5 Potential Theme Nights That Would Suit Every Remaining American Idol Contestant

American Idol ‘s theme weeks this season have unevenly suited the contestants. Rolling Stones week is an obvious fit for Lee DeWyze, but a weak choice for then-eliminated Lacey Brown. Shania Twain week (tonight’s episode) is the first theme to ever come close to suiting Aaron Kelly, while Michael Lynche is already preparing his “Goodbye, America” speech. It’s time for a change. Here are five themes that don’t skew towards one particular contestant — and don’t worry, I’ve done the heavy lifting and chosen songs for each singer. Caution: Kid Rock, Salt-N-Pepa, and major DioGuardi props ahead!

He’s the nicest guy in the world. And then you start thinking about your own mortality. You start thinking, Oh my God. It just makes you appreciate how lucky we all are.” “Celebrity Apprentice” boss Donald Trump appeared Tuesday morning (April 27) on “Today,” where he called Michaels a “competitor” who worked “maybe harder than anybody else.” “Apprentice” co-star and professional wrestler Bill Goldberg told RadarOnline.com , “I just spoke with Bret the day before he got sick, and I told him he had to slow down with his lifestyle. He was playing with his daughters in Arizona and was in really good spirits when we talked. I just hope that he can pull through from this and it acts as a wake-up call for him.” Michaels’ official Facebook page , meanwhile, continues to be a venue in which fans can share information and messages of support for the 47-year-old rocker. “Bret, I just wanted to say that I think you’re a wonderful, talented and sweet person,” wrote Elizabeth Ann Piotrowski. “I have two friends who pulled through similar situations, and I know you will too. Crystal Bowersox Scoring Hometown Radio Play With ‘Holy Toledo’

Local radio station began playing ‘American Idol’ frontrunner’s song last week By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX There’s still a month left to go on “American Idol,” but frontrunner Crystal Bowersox is already reaping the benefits of a winner. As of last week, Bowersox could be heard twice a day on the radio on Toledo, Ohio’s 101.5-FM , which is located near her hometown of Elliston, Ohio, crooning the original acoustic folk ballad “Holy Toledo.” Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “We have Crystal pride around here,” said Tom Cook, the station’s program director. “It’s not just a radio thing, it’s a cool thing for the people around here to see someone with that kind of talent on a national platform.” While assembling a Bowersox video page copy of Crystal’s performances from the show, someone at the rock station noticed the homage to the singer’s hometown and brought it to Cook’s attention. “I thought, ‘It’s not just a great song, but it mentions our city!’,” he said about the contemplative tune. After dubbing the song from a YouTube video, Cook put it into rotation on May 20 and it’s been getting around 15 spins a week since then. So far, he said the station has gotten a number of curious calls about the tune, but no contact from any of the half dozen or more Bowersox family members who live in the area. “I hope they feel good about it,” said Cook. “From her perspective I would think it would be cool to have a radio station in your hometown playing your song.” Though no other stations have picked up the song as far as he knows, “Holy Toledo” has gotten enough spins to make to it to #90 on the “American Idol” airplay chart, according to USA Today , making MamaSox the only one of this year’s contestants to crash the chart. ‘American Idol’ Fave Crystal Bowersox Was ‘Never Angry’ With Ryan Seacrest

Bowersox says she didn’t threaten to quit the show. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Despite the drama surrounding her alleged attempt to quit the show, Crystal Bowersox said she is not mad at “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest for talking to the press about her moment of doubt. Bowersox told People magazine that despite reports to the contrary, she doesn’t hold a grudge against the sometimes excitable host for spilling the beans about a conversation they had in the “Idol” parking lot a few weeks ago. “We were never angry with each other. We had a conversation. He gave me good advice, and I highly respect him,” said Bowersox, who confirmed that there is “no beef” between her and Seacrest. She also threw water on speculation that the conversation was a result of her contemplating leaving the show, on which she is the undisputed front-runner. “No,” was her simple answer to a question about whether he talked her down from quitting. Bowersox also explained why she had such an emotional reaction on Tuesday night when she sang “People Get Ready,” a performance that was instantly tagged as one of the best of the season , if not the history of the show. “I looked up and saw the mirror of the sunglasses my dad brought because he was trying to hide it if he cried,” Bowersox explained of the sight that brought her to tears before she finished her song. “And was like, ‘I know he’s crying.’ ” After breaking down onstage during her performance, Sox explained to Seacrest that seeing her dad in the audience for the first time had made her very emotional. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The Boot For Casey James Or Aaron Kelly

Despite shaky performances, Tim Urban and Michael Lynche should be safe. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: Fox The theme on Tuesday night’s “American Idol” was inspirational songs, but with the exception of Crystal Bowersox’s tearful “People Get Ready,” many of the night’s performances were uninspired at best. While that might make picking who could be eliminated during Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” charity extravaganza harder, for MTV News’ “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello , the choice is clear. ” ‘Jealous Guy’ notwithstanding, Casey James’ performances have all been the same thing over and over again,” Cantiello said of the pony-tailed Texas guitar slinger, who has carved out a blues-rock niche on the show. “It was only a matter of time before America grew impatient with his lack of growth. Furthermore, it was a night that was supposed to inspire, and thanks to passionate performances from Lee Dewyze and especially Crystal Bowersox it definitely did uplift the spirit at times, but Casey left me stone-cold.” Cantiello said he didn’t have a visceral reaction to James’ cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” the way he did to equally shaky performances from Tim Urban and Aaron Kelly, who he also predicted would land in the bottom three alongside James. “It’s never a good thing to go first and deliver a forgettable sound-alike performance,” he said of James. “But what tipped me off to Casey’s impending departure? The crowd didn’t boo Kara, Randy or Ellen when they panned his performance. You could hear a pin drop. Casey had obviously put the entire studio audience to sleep.” The view was a bit cloudier for MJ Santilli, founder of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . She thought “Teflon” Tim Urban got ambitious with his cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days,” which got universal pans from the judge’s panel for failing to live up to his more solid performances over the past two weeks. “But I still think he’s amassed enough of a following to keep him safe this week,” she said, adding that she thinks Michael Lynche “is probably not long for this world, but he performed near the end of the lineup, and when Simon Cowell makes statements like ‘You’ll probably still be here next week,’ they usually come true.” And while she found James to be “safe and boring,” she thought his fan base was strong enough to keep him in it, so it was perennially on-the-bubble teen Aaron Kelly who she targeted as this week’s boot-ee. “[He’s] been on the cusp the past couple of weeks,” she noted of the sometimes awkward high schooler, who failed to deliver sufficient emotion on his take of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” “Once again, he bit off more than he could chew last night. And even though he gave it a good try, it was a mediocre vocal and an awkward performance. I think he’ll be heading back to smalltown Pennsylvania very soon.” One things is for sure, MJ said: After coming close to seriously turning off “Idol” hardcores with news that she was on the verge of quitting the show, Bowersox’s bravura performance brought her all the way back into their good graces. “She came back with a fantastic performance, showed some vulnerability — finally — and even, wordlessly made amends with Seacrest,” said MJ. “Honestly, she’s going to be hard to beat at this point. And it’s not as if any one of the remaining seven comes close to her talent, confidence, and performance skills.” What do you think of our experts’ predictions? Do you agree? Disagree? American Idol Performance of the Season: Crystal Bowersox, "People Get Ready"

It started a capella – and it ended with as much praise as an American Idol contestant has received in years. Forget the judges for a moment. Check out what a group of impartial observers had to say about Crystal Bowersox’s rendition of “People Get Ready” last night , which brought the singer to such tears that she could scarcely finish. MTV.com : “It was the best performance of the season.” Salon.com : “Forget about goose bumps! I had been filled with the Holy Spirit and was jumping up and down in my humble living room screaming, ‘Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Alleluia, Alleluia!’ I became a born-again believer that “American Idol” could actually be redeemed, saved from its lost and depraved ways by its savior, Crystal Bowersox .” GQ.com : “As frontrunner skeptics, it took Bowersox’s near collapse into heavy sobbing to finally convince us that her season-long steely calm was not professionalism, but rather a coping device. Despite the crumbling reputation, this is still a big deal, this American Idol show. Crystal seems to know that now.” DID YOU MISS THE PERFORMANCE? OR CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH IT AGAIN? SEE BELOW. Crystal Bowersox, A Juice Bar And Why She May Still Quit ‘American Idol’

Our Bigger Than the Sound writer met quite a few Crystals during his juice-bar days. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage Long before the parking-lot incident, the Seacrest intervention and reported texted accusations of betrayal , I already kind of knew that Crystal Bowersox wanted out of “American Idol.” This had nothing to do with any conversations I’ve had with her, tips from “inside sources” or anything else that could generally be considered reliable (because I don’t have anything like that to back me up) and everything to do with the fact that I once worked at a hippie-dippy juice bar in Altamonte Springs, Florida, that has since closed down and is now a Firehouse Subs. I know from experience, dude. Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience See, during my time at said juice bar — it was called “Nectars,” btw — I worked with no less than a dozen girls exactly like Crystal Bowersox. They all played the acoustic guitar. They all wore those velvety blouses. They all hung dream catchers from the rearview mirrors of their cars. Most of them had dreadlocks. They were drawn to the place because, like them, it was real earthy, with vegan sandwiches and wheatgrass shots and hummus and lots and lots of bean sprouts. Like, we put bean sprouts in everything. It was the kind of place where a group of dudes would hollow out apples, disappear into the walk-in refrigerator for 10 minutes, emerge all glassy eyed and would then have to take a break from manning the sandwich press (a lot of them remind me of Jason Castro , actually). It was a pretty awesome job, now that I think of it. Anyway, aside from all the crunchy trappings, all these girls had something else in common: They were all really good at their jobs (probably because they worked with a bunch of dudes whose sole talent seemed to be making smoking devices out of fruit), which meant that, inevitably, they would outshine everyone else and get promoted to manager. And that’s where the real problems would start. See, they never wanted any of the duties that came with the position of manager. Overnight, they went from working the register and making the occasional echinacea-laced smoothie to having to run the entire shop. They had to make schedules. Had to beg the stoned dudes in back to do food prep (and no one ever wants to do food prep). They couldn’t even make their own custom juices any more, because now the owner was watching their every move. Suddenly, this cushy, laid-back job they had gotten through a friend (because all of them got the job through a friend) had become a full-time gig, one with actual responsibilities. And responsibilities are a bummer. So, inevitably, all of them would quit. It wasn’t worth it anymore. And so that’s why I knew Crystal Bowersox wanted to quit “American Idol.” She entered the competition almost on a whim — hey, this seems like it would be fun! — but then, thanks to her talents, she rose above the field and somehow became the front-runner. Without even knowing it, she has become the manager. Having to film those Ford commercials is her schedule-making. Doing the group sing-alongs is like begging the rest of the crew to cut a few extra boxes of broccoli. Bringing out a didgeridoo for her version of “Come Together” was sort of her last-ditch attempt at making one of her custom juices, only the judges totally called her out on it this time. “Idol” has become a full-time job for her. So it was no surprise to me that she thought about quitting. After all, it sort of seemed like the only logical thing to do. And, yes, I’m aware that this entire column is one long generalization, but writing about “Idol” usually requires that sort of thing (here’s a column last year in which I compared Adam Lambert to Barack Obama ). The beauty of this show is that, if you think about it long enough, you’ll realize you know someone exactly like each of the contestants. It’s sort of why we keep them around every week. I just so happen to know at least a dozen girls like Bowersox, which is why nothing she does really shocks me. I just hope she doesn’t freak out and flip off the audience, like this one gal I worked with did when she quit (only it was the customers, but you know what I’m saying). Though, come to think of it, that wouldn’t surprise me, either. And, ultimately, Bowersox’s future on “Idol” isn’t really that big of a deal. Because if she does decide to walk away from the show, I’m confident she could have a lucrative career in the juice-bar business. I know from experience, dude. Questions? Concerns?
