Gay Bar Proposed Next to Ground Zero Mosque

In what could be a serious proposal or a thought exercise, libertarian commentator Greg Gutfeld wants to see if the tolerance expressed by proponents of the Ground Zero mosque extends to welcoming a bar that caters to Islamic gay men next door. Gutfeld, who supports the controversial project that would include a mosque and cultural center at the site of the 9/11 attacks, said Monday that he had pitched investors his idea for the gay bar, which would serve non-alcoholic drinks to accommodate the Muslim faith. He said he wants to reduce homophobia in the Muslim world while making sure that the mosque builders are not hypocritical. “Bottom line: I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar, as I am to the new mosque,” writes Gutfeld at The Daily Gut. “After all, the belief driving them to open up their center near Ground Zero, is no different than mine.” Gutfeld, the host of Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld on Fox News, was rated as an antigay voice in 2008 by GLAAD for his comments about the pregnancy of trans man Thomas Beattie. added by: TimALoftis

Google and Verizon Propose Two-Tiered Internet System

In technology news, Google and Verizon have issued a proposal that could radically restructure the internet by essentially creating a two-tiered internet system. At first glance, the Google and Verizon proposal appears to promote the idea of net neutrality, that users should have equal access to all types of information online. But the Google and Verizon proposal includes a massive loophole that would exempt from net neutrality protections all internet access over cellphone and wireless networks and any future new subscription services that broadband providers could offer. Jason Rosenbaum is with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. Jason Rosenbaum: “The Google and Verizon deal announced today is the first step towards corporate control over the internet. They propose creating two tiers of internet service: a public version of the internet that everybody will be able to use without fear of discrimination and then a private version that the big corporations will control absolutely. And that’s the version that they are likely going to put all of their investment in. So when it comes down to it, people in America will have a choice: they’ll be able to use the corporate-controlled internet, where they’ll get their information from corporate sources very quickly, or they’ll be able to use the, quote-unquote, 'public internet,' and that’s going to be relegated to the slow lane.” Craig Aaron of the group Free Press says the Google plan could permanently shift who controls the internet. Craig Aaron: “The beauty of the internet is that you’re able to get online, go wherever you want, do whatever you want, download whatever you want. And if you’re a content creator, then you have the opportunity to have the reach of a television station or a radio station or a cable channel. All you have to have is that good idea or something interesting to say. But if you change the way the internet works, if you reserve that fast lane just for a few select companies, that opportunity goes away.” Jason Rosenbaum of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee says he also has concerns about the impact of the Google-Verizon proposal on free speech online. Jason Rosenbaum: “We’ve already seen how corporate control over networks can lead to political discrimination. So, there was a text message sent out by NARAL Pro-Choice that was blocked by wireless carriers, because the wireless carriers disagreed with the message. When you have internet activities or various online activities running on a corporate-controlled network, you’re opening the door to these kinds of censorship. It’s very much a free speech issue, very much a civil rights issue. http://www.democracynow.org/2010/8/10/headlines#2 added by: treewolf39

Plane Crash Kills Ex-Senator Ted Stevens and Possibly Ex-NASA Cheif Sean O’Keefe

A plane crash in Alaska may have claimed the life of one of the state's former senators, as well as a former head of NASA. Former Republican U.S. Senator Ted Stevens was aboard a plane that crashed in Alaska, a congressional source told Reuters on Tuesday. The Associated Press also reports that former NASA Administrator, Sean O'Keefe, was on board. Nine people are believed to have been aboard in total, five of whom died, and Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said. It is unclear if O'Keefe is among the survivors. Stevens was confirmed dead by friends. Hayes said The Air Force 11th Rescue Coordination Center, which is operated by the Alaska National Guardsmen, was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the downed plane. But severe weather has hampered search-and-rescue efforts. Several people who were in the area are at the sight of the crash, the Anchorage Daily News reports. “They're not out there alone right now. There's people that are providing support,” Hayes said. “From what I'm told, there are survivors on this aircraft. I don't know how many could be fatalities at this point.” Medical personnel are also at the scene, the Air National Guard said in a statement. Stevens served in Congress for 60 years and was its longest-serving Republican senator. He lost his bid for re-election in 2008. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-08-10/stevens-dead-in-alaska-plane-crash-f… http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8c/Ted_Stevens_109th_picto… http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/08/10/2010-08-10_former_sen_ted_st… added by: EmperorThan

On Tape: Rage over McNuggets Not Being Served

(CBS) Call it a case of McNuggets Rage. Police in Toledo, Ohio have just released surveillance video of an incident from New Year's Day. They say it shows 25-year-old Melodi Dushane driving up to a McDonald's drive-through window with a neighbor at about 6:30 in the morning, and objecting strongly when told she couldn't get Chicken McNuggets at that hour, because the eatery had started serving breakfast at 2:30. See is seen getting out of the car and hitting the drive-through employee in the mouth. At that point, the manager comes over, Dushane swings a few more times, and the manager tries to pull her up through the window by her hair. Other employees prompt the manager to let her go. They close the window as Dushane tries to push it open – but she then breaks it with an object she takes out of her car. The passenger's mother says it was the employees who allowed it all to escalate. Police later charged Dushane with vandalism. added by: TimALoftis

Leaked CIA doc: "Use Plight of Afghan Women to Win Public Support for War"

Between the Bomb and the Burqa Her voice was thick with passion as she argued for ending violence against fellow Afghan women, but the men didn't listen. Instead they hurled insults at her; they called her a prostitute and a traitor to her religion. The stubborn men's insults were abusive and frustrating, but it had been worse for other women in her position. They were threatened and hunted down. Some of them were killed. Like many recent reports in the media, this story conjures up images of a brave Afghan villager struggling against the tyrannical rule of a Taliban court or insurgent militia, but that's not case: the woman in this story is an unnamed member of the Afghan Parliament supported by the United States. The verbal abuse is recounted by another female Afghan official in a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report. The men who called her a prostitute were her colleagues and fellow legislators, the supposed enemies of the religious fanatics fighting for control of Afghanistan. Such accounts shed doubts on the narrative of female liberation following the initial toppling of the Taliban, as the reinvigorated debate over the occupation has renewed the media's interest in the abuses suffered by Afghan women at the hands of America's enemies. Human rights advocates may be pleased, but media critics say the plight of Afghan woman is being used to rally support for the war, and as a recent military leak reveals, the government secretly considered such a media strategy as recently as this spring. Time magazine became the poster child for this trend last week with a cover story featuring the disfigured face of a young Afghan girl named Aisha with the ominous headline: “What Happens if We Leave Afghanistan.” “They are the people that did this to me,” Aisha told the Time reporter as she touched her damaged face, disfigured as part of Taliban punishment for running away from her abusive in-laws. “How can we reconcile with them?” Aisha's heartbreaking plea reveals the harsh reality of living in a war-torn and ultra-religious society. She puts a face on the Afghan dilemma, but critics contend that the Time article on Aisha oversimplifies a complicated issue. “Feminists have long argued that invoking the condition of women to justify occupation is a cynical ploy and the Time cover already stands accused of it,” wrote Priyamvada Gopal, an English professor at Cambridge University, in The Guardian UK. “Misogynist violence is unacceptable, but we must also be concerned by the continued insistence that the complexities of war, occupation and reality itself can be reduced to bedtime stories.” A careful editorial by Time editor Rick Stengel insists that the magazine is not “either in support of the US war effort or in opposition to it,” but its intention is also an attempt to counterbalance the recent WikiLeaks release of more than 90,000 documents detailing the military actions in Afghanistan. According to Stengel, the leaked documents cannot provide “emotional truth and insight into the way life is lived in that difficult land,” but a different WikiLeaks release does provide some insight on using Afghan women to promote war. The Red Cell CIA Leak An internal Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) document released by WikiLeaks in March reveals a secret plan to use the plight of Afghan women and refugees in developing media strategies to “leverage French (and other European) guilt” during an especially bloody summer of military escalation. The confidential document was prepared by the Red Cell, a secretive group that consults the US intelligence community. In response to the news that Dutch forces would soon withdraw from Afghanistan, the Red Cell outlined a plan to use Afghan women and refugees in developing media strategies to ensure that more NATO allies would not succumb to public pressure and follow suit. The memo claimed that a “not our problem” sentiment toward the Afghan conflict allowed European leaders to ignore voter's vast disapproval of the occupation, but “forecasts of a bloody summer” could provoke a public backlash. The forecast was correct: June and July were the deadliest months for NATO and US forces to date. The record number of body bags coupled with the firing of former US Gen. Stanley McChrystal and the bloody revelations provided by the massive WikiLeaks release has pushed international support for the war to a new low. Bloomberg reported last week that, in the wake of the WikiLeaks release, approximately 70 percent of Germans want their troops to leave “as soon as possible.” Germany has the third largest military presence in Afghanistan. Pregnant widow accused of adultery executed by Taliban

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — The Taliban has executed a pregnant widow accused of adultery in western Afghanistan, provincial and district officials said Monday. The 47-year-old woman, Sanam Gul, also known as Sanam Bibi, was killed in Badghis province Saturday morning, said Ashrafuddin Majidi, the provincial governor's spokesman. The district governor of Qades, Hashim Habibi, confirmed the execution. He said the woman was accused of adultery that left her pregnant. The Taliban shadow district governor, Mullah Abdul Hakim, and his judge ordered the woman to be executed, he said. Mohammad Yousuf, a Taliban commander, carried out the execution, shooting the woman in her head, Habibi said. The International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan condemned the killing. “This tragic gruesome brutality is an example of Taliban justice,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, director of the ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center. “This is not what the people of Afghanistan want — they want peace and freedom and that's what we're going to help provide.” The statement from the ISAF cited reports that the widow was whipped 200 times before she was shot. added by: 2helenahandbasket
