The pastor of a small US church who wanted to burn copies of the Koran has cancelled his protest. Terry Jones said he was calling off the Florida event after the group behind a planned mosque close to Ground Zero in New York agreed to relocate it. Mr Jones had said the burning would be a stand against terrorism, but his plan was internationally condemned. This just happend by my area… SAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) – Firefighters are battling a large fire burning on a hillside in the San Bruno area, near San Francisco. Television live shots show large flames shooting into the air. A South San Francisco fire official confirmed firefighters were responding to a fire, but had no other details. Witnesses say a loud explosion was felt just before the flames erupted Thursday evening. Florida minister cancels plans to burn Koran on 9/11 GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The leader of a small Florida church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy says he is canceling plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. Pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that he decided to cancel his protest because the leader of a planned Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its controversial location. The agreement couldn't be immediately confirmed. Jones' plans to burn Islam's holiest text Saturday sparked an international outcry. President Barack Obama, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan and several Christian leaders had urged Jones to reconsider his plans. They said his actions would endanger U.S. soldiers and provide a strong recruitment tool for Islamic extremists. The Duke University College Republicans lost its funding five months after it impeached its chairman because he is openly gay. The student senate Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to defund the organization for the academic year, according to the Duke student newspaper, The Chronicle.Student senators were shown discriminatory and harassing e-mails Wednesday night that Justin Robinette and his supporters received. The senate also voted to revoke the group's charter, but that decision must be approved by the Student Organizational Finance Committee. Robinette said earlier this year that the executive board decided he was unfit to serve as chairman because of “conduct unbecoming of a person in a position of leadership,” including failing to attend events and using the group’s funds for personal use. Robinette said the charges are “petty” and the situations in question occurred before he was unanimously reelected in March, a month before the abrupt impeachment. added by: TimALoftis
