How Miley Cyrus Forced Disney to Ban On-Set Tweeting

Miley Cyrus may have been one of the first stars to famously delete her Twitter — as she told Movieline , “It’s dangerous, it’s not fun, [and] it wastes your life” — but who knew that her habits could dampen other people’s online oversharing? According to her director pal Adam Shankman, he and Cyrus are responsible for a new no-tweeting stipulation that Disney has started to write into its cast and crew contracts. #howdidthishappen?

Michael Jackson Left Behind A Legacy Of Unfinished Projects

A year after his death, we’ve seen ‘This Is It’ and heard the leaked songs, but where’s that robot hotel? By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images In the twilight of his career, Michael Jackson was almost as well known for the projects he never completed as he was for the ones that came to fruition. From the mid-1990s on, fans were frequently tantalized with the promise of movies, theme parks, tours and song collaborations with the day’s hottest music stars that came and went without ever being realized. As the one-year anniversary of Jackson’s death approaches, MTV News is taking a look at the many plans the King of Pop dreamed up before his premature end, some of which are finally becoming reality. Despite more than a decade out of the pop-culture spotlight, Jackson also clearly never stopped having his finger on the pulse of what was going on in music. Lady Gaga recently revealed that Jackson had tapped her to open for his 50-show This Is It stand at the O2 arena in London. “I was actually asked to open for Michael on his tour,” she said. “We were going to open for him at the O2. … And we were working on making it happen. And I suppose there was some talk about the openers doing some duets with Michael onstage.” In fact, one of the choreographers of This Is It said in an interview that not only did Jackson want to have Gaga open for him, he was very interested in recording a song with her before his death. Travis Payne said that after giving Jackson a short list of possible collaborators for his next musical project (including Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Usher and Justin Timberlake), the pop icon suggested Payne check out the then budding superstar Gaga. “He goes, ‘Lady Gaga.’ I go, ‘Really?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ He’s the one who really got me to get into her,” Payne recalled. “He literally told me, ‘You gotta get into her. She’s good.’ So, I started listening to her music more and going on YouTube and looking at her performances, and I was like, ‘He’s right.’ ” Jackson was also clearly looking to take his place among the musical icons he most admired and whose sales records he was determined to break during the course of his career. Just like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Jackson will be immortalized by Cirque du Soleil with a permanent show in Las Vegas and a touring version in 2011, thanks to an agreement with Jackson’s estate. This brings to fruition a long-held dream for Jackson, who was a big fan of the Canadian troupe’s productions and had discussed mounting a show based on his music several years before his death. Jackson always dreamed big , and toward the end of his life, he spent quite a bit of time in Vegas cooking up another abandoned pie-in-the-sky project. In October 2005, just a few months removed from his acquittal on child molestation charges , Jackson began work with fashion designer Andr

Miley Cyrus: ‘I’m Not A Rapper’

‘It’s speaking to the music,’ Cyrus says of her ‘rhythmic’ stylings on Can’t Be Tamed. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Miley Cyrus Photo: MTV News In addition to adopting an edgier look and sound on her new album, Can’t Be Tamed, Miley Cyrus is also trying out a new way of expressing herself. On tracks like “Liberty Walk,” Cyrus raps — but please, don’t call MC an MC. “I call it more of a spoken, rhythmic [singing style],” she explained. “I’m not a rap type. Maybe a little bit. It’s speaking to the music, but if I say that I’m a rapper, I’m going to be like, ‘I’m not a rapper.’ I’ve got no flow in that way. I’ve got no swag.” Her “Can’t Be Tamed” single, however, did just get a hip-hop makeover, courtesy of Lil Jon, who Cyrus said took the track to a whole new level. “He’s sick,” she said. “I love him, because he just made this song. It was already something that set me apart, but it just [became something more with him]. You know, the fact that he respects my music and we are completely opposite styles, and the fact that he can be like, ‘OK, this is a good song,’ it just shows you don’t have to be a certain age, gender [to like it]. “It’s a dance song,” she added about the remix. “It’s a party song, and he’s awesome. I like how he’s one person when he’s chilling in the studio. I’ve never seen someone flip on and off. He’s got, like, double personas … like so wired. It’s cool.” Although she once admitted she has never heard a Jay-Z song — despite her Jay-referencing line in “Party in the U.S.A.” — she does have a few other favorite MCs, including Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman. “I love it,” she said of the two rappers. “I don’t know any of the songs. They all blend in. I can’t really break it up, but I like it. But I’m not a rapper.” What do you think of Miley’s “spoken, rhythmic” style on “Can’t Be Tamed?” Let us know in the comments! Miley Cyrus’ MTV Live-Stream Show: The Good Girl Grows Up

During six-song set in L.A., singer speaks her mind and performs ‘Who Owns My Heart’ for the first time. By James Montgomery Miley Cyrus performs at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on Monday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Her new album is available now. She has a brash new attitude to go along with it. And both of those things were on display Monday night (June 21), as Miley Cyrus took to the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a live-streaming concert called, appropriately enough, “Miley Cyrus: Live in L.A.” Her six-song set — streamed on MTV.com — showcased songs from her just-released Can’t Be Tamed and gave the 17-year-old Cyrus a chance to get a bit rebellious, speaking her mind on a host of topics (including abusive relationships and gay rights), prowling the stage with purpose and even working a profanity or two into the mix. She kicked things off with the title track from Tamed, a strutting, steamy thing that saw her spitting lyrics, tossing her hair, popping her hips and even re-enacting the faux kiss she shared with a female dancer earlier this month on “Britain’s Got Talent” (though, perhaps in the spirit of equal opportunity, she also shared a fake smooch with a male dancer). But it wasn’t all sass. At song’s end, Cyrus showed off her pipes a bit too, extending a “knoooooow” to glorious lengths. That was followed by another Tamed track, “Who Owns My Heart” (which Cyrus introduced by telling the rapt audience that it was the first time she’d ever performed the track live), which galloped along on a shuffling beat and was given added punch thanks to the addition of a live band. There was some heavy panting from Cyrus and a big-time chorus — “Who owns my heart/ Is it love, or is it art?” — that had the crowd shouting along. Loudly. She changed things up a bit with “Liberty Walk,” a song she co-wrote and dedicated to “women who are stuck in abusive relationships … to empower them.” The song — which features a stomping beat and even a bit of rapping from MC — also gave her the chance to slip a couple of “sh–s” by the censors too … much to the delight of the audience. Up next was her cover of Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” which featured some genuinely windswept guitar work, but not Poison main man Bret Michaels (the two performed the tune together last week on “Good Morning America” ) though she did dedicate the song to him and urged the audience to “pray” for his continued health (she also said the song was her mom’s favorite). “Rose” was followed by the anthemic “Robot,” which saw the reappearance of her backup dancers, and then the MTV.com live stream ended with “Heart Beats for Love,” a power-packed ballad that Cyrus introduced by saying that she wrote it “mostly for my gay fans,” adding that she abhorred the fact that, “We have people on this earth who hate someone for loving another.” She then launched herself into the song, eyes closed, making a pair of peace signs with her hands, and by the time the tune had reached its crescendo, everyone in the audience was doing the same, showing (much like everything else on this night) not just the power and confidence of Cyrus’ new songs, but the sway she holds over her fans too. Sway she’s apparently decided to use for good. And, really, that speaks a lot louder than some fake girl-on-girl action any day of the week. What did you think of Miley’s six-song set? Kristen Stewart Says ‘Breaking Dawn’ In 3-D Would Be ‘Awesome’

‘What if she opens her eyes to this extraordinary world?’ actress says of soon-to-be vampire Bella. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Will “Breaking Dawn” be in 3-D ? That’s the question Twilighters have been tossing around, particularly since news broke that the final chapter of the vampire saga would be split into two films . When MTV News asked Kristen Stewart back in February how she’d feel about seeing, say Bella Swan give birth “Avatar”-style, in 3-D , the star was a bit squeamish. But now, it seems Stewart may be warming up to the idea. “I’m probably speaking out of line or whatever, but I think it would be awesome,” she told MTV News about the prospect of “Breaking Dawn” director Bill Condon going three-dimensional. “Nobody knows what it’s like to look through the eyes of a vampire. What if [Bella] opens her eyes to this extraordinary world? It could be cool.” Of course, there’s still the issue of whether the gory birthing sequence that would bring Renesmee Cullen into the world should get the 3-D treatment — or any onscreen treatment at all. “I mean, the baby part, it’s easy to joke [about] how weird it would be, but it wouldn’t be the whole thing,” Stewart speculated of what might make it to film. “It would be parts.” For now, those details are still up in the air and the decisions will ultimately rest with Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. As for what we do know, Stewart is thrilled that the “Breaking Dawn” story will be told in two parts . “I’m really excited,” Stewart said when we spoke with her as she promoted the June 30 opening of “Eclipse.” “I didn’t want to read the script that was just one [movie]. It would have lacked so much because you just couldn’t cram the story into one. At least that was my opinion, so I’m really excited.” Should “Breaking Dawn” hit theaters in 3-D? Miley Cyrus Fans Loved Seeing Her ‘Edgier’ At Live-Stream Show

‘It’s really showing her personality break from Disney,’ fan says after Can’t Be Tamed concert. By Joel Hanek Miley Cyrus performs during her Live-Stream on Monday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus took over the Internet on Monday night, when MTV live-streamed her live performance of six songs from her new album, Can’t Be Tamed. And though the 17-year-old has been showing off her edgier look and sound, the crowd at Los Angeles’ House of Blues remain stalwart in their fandom. Kelly Rindonde, a fan who traveled all the way from Philadelphia for the show, is enjoying the new Cyrus. “She’s all grown up,” she told MTV News after the show. “She definitely gave us a new side of Miley that was really exciting.” “I like all her new music; it’s really a bit edgier,” Steven Mango agreed. “It’s really showing her personality break from Disney and everything.” Many fans think that her evolution from Disney princess to pop star is indicative that Miley is isn’t going anywhere soon — and her performance even drew comparisons to other established legends. “Her dancing [is] something Michael Jackson would probably be impressed by,” Alex Satlan observed. Tetris Kelly said Cyrus’ performance was reminiscent of another contemporary artist, particularly during a cover that wasn’t aired in the live stream. “By far my favorite moment of the show tonight was when she did ‘I Love Rock ‘n Roll,’ because, to me, it was a tip off to Britney … and that’s why I like Miley. She’s like the new age Britney.” While Miley may be following in Britney’s footsteps by sharing onstage kisses with her fellow female and male dancers, other fans were pleasantly surprised that the singer was not completely uninhibited. “We expected something that was going to be raunchy,” Pam Giannino said. “Everybody’s been putting the hype up, ‘Don’t go to this because she’s going to be provocative.’ It wasn’t. It was pretty awesome. She did a really good job.” What did you think of Miley’s performance on Monday? Share your reviews in the comments. ‘Cyrus’: Bad Seed, By Kurt Loder

Jonah Hill goes dark. Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly in “Cyrus” Photo: Fox Searchlight Jonah Hill has been a reliable comic presence in films for half a dozen years now. But in his Judd Apatow movies — especially “Superbad” — we began to see that he was capable of more than just roly-poly second-banana parts. So it’s been a pleasure to discover, in “Get Him to the Greek,” that Hill also has the makings of a convincing romantic lead; and now, in “Cyrus,” to find him at home in the darkly devious role of an overgrown mama’s boy from Hell. The picture is funny, but it has stalker-flick overtones that are unsettling, and the deft assurance with which Hill navigates its ambiguous narrative is impressive. The movie opens on John (John C. Reilly), an L.A. film editor and emotional basket case. He lives alone in a dreary apartment and has just learned from his ex-wife Jamie (Catherine Keener) that she’s getting married again. Jamie is still John’s best friend; she wants him to find a new love of his own, and she invites him to a party where there’ll be lots of possibilities. John gets loaded, though, and his come-ons to various women in attendance grow increasingly pathetic. (“I’m in a tailspin,” he tells one. “I have to make a phone call,” she says.) Then, however, he’s approached by Molly (Marisa Tomei), who’s been watching him and thinks he’s sweet. They go back to his place together. They go to bed. (“You’re a sex angel,” he says gratefully.) Come the dawn, though, she’s gone — although she has left behind an encouraging note. She returns the next night, and they have sex again — in fact, they’re falling in love. But once more she has to leave. “Are you a secret agent or something?” John asks. Molly is actually a single mom. And when John follows her back to her own apartment, he discovers that she lives with her son, Cyrus (Hill), who’s 21 years old, but still neurotically possessive about Molly, and, as we learn, dedicated to repelling any suitors. At first, Cyrus is oddly welcoming. (“It’s good to finally have a new dad,” he tells John.) Behind John’s back, though, this strange man-child is scheming to snuff out his mother’s kindling love affair. John is a little perplexed by Molly’s relationship with her son. They sing in the bathroom together while Molly’s taking a shower. They roll around in the park like a couple of tussling kids. Can John somehow insert himself between these codependent characters and win Molly for his own? Not if Cyrus has anything to say about it. Mumblecore kings Jay and Mark Duplass (“Baghead”) wrote and co-directed the movie, as is their usual practice. This time, though, they’ve been given a budget big enough to hire well-known actors. The picture still has the brothers’ familiar indie flourishes — sudden shaky camera zooms and an improvisational looseness — but the lead performers bring a professional heft to the picture that’s new to the Duplass oeuvre. The dialogue is sharply funny. (As his battle with Cyrus spins out of control, John hisses, “Do you know what it feels like to be knocked unconscious?”) But there are also moments that suggest the story could go in a chillier direction. (When John and Molly are about to have sex in the living room, they suddenly notice Cyrus sitting in the shadows, watching them. “Can I have a hug?” he asks.) For its first half, the film’s atmospheric uncertainty keeps us wondering which way it will go. The movie isn’t entirely successful — it’s sometimes too loose — but it’s an unusual ride. And like Cyrus, we keep holding on. Check out everything we’ve got on “Cyrus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lady Gaga Arrives In Gaming World With ‘Dance Central’

‘Rock Band’ creator Harmonix is working on a new dance game that uses the Kinect camera on Xbox 360. By Russ Frushtick Lady Gaga Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Harmonix was making rhythm games long before the days of “Rock Band,” but despite being fans of dance music, the developer has always had a difficult time implementing those kinds of tracks into their games. The solution was to launch an entirely new rhythm-game franchise: “Dance Central.” The key to “Dance Central” was Microsoft’s Kinect , a motion-sensing camera that’s able to track the precise body movements of anyone standing in front of it. No game pad or controller is required — simply walk up and you’re good to go. From there, the jump to making a dance game seemed like a perfect fit. It’s the easy-to-play nature of “Dance Central” that made Harmonix believe they could bring it to the masses. During Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2010 , Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos admitted that it’s a challenge to get people to play a dance game. “At Harmonix we’re always thriving for new ways to get people experiencing music,” he said. “Dancing can be intimidating for some people, but ‘Dance Central’ was developed so that everyone can play.” As someone who has never been good at dancing (in games or out), I came upon “Dance Central” with a healthy amount of skepticism. Surprisingly, though, I found the game remarkably easy, even for someone as rhythmically challenged as me. Complex dance moves are broken down into individual steps, and the difficulty is slowly ramped up, so players can take one move at a time. If someone is having difficulty pulling off a step-clap-step in the middle of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” for example, the game will pause and let the would-be dancer try the move again until they have it down. It took me no time at all to adapt to the dozen moves throughout Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison,” and I even managed to gain a decent-size crowd of onlookers. Warning: This game requires a healthy sampling of humility. Harmonix isn’t ditching its “Rock Band” roots anytime soon, though. The developer is hard at work on “Rock Band 3,” which will introduce keyboards and a new “Pro” mode, which helps players to learn real-world guitars, drums and keyboards just by playing through the game. Both “Dance Central” and “Rock Band 3” are planned for release in the fall. For more gaming news straight from E3, head on over to Multiplayer.MTV.com .
