Crystal Bowersox: From Chicago Hopeful To ‘American Idol’ Front-Runner

MamaSox has had her ups and downs, but the season-nine crown seems to be hers to lose. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX As Crystal Bowersox heads into inspirational-songs week on “American Idol,” she’s the one contestant who seems to be rousing positive energy from viewers in the midst of this season of unexceptional singers and humdrum personalities. The “Idol” audience embraced the 24-year-old mother — MamaSox, as she is now known — once she become a crooner-to-watch in Hollywood and has stuck with her through illness, controversy and some killer performances. We first met Bowersox during the auditions in Chicago , the city that also gave us Katelyn Epperly and Lee Dewyze. Dressed in jeans and a suede vest with her guitar strapped to her side, Bowersox sang “Piece of My Heart,” a tune made famous by Janis Joplin. Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “Why did you wear a guitar?” guest judge Shania Twain asked before Bowersox began. “It’s kind of a comfort blanket for me,” she answered, launching into a soulful take on the tune that had Simon Cowell smiling and Kara DioGuardi welcoming her to Hollywood Week. During her brief time onscreen, we didn’t find out much about her. She was ID’d onscreen as a “musician/mom” and walked away from the audition with her young son in one hand and her golden ticket in the other. The contestant who people were talking about most the next day was Katelyn Epperly, and there was little indication that Crystal would soon become the show’s top seed. If anything, she reminded us of season six’s Tami Gosnell, a free spirit with blues in her soul who soared in her audition but was booted in Hollywood Week. Bowersox would not suffer the same fate. To begin, her rock- and soul-flecked rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” had her fellow contestants singing backup vocals from their auditorium seats. While Andrew Garcia’s breakout take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” had everybody talking, we still anointed MamaSox as an early front-runner . To finish off her time in Hollywood, Crystal nailed her cover of Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy.” “I feel like I can surprise all of you,” she told the judges as they welcomed her into the top 24. “I’m very glad I came.” Bowersox got off to an unremarkable start during the live shows with a harmonica-assisted take on “Hand in My Pocket.” Cowell accused her of sounding like a subway busker. The next week, an illness forced her into the hospital , and her place on the show suddenly became uncertain. Would she recover enough to perform, or would this be the end of Crystal’s run? It turned out to be just the beginning. After a last-minute switch between the men and women’s performances, Bowersox once again took the stage and delivered a beauty: a gospel-tinged version of “As Long as I Can See the Light.” “I feel good,” she said. “I’m a tough cookie.” Did that cookie almost crumble at one point? Later on in the season, during a post-performance chat with the judges, she admitted that she’d been dealing with personal issues. Then last week, Ryan Seacrest said Bowersox was about to quit the show until he talked her out of it. But Bowersox appeared to hit back against that report when she tweeted , “Media is a funny thing. Stretched and skewed and far from the truth.” What actually happened? We’ll likely have to wait until season’s end to get the real story. By that point, will America have crowned Bowersox as season nine’s champ? All signs are pointing in that direction, but one never knows when it comes to the allegiances of the voting public. For every front-runner who wins, like season four’s Carrie Underwood, there’s a Melinda Doolittle, who seemed set to run away with season six until ultimately placing third. Crystal Bowersox Confirms "Moment of Doubt," Near Idol Departure

She’s the clear season nine favorite on American Idol , but Crystal Bowersox has never looked comfortable on stage. The folksy singer admitted many months ago that she had never watched an episode of Idol , and she’s been outwardly shaken up when certain contestants – such as Lilly Scott and Katie Stevens – were eliminated this year. Therefore, it didn’t come as a major shock this week when a report leaked out that said Bowersox was close to quitting the competition, but was convinced to stay by Ryan Seacrest. On Facebook yesterday, Crystal confirmed this rumor, writing: We all have moments of doubt. As much as I miss my kid, the big picture is this: im doing this for him and my fans. I’m having the time of my life! Sounds like Bowersox will be sticking around – and thank goodness for that. On the most lackluster season to date, we don’t even want to imagine tuning in to Idol each week and not at least having Crystal to look forward to.

‘Glee’ Premiere Recap: The Gleeks Say ‘Hell-O’

The hit show returns with a few surprises. Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele in Tuesday’s “Glee” Photo: Carin Baer/ Fox Ladies and gentlemen, “Glee” is back . And with it, the seemingly impossible task of living up to the already sky-high levels of hype leveled upon it during the show’s ultra-long hiatus. Well, you can rest easy knowing that in “Hell-O,” creator Ryan Murphy and his writers crafted a well-paced, clever episode of their Golden Globe-winning comedy that culminated in a musical number set to the Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye.” What’s changed at McKinley High since New Directions won regionals in December? Well, although Kurt, Mercedes and Rachel had hoped everything would be different, three slurpees to the face on their first day back proved otherwise. Sue Sylvester regained control of the Cheerios, thanks to a well-timed roofie that allowed her to take some very compromising photos of her in bed with Principal Figgins. (The track suit stayed on.) There were a few modifications to the school’s social hierarchy: The end of football season meant Finn’s now a basketball star. Puck started dating Quinn even though she was getting fat (“I’m pregnant,” she helpfully tried to explain). And thanks to Rachel’s take-charge attitude (and a cat-themed relationship calendar), the Finn/Rachel romance was now official. To her, at least. Sue enlisted Cheerio spies Brittany and Santana to help wreak havoc on New Directions by getting Finn to dump his new girlfriend. Since he was in the middle of a post-being-cheated-on life crisis (which he worked through by singing the Doors’ “Hello, I Love You”), he was eager to drop his domineering new girlfriend (who expressed her rage via the All-American Rejects’ “Give You Hell”) when Brittany and Santana asked him on a date. With both of them. It didn’t really go as Finn imagined, however, when the ladies spent the date gossiping about him as he sat on the other side of the restaurant booth. He realized his mistake and tried to get Rachel back, but it was too late — she’d already met someone else. Vocal Adrenaline star Jesse St. James, played by Lea Michele’s “Spring Awakening” co-star Jonathan Groff, picked Rachel up as she perused Lionel Richie sheet music at a local store. The hilariously cocky senior (“This is one of my favorite haunts. I like to come and flip through the celebrity biographies, pick up some lifestyle tips”) wooed Rachel with a duet on “Hello,” then asked her out. The rest of New Directions forced Rachel to break up with Jesse (thanks to another Sue Sylvester scheme) — but she couldn’t do it, and decided to date him in secret (Sue strikes again: “I am engorged with venom, and triumph”). When they sealed their new relationship with a kiss under the heat of Vocal Adrenaline’s 10-times-more-powerful-than-normal spotlight (sunscreen is required for use), VA’s director looked on with a knowing smile. While it’s unclear whether Shelby Corcoran, played by Broadway star Idina Menzel, truly was in on a nefarious plan to infiltrate New Directions, she embarked on her own McKinley affair when Mr. Schuester came to speak to her (as Vocal Adrenaline sang AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”), only to wind up making out on his couch. Though she told him to call her back when he figured out what he wanted in a relationship, it was great to meet Will Schuester the player — finally, another side of the perpetual nice guy. The other women in Mr. Schu’s tangled romantic web, Terri and Emma, had a showdown when Terri stopped by to pick up her Bruckheimer DVDs as Emma prepared a surprise romantic dinner. While Emma thought “Hello” from “The Jazz Singer” was her and Will’s song, Terri informed the guidance counselor that it was her and Will’s junior prom theme, which Emma verified in that year’s Thunderclap yearbook. This revelation, combined with Emma’s admission that she’d never been intimate with anyone, ever, led her to give Will the same “Call me when you figure yourself out” message as Shelby. Judging the Judges’ Save on American Idol: Did Justice Prevail?

Hooray! Not so much? This week, American Idol ‘s voters grew a pair and almost eliminated a dude . But before that pig could fly, the judges whipped out a pocket veto and fired it square at the showstopping vest of Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, who sang a decent “Eleanor Rigby” this week and still scored the lowest number of votes. The new father Lynche, whose wife enjoyed a very famous cervix during Hollywood Week, lives to meet mentor Adam Lambert . Are we happy for Big Mike’s triumph?

Didgeridoo Helps Crystal Bowersox Spice Up ‘Come Together’ On ‘Idol’

Addition of Australian pipe instrument made for night’s most eyebrow-raising moment. By Kyle Anderson Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s slightly surreal episode of “American Idol” featured a handful of eyebrow-raising moments. As the top nine contestants dipped into the Lennon/McCartney song catalog, we saw Lee Dewyze bring out a bagpiper during “Hey Jude,” Tim Urban turn “All My Loving” into a rockabilly shuffle and Michael Lynche spin “Eleanor Rigby” into a revivalist meeting. But the evening’s most head-scratching moment once again came courtesy of Crystal Bowersox, whose surprisingly middling version of “Come Together” was rescued by the bizarre addition of a didgeridoo in the arrangement. The didgeridoo (sometimes spelled “didjeridu” or referred to as simply “didge” or “didj”) is a traditional Australian pipe instrument that is little more than a hollowed-out cylinder of wood. When played, it emits a low droning tone that is meant to evoke the mysteries of nature (according to Aboriginal Australian tradition). The simple tones are used to accompany ceremonial dancing and singing, though the instrument can also be played for recreational purposes. Skilled didgeridoo playing requires mastery of circular breathing in order to make a continuous sound. Anthropologists are unsure just how old the didgeridoo is, but archeological evidence says that it could have been around as long as 1,500 years ago. Though primarily used in Australia, the didgeridoo has found its way into traditional Celtic music, trippier versions of electronic dance (Aphex Twin’s Didgeridoo EP explores the relationship between trance and the didgeridoo) and certain forms of jazz. It even makes occasional appearances in pop music, most notably in Australian superstar Xavier Rudd’s crossover tracks, which earned him touring spots with the likes of Jack Johnson and G. Love and Special Sauce. What did you think of Crystal Bowersox’s use of the didgeridoo? Did it add to her performance or was it distracting? Let us know in the comments! American Idol Recap: Who Drove Us to Beatlemania?

Up is down! Right is wrong! You say goodbye, I say hello. Everything’s different now in Idol Isle, and the Top 9 rankings are almost reversed thanks this week’s performances from the Lennon/McCartney songbook. Everything you thought you knew about Crystal Bowersox’s lock on #1 — or Tim Urban’s lock on #Infinity — has been destroyed. Your onetime love of Ellen DeGeneres is but an ember flickering in Kara DioGuardi’s snowman stare. It’s the kind of chaos that makes us scream “Get back to where you once belonged!” right at the Benami-less TV. After the jump, this week’s topsy-turvy rankings.
