Tom Cruise Talks ‘Top Gun 2’: ‘We’re Working On It’

‘I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,’ Cruise tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News “We’re working on it.” That’s the official word on “Top Gun 2,” straight from the star himself, Tom Cruise , who spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz during an event in Dubai for In the fourth “M:I” movie, Cruise returns as castoff secret agent Ethan Hunt — the only character he has ever revisited during his decades-long career. The question remains: Will he ever don the Navy jumpsuit again and hop into a cockpit as Maverick? A little more than a year ago, the Internet went abuzz with rumors about Cruise, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer reuniting for a potential “Top Gun” sequel. Scott confirmed he would be directing , but Cruise’s involvement remained a mystery. When Christopher McQuarrie, the writer of “The Usual Suspects” and the man hired to pen the script for “Top Gun 2,” said Maverick would be the lead for the follow-up, all engines seemed go. But then things went quiet. As the major players moved on to other projects — including “One Shot,” directed by McQuarrie and starring Cruise — sequel talk died down. When Horowitz sat down with Cruise in Dubai, the actor updated the project’s status and shed new light on the script. “I don’t think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it,” Cruise said. “Chris is directing ‘One Shot’ right now, which I’m acting. We’ve got to go back in January and finish it.” With McQuarrie out, that leaves Cruise, Scott and Bruckheimer as the only major players left with the project, but Cruise insists he could still do a sequel. “I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven’t made a film since ‘Days of Thunder,’ ” Cruise said. “Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, ‘Wow, that would be … what we could do now.’ ” For Cruise, the two key elements to a sequel would be a worthy script and the freedom to make the movie as they did in 1986. “I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,” he said. “If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot ‘Top Gun.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Mark Five-Year Anniversary!

In the spring of 2005, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes met. They hit it off immediately and began a whirlwind romance, which many people felt was a publicity stunt. Many people are eating serious helpings of crow now. Their first date was said to be a sushi dinner aboard Tom’s private plane and later that month, they were exclusive. By April of 2006, they had a daughter, Suri. Then in November 18 of that year, TomKat became lovingly joined in matrimony. Yep, today’s there five-year anniversary. That’s like 25 in Hollywood years! Tom Cruise takes a lot of flack for being kind of out there in his own world, but let’s face it, he and Katie are not only harmless, but a model relationship in many ways. We don’t know them personally, but neither goes out of their way to seek attention and both seem like attentive parents and spouses. Quirky, maybe, but who’s not? With so much coverage devoted to Kim Kardashian and Ashton Kutcher , it’s nice to see a marriage working out, isn’t it? Granted, it’s his third. But they try! Hard! It seems like forever ago that Cruise, who’s now filming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , was jumping on couches and warring with Matt Lauer like a loon. We kinda miss those days, but we’re glad he’s happier and mellower with Katie these days. Happy anniversary, TomKat, and happy weekend, THG readers … Tom Cruise Jumps on Oprah’s Couch

Big Boi Avoids Jail Time In Florida Drug Case

See more here:

ATL rap legend Big Boi has reached a deal on Florida drug charges that allows him to avoid jail time. The Associated Press reports that the OutKast rapper appeared in a Miami courtroom today as prosecutors outlined the deal. Big Boi (born Antwan Patton) will have to undergo three months of drug testing, perform community service and pay $2,000 in donations to charities. As we previously reported, Big Boi was arrested getting off a cruise ship in August after police discovered the rapper was carrying ecstasy, a cigarette roller with marijuana residue and the ecstasy ingredient MDMA. Big Boi had faced two felony drug charges. If he remains drug-free after three months of testing, those charges will be dismissed. Read more here. Latest Look at Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol Recalls Banana Republic Ad

The last time Paramount released a still photo from Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , it was that Eminem-y shot of Emo Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) wearing a hoodie. Fashion faux pas, Mr. Hunt! Thankfully, this new still — which features Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg — is a bit better. Seems like the IMF team stopped shopping at Hot Topic and found Banana Republic at the other end of the mall. Click through for a look.

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer: An Expert Analysis

We break down the first sneak peek of Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission.’ By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount The first “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” trailer begins in classic fashion for this epic spy franchise: with a ridiculously destructive explosion. It’s been almost six years, after all, since the previous installment hit theaters, and so this new footage, which popped up online Tuesday evening, delivers the fiery goods early and often. Hit play on the embedded video as we walk through some of the key moments in the trailer, then read on for a deeper exploration of what’s going on in the “Ghost Protocol” footage. The J.J. Abrams Conspiracy Early on, as Tom Wilkinson explains the unachievable mission Tom Cruise and his team will confront, we see Wilkinson flip through a series of digital profiles of the IMF agents. Josh Holloway’s character, it seems, is “disavowed.” Now if you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll remember that in the third film, Keri Russell (a veteran of producer J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity”) is killed surprisingly early in the action. Our working theory is that we’re in for a similar treat for Holloway, who starred in Abrams’ “Lost.” We don’t see a lot of him in the rest of the trailer, and when you do see him, he’s usually alone. All signs point to Holloway getting an unfortunate, and quite possibly bloody, exit in “Ghost Protocol.” The Brad Bird Comparison Midway through the trailer, we get a moment that clearly harkens back to the first “M:I” movie. As Jeremy Renner flies down into a silo-like structure and the camera follows him from above, we can’t help but think of the moment in the original film in which Cruise, secured via harness, swooped down into a secure CIA facility. While J.J. Abrams has told us “Ghost Protocol” will carry the unmistakable signature of director Brad Bird , who is making his live-action debut after animated fare like “The Incredibles,” it’s hard to see any Birdian touches here. This looks like a “Mission” movie, not a Brad Bird one. And we wonder if, in the finished film, that will still be the case. One of Bird’s signature stylistic traits is action (and interactions) infused with humor, and “M:I” is hardly a franchise that goes for laughs. The Tom Cruise Marathon It would not be a Tom Cruise movie, let alone a “Mission” movie, without a shot of the action star running like the wind. There’s a hilarious YouTube video about this, which is definitely worth watching. But all jokes aside, let’s give Cruise some serious credit: We tend to take him for granted, but the guy is almost 50 years old, and here he’s running, jumping, diving and nearly dying. That’s impressive stuff. The Jeremy Renner Possibility Renner, of “Hurt Locker” fame, is a new face in the franchise; last year, he told MTV News he was being groomed to take over the franchise from Cruise . But that’s not at all the sense we get from the trailer, especially when Cruise suggests Renner is hiding something. First off, Renner is reportedly the front-runner to take over the “Bourne” franchise from Matt Damon, and it’d be odd to have the guy be the face of two separate spy series. And second, based on some of the dialogue in the trailer, there just might be a twist with Renner’s character in “Ghost Protocol.” Is he a villain? Is the trailer just trying to throw us for a loop? Can we possibly have a “Mission” movie in the future that doesn’t feature Cruise himself? The IMAX Grandeur The trailer wraps up with an epic scene in which Tom Cruise scales the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. This scene is compelling for two reasons. One, it was shot with IMAX cameras, and for all the technical mumbo-jumbo you can get into when talking about this technology, the fact is that watching something shot in IMAX delivers a singularly breathtaking visual scope. “Ghost Protocol” will be worth seeing in an IMAX theater just for this scene. And second, Cruise clearly stole the gloves he wore in “Minority Report” to scale this building, “Spider-Man”-style. Hey, can you blame a guy for trying to sneak a swarm of blockbusters into one film? ‘Mission: Impossible 4’ Is ‘Intense,’ Katie Holmes Says

Mrs. Tom Cruise says ‘Ghost Protocol’ is ‘the best ‘Mission’ yet.’ By Kara Warner Katie Homes & Guillermo Del Toro Photo: MTV News While we’ve been awaiting an official trailer for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” — which is said to drop in front of this week’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” — a French version leaked online Monday (June 27), and reportedly contains plenty of expected shots of Tom Cruise involved in crazy action sequences as super-spy Ethan Hunt. Since we have yet to see the trailer or any footage ourselves, when MTV News caught up with Cruise’s better half, Katie Holmes, Monday during the press day for “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” we asked if she’s seen any of the film yet. “I have. I had an advanced screening,” she said with a laugh, adding that it’s a perk of being married to the film’s star. As for her thoughts about Cruise’s death-defying stunts in the film, particularly those he performed atop Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building), Holmes turned the question over to Guillermo del Toro, who produced “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” “What did you think, Guillermo, about the Burj?” she asked him. “I love it!” he said, at which point they both agreed that Cruise’s stunts were scarier than their film, which revolves around the demonic activities of a group of terrifying little creatures that seek out and kill humans, particularly children. “It’s amazing,” Holmes continued. “The movie is going to be very cool and intense and the best ‘Mission’ yet.” The actress also mentioned that she’d be game for a role that required a few crazy stunts herself. “I think it sounds fun,” she said. Del Toro then chimed in with his own “Mission: Impossible Diaries,” so to speak: “I live ‘Mission: Impossible.’ It’s what I call my diet,” he joked, and then proceeded to hum the “Mission: Impossible” theme song, while miming his insatiable appetite, making Holmes burst out laughing. Holmes weighed-in: “I have a lot of ‘Mission: Impossible’ moments, just being a mom.” Del Toro agreed: “Yes, coping with the home front.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
