Katy Perry Teases Her Teen Choice Awards Wardrobe

‘There’s a lot of Velcro involved,’ the host reveals to MTV News of her costume ideas. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News The Teen Choice Awards nominations are in and as host Katy Perry gears up for her August 9 gig, she warns that just about anything is possible once she takes the stage. “What are you not gonna see? That’s the thing!” she teased to MTV News after the listening party for her Teenage Dream LP in New York City. “I mean, I always have a fantastic time hosting these types of things,” Perry added, “and pull out costume after costume after costume.” While Perry was vague about possible wardrobe choices, she did say that viewers should expect to see progressively less clothes as the night wears on. “Usually I start wearing like a layer of clothes and then I just rip off,” Perry told us. “There’s a lot of Velcro involved. But it’ll be fun and I love teenagers because [whereas] children are not jaded and just full of life … teenagers are a little like, ‘Prove to me you’re cool,’ and I’m gonna prove to you that I’m kind of cool. I am not pop-star lame, I am not hipster cool — I am somewhere in the middle.” At the MTV Movie Awards this month, Perry performed her chart-topping “California Gurls.” But the singer revealed she might try out the title single off her August 24 album, performing “Teenage Dream” at the awards show. “I think I might be doing the second single off the record. It’d be a great place … at the Teen Choice Awards because I think a lot of kids are falling in love and they will relate to that song,” she explained. “That song is kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. … It’s intense being in love and being a teenager. That’s what ‘Teenage Dream’ is about.” And speaking of deeply felt adolescent love, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which is up for a number of Teen Choice Awards, pretty much sums up the subject of Perry’s next single. “That’s being a teenager right there,” she agreed. “That would be that dynamic of love.” Are you excited for Katy Perry to host the Teen Choice Awards? Drake Show Shut Down By NYPD

‘I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance,’ rapper tells MTV News in a statement. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News NEW YORK — A Drake show scheduled for Tuesday evening (June 15) in Manhattan was canceled by the New York Police Department after crowd control became a safety concern for organizers of the event. Upward of 10, 000 fans lined the South Street Seaport and even more were present on the outskirts of the venue, lurking, in hopes of spotting the Toronto rapper. Drake was set to appear onstage at 7:45 p.m. ET, but leading up to his appearance, the crowd swelled to a larger-than-expected size. Organizers of the event, sponsored by Paper magazine and also featuring Hanson and Ninjasonik, began slowly asking attendees to be prepared for a cancellation. Confusion abounded just moments later, however, as concertgoers jockeyed for closer positions to the stage, unaware of any danger. Ultimately, police pulled the plug on the event and began trying to disperse bystanders. Drake — celebrating the release of his debut album, Thank Me Later, on Tuesday — tried to notify his fans via Twitter that he was unable to take the stage. “Police are shutting down the show at South Seaport! I’m on my way anyways,” he wrote. “Drizzy Hendrix Woodstock 2010.” The upstart MC, though, was understandably disappointed he was unable to share in the excitement with his fans and issued a statement apologizing to his fans. “I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance and the release of Thank Me Later, ” Drake told MTV News in a statement. “I love performing for my fans, but unfortunately, the show was canceled by the NYPD due to overcrowding, leaving me without the chance to give my fans a real show. I’m thankful for the support that the fans have been giving me … I thank you now.” Fans were also disappointed, but many feared for their own safety as people fought, threw items from nearby restaurants and even trampled other attendees. New York University student Adam Vinson spoke with MTV News and described the chaotic scene. “People didn’t know how to have manners,” he said. “Everyone was up against each other pushing. There was just too many people there. In New York City, though, people are gonna come from out of state, and in the city, there’s already millions of people. The concert goers packed and people started fighting. “I saw dudes fighting,” he added. “One dude said he was gonna light this place up; it was that serious. Once I saw that, it was my cue to leave. People started pushing, bottles were thrown and once dude threatened to shoot, people started trying to get out.” What would you do in that situation? Let us know in the comments. Eminem Surprises E3 Crowd With Guests Travis Barker, Rihanna

Rapper headlined Activision concert that included Usher, Will.I.Am, Jane’s Addiction and others. By Matt Elias Eminem performs at E3 on Monday Photo: Chris Weeks/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Eminem performed an electrifying set at Activision’s E3 party on Monday night, crushing any doubts that he had lost his touch since his long hiatus from the rap game. The Detroit MC headlined a massive bill that included Usher, Will.I.Am, N.E.R.D., Jane’s Addiction, Chris Cornell, David Guetta, Deadmau5 and DJ Z-Trip. Em’s set kicked off with his first surprise of the night at the Staples Center, with Travis Barker jumping behind the drums for an acrobatic drum solo. Em joined him moments later (flanked by D12’s Denaun Porter), taking the stage just before midnight. He was decked out in a black jacket, black jeans and a silver crucifix hanging around his neck. With Em, Barker, Porter and a live band all onstage, the crowd was up on its feet right from the get-go. The six-song set began with “Won’t Back Down,” off of Recovery, which Em just announced would be released on June 21, a day earlier than originally planned . From that moment, there was an energy in the arena that could be felt from the floor all the way up to the luxury suites. Eminem followed with a couple of his recent features — one from B.o.B’s “Airplanes (Part II)” and the other from Drake’s “Forever.” As Drake’s chorus blared, Eminem marched down the stage’s catwalk, chanting “Bounce, bounce, bounce.” He was clearly on his game, bobbing and weaving while he delivered his verses. All of this was punctuated by Barker’s thumping drumbeats, which made it feel more rock show than rap show. After three songs, Eminem addressed his adoring crowd, shouting, “Los Angeles! What the f— is up? Make some motherf—ing noise!” As if he had to ask, Staples Center erupted in ovation. Em then dedicated his next song, “Not Afraid,” to all of the fans that have stuck by his side over the years. His live band was joined by a full orchestra on both sides of the stage. If that wasn’t enough, later in the song, Eminem was joined by an entire gospel choir that numbered in the dozens. Then Eminem sprung his next surprise. “Before I get into this next song,” he said, “I wanna bring out a very special guest.” After a few moments, Barbadian beauty Rihanna appeared onstage with a bright crop of candy-apple-red hair. The duo got right into “Love the Way You Lie” — another new song off the upcoming Recovery. Em and Ri had great chemistry onstage, taking turns sauntering down the catwalk and passing glances at each other throughout the performance. As the song ended, the show seemed to be over. Eminem thanked the crowd and exited the stage. His band stayed on, however, and slowly started playing the opening notes of “Lose Yourself.” As the song built, Eminem stormed back onto the stage and the crowd (as if they could get any louder) exploded. As he ripped through the song, the crowd grew even more excited, with Porter serving as the hype-man. Finally, as the song finished, a shower of gold confetti rained down on the crowd marking the show’s end — but not without its share of surprises. World Cup Begins in Colour and Rhythm

The South Africa 2010 party got under way in style last night with a joyous, colourful and truly African FIFA World Cup™ Kick-off Celebration Concert in Soweto, Johannesburg. Held in the football heartland that is Orlando Stadium, home of iconic club side Orlando Pirates, the concert featured a host of stars including Shakira, Alicia Keys, K’Naan and the Black Eyed Peas. A wide variety of acts took to the stage but the abiding theme was one of celebration for the African continent with the event broadcast across the world. The countdown clock introducing the three-hour extravaganza finally hit zero and with it came a cacophonous roar as seemingly thousands of South Africa flags were lifted aloft creating an ocean of colour among the estimated 30,000 in attendance. Joining the countless Rainbow Nation colours were a broad cross-section of national flags representing every corner of the globe, as the many visitors in attendance took the opportunity to enjoy Africa’s impressive ability to turn on a party. FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma jointly opened the concert after the early acts. As the evening progressed a cavalcade of football stars took to the stage between performances including former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe, Christian Karembeu, Quinton Fortune, Socrates and Jay Jay Okacha. Another joyous presenter was Archbishop Desmond Tutu decked out in Bafana Bafana supporter gear and who introduced a video presentation on Nelson Mandela with trademark enthusiasm. The large crowd rarely dropped their energy levels and their infectious enthusiasm was palpable. “I have been to a lot of concerts but I have never been to a concert like this,” said ebullient Johannesburg resident Khensami Majola, just as K’Naan took to the stage to perform his poignant song ‘Wavin Flag’. “It is amazing fun, we are having a huge jam. It is a perfect presentation of Africa – north, south, east and west.” The concert drew to a spectacular conclusion with Colombian pop princess Shakira in impressive form. She was joined on stage by Freshlyground for a rendition of ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’, the Official FIFA World Cup theme. Another proud concert-goer was Soweto local William Oosthuizen who spoke with pride as he took a rare break from dancing. “I am very proud and I am enjoying this immensely,” he said. “Beauty in the heart of Soweto. This is what Africa is all about. Sport has a unifying factor and it’s all about people enjoying themselves.” #

South Africa, are you ready?

South Africa, South Africa, are you ready?” Black Eyed Peas will.i.am shouted to the 30-000 strong crowd 12 minutes into the live broadcast – and from that moment, the first-ever FIFA World Cup Kick-Off concert hit its stride and the pace never let up. Dressed in glitzy military-themed costumes, Black Eyed Peas ran rapidfire through a medley of hits: “Where Is The Love,” “Pump It,” “Meet Me Halfway,” “Boom Boom Pow,” and “I Gotta Feeling” – the latter’s refrain of “tonight’s gonna be a good, good night” setting the tone for a rare display of stadium-sized international music talent. The live broadcast had opened with a statement of African past and present, with veteran South African jazzman Hugh Masekela segueing from his classic “Grazing in the Grass” into the late Miriam Makeba’s signature song, “Pata Pata” – this time featuring young Afro-soul multi-award winner, Lira on vocals. The potency of Africa’s talent was plain to see: whether it was Benin’s Angelique Kidjo in full vocal throttle on the “Malaika/Afrika” medley with Grammy Award-winners Soweto Gospel Choir, Mali’s Amadou & Mariam’s transporting “Welcome To Mali,” and “Africa”, the intoxicating sound of Mali’s desert Blues outfit, Tinariwen, South Africa’s Afro-folk favourite Vusi Mahlasela, previously unannounced South African kwaito (township house) hitmakers Big Nuz and DJ Tira, The Parlotones’ full-throttle rock or the deft guitarwork of Mali’s Vieux Farka Toure, Africa claimed the spotlight with passion, energy and no small amount of talent. But it was the collaborations that really stole the hearts of the crowd: among the raft of pair-ups was Alicia Keys and swampy South African art-rock outfit BLK JKS in a version of the late Brenda Fassie’s decade-old hit song “Too Late For Mama”, and John Legend riffing off Kidjo before heading off into several of his hit songs including “Green Light.” Thankfully, appearances by dignitaries – including FIFA president Sebb Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma – were kept to a minimum, with more time given over to 1GOAL, the global education program to provide education for 72 million children around the world. 91-year-old former President, Nelson Mandela, was saving his energy for Friday’s opening match between South African and Brazil at Soccer City (Soweto), but the mainly South African-flag waving crowd were delighted to see another of the country’s Nobel Peace Prize winners on stage. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who still stays in his township house near the stadium when he’s in Joburg, joked he was only there to give the crowd “time to rest.” Dressed head-to-toe in the colors of the national South African football team, the peace activist said “You can feel it. You can touch it,” before welcoming the world in multiple languages and getting the crowd to join in praising Mandela. The international artists wore their support for Africa boldly: Juanes sported an Adidas jacket in the colors of the South African flag for his set which included a collabo with BEP’s Taboo. Alicia Keys exhorted the crowd not to “forget to love each other,” and then plunged into “No One.” “Johannesburg it’s such a beautiful night today,” she said before introducing BLK JKS. “It’s our moment,” cried rapper K’Naan, clutching a Somalian flag – his version of “Wavin’ Flag” (Celebration Mix) a show highlight that caused a riot of multi-colooured flag waving in the crowd. Shakira provided the show’s crowning moment, the Colombian singer launching first into “She Wolf” before delivering a show-stopping performance of “Hips Don’t Lie” with South African hip-hop artist Tumi Molekane who had performed earlier in the evening as part of the pre-broadcast show. And when the first notes of the official 2010 FIFA World Cup Song, “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)” were heard and Shakira’s South African collaborators – Afro-pop outfit Freshlyground – appeared, the crowd erupted into an unceasing cry of delight. “Ngiyabonga Mzansi,” (“thankyou South Africa”) Shakira said in closing. After that, all that was left to do was for the performers to gather on stage to jointly (and loosely!) sing “Everyday People”. The Sly & The Family Stone song makes a heartfelt plea for peace and equality and proved a fine end to a night of global football and music unity. The 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off concert was available in the U.S. (and other international territories) as a live stream on vevo.com and it was broadcast by Univision. The concert will air in primetime on ABC, Friday, June 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. #

"Children of All Ages Delighted by Enslavement of Topsy the Circus Elephant" – The Onion

I'm so, so, SO amazed at “The Onion,” who always publishess THE funniest “news” articles. This time, the staff of writers outdid themselves, and no one is laughing. I'm grateful as all hell for their clever contribution………. Children Of All Ages Delighted By Enslavement Of Topsy The Elephant June 2, 2010 | ISSUE 46•22 Photo: Topsy charms the crowd with a “silly hula dance” that he has been conditioned to fear performing incorrectly. TUCSON, AZ—Cheers, laughter, and applause filled the big top tent at the Ringling Bros. Circus Saturday as children of all ages were captivated by the savage enslavement of Topsy the elephant. Whether young or just young at heart, thrilled audience members watched with glee as a circus trainer forced the frightened Topsy to perform tricks by brutally poking and prodding the traumatized 4-year-old pachyderm. “He's such a funny happy elephant,” said 8-year-old Madison Helms, referring to the abused creature that spends the majority of his time chained up in a cramped, feces-covered enclosure. “He loves being in the circus!” The crowd reportedly let out loud gasps and vigorously clapped when Topsy stood up on his hind legs, an unnatural and excruciatingly painful movement that stresses and permanently damages the 8,000-pound elephant's joints. Topsy also delighted the audience after the trainer repeatedly thrust a hooked rod into his skin, causing the miserable animal to lift one leg and his trunk to simulate waving. “Aww…” said the assembled circus-goers, who were taken by the cuteness of the barbaric spectacle. Branden Helger, 9, said Topsy was his favorite performer at Ringling Bros. because the elephant knew how to do neat tricks like pretending to limp. The third-grader also excitedly pointed out the “cool necklace” clamped on the animal's foot. Topsy and the other elephant performers, who are separated from each other at all times, preventing the socialization that's so crucial to their well-being, received a standing ovation from the crowd when they marched into the center ring, nervously rocking back and forth. “Look, they're dancing,” said 5-year-old Jonah Meeks, mistaking the elephants' constant swaying for something that wasn't a maladaptive behavior caused by serious psychological trauma. “I can dance like an elephant, too. Look at me!” Unaware that the elephant was terrified of the glaring stage lights, deafening crowd noise, and constant beatings, Phil Wingren, who brought his family to the circus, remarked that Topsy must relish being a star. “Boy, that Topsy's got it made,” Wingren said to his children, referring to the mistreated, severely neglected creature, who is exposed to numerous diseases and receives no medical attention except when dirt is rubbed into his wounds to hide them from the public. “Always in the spotlight and everybody pampering you. That lucky elephant.” “Look, he even has his own ball,” continued Wingren, referring to the most hated object in Topsy's life. Attending the circus with her grandparents, Gretchen Anderson, 4, was delighted by Topsy and by the other pachyderms as well. “There's his mama,” Anderson said of an elephant unrelated to Topsy, who has not seen his parents since being torn away from them shortly after birth, and last nestled up to his mother when he tried to suckle at her corpse shortly after poachers killed her. “They have a big happy family.” Eyewitnesses who spotted the trainer patting the side of Topsy's body during the final trick were convinced the elephant and the man were best friends, though in fact the look of reverie on Topsy's face was the result of his daydreaming about stomping and crushing the cruel asshole's head like an overripe melon. http://www.theonion.com/articles/children-of-all-ages-delighted-by-enslavement-o… added by: EthicalVegan

Raisin’ McCain

A few months ago, we attended one of Dad’s Town Halls at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. There we met country music star John Rich, half of the great Nashville duo, Big & Rich.  John fired up the crowd by performing some of his hit songs before Dad spoke and he has been enormously supportive of his campaign ever since.  In fact, John has written, produced and recorded an original song called “Raisin’ McCain.” It’s about Dad’s life that will hopefully inspire listeners and excite a new audience about the campaign. It’s a great track, so be sure to click here and download it today!

Below are pics from our campaign visit to Michigan. I did something at a finance event I haven’t done in a very long time – I introduced Dad to the crowd (because my Mom had hurt her hand at a campaign event). I have never been completely comfortable speaking in public but it just seemed easier this time because it was my Dad. On to California and Miami later this week! DJ Khaled Calls Performing With Rick Ross, Diddy, T.I. ‘Legendary’

Super-DJ also shot remix video for ‘All I Do Is Win’ over the weekend, with cameos by Nicki Minaj, Fabolous, T-Pain and more. By Shaheem Reid DJ Khaled says every Memorial Day weekend in Miami is a “moooovie,” but the past few days in South Beach were extra crazy. “I got stories to tell,” Khaled told MTV News on Tuesday (June 1) about the festivities. “It’s gonna be a hot f—ing summer.” Khaled, Rick Ross and Diddy were virtually inseparable over the holiday, hitting club Cameo on Thursday, an assortment of hot spots on Friday, then Mansion on Saturday, the Best of the Best concert on Sunday and, oh yeah, they found time over the weekend to film a video for the remix of Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win,” off his Victory LP. “Call it Rick Ross-DJ Khaled-Supreme Team-Puff Daddy takeover on a whole ‘nother level,” Khaled said. “You already know every Memorial Day Weekend — Miami is ours. We always on fire. This year was special because we shot the remix video of ‘All I Do Is Win.’ Everyone showed up, from Jada to Busta to Puff Daddy to Nicki Minaj to Fabolous to T-Pain to myself. “I know it’s hard to say these types of things, [but] there’s only one remix video I know that’s exciting like this, it’s called ‘Flava in Ya Ear,’ ” Khaled insisted, recalling Craig Mack’s Hype Williams-directed black-and-white clip. “First of all, the [‘All I Do Is Win’] record is the biggest record in the country. To shoot the remix video is something so amazing. It’s coming out soon. I know there’s photos all over the Net, but it’s exciting.” But if there was a soundtrack to Memorial Day in Miami, it was Rick Ross’ The Albert Anastasia EP (out since Thursday), according to Khaled. The super-DJ said he could feel the tape’s immediate impact. “The whole mixtape is crazy. But it’s two records on there that’s lighting up the streets,” Khaled testified. “I don’t know if you remember when we dropped ‘Hustlin’.’ That’s the response we getting, but with two records at the same time. We tore up the club performing ‘All I Do Is Win.’ And the two records off the mixtape, one is called [Blowin’ Money Fast] ‘B.M.F.’ and the other is called ‘MC Hammer.’ These two records, quote me: DJ Khaled says these are going to be the biggest things in the street. It’s already causing problems. It’s already causing problems on a whole ‘nother level. Teflon Don the album — it’s a classic. These records right here are just waking the streets up on a whole ‘nother level. I don’t want nobody to get us confused.” The most exciting part about celebrating a big weekend is getting to interact with the fans, Khaled said. “We did club Mansion the other night. It was DJ Khaled, Puff Daddy, Ross was there, T.I. was there. It was amazing. It was a legendary moment. Everybody performed. I remember when we dropped the ‘B.M.F.’ and ‘MC Hammer’ record, I looked at Ross because the crowd took a deep breath. It had that ‘Hustlin’ ‘ feeling. Best of the Best, it was great because, me and Ross, I threw on ‘All I Do Is Win’ — the crowd went crazy. And we actually performed it three times. Ross, Busta, Nicki, Puff was all in the place to be. It all felt good.” Are you excited to see how the remix video for “All I Do Is Win” turned out? Tell us in the comments!
