Matt Damon Says Future Of ‘Bourne’ Franchise Is Uncertain

‘We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,’ the star says of studio’s desire to re-cast Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Ultimatum” Photo: Jasin Boland/ Universal Studios Earlier this year, fans of the highly successful “Bourne” franchise got some surprising news when Universal announced its plans to make “The Bourne Legacy” with or without star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass. Then in October, the studio announced the next installment would be written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who penned the first three “Bourne” films. MTV News caught up with Damon during promotion for his awards-favorite “True Grit,” and asked the actor whether he’d talked to Gilroy about plans for the next chapter. “I have no idea what he has planned,” Damon said of Gilroy. “But he’s a very smart guy, so I’m sure it’s going to be good. I do know that whatever he’s doing won’t preclude Paul [Greengrass] and I from coming back and doing ours,” he added. (It’s still unclear whether Damon and Greengrass will return.) Damon explained that what Universal wants to do with the films is build a lasting franchise — one in which other actors besides Damon can step into the lead role. Of course, Damon and Greengrass aren’t exactly onboard with that idea. “What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,” Damon said. “You can’t send him on a mission. There’s character development, there’s an arc that the character has traveled through the three movies. You don’t just start over at the beginning of every movie,” he continued. “So I think what they’re looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually.” Earlier this year, Damon said he would consider stepping into Bourne’s shoes again, but only if the picture was helmed by Greengrass. “I love the character. I love the stories,” Damon said . “But only if Paul Greengrass says he will direct again. So far, though, he’s decided not to. I’d definitely say yes if he went for it. I know he would have a great story, and it would protect the legacy of what we created.” What do you think about a “Bourne” movie without Matt Damon? Who should play Jason Bourne? Tricky Stewart Defends New Michael Jackson Tune, ‘Keep Your Head’

‘This was a record that [MJ] wrote and that he produced. And I just got in there,’ the producer maintains. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by James Lacsina Tricky Stewart Photo: MTV News While detractors of Michael Jackson’s Michael album cry foul over the unfinished material that makes up the bulk of the posthumous project, producer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart is insisting that his contribution to the release was material MJ put together — and finished — himself. In the case of “Keep Your Head Up,” one of the album’s biggest standouts, Stewart told MTV News that the track was not a remake of any kind. Rather, he just added minor additional production flourishes to the number. “The main thing I wanted to do was make sure that Michael would like it,” said Stewart, who has worked with Beyonc

Stephen Colbert, Drake, Lil Wayne Have 2010’s Top Retweeted Tweets

Gulf oil spill, World Cup, VMAs and Justin Bieber among the top trends of the year on Twitter and Facebook. By Gil Kaufman Stephen Colbert Photo: Scott Wintrow/ Getty Images Not only were people riveted by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this year; they also couldn’t resist sharing some wry humor on the matter. That’s why Stephen Colbert’s 140-character comment about the matter was Twitter’s Top Retweeted Tweet of 2010 . “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles,’ ” read the post, that earned the comedian a Golden Tweet award on “The Colbert Report” Tuesday night. Much of the top 10 Retweeted Tweets were from musicians: Drake (#2), Lil Wayne (#3), Justin Bieber (#4), Joe Jonas (#6), Lady Gaga (#7), Kanye West (#8) and Rihanna (#9). A post from spoof account @alqueda was #5, and an ironically uplifting piece of advice from @sh–mydadsays made the list at #10. Earlier this week, Twitter and Facebook released their respective lists of the top trends on their sites over the past 12 months. Each is a fascination look at the obsessions and globally unifying events, people, pop culture fixations and bizarre crazes that grabbed our digital attention this year. While there’s some crossover on the Twitter and Facebook lists, the more interesting parts are where they diverge. For instance, the #1 item on Facebook’s “Memology 2010” global list of top status trends was “HMU,” a shorthand status update that translates to “hit me up,” meaning someone wants you to call or text them. The rest of the list featured a mixture of more predictable/generic trends, including: World Cup (#2), Movies (#3), iPad and iPhone (#4), Haiti (#5), Justin Bieber (#6), Games on Facebook (#7), Mineros/Miners (referring to the trapped Chilean miners) (#8), the B.o.B. song “Airplanes” (#9) and 2011. Over on Twitter , the #Hindsight2010 list of top trends featured a few of the same items, but users dug a bit deeper into specific movies, events and fads. Topping the list was the disastrous Gulf oil spill, followed by the mania over the FIFA World Cup, then the mind-bending thriller “Inception,” the Haiti Earthquake, vuvuzela (the ubiquitous buzzing sound of the World Cup) and the Apple iPad. Rounding out the list were the Google Android phone (#7), Justin Bieber (#8), “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (#9) and the late eight-tentacled World Cup prognosticator, Pulpo Paul. MTV has reason to celebrate the list, as our own Video Music Awards came in at # 1 on the list of top TV trends, and the MTV Movie Awards were #9. “Pretty Little Liars” was #2 on the list, followed by “True Blood,” “Walking Dead” and the Grammy Awards. The men and women of “Glee” came in at #6, just ahead of “Family Guy” and “CSI.” The American Music Awards rounded out the top 10. Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Taylor Swift Is MTV News’ #3 Woman Of The Year

Swift fell in and out of love through song, but we never stopped loving the superstar in 2010. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: AP/Matt Sayles After a year as impressive as 2009, Taylor Swift followed suit in 2010. She toured the world, released a chart-topping album and even starred in her first feature film. Swift kicked off the year winning awards and ended it dominating the charts, and in between, she never looked back. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) Swift proved that she was more than just a crossover coincidence thanks to catchy songs and girl-next-door charm that appeals to the masses. She managed to scoop up awards and be surprised by each win. The other shoe isn’t going to drop anytime soon, and 2010 proved that. 2010 Highlights : In January, Taylor took home her first People’s Choice Award and covered Better Than Ezra’s “Breathless” at the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon. She also broke Britney Spears’ record for first-week download sales by a female artist thanks to her tune “Today Was a Fairytale.” But it was February that would truly leave her breathless. At the Grammys in February, Swift took home four trophies , including Album of the Year. She also hit the stage with Stevie Nicks at the awards show. Weeks later, she would rule the box office alongside former beau Taylor Lautner in “Valentine’s Day.” Swift spent much of 2010 on tour, but along the way, she racked up nominations at a slew of awards shows, including the Academy of Country Music Awards and CMT Awards . In the spring, she revealed that she was working on her next album and that, unsurprisingly, it would focus on “boys and love.” In July, the singer announced that her next album would be out in October and that she wouldn’t hold back on the aptly titled Speak Now. Weeks later, in August, the album’s first single, “Mine,” leaked online and then soared to the top of the charts. “I was reflecting back on a boy I liked at a certain time,” she said about the song. The video was released at the end of August and showed a more adult side of the singer. Then September rolled around and Swift took the stage at the VMAs . It was a defining moment for the singer, as she publicly let go of the Kanye West incident from a year prior and buried the hatchet with the rapper thanks to her heartfelt performance of “Innocent.” Swift later explained , “I had a lot of options going into the VMAs: You can not go, you can perform your current single, you can pretend that nothing happened or you can say what you need to say at the time you need to say it.” By early October, Swift was pre-releasing Speak Now tracks, prompting speculation about whether the songs were referring to famous exes like Taylor Lautner and Joe Jonas . “I’ve never kept quiet the fact that I write songs about people,” she said. “It’s like, this is album number three. You guys have had fair warning!” For the album’s release, Swift invited fans to her album-release party , and just one week later, she found out that Speak Now had sold 1,047,000 units in its first week, making it the biggest album release in five years . Swift capped 2010 with performances at the CMA Awards and the American Music Awards , announcing a world tour , embarking on a whirlwind romance with Jake Gyllenhaal and turning 21 . Not a bad year, to say the least. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. Justin Bieber Is MTV News’ #3 Man Of The Year

In 2010, the pop star cleans up at awards shows, causes worldwide pandemonium — and turns 16. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Caulfield/AMA2010/Getty/DCP Justin Bieber seemingly did it all in 2010. He sold out concerts, filmed a movie, released two albums and set girls hearts aflutter — all in the span of 12 months. Not only is he arguably the biggest pop star in the world, he’s also pals with some of hip-hop’s biggest names (just ask Drake, Ludacris and Kanye West if you don’t believe us), and he chills with some of the prettiest girls in the game thanks to friendships with ladies like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) This really is Justin Bieber’s world, and we’re all just living in it. For a kid from a small town in Canada, Bieber’s meteoric rise to fame from Internet sensation to bona fide musical superstar may have seemed fast, but let’s face it: Bieber is the real deal. 2010 Highlights : Justin Bieber kicked off 2010 with his smash single “Baby.” He also showed his charitable side appearing on BET’s “SOS: Help for Haiti” telethon and lending his voice to the “We Are the World” remake . He was also a presenter at the Grammy Awards alongside Ke$ha. Bieber then went bowling with Drake and Ludacris in his “Baby” video and would later date the clip’s leading lady, Jasmine Villegas . In February, Justin caused hysteria in Paris during a trip to Europe, and then in March, he turned sweet 16, collaborated with Sean Kingston on the track “Eeenie Meenie” and had Aziz Ansari mock him in a Funny or Die clip he thought was “hilarious.” He also released his sophomore album, My World 2.0, which he promised would be “a lot of fun.” Bieber became the subject of his own “Diary” special in late March, released his video for “Never Let You Go” and made an appearance at the Teen Choice Awards. He kicked off April by taking over Funny or Die , where he joked, “I’m a star. I do what stars do. I ride on yachts. I autograph lady lumps.” That same month, Bieber once again showed his funny side on “Saturday Night Live,” where he was the night’s musical guest. He sat down with MTV News and thanked his fans for making him a constant Twitter trend . He shook up New Zealand and Australia, causing more fan hysteria, and by May, his fans were threatening the life of Kim Kardashian just for taking a Twitpic with him! In June, he hooked up with Jaden Smith for the “Karate Kid” track “Never Say Never.” He was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards and hung out with his mentor Usher in the “Somebody to Love” video . That same month, Bieber was a big winner at the Much Music Awards and kicked off his first-ever headlining tour . The second half of 2010 was just as busy for the star. In July, he and Lady Gaga battled it out for YouTube supremacy and announced he’d be on “CSI” and releasing a book . (He followed through on all those promises by year’s end.) By the end of August, Kanye West’s remix of “Runaway Love” hit the world, and it was announced that Bieber would be performing at the VMAs. He also filmed the concert portions of his 3-D movie at Madison Square Garden. JB hit the stage at the VMAs in September and even took home his first-ever Moonman . At the show, he shared with MTV News that “girlfriends are trouble.” He made his cameo on “CSI” and premiered his video for “U Smile,” and then in October, he revealed the name of his 3-D flick — “Never Say Never” — as well as the first trailer for the movie . In November, he released his book and his My Worlds Acoustic album and took home a few American Music Awards . And that brings us to December, when he sat down with Barbara Walters , made Google’s Zeitgeist list and went out for pancakes with Selena Gomez . If doing all that in 12 months isn’t reason enough to make Justin Bieber our #3 Man of the Year, then we’re not sure what can. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. Lady Gaga ‘Super-Excited’ By Wax Statues, Perez Hilton Says

Gossip blogger helped unveil Gaga statue at Madame Tussauds in L.A. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Lacsina Perez Hilton unveils Lady Gaga’s wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hollywood on Thursday Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images Is there ever too much Lady Gaga ? Well, Madame Tussauds doesn’t seem to think so. On Thursday the wax museum unveiled eight Gaga likenesses all over the world. The singer’s pal, gossip blogger Perez Hilton, was on hand to help unveil the Los Angeles statue. That version of the statue has Lady Gaga donning the outfit she wore for her performance at the Brit Awards in February, which was dedicated to her friend the late Alexander McQueen. The look included a white lace bodysuit, lace mask and over-the-top bouffant wig, and Perez seemed to approve of that pick. “There have been eight that have been revealed all over the world and I think they saved the best for last,” he told MTV News, moments after unveiling the statue. “It’s such a monumental day because each one of these figures takes months to make, it costs $300,000 to do just one and it’s so amazing and lifelike. It’s creepy … that it is so real. I kept waiting for her to blink, but she didn’t. It’s very accurate. I know that Gaga would be very honored.” So how does Gaga feel about eight versions of herself living around the world? “I know that Gaga is super-excited and happy about it,” Hilton said. “And I’m sure that when she has a chance she’ll go and check one of them out!” Gaga statues are now living in wax museums all over the world. MTV News was also on hand when her New York statue went on display. Gaga appears in a sheer black dress paired with a wide-brim hat made of hair, a look she wore to the Consumer Electronics Show back in January. In Berlin, Gaga wears a blazer, leotard and hair bow; in London the figure dons a Philip Treacy telephone hat and sparkly navy Armani suit; in Amsterdam, she’s in a nude bodysuit, a white blazer and a towering purple beehive. Her skintight black harlequin outfit is featured in Hong Kong, and her wire “wing” dress is on display in Shanghai. Related Photos Lady Gaga Gets Waxed Worldwide Related Artists Lady Gaga

Bruno Mars Thrilled By Seven Grammy Nominations

‘We’re being acknowledged by the biggest,’ Mars said of his nods for performing and producing. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by James Lacsina Bruno Mars Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Each year, the Grammy Awards not only serve to recognize the best achievements in music over the past year but also help to elevate certain artists from unknowns to stars and from successes into household names. The latter will probably be true of Bruno Mars once the awards are handed out in February, as the singer and producer was nominated for a total of seven awards during Wednesday night’s “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!” show. Mars scored a handful of nominations as a performer for his vocal stylings on the chart-topping B.o.B track “Nothin’ on You” and also picked up several nominations as a member of the Smeezingtons, the writing and production trio that consists of Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine. The three are responsible for hits like Cee Lo’s “F— You” (which picked up four nominations), and the crew also picked up a nod for Producer of the Year. The Smeezingtons were rightfully thrilled at the prospect of taking home a load of hardware in February. “We don’t know how it feels yet, because we just got the word. We’re a little awkward in these situations,” Mars admitted to MTV News following the show (in which he also performed live). “But the fact is that we worked so hard this year. In a studio not too far from here, in a little shack, we’d have B.o.B in there writing ‘Nothin’ on You’ with us, or Cee Lo writing ‘F— You’ with us. The fact that it’s being acknowledged by the Grammys is incredible. It’s really making us feel like we did something. We’re being acknowledged by the biggest.” As far as which award the group is gunning for, they’re open to anything. “I’d like to win Best Dressed,” Mars joked. “Maybe Most Humorous. Or Best Kisser!” They also want the world to know that just because their status will become elevated doesn’t mean that they’re inaccessible. “The funnest part of our job is that we don’t know who we’re working with next,” Mars told MTV News. “We’re fans and students of music, and we just love to work with whoever wants to work, whoever wants to write a song. Rock, hip-hop, R&B — we just want to do music. And we’re happy just doing that.” Mars and the Smeezingtons will compete against other heavy hitters like Eminem (10 nominations), Jay-Z (six), Lady Gaga (six) and B.o.B (five) when the Grammys are handed out on Sunday, February 13, 2011. How many Grammys do you think Bruno Mars will win? Let us know in the comments! USB Is the Devil’s Connection

You see, sane and rational human being, the USB logo is actually in the shape of a trident, and the obvious action to Evangelical Christians in Brazil is to ban its use.
