Does context matter when provocative language is used to raise awareness about important issues?

Raising awarenss about breast cancer and preventative care is nothing new. But one campaign, designed to raise awareness among young people, has been banned from some schools. The campaign, by the Keep A Breast Foundation, includes rubber bracelets sporting the slogan “I love boobies.” The bracelets have been banned at some schools, due to complaints that they are inappropriate. Is the use of provcative language inappropriate as part of an awareness raising campaing? Or should context make a bigger difference? added by: sgwhites

Too little, way too late : Fidel Castro concedes that the Cuban economic model isn’t working

Fidel Castro tells an American journalist that the Cuban economic model isn't working. The former Cuban president made the jaw-dropping comment to Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic. Goldberg says the ailing Cuban leader's remarks came almost as an aside over lunch recently in Havana. “The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore,” Castro told Goldberg. The writer said he was so stunned that he asked his companion at the lunch, Julia Sweig, a leading Latin America scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations, if he had heard Castro correctly. Fidel Castro: "The Cuban Model No Longer Works"

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/09/fidel-cuban-model-doesn… In an interview with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, Fidel Castro admitted that “the Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore.” Could this finally legitimize the actions of the opposition that has been trying for many years to bring change to Cuba? What does this mean for the future of Cuba, that the leader of the Revolution itself believes that the economic model no longer works? And also, what does this mean for Hugo Chavez in Venezuela who has time and time again held up Cuba as a model for Venezuela? _______________________________________________________________________ Personally, I am glad that what Cubans in exile have been saying for 50 years has finally been admitted by Fidel Castro. I have only one word for this: Vindication. added by: UrbanGypsy

Are Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Cashing in on 9/11?

Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are rendezvousing in Alaska this Saturday to commemorate 9/11. The event will likely share some similarities to Beck's “Restoring Honor” rally in DC. But with one important difference: This one costs attendees. Tickets for the event range from a low of $73.75 per person (including taxes and fees) to a high of $225, for a spot in the arena and participation in a 'meet and greet.' There was no indication to whom or what the proceeds will go. The costly ticket price has some on the left accusing Beck and Palin of profiting off 9/11: * What's the $$$ For? asks libertarian blogger Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway: “Charging for a 9/11 rally does sound odd, although presumably at least a portion of the ticket price is going toward facility rental. Nonetheless, if I was putting out that much money for a political rally I’d want to know where the profits were going.” * Shameful, writes Huffington Post contributor Bob Cesca on his blog: “These people ought to be ashamed on themselves. Unless the proceeds are going to the families of the victims (who Glenn Beck hates), I can't think of anything more gratuitous and shameless — other than, perhaps, a 'genuine slivers of Ground Zero' mail order business.” Lee Fang at Think Progress adds, “In addition to using September 11th as a launching pad to score political points, the right is now using the day to rake in cash.” * Don't Raise a Stink Just Yet, writes Christian Heinze at GOP12: “It seems a bit unseemly to charge for an event like this, but the devil or angel will be in the details of where that money goes.” * This Is a Patriotic Event, writes Sarah Palin on her Facebook page: “We can count on Glenn to make the night interesting and inspiring, and I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget.'” http://www.theatlanticwire.com/opinions/view/opinion/Are-Glenn-Beck-and-Sarah-Pa… added by: TimALoftis
