” and “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” became even larger, the bass rumbled and the strings stabbed, the chanted vocals of R

Jesse Eisenberg Reponds to his ‘Oscar Nod’ and Stefon Can’t Finish His Lines: Two New SNL Clips

Two new SNL videos have emerged from Studio 8H on this lazy Wednesday afternoon: The first highlights a pair of promos for this weekend’s Jesse Eisenberg-hosted show, where Bill Hader congratulates The Social Network star for his Oscar nomination. Standard stuff. Not the second video, though, which features a rare look at the SNL dress rehearsal. Have you ever wanted to see Seth Meyers sarcastically berate the crowd for not responding correctly to his “Update” jokes — a sin which means that joke will not air during the live broadcast? Here’s your chance! Also, if you think that Hader has difficulty getting through his lines as Stefon on the live broadcasts, you really need to watch how hard it is for him at dress rehearsal.

Flo Rida Cruises Into 2011 On ‘MTV New Year’s Bash’

Rapper rocks ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ and more hits during Times Square special. By Mawuse Ziegbe Flo Rida (file) Photo: Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images Flo Rida kicked off 2011 with not just a bang, but three of his biggest club bangers. The Southern MC took revelers on a hit-packed ride for “MTV New Year’s Bash” on Friday (December 31), kicking off his performance with the David Guetta-assisted smash “Club Can’t Handle Me.” Audience members went nuts when DJ Kronik dropped the booty-quivering thump of the club mainstay, and Flo, decked out in a gray pullover with a red Louis Vuitton scarf draped around his neck, crimson Nike kicks, red shades and a hefty Poe Boy chain, led the crowd with his supercharged energy. Hands shot in the air at Flo’s command, heralding the beefy rapper as he headed down the platform. But he didn’t confine the party to the stage, hopping in the crowd to fist-pump alongside fans and even let a couple partyers wail the chorus into his mic. Flo also hit the stage to rock his latest single, “Who Dat Girl.” Despite the frosty NYC weather outside, the Miami spitter kept the heat going indoors, ditching the sweater in favor of a white tank that showed off his trademark guns. Flo then switched to his 2009 dance-floor filler “Right Round” and pulled an amped fan in a snug animal-print dress onstage to groove alongside him. Both rocked out on the platform in the center of the audience, and Flo capped off his lucky fan’s moment in the spotlight by letting her wear his massive chain. MTV News caught up with Flo after getting the party started in Times Square, and the hitmaker dished about the secrets to making a surefire club jam. “To make a club hit, it’s gotta be like ear candy. I think the production has to stand out from all the songs that are out [and] have a great melody,” said Flo, whose tracks like “Right Round” and “Low” have shattered records. “People catch on to a melodic sound faster than anything, not just here in the States, just around the world.” He also added that in addition to the beat, a party-starting record has to have what he dubbed “club lyricism”: lyrics so catchy that anybody at a Flo show could “sing every word and you just hold the microphone out.” With a time-tested formula for crafting smashes already in his hitmaking arsenal, and new 2011 projects from touring to pushing his own new artists, Flo said his New Year’s resolution is all about spreading the wealth. “[I plan] to continue to give,” he said. “I feel like the more you give, the more you receive. It’s just a great feeling to give and not to borrow.” What did you think of Flo Rida’s performance at the “MTV New Year’s Eve Bash?” Let us know in the comments.

‘Jersey Shore’ Star Vinny’s Old Spice Spoof To Be Featured On MTV New Year’s Special

‘MTV’s New Year’s Bash 2011 will provide a comedic look back at the past year,’ says Shawn Witt, executive producer of show. By MTV News Staff Vinny Guadagnino Photo: MTV New Year’s Eve is about to get a lot funnier now that “Jersey Shore” star Vinny will be taking a comedic stab at one of 2010’s most memorable commercials. MTV’s New Year’s Eve special will include a first look at Vinny’s Old Spice spoof. “MTV’s New Year’s Bash 2011 will provide a comedic look back at the past year,” Shawn Witt, executive producer of MTV’s “New Year’s Bash 2011,” explained, adding, “Vinny’s Old Spice commercial parody is just one of the many satirical pieces we will feature throughout the show.” You know about the famous ball that drops on New Year’s Eve, but MTV has something a little different lined up for its big New Year’s celebration. “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi will climb into a ball that will be lowered into New York’s Times Square to help ring in 2011 at the MTV New Year’s Bash. “MTV is looking to redefine the concept of the traditional New Year’s Eve broadcast,” Steve Tseckares, MTV’s Senior Vice President of Special Programming and Production, said in a statement. “This year’s show will push boundaries and provide fans with a diversified content experience that fuses comedy, music and pop culture.” Of course, the sassy “Shore” star won’t be alone, as comedian Whitney Cummings will host the proceedings, rapper Flo Rida will perform and another “Jersey Shore” castmember, Pauly D, will serve as the night’s DJ. It’s all in the name of fun, as the special will take an irreverent look back at the year in music, television, Internet, relationships and more. “I can’t wait to host MTV’s New Years Eve Bash!” Cummings said. “It’s going to be so fun to party with the ‘Jersey Shore’ [cast] and rip on all things 2010. I’m gonna get some really good tweets.” Cummings and her crew will be joined by “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Bobby Moynihan, comedian Nick Kroll, Internet sensation Keenan Cahill and “Pretty Little Liars” castmembers Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario and Shay Mitchell. The special will debut live on MTV and MTV2 from MTV’s Times Square studio on December 31 at 10:30 p.m. ET (tape delay PT). Of course, it wouldn’t be a New Year’s celebration without some serious fist-pumping, so the “Jersey Shore” castmembers will lead the crowd in a fist-pumping frenzy in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. While Cummings will be hosting the show live from MTV’s Times Square studio, the hosts of “The Seven,” Kevin Manno and Julie Alexandria, will be reporting on the festivities down at street level, and the “Shore” kids will make sure to keep the crowd hyped. As if that weren’t enough, the “Jersey Shore” gang will also unveil an exclusive sneak preview of the upcoming third season of the big show. Related Photos Jersey Shore (Season 2) | Vinny

The ring tone? “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.” “Y’know, by Jay-Z,” Ms. Paltrow helpfully reminded the crowd. Just color me surprised that she didn’t refer to him as James-Zed. [ @Nedrick ]

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry Rock Jingle Ball

Madison Square Garden concert also featured Enrique Iglesias, B.o.B. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at “Jingle Ball 2010” Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images NEW YORK — At 7:30 p.m. on the nose, the house lights went down, the girls went crazy, and Jingle Ball 2010 got the party started Friday (December 10) for a rousing night of music and fun at Madison Square Garden. Kim Kardashian, in a white body-hugging dress, kicked off the night’s festivities by noting that it was her first time ever at MSG, then bringing Taio Cruz to the stage. He played “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite,” and for his track “Higher,” he was joined by Travie McCoy, though the song usually features British pop princess Kylie Minogue. Jesse McCartney was on hand to proudly invite Bruno Mars to the stage. The Grammy nominee played drums for an excited crowd. He played “Billionaire,” and the entire room sang along as McCoy joined him for their ode to getting famous. The crowd ate it up. He then slowed it down with “Grenade.” The set ended with “Just the Way You Are” to the delight of the crowd. Jay Sean beat-boxed, then helped introduce Paramore to the stage. The band brought some loud, boombastic rock to the show thanks to a set that included “Brick by Boring Brick.” “Anybody else care to join the party tonight?” frontwoman Hayley Williams asked the crowd before blaring out “Misery” and inviting a fan onstage to sing with her. They finished it off with “The Only Exception.” B.o.B was next to the stage. The rapper got real with his track “Don’t Let Me Fall.” Then the crowd went insane for “Magic.” As if that didn’t get the girls hyped enough, Bruno Mars returned for “Beautiful Girls.” “Everybody put your hands up,” B.o.B told the crowd before playing his massive “Airplanes” with Williams by his side. The crowd went nuts when Flo Rida introduced Selena Gomez for her dance-tastic performance of “Round and Round.” Gomez looked like a true disco queen in her little black dress and heels. She thanked Katy Perry for her next track, “Rock God,” then got trancey for her song “A Year Without Rain,” and ended her set with “Naturally,” crediting it as the reason she got a spot on the radio tour. The show took an adult contemporary and old school turn when Michael Buble arrived to croon tunes such as “Hollywood” and “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and for “Let it Snow,” he got in the crowd and paid homage to the season, dusting MSG with snow confetti. Katy Perry brought the girl power in her performance, which featured ballerinas, Christmas trees, Santa Clauses and Perry popping out of a gift box in a latex toy soldier costume for “Hot n Cold.” “This is Madison Square Garden!” she shouted to the crowd. “This is something I’ve dreamt about for a long time.” “This next song is about falling in love with a foreigner, like far away … Not even in England,” she said to introduce “E.T.” After a jazzy version of “I Kissed a Girl,” she proudly proclaimed, “Let’s dedicate this West Coast anthem to the East Coast right now,” ending her performance with “California Gurls” as red and green confetti fell from the ceiling. Pauly D prompted the loudest screams of the night when he introduced Enrique Iglesias. The Latin pop star played the clean version of “Tonight,” followed by older jams such as “Escape” and “Hero,” serenading a girl from the audience. With the swooning complete, Iglesias ended with fan favorite “I Like It.” Kardashian returned, telling the crowd, “I think I’m catching a fever,” before the night’s most-anticipated performance: Justin Bieber. In a plaid top and khakis, the teen star got his party started with “Somebody to Love.” Bieber was in full swagga mode, dancing like a seasoned pro and getting the crowd hyped. “The last time I was here for Jingle Ball, I had a broken foot, and this year, I’m here and both my limbs are working,” he joked. “We shot a movie here, and it’s coming out in February, and I think we should show you a preview.” The trailer transitioned to “Never Say Never.” Bieber even brought out a surprise guest, Jayden Smith, to join him. “I had someone who’s really special to me, and I decided to bring him out,” he then announced, calling for Sean Kingston for “Eenie Meenie.” The girls went crazy as the pals went back and forth on the cut. “I think I want to slow it down a little bit. My acoustic album had an extra song on it that’s really important to me. But first, I need everyone to close their eyes and ‘Pray,’ ” he said before the inspirational ballad. He then teased the excited crowd, saying, “I think we should do one more song,” and listing some of his track names. He settled on “Baby.” “Who wants to be my baby?” he asked. He ended the night with showers of fireworks and confetti, saying, “You guys are amazing.” Did you go to Jingle Ball 2010? Give us your review in the comments below!
