Simon Cowell Gets Elaborate Farewell From Paula Abdul, ‘American Idol’

‘I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am,’ Simon says on ‘Idol’ finale. By James Montgomery Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Although the main point of Thursday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” finale was — in theory, at least — to crown a new champion, ever since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he’d be leaving the show at the end of season nine, fans had been wondering just how tonight’s show would unfold. Now we know. Cowell’s departure was treated with equal parts humor and sadness, a mix of a Friars Club roast and a genuine, heartfelt tribute show. And, somewhat fittingly, it culminated in the single largest performance in ‘Idol” history. Show producers poked fun at Cowell’s notoriously prickly demeanor with a series of vignettes, titled “Simon Cowell: Uncovered,” which featured some of his greatest put-downs and bust-ups, along with joking barbs from his soon-to-be former fellow “Idol’ judges. “I think Simon has an incredible poker face. He’s got an ability to really hold back what he’s feeling,” Kara DioGuardi said, while a montage of Cowell cracking up during particularly odious auditions rolled. “He’s very professional.” “Is Simon a flirt?” Paula Abdul asked with a laugh at one point. Abdul, of course, shared the judges’ table for eight years with Cowell. “Yeah, if you’re a mirror,” she said. There was also a song that sampled some of Cowell’s greatest put-downs (“You sounded like a cat being thrown off a skyscraper”; “If you win this contest, we will have failed”; “You sounded like a background singer for a background singer,” etc.). The ditty was performed by comedian Dane Cook, but oddly, it was interrupted by onetime Cowell sparring mate Ian Bernardo, who swiped the mic and launched into a “Kanye moment,” declaring, “Nobody cares, it’s all about Ian Bernardo tonight. I’m going to replace you tonight Simon!” The mic was quickly wrested away from Bernardo by none other than fellow “Idol” oddball Normund Gentle, as cameras pulled away and show producers cut to commercial break. And yet, for a guy who had spent nine seasons shooting down the dreams of “Idol” hopefuls, it was a strangely fitting tribute too. Also jibing with both the “oddball” category was Abdul’s appearance. She appeared center-stage to pay homage to her friend and former colleague, but things quickly devolved, as she joked in her patented mumbled banter about leaving the show because she and Cowell had a love child. Still, things quickly improved from there, as Cowell was serenaded by seven of the eight “Idol’ champions, all of whom had been crowned under his watch (only David Cook was M.I.A.). Then a group of some of the show’s other favorites from seasons past joined the seven, swelling the total number of performers to well over 30. As the crowd cheered, host Ryan Seacrest beckoned Cowell onto the stage, and gave him the microphone. Standing center-stage, with some of the greatest “Idols” surrounding him, the man known for his massive ego seemed downright touched. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am. … The show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the support, the fun, and your sense of humor,” Cowell said. “You know what he truth is, when everyone asks who’s going to replace me, who’s going to be the next judge, the truth is, you guys are the judge of this show. And you’ve done an incredible job over the years … it’s been a blast.” And then he turned to Seacrest — his sparring partner of nine years — and, getting a bit choked up, said, “Even you … I’m going to honestly, honestly miss you.” As the show cut to commercial, Cowell smiled and waved to the crowd … it was genuinely touching. The end of an era. The beginning of the end. Both. Oh, and like, 20 minutes later, Lee DeWyze won. As if anyone cared. What did you think of the “Idol” farewell tribute to Simon? Inside ‘American Idol’ Finale, Fans Urge Simon Cowell: ‘Don’t Go!’

‘Idol’ alumni Michael Lynche, Megan Joy and Justin Guarini show up for judge’s penultimate show. By Kelley L. Carter Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox LOS ANGELES — The party got started long before the final “American Idol” performance show kicked off. “Idol” contestants from seasons past were right at home and accepted cheers and catcalling from the 7,000 fans inside the Nokia Theatre. About an hour before the show started, season-one runner-up Justin Guarini held court. The curly-haired singer was outside near the talent check-in, taking cell phone shots with fans, shaking hands and laughing with friends he called out to. Scott MacIntyre, the blind piano-playing contestant from season eight, was taken aback when the crowd whistled and applauded his arrival. Megan Joy — who got rid of the long, lush locks we remember from the same season — ran her fingers through her cropped blond ‘do and smiled when a fan complimented her on the new look as she tried to scurry to her seat before the lights went up and the show began. Oh, and she was barefoot! An ear-busting scream went out when Simon Cowell was introduced, especially when the crowd was reminded that this was his second-to-last day as an “Idol” judge . “You getting emotional already?” the warm-up comic asked a fan who was bawling during a commercial break. “It’s not even the results show!” Over another break, Michael “Big Mike” Lynche was razzed by the warm-up guy, who claimed the personal trainer/ singer was an over-exuberant Justin Bieber fan. “You had the Bieber fever,” he joked with Lynche “You couldn’t sleep the night before he performed here . OK, I need to be careful. You might crush me.” Host Ryan Seacrest cruised the aisles before the finalists’ second songs of the night, slapping high-fives with fans and holding hands with a show producer as they ran back down toward the stage. While the crowd’s signs are typically meant to cheer on the contestants, most of Tuesday night’s (May 25) posters were aimed at Cowell. “Please don’t go, Simon!” one sign read. Jack Johnson Previews New Songs From To the Sea At Free Concert

Johnson took the album title literally, performing for fans at Santa Monica’s famed pier. By Matt Elias Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News SANTA MONICA, California — Jack Johnson took fans to the sea (literally) on Monday night to celebrate the release of his aptly titled new album To the Sea . The free concert was given to show appreciation for fans who took part in a beach cleanup on Saturday in Santa Monica, which was organized by Southern California nonprofit Heal the Bay. Three thousand fans with free tickets covered a large portion of Santa Monica’s iconic pier for the show. An almost equal amount who weren’t able to score tickets lined the beach below with blankets (those blankets coming in very handy on the unseasonably cold night). Prior to the show, the crowd below was treated to a rare opportunity to hear the man of the night and his band’s soundcheck — thanks in part to the open-air stage. In between songs, the troubadour shouted out to those below, generating enthusiastic responses from the growing crowd. Following the soundcheck, Johnson told MTV News how special the rare pre-show audience was. “A lot of times in soundcheck, we end up just not playing a whole song because it’s just us and we’ve heard it enough times,” Johnson said. “But once there’s people listening — even if it’s 10 or 15 — we usually play a whole song because it’s just nicer to listen to. So this time we had what looks like a couple hundred people at least for a soundcheck. But it was fun. We just played a song that we’re not gonna play tonight — might as well use that one.” While fans might think it’s rare to catch Johnson in such an intimate setting, he continues to play smaller stages back home in Hawaii, mostly for his own nonprofit, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Usually in classroom settings, Johnson embraces the unpredictability of not having his road crew with him to set up a professional sound system (he says it’s usually “just me and the guitar”). And on the eve of the release of his fifth studio album, To the Sea (due June 1), the singer/songwriter shared his philosophy on playing new and for the most part never-heard-before songs during his set. “I think there will be a couple of the new songs, kind of finding that balance. Because I just know from being a music fan and going to shows as well, I like hearing some new stuff, but definitely want to hear a lot of the old ones that you already identify with,” Johnson said. True to his words, later that night Johnson sprinkled some new tunes in with his established crowd favorites. He and his band took the stage shortly after 8 p.m. and jumped right into the lead single from To the Sea, called “You and Your Heart.” Acknowledging a few missed chords, Johnson ended the song by saying, “The reason this show is free is because we haven’t played in a month.” The crowd chuckled with him and it set the tone for the loose and free-flowing show. “If I Had Eyes” was next, followed by the Curious George soundtrack song “Upside Down,” which drew a collective “Aww” from the crowd when Johnson dedicated it “to the little girl with the beanie on her head” who was hoisted on her dad’s shoulders. Next up were a series of pairings that Johnson and the band segued into without pausing. They followed “Flake” with the Steve Miller Band classic “The Joker.” “Do You Remember” went into “Bubbly Toes,” which drew a raucous sing-along on the “la da da da da da’s.” They ended the night’s pairings with the crowd favorite “Inaudible Melodies” and “Good People.” Some of the new songs that made it into the set were “To the Sea,” “From the Clouds,” and “At or With Me.” Highlights of the night included pianist Zach Gill’s efforts to keep the crowd warm by initiating an audience-wide pogo jump, bassist Merlo Podlewski’s rap on “Staple It Together,” and most of all, Johnson’s solo encore of “Better Together,” which brought a hush across the crowd, then a whispered sing-along of the tune. And there was no better way to end the night. Related Artists Jack Johnson

Chris Brown Plays To Packed House At Virginia Benefit Concert

‘Everyone has to do their part,’ singer said before show, which will provide aid to Haiti and to needy in Virginia. By Jayson Rodriguez Chris Brown performs at “Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action” benefit for continued relief in Haiti Photo: MTV News RICHMOND, Virginia — Chris Brown headlined the “Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action” benefit concert on Saturday night, and the superstar singer couldn’t have been more giving, doing his best to please the packed house. “Can I slow it down for the ladies?” Brown asked the shrieking audience, comprised mostly of females and local supporters. “I mean really slow it down.” With that, the energetic crooner jumped off the stage and walked through the crowd singing “Say Goodbye” to his fans, shaking as many adoring hands as he could along the way. “There’s never a right time to say goodbye,” he sang. “But we know that we got to go our separate ways.” Things at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center were just getting started, though. Brown ran through selections from all three of his albums, including early hits from his 2005 self-titled debut such as the chipper “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)” and “Gimme That.” T-Pain , who performed earlier in the night (as did Trey Songz , Keri Hilson , Mario , Tank and Ryan Leslie ) joined Brown for his guest spot on the booming “Kiss Kiss.” Brown, who celebrated his 21st birthday earlier this month, exercised his status as a more mature artist by bringing a young woman onstage with him. The fan, decked out in a snug dress, ditched her high heels and sat in a reclining chair on the stage as Brown serenaded her. The hometown Brown quickly transitioned into the steamy “Take You Down,” off Exclusive, removing his jean jacket (he was shirtless underneath) and straddling his guest for some enthusiastic dance moves that would have made Bobby Brown blush. The event was part of a charitable mission organized by Brown to help with continued relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating January earthquake. The singer partnered with the Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Central Virginia Food Bank and recruited a slew of hip-hop and R&B stars to help out. Lil Wayne prot
