‘This Woman’s Work’: Story Behind Michael Lynche’s ‘Idol’ Cover

Lynche sang Kate Bush’s 1989 song, which was later covered by Maxwell. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche on Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” judges often rail on contestants for not making the right song choices. But on Wednesday night, personal trainer and new dad Michael Lynche provided a textbook example of how to pick the perfect song. The 26-year-old Florida native, whose wife gave birth their firstborn while he was performing during the show’s Hollywood Week, moved judge Kara DioGuardi to tears with his sensitive take on British singer Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.” On a night when the judges criticized some singers for not connecting with the words they sang, Lynche astutely picked a song that mirrored the tumultuous changes in his personal life. The combination of Lynche’s velvety, gospelized vocals and the song’s connection to his life’s journey made for dramatic TV. DioGuardi felt the emotion, tearfully telling Lynche, “I’ve never cried after hearing something like that. It’s amazing. You were amazing. And it’s so relevant for you and I can feel it. It’s your life right now. It’s your respect for your wife, what you’ve gone through … and as a woman who doesn’t have a child, I can relate to it so much and it brought me to tears.” “This Woman’s Work” is one of Bush’s most beloved tunes, and the biggest commercial success from an artist who has always followed her peculiar muse. Bush’s career began in the late 1970s, when Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour turned label EMI on to the then-teenaged songwriting prodigy. In 1985, she released her most celebrated album, Hounds of Love . That album featured the hits “Running Up That Hill” and “Cloudbursting,” and it helped cement her reputation as an enigmatic pop poet. In 1988, Bush provided “This Woman’s Work” to director John Hughes for his coming-of-age drama “She’s Having a Baby.” The song, reportedly written specifically for the film, plays during a scene in which new father Kevin Bacon is pacing outside the delivery room where his wife is having their first child, fretting about the changes his family is about to face. Bush’s self-directed video for “Work” parallels the story of the film. The primly dressed singer, seated at a grand piano, plays the haunting melody, and shots of her are intercut with images of a nervous man in the waiting room of a hospital. A ghostly image of Bush stands behind the man and hugs him as he breaks into tears and stares ominously into the dark. A flashback then reveals Bush collapsing and being rushed to the hospital as the man wails in agony. At the end of the clip, a smiling nurse comes over to the man and puts her hand on his shoulder, appearing to give him good news as Bush quietly shuts the lid on the piano. “Work” later appeared on Bush’s 1989 album The Sensual World , which contained a number of tunes about the perils and pitfalls of love (“Love and Anger,” “Between a Man and a Woman”) and a title track inspired by Irish author James Joyce’s epic “Ulysses.” In the years that followed, the song underscored dramatic scenes in a number of TV shows (“Felicity,” “Alias,” “Party of Five”). In 1997, it was covered by Maxwell during his MTV Unplugged appearance. He later included a studio version of the track on his 2001 album Now , and it peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. Bush has rarely toured, and she took a lengthy break between her 1993 album The Red Shoes — which featured contributions from Prince, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton — and her 2005 double album Aerial to raise her family. Travis Barker, A-Trak Rock Hollywood Gig With Kid Cudi, Lil Jon

Duo played second-ever live show Wednesday night. By Kelly Marino Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak perform in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: MTV News/ Kelly Marino LOS ANGELES — On Wednesday night, Travis Barker and DJ A-Trak played their second-ever public show together — and although the set was quick, it did not disappoint, featuring guest spots from Lil Jon , Kid Cudi and Kid Sister . Travis Barker, DJ A-Trak Play Hollywood Performing in front of a sold-out crowd at Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre, the duo hit the ground running the minute they took to the stage. With a set that lasted a little under an hour, the duo treated fans to a medley of songs that included remixes by A-Trak (who also serves as Kanye West’s concert DJ), Barker’s own remixes and new material. Though there wasn’t any interaction with the fans, the crowd didn’t seem to mind. Instead they stood and watched in awe as Barker and A-Trak opened the show with Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and continued to please the crowd with remixes of Nas’ “Made You Look,” Kanye’s “Stronger” and Snoop Dogg’s “I Wanna Rock.” And just as the energy was peaking, fans were treated to a guest appearance by Lil Jon, who took to the stage with his signature sunglasses halfway into the set, performing his song “Outta Your Mind.” But as just as quickly as he appeared on the stage he was gone, teasing fans and leaving them wanting more. As the night went on Travis Barker and A-Trak continued to perform an array of tunes, adding a little more of a rock feel to the show with Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade,” Beastie Boys “Sabotage” and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll.” Each song lasted for only a few short minutes before spilling into the next. The set then transitioned into more dance-oriented material, with songs like Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up,” and Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock.” Not surprisingly, the set ended with a bang: opening act Kid Sister returned to the stage, with Barker playing drums and A Trak spinning behind her. Wearing ’80s-inspired attire, she pumped up the crowd with some booty-shaking moves while performing her hit “Pro Nails.” But when Kid Cudi took the stage, the crowd exploded. Performing “Pursuit of Happiness,” fans sang along at the top of their lungs while Cudi jumped around the entire stage, hi-five-ing fans lucky enough to be standing in front. The show ended just shy of midnight with DJ A Trak waving to the crowd thanking them and Travis Barker handing his drums sticks off to a screaming fan before walking off stage. As fans scattered to the exit doors, VIPs headed backstage — including Amber Rose sans Kanye West. Lil Wayne Joins Young Jeezy Onstage During Jay-Z’s NYC Show

Weezy, who was supposed to be sentenced to prison Tuesday, was also joined by Young Money’s Drake and Nicki Minaj. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Jay-Z has said that Madison Square Garden should be called “The House That Hovie Built,” but on Tuesday night (March 2), Young Jeezy was the one who startled the sold-out Blueprint 3 Tour crowd by pulling the trump card that tore the roof off. The Snowman called out Young Money artists Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as the label’s CEO, Lil Wayne. Jeezy came out about 45 minutes into Jay-Z’s set to perform “Real as It Gets.” Hov then turned the reins over to Jeezy, who threw out a few of his street-approved rhymes, like his verse on Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know.” Jeezy told the crowd that his friend Lil Wayne was supposed to go to jail that day , but a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing on weapons charges once again. Jeezy said he wanted to bring someone out to dedicate a record to him. Nicki Minaj then came out and did her verse from “Bedrock.” After the song, Jeezy told Nicki to stay, and the beat for “I’m Goin’ In” came on. Lil Wayne then emerged from the mini-stage where Jay’s Roc Boys band was playing and jumped on the main stage with Jeezy. The concertgoers — who were already on their feet — gave the New Orleans native a phenomenal response. Wayne’s face lit up as he rapped his verse. Drake then came out, breaking the night’s all-black dress code by wearing all white instead. The crowd gave Drizzy loud approval during his verse. Young Jeezy closed the song out, and all three men yelled the chorus: “I’m goin’ in, I’m goin’ in, and I’mma go hard!” “Jeezy, you a real n—a,” Wayne said, saluting the Snowman. “We with you 100 percent,” Young told Wayne. Jeezy told the fans to make some noise for Wayne and Young Money, which they were already doing. From there, the Atlanta rapper dug into his catalog with thumpers such as “Crazy World,” “Go Crazy” and “Go Getta.” Jeezy closed out his set by bringing out another guest, Akon, for “Soul Survivor.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne Jay-Z

Robert Pattinson Climbs A Tree With Jimmy Fallon

RPattz pokes fun at his own brooding image before promoting ‘Remember Me’ on ‘Late Night.’ By Gil Kaufman Robert Pattinson appears on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Monday Photo: NBC Jimmy Fallon is often found in a tree looking pale, pretending to be Robert Pattinson going on about the things that bother him in the world’s worst British accent. But on Monday night, Fallon had some company up in that lonely tree when the real RPattz climbed into “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” “The month of March,” Fallon emoted in his latest “Robert Is Bothered” skit. “Comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb. What the f— does that mean? Pick an animal and stick with it!” “Hey,” the “Twilight” star interrupted, his arms wrapped around a limb just behind Fallon, eyes narrowed in his signature fashion. “I don’t talk like that.” “How does it make you feel?” Jimmy countered. “I don’t know how it makes me feel, to be honest,” Pattinson said. “A little bit annoyed, a little bit frustrated …” “Something that starts with a ‘B,’ maybe?” Fallon persisted. “A little maybe bit broken,” Rob countered. “Close, but … does it bother your?” Fallon said. “Yeah, I’m bothered,” R. Pattz finally admitted to Fallon’s fist-pumping delight. The only thing that was louder than the scream that greeted the first glimpse of Pattinson in the tree was the sustained squeals from the studio audience when Fallon offered Pattinson the opportunity to shoot lasers out of his eyes as the actor sat down for a chat back in the studio. Mussing his signature bed-head thatch of hair, Pattinson seemed quite amused by the trick, expertly segueing into a chat about his new romantic film, “Remember Me.” Asked if he’s ever watched co-star Emilie de Ravin on “Lost,” Pattinson admitted that he watched half of the first episode and was so confused he had to bail. “It was already too much for me,” he sighed. Pattinson agreed with Fallon that Edward Cullen fans might be on board for “Remember Me” since it had a similar dramatic, dark vibe. “I hope so,” he said, as the crowd squealed in assent. Talking about the endless press he’s done for the “Twilight” series, RPattz said he was so terrified of going on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to talk about “New Moon” for the umpteenth time last year that he memorized every stock answer perfectly to avoid getting tripped up. “I prepared all my answers just before, and I was so comfortable as I walked in, every little nuance, every little mannerism was all planned out,” he said. But his responses to “Remember Me” questions have been much less planned out. “People ask me what the film’s about I’m like, ‘Pfftt,’ ” he laughed, joking about possibly being over prepared. Pattinson also talked about recently his older sister Lizzie’s music. When a Twitter question came in about whether the actor — who performed some music for the first “Twilight” soundtrack — might ever release an album, Pattinson raked his hands through his hair once more and smiled, “I don’t know.” He looked confused at first when a desperate-sounding plea rose up from the crowd and then realized that the ladies in the audience were repeatedly yelling, “Please!” Fallon then suggested an admittedly horrible idea, asking Pattinson if he might form a band with co-star Kristen Stewart called … wait for it … “the Twight Stripes.” “That sounds really, really bad,” Pattinson cringed. “That sounds like it means something …” Check out everything we’ve got on “Remember Me.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . John Mayer Swears: I’m Not an A–hole

He may use the most pejorative word possible when discussing African-Americans, and he may screw and tell , but John Mayer swears: he’s not an a$$hole. As he continues to try and make amends for his racist, homophobic interview with Playboy , the singer announced to the crowd at a NYC concert this week: “I hate to come off like an a–hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a–hole. Never, ever in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a–hole. But you know what? There’s plenty of a–holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” What? Even when he tries to apologize, he sounds like a moron. Plus, John, we never said you were an a–hole. We said you were a douchebag . Mayer added that “it’s a clean me now, people, clean me.” He then Tweeted to fans that attended his show, citing the bad weathe: “MSG crowd, will you tweet me when you get home safe? It’s bad out. Oh and HOLY SHNIKES. You were unreal tonight.” HOLY SHNIKES, indeed. Mayer is annoying.

‘It’s a clean me now, people, clean me,’ he tells Madison Square Garden crowd weeks after controversial Playboy comments. By Dana Kasser John Mayer performs at Madison Square Garden Thursday Photo: Alyssa Scheinson / Splash News NEW YORK — The fans at Madison Square Garden didn’t let a little snow keep them from John Mayer’s sold-out concert on Thursday night (February 25). Mayer has also had some adversity come his way over the past few weeks, after the backlash from his controversial comments in Playboy magazine . Mayer took a moment onstage to thank his fans for believing in him through the uproar. “I hate to come off like an a–hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a–hole,” he told the crowd. “Never, ever in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a–hole. But you know what? There’s plenty of a–holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” Mayer said he’s ready for a fresh start: “It’s a clean me now, people, clean me.” When Mayer wasn’t thanking his fans for braving the elements, he and his five-piece band were rocking out the stage to a set list of songs from his current album, Battle Studies, as well as hits from his past, including “Waiting on the World to Change” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” He even succumbed to a section of cheering fans calling out for him to perform “City Love” from his breakthrough 2001 album, Room for Squares. Even if the public isn’t convinced by his numerous apologies , Mayer had the Madison Square Garden concertgoers on their feet from show-opener “Heartbreak Warfare” to his encore — snow boots and all. The singer/songwriter even checked in with the crowd on Twitter after the show: “MSG crowd, will you tweet me when you get home safe? It’s bad out. Oh and HOLY SHNIKES. You were unreal tonight.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: John Mayer Related Artists John Mayer
