White House apologizes to Shirley Sherrod

This is a good start: At the press briefing just now, Robert Gibbs apeared to extend a heartfelt apology to Shirley Sherrod on behalf of the Obama administration, and promised a look at what went wrong. Interestingly, though, he sidestepped a question about whether fear of the conservative media drove the decision to fire Sherrod before the facts were all in. Here's what Gibbs said, referring to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack: The secretary is trying to reach her. I hope the secretary reaches her soon, and they have an opportunity to talk. The Secretary will apologize for the actions that have taken place over the past 24 to 36 hours. And on behalf of the administration, I offer our apologies. Gibbs also seemed to promise some kind of reckoning as to how the White House botched this mess, though he stopped short of promising anything official: I think everybody has to go back and look at what has happened over the past 24 to 36 hours, and ask ourselves how we got into this. How did we not ask the right questions? How did you all not ask the right questions? How did other people not ask the right questions? When asked directly by a reporter whether the administration had “overreacted” because the White House is “afraid” of the conservative media, Gibbs brushed off the question. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/07/white_house_apologizes_to_shi… added by: unimatrix0

Large China oil spill threatens sea life, water

China's largest reported oil spill emptied beaches along the Yellow Sea as its size doubled Wednesday, while cleanup efforts included straw mats and frazzled workers with little more than rubber gloves. An official warned the spill posed a “severe threat” to sea life and water quality as China's latest environmental crisis spread off the shores of Dalian, once named China's most livable city. One cleanup worker has drowned, his body coated in crude. “I've been to a few bays today and discovered they were almost entirely covered with dark oil,” said Zhong Yu with environmental group Greenpeace China, who spent the day on a boat inspecting the spill. “The oil is half-solid and half liquid and is as sticky as asphalt,” she told The Associated Press by telephone. The oil had spread over 165 square miles (430 square kilometers) of water five days since a pipeline at the busy northeastern port exploded, hurting oil shipments from part of China's strategic oil reserves to the rest of the country. Shipments remained reduced Wednesday. State media has said no more oil is leaking into the sea, but the total amount of oil spilled is not yet clear. Greenpeace China released photos Wednesday of inky beaches and of straw mats about 2 square meters (21 square feet) in size scattered on the sea, meant to absorb the oil. Fishing in the waters around Dalian has been banned through the end of August, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. “The oil spill will pose a severe threat to marine animals, and water quality, and the sea birds,” Huang Yong, deputy bureau chief for the city's Maritime Safety Administration, told Dragon TV. At least one person died during cleanup efforts. A 25-year-old firefighter, Zhang Liang, drowned Tuesday when a wave threw him from a vessel, Xinhua reported. Officials, oil company workers and volunteers were turning out by the hundreds to clean blackened beaches. “We don't have proper oil cleanup materials, so our workers are wearing rubber gloves and using chopsticks,” an official with the Jinshitan Golden Beach Administration Committee told the Beijing Youth Daily newspaper, in apparent exasperation. “This kind of inefficiency means the oil will keep coming to shore. … This stretch of oil is really difficult to clean up in the short term.” But 40 oil-skimming boats and about 800 fishing boats were also deployed to clean up the spill, and Xinhua said more than 15 kilometers (9 miles) of oil barriers had been set up to keep the slick from spreading. China Central Television earlier reported an estimate of 1,500 tons of oil has spilled. That would amount roughly to 400,000 gallons (1,500,000 liters) — as compared with 94 million to 184 million gallons in the BP oil spill off the U.S. coast. China's State Oceanic Administration released the latest size of the contaminated area in a statement Tuesday. The cause of the explosion that started the spill was still not clear. The pipeline is owned by China National Petroleum Corp., Asia's biggest oil and gas producer by volume. Friday's images of 100-foot-high (30-meter-high) flames at China's second largest port for crude oil imports drew the immediate attention of President Hu Jintao and other top leaders. Now the challenge is cleaning up the greasy plume. “Our priority is to collect the spilled oil within five days to reduce the possibility of contaminating international waters,” Dalian's vice mayor, Dai Yulin, told Xinhua on Tuesday. But an official with the State Oceanic Administration has warned the spill will be difficult to clean up even in twice that amount of time. Some locals said the area's economy was already hurting. “Let's wait and see how well they deal with the oil until Sept. 1, if the oil can't be cleaned up by then, the seafood products will all be ruined,” an unnamed fisherman told Dragon TV. “No one will buy them in the market because of the smell of the oil.” added by: JanforGore

VIDEO Pete Seeger & Mark Ruffalo Protest Oil & Gas Industry

Folk music icon Pete Seeger and actor Mark Ruffalo joined elected officials and environmental advocates in Albany, NY on Tuesday to warn that a new method of gas extraction is destructive, unpredictable, and a threat to public health. Ruffalo, a Sullivan County resident who recently appeared in the film The Kids Are Alright, held up a jar of water from a Pennsylvania town where the method of hydraulic fracturing (or hydro-fracking, for short) has contaminated the water supply. He warned that New Yorkers could suffer the same fate unless the state legislature takes action in the coming days. Seeger, a longtime environmental activist, composed a song about fracking for the event highlighting the similarities between natural gas extraction and oil drilling: “And when 'drill baby drill' turns to 'spill baby spill,' God’s counting on me – God's counting on you.” Hydro-fracking is a dirty, dangerous method of extracting gas from underground rock by drilling a well in the rock and then pumping thousands of gallons of a toxic soup of chemicals into the rock to create fissures that release the gas trapped inside. Many companies are seeking to ramp up gas production by starting hydro-fracking operations in NY state this year. Hydro-fracking has contaminated water across the country from Pennsylvania to Colorado and its effects are the subject of the new documentary GASLAND. NY's Dept of Environmental Conservation holds the authority to grant permits to oil and gas companies. The Dept has stated that it plans to allow hydro-fracking to begin despite pressure from a massive grassroots campaign has been waged across the state to “kill the drill.” One grassroots organization that has decided to fight the oil and gas industry on hydro-fracking on the national level is Frack Action. www.FrackAction.org added by: captainplanet71

Feature Release: New Profile Pages, Activity Streams, Twitter, and Badges!

As far as releases go, this one is stuffed to the gills. There's a lot to cover here, so let's not waste any time. New Profiles With Activity Streams Ever since I began working at Current we've fielded requests for improved profile pages, and feed based activity streams. Well, prepare yourself because here comes feed overload. Today we launch a totally revamped profile page experience, and here's everything you need to know about the changes in place. Viewing Other Peoples' Profiles In the old system, a visit to someones profile gave you a few options to view their activity, but some of the details were missing. For example, what are they choosing to follow on the site? Did they recently connect with someone new, or choose to follow infoMania? This wasn't immediately clear. Our new profile page layout offers a feed of activity that can either be viewed in one catch all stream, or filtered with the following options: Viewing Your Own Profile You might be thinking, “OK, the design update is nice, but this seems pretty similar to the old profile options.” And you're right…sort of. The real difference with profile updates comes in the way your own profile works when you visit it. Before, a visit to your own profile would show you the exact same thing everyone else saw — a list of recent activity. Starting today, your profile will default to an all-new view when you visit it while logged in — Latest Updates. The Latest Updates is a sortable feed of everything the people you are choosing to follow are doing on the site, which means your profile page is now a pretty useful place to visit on a more regular basis. Don't worry, you can still see what your profile looks like to everyone else by clicking on the “My Activity” tab. Go ahead, try out the new stream of activity on your profile and let us know what you think. Twitter Integration We realize that many of you are active on Twitter as well as Facebook, and since you're already a fan of Current TV what better way to share your insider knowledge with your friends than by connecting your profile to your Facebook and Twitter? We've had Facebook up and running for some time now, but today we add Twitter to the list of services you can authenticate on Current. What does this do? It makes it easy to share your activity on Current with your followers, and when you earn badges and achievements we'll even let them know about it. In addition, once you've authenticated your accounts you can use Facebook or Twitter to log into Current. Well, what are you waiting for? Head over to your account preferences and connect your accounts! Badges and Achievements There is so much crammed into this release that I've decided to devote an entire thread to Badges and Achievements alone. Head over here to learn more. This is a boatload of new functionality, so if you bump into any bugs or general wonkiness, or just want to offer some feedback, please send us a note via our

What Are Badges? A Guide To Achievements On Current TV

Literally one month ago we announced that achievements are coming to Current TV, and well, today is the day! We're in the process of rolling out badges and achievements to the site, along with a whole bunch of other goodies like new profile pages, activity streams, and Twitter integration. You can read all about those updates on this post. This post is dedicated to badges. What are badges? They are used to mark achievements that you unlock by participating on our site. For example: Some ways to unlock badges are: Posting and voting on comments. Connecting your Current profile to your Facebook and Twitter. Earning positive votes from others in the community. Posting stories and comments on Twitter and Facebook. And many more! Each badge is worth points, and some badges are worth more points than others. To earn the most points, you'll need to unlock the badges that are most valuable on the site. When you unlock a badge you'll be notified with an alert at the bottom of the page. Don't worry if you missed the notification, you can always head over to your profile page and find a list of the badges you've unlocked under the “Badges” sort found in the “My Activity” tab. We also display the total points you've earned below your username on your profile page. Read our announcement on the blog to learn more about the all-new profile page and activity feeds. Here's a list of the first round of badges we're launching with. Check out the full list, then visit your profile to see which ones you've unlocked. Or better yet, click on any of the badges to see a list of other community members savvy enough to unlock some of the badges in the system. For example, the Ye Olde-Tymer badge is a retired achievement given only to community members who registered before 10/16/2007. Wanna

Irish Gun Owners Can Now Legally Shoot Home Intruders

Irish homeowners can now legally use guns to defend themselves if their homes are attacked under new legislation. The new home defense bill has moved the balance of rights back to the house owner if his home is broken into “where it should always have been”, say top Irish police. The police association of superintendents and inspectors, the AGSI, stated that “the current situation, which legally demands a house owner retreat from an intruder, was intolerable”. The new bill was published by Justice Minister Dermot Ahern yesterday. Under the bill homeowners will be allowed to use “reasonable” force against intruders to defend themselves, others or their property. This includes lethal force, depending on the circumstances. Justice Minister Dermot Ahern stated that house owners could use guns in self-defense, especially if the intruders were armed but said it would ultimately be a matter for the courts to resolve. The bill also clarifies that a house owner will not be required to retreat from an intruder. and that intruders injured as a result of reasonable force won’t be able to sue the house owner. “The bill is welcomed because it aims to clarify the entitlements of a homeowner when faced with the situation where an uninvited intruder has entered the home,” AGSI vice-president Dan Hanley told the Irish Examiner. “The bill aims to shift the balance of rights back to the homeowner where it should always have been. It is intolerable a homeowner should be compelled to retreat in front of an intruder who has entered the home and who may have malign intentions towards the homeowner, the family or the home owner’s property.” Hanley added: “It is ridiculous to suggest the bill, which attempts to redress a serious legal imbalance, would provide a license to kill or a ‘have-a-go’ charter for homeowners, the vast majority of whom will continue to act with good sense and in a peaceful way.” Minister Ahern also dismissed the suggestion the bill was a “license to kill”. He stated it merely allowed for lethal force provided it was justifiable. Rural Link, the national network of community groups in rural Ireland welcomed the bill, saying it was “sensible legislation giving much needed clarity to homeowners on their rights when confronted by intruders”. The Irish Council for Civil Liberties however, stated it would inspect the bill to establish that it was “human-rights compliant”. The need for new legislation became evident after an intruder, John Ward, was shot dead while on the land and dwelling area of Mayo farmer, P

Police Arrest Man at Mexico Airport Smuggling 18 Endangered Titi Monkeys Under Clothes

Mexican police arrest man hiding 18 monkeys under clothes at airport By the CNN Wire Staff July 20, 2010 4:17 p.m. EDT (CNN) — Mexican authorities searching a man with a bulge under his shirt at the airport in the nation's capital found 18 monkeys hidden beneath his clothes, police said. Investigators grew suspicious after Roberto Sol Cabrera Zavaleta, 38, became “markedly nervous” when asked what he was transporting, Mexico's Public Safety Department said. Two of the tiny titi monkeys he was carrying in a belt were dead, the department said in a statement, and 16 of them survived the journey from Lima, Peru. Cabrera has been detained as authorities continue their investigation, the statement said. In an interview with authorities released by police, Cabrera said he first carried the monkeys in his suitcase, but then hid the animals in his clothes so they would not be harmed by X-ray machines at the airport. He described the animals as “pets” and told authorities he had purchased them for $30. Titi monkeys are protected endangered species requiring a permit for possession, police said. Images released by police show the tiny creatures, many of which are tied up in pouches, squirming in a cardboard box. "Behind the Mustache" | The Brutality of Factory Farms: An Inside Look | John Robbins

John Robbins Author of The New Good Life, Diet For A New America, and many other bestsellers Posted: July 13, 2010 08:00 AM The Brutality of Factory Farms: An Inside Look (VIDEO): http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A //www.youtube.com/watch3DTEGw8iFbG5I3D1 _____ This past week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that will essentially prohibit, starting in 2015, any egg from being sold in the state that comes from caged hens. This bill became law 20 months after a majority of California voters approved Proposition 2, making it clear that concern for the living conditions of livestock is no longer the province of animal rights activists alone. Recognizing how widespread concern about the humane treatment of farm animals has become, the California Milk Advisory Board has recently ramped up its 10-year “Happy Cow” advertising campaign with a new series of ads proclaiming that “Great milk comes from Happy Cows. Happy Cows come from California.” These ads are now being shown across the nation. Unfortunately, there are a few problems with the ads. For one, they weren't filmed in California at all. They were filmed in Auckland, New Zealand. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Current Milk Board ads claim that 99 percent of the state's dairy farms are family owned. But in order to arrive at this figure, they count as “dairy farms” rural households with one or two cows. Meanwhile, there are corporate-owned dairies in the San Joaquin Valley which have 15,000 or 20,000 cows. It is these far larger enterprises that produce the vast majority of California's milk. My concern, let me emphasize, is not with small-scale family farms. I have no problem with the many hard-working families who treat their cows well, take care of the land and try to bring a healthy product to market. My problem is with the much larger agribusiness enterprises, the factory farms to whom the animals in their care are nothing but sources of revenue. Thanks to the practices they employ, the amount of milk produced yearly by the average California cow is nearly 3,000 pounds more than the national average. This increased production may seem like a good thing, but it is achieved at great cost to the animals. The cows are routinely confined in extremely unnatural conditions, injected with hormones, fed antibiotics, and in general treated with all the compassion of four legged milk pumps. Roughly one third of California's cows suffer from painful udder infections, and more than half suffer from other infections and illnesses. Although genetically engineered bovine growth hormone is banned in many countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of the European Union, it is widely used in California's largest dairy operations to increase milk production. Unfortunately, it also increases udder infections and lameness in the cows, markedly raises the amount of pus found in milk, and may increase the risk of cancer in consumers. The natural lifespan of a dairy cow is about 25 years, but one-fourth of California's dairy cows are slaughtered each year (typically at four or five years old), because they've become crippled from painful foot infections or calcium depletion, or simply because they can no longer produce the unnaturally high amounts of milk required of them. The Milk Board ads present the California dairy industry as a bucolic enterprise that operates in lush, grassy pastures. Some of the ads employ the slogan “So much grass, so little time.” But California's dairy industry is concentrated in the dry and barren Central Valley. Here, the cows are typically kept in overcrowded, dirt feedlots. Some never see a blade of grass in their entire lives. The ads show calves in meadows talking happily to their mothers. But the calves born to California dairy cows typically spend only 24 hours with their mothers, and some do not even get that much. Here is a video that reveals what actually happens to the calves: http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A //www.youtube.com/watch3DTEGw8iFbG5I3D1 added by: EthicalVegan
