Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert Plan March On Washington

Comedians plan to lampoon Glenn Beck rally on October 30, with competing political events on the National Mall. By Gil Kaufman Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Getty Images If you happen to be in Washington D.C. on October 30 and wake up to find yourself surrounded by a sea of Sarah Palins and Glenn Becks, don’t freak out. They’re probably just getting ready for Halloween by putting on their GOP finest for a march down to a pair of protests planned for that day on the National Mall by “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart and his fake Republican brother-in-comedy, Stephen Colbert, of the “Colbert Report.” For two weeks now, Stewart has been teasing news of a big announcement, with Colbert threatening to one-up his former boss with his own major announcement, and on Thursday they finally spilled the beans about their plans. “Tonight, I bring you, the actual announcement!” Stewart thundered. He was addressing, he said, the 70 to 80 percent of Americans we don’t see on TV screaming about their political convictions while wearing funny hats, toting misspelled signs and likening our political leaders to Hitler. “Tonight, I announce the Rally to Restore Sanity. It is happening, people! … a real gathering. We will gather on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. A Million Moderate March, where we take to the streets to send a message to our leaders and our national media that say, ‘We are here, but we’re only here until 6 because we have a sitter.’ A clarion call for rationality!” Both rallies are in response to Fox News talker Beck’s recent Restoring Hope event, which they have lampooned mercilessly for weeks, poking fun at everything from the fuzzy math on how many attendees were there to see Palin to the seemingly contradictory message about faith and hope after Beck’s nonstop bashing of President Obama for using hope as a trope in his 2008 presidential campaign. On the Rally to Restore Sanity website , Stewart went into a bit more detail about his inspiration for the event. “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” reads the intro on the site’s homepage. “Who among us has not wanted to open their window and shout that at the top of their lungs? Seriously, who? Because we’re looking for those people. We’re looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn’t be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it’s appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles.” Unlike Beck, who said it was just coincidence that he schedule last month’s event in the same place and on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Stewart said the date of his gathering has “no significance whatsoever” and it’s aimed at people who are too busy to go to rallies because they have “lives and families and jobs (or are looking for jobs).” The comedian is hoping for a giant mass of people, but mostly he’d like some subversive, silly fun to go down. “Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement; the Million Man March, only a lot smaller, and a bit less of a sausage fest; or the Gathering of the Juggalos , but instead of throwing our feces at Tila Tequila, we’ll be actively *not* throwing our feces at Tila Tequila,” he promised. “Join us in the shadow of the Washington Monument. And bring your indoor voice. Or don’t. If you’d rather stay home, go to work, or drive your kids to soccer practice … Actually, please come anyway. Ask the sitter if she can stay a few extra hours, just this once. We’ll make it worth your while.” Colbert’s message about his rival March to Keep Fear Alive gathering was appropriately more red, white and blue, tinged with a bit of green, as in envy for his recent Emmy loss to Stewart. “America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear — that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty,” he wrote . “But now, there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear — forces with salt-and-pepper hair and way more Emmys than they need. They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget — ‘Reason’ is just one letter away from ‘Treason.’ Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can’t afford to take that chance.” Colbert encouraged his followers to pack an overnight bag with five extra pair of underwear, because “you’re going to need them.” Around 25,000 people are expected to attend the “competing” events, which will cap a week of tapings by both programs in the nation’s capital. Do you plan to attend either one of the rallies? Tell us in the comments!

Savannah Guthrie’s Soak-the-Rich Obsession: Higher Taxes Only Means of Lowering Deficits

Isn’t it odd after the passage of TARP, the stimulus and ObamaCare that left-wing politicians and their cheerleaders in the mainstream media are suddenly worried about budget deficits? As opposed to reining in deficit spending, the new public policy stance for the Democratic Party going into the 2010 midterm election is to call for a tax hike on the top-income earners by letting the Bush tax cuts expire for those folks. In an interview on MSNBC’s Sept. 17 “The Daily Rundown” with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, co-host Savannah Guthrie pressed the Texas senator on the need to raise taxes in order to lower budget deficits. Guthrie asked: “Sir, as you know, a lot of the energy in the Republican Party, some of the animating issues have to do with deficit and spending, and I ask you given the concern among Republican voters about deficit spending, how is it that Republicans can get behind allowing the Bush tax cuts to go forward for the wealthiest Americans, something that will cost $700 billion borrowed money deficit spending. How do you square that up?” This is becoming a pattern for Guthrie. The previous week, Guthrie pressed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell with the same line of questioning . But according to Cornyn, Guthrie was offering false choices, which was the exact same way McConnell responded when she pushed the same premise. “Well Savannah, it doesn’t make any sense to raise taxes in order to keep current tax policy in place,” Cornyn said. “I think frankly that’s a false choice. My preference would have been to make these tax rates permanent, but we didn’t have the votes to do it so they’re temporary. They’re going to expire.” Cornyn’s response didn’t satisfy “The Daily Rundown” co-host. Apparently in Guthrie’s mind, if you earn money – what the government allows you to keep is a federal expenditure, suggesting all earned income is the government’s and they’re just allowing you to keep some of it. “But, that will be deficit spending, right? I mean, it is deficit spending?” an unrelenting Guthrie interrupted and fired back at Cornyn. Cornyn called Guthrie’s “deficit spending” description a false construction and said raising taxes on anyone would be an “anti-stimulus.” “I think that’s a false construct, with all due respect, because these are current tax rates,” Cornyn replied. “We’re talking about the largest tax increase in American history. And particularly Democrats, I think, and Republicans are looking now to say, ‘You know what, even if we’re for raising the marginal tax rates to what they were in the ’90s, the worst time to be doing this is during a time of fragile, economic recovery so I hope we can come together and to stave that off, because I can’t think of a worse anti-stimulus at this time than this huge tax increase.” During the 2008 election, political opponents of the Republican Party and the party’s presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., would often describe the GOP’s economic policies as “Hoover-esque.” Liberal economist Jared Bernstein was one of the people who used it to describe Republican policies in 2008 . Bernstein now holds a prominent position in the Obama White House as the chief economist for the vice president. But you don’t have to appear more “Hoover-esque” than raising taxes in the middle of an economic downturn – as former President Herbert Hoover did immediately following the stock market crash of 1929 with The Revenue Act of 1932.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Announce Dueling Marches on Washington

The liberal media just can’t stand all the attention Glenn Beck got for his “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington, D.C., last month. On Thursday, left-leaning comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert announced dueling marches on our nation’s capital to take place three days before Election Day. Stewart is calling his the ” Rally to Restore Sanity ,” and Colbert’s is the ” March to Keep Fear Alive .” The “Daily Show” host was first to announce his event (videos follow with commentary): The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c Rally to Restore Sanity www.thedailyshow.com Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party About a half an hour later, Colbert announced his own rally (relevant section at 2:30): The Colbert Report Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c March to Keep Fear Alive www.colbertnation.com Colbert Report Full Episodes 2010 Election Fox News Are these just publicity stunts to mock Beck or the real deal? Consider that this story has been a featured headline at Google News for well over an hour with over 300 outlets reporting it. As such, it seems a metaphysical certitude these rallies will be covered with far more enthusiasm and excitement than the media showed for Beck’s event. The only question is how well attended they will be. Stay tuned.

John Stewart and Stephen Colbert Schedule Competing Rallies in D.C.

The Daily Show host John Stewart announced plans for a “Return to Sanity” march October 30 in Washington D.C. which will attempt to tone down the constant political fervor we’re used to from politicians and pundits. “Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement,” Stewart said. On the same day, Stephen Colbert will hold a competing “March to Keep Fear Alive” which will advance the same message except, you know, through satire. Sounds like fun, but are competing rallies really possible when both shows have the exact same fan base? [ Rally to Restore Sanity , Keep Fear Alive ]

Lil Wayne’s Spirits Lifted By Brett Favre’s Prayers

‘Brett reached out, and he made sure I told Wayne that,’ Young Money’s Mack Maine tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne Photo: Derrick G Celebrity Favorites: Lil Wayne He’ll miss a little over a month, but if things go according to schedule, Lil Wayne will be out of prison in time to catch most of the NFL season. Last week, the season kicked off with Wayne’s home team, Super Bowl champions the New Orleans Saints, beating Weezy’s favorite player, Brett Favre, and the Minnesota Vikings. As Young Money President Mack Maine told MTV News recently, Weezy is elated that Favre didn’t hang up his shoulder pads and go into retirement. “He’s loving that,” Maine said of Wayne’s feelings about Favre’s decision to play his 20th year in the league. “That gives [Wayne] more incentive to watch this year, because that’s his favorite player. Shout-out to Brett too. Brett reached out, and he made sure I told Wayne that. That was the first thing [Brett] asked when he got back to camp, really. [Vikings tackle] Bryant McKinnie is one of our friends, B-Mac. [Favre] asked B-Mac, ‘How you been?’ B-Mac answered. And he was like, ‘How’s Wayne?’ That was his second question to B-Mac. Those two are real good friends. He said, ‘Let [Wayne] know I been praying for him and send him my love.’ So I let Wayne know that. He said, ‘You just brightened my spirits up for the rest of the month.’ He was real excited.” Maine said he thinks #4 should have another stellar season — just as long as he has security. “I think Favre should be good,” Mack said of the future Hall of Famer. “The offensive line gotta make sure they protect him. They don’t need him getting beat like that.” It’s safe to say we’ll see Wayne somewhere watching the field this year after he’s released in November. Mack said the Fireman will also be courtside watching the NBA’s most-talked-about team. “Wayne’s pretty excited,” Mack said, bringing up the Miami Heat’s dream team of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. “And you know we live in Miami. We’ll be going to those Heat games too. I had to throw that in there. LeBron, we got our floor seats already. D. Wade. Bosh!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, Rick Ross

Pentagon Admits to Having WikiLeaks War Room as it Readies for New Document Dump

As WikiLeaks prepares a new dump of secret war documents, the feds’ intel SWAT team races to do damage control. Philip Shenon reports on its leader and its inner workings. In a nondescript suite of government offices not far from the Pentagon, nearly 120 intelligence analysts, FBI agents, and others are at work—24 hours a day, seven days a week—on the frontlines of the government’s secret war against WikiLeaks. Dubbed the WikiLeaks War Room by some of its occupants, the round-the-clock operation is on high alert this month as WikiLeaks and its elusive leader, Julian Assange, threaten to release a second batch of thousands of classified American war logs from Afghanstan. Thousands more leaked documents from another American war zone—Iraq—are also reportedly slated for release by WikiLeaks this fall. “I do not have time to correct all the lies and distortions that are issued each day by the tabloid press and others who should know better,” Assange said in an email. Although outsiders have not been allowed to inspect the “war room” in suburban Virginia and see its staff at work, national-security officials offered details of the operation to The Daily Beast, including the identity of the counterintelligence expert who has been put in charge: Brig. General Robert A. Carr of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Officials say Carr, handpicked for the assignment by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, is highly respected among his colleagues at DIA, the Pentagon’s equivalent of the CIA, and a fitting adversary to Assange, the nomadic Australian-born computer hacker who founded WikiLeaks and is now believed to be in Sweden. “I wouldn’t want to go up against General Carr,” a Pentagon official said. “Very smart guy.” Carr served in Afghanistan for much of last year before his transfer to the DIA in Washington, where he runs the Defense Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Center. In his battle against Assange, officials say, Carr’s central assignment is to try to determine exactly what classified information might have been leaked to WikiLeaks, and then to predict whether its disclosure could endanger American troops in the battlefield, as well as what larger risk it might pose to American foreign policy. Rick Ross Buries Twitter Feud With ‘Fire’ Slim Thug Collabos

‘I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters,’ Ross tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross says he didn’t fire shots. It was just a rap reference that he had no intention of putting out anyway. A couple of weeks ago, a track leaked to the mixtape circuit and the Internet labeled “King Boss.” Mr. Rozay rapped on the song, “She dated Slim Thug, but now she f— with me/ She finally made it to the biggest boss luckily.” Slim Thugger quickly took to his Twitter page with a question — and a retort. “WTF @rickyrozay is that a diss?” Slim wrote. “Just threw @rickyrozay cd out the roof of the coupe haters get no play in my ride.” Well, before things got too far out of hand, Ross and Thugger talked , hammered out the misunderstanding and actually banged out a couple of new, official songs. One of them, “Paid the Cost,” is out now. “First of all, I wanna salute the homie, Slim Thugga,” Ross said on Saturday in Los Angeles during the MTV VMA Radio Forum. “Maybe two weeks ago, a record had surfaced that I recorded before I even met Slim Thug. Just not knowing the dude and made the record and, after the fact, maybe four or five years later, the record leaked. He responded in a way that was totally understandable. What was funny about that situation is that Slim Thug is actually an artist that after I met him, embraced me and showed me the most love. The homie, Slim Thug, and I gotta salute the homie, Trae Tha Truth.” Ross said that Slim and Trae always roll out the red carpet for him when he goes to H-Town. “For a record to surface and me being a little slow on Twitter, I didn’t really peep it until two days later,” Ross continued. “When I found out about it and heard about it, they said I’m dissing Slim Thug. ‘What’s the name of the record? “King Boss”?’ he remembered asking. “I never had a record called ‘King Boss.’ I just left it alone. After the fact, [Slim] asked me about it. I told the homie, ‘Of course it ain’t nothing but love between me and you, big dawg.’ We got in the studio, later that night. The night we spoke. I emailed him something; shot him something, did something for his album. It’s fire. Then I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Slim Thug

Conservative Funders Furious Over New Yorker Hit Piece

Conservative businessman David Koch told Elaine Lafferty of  The Daily Beast that a recent hit piece in The New Yorker has him steaming. “It’s hateful. It’s ludicrous. And it’s plain wrong.” The object of his ire is a 9,963 word story in The New Yorker magazine, published last week which accuses David, his brother Charles, and Koch Industries of…well, just about everything: Secretly funding the Tea Party movement, secretly manipulating the Smithsonian, along with, not-so-secretly polluting the planet, stealing oil from Native American land, denying the existence of climate change, and promoting carcinogens — all in the self-interest of making further billions. The title of Jane Mayer’s story is “Covert Operations.” That upsets Koch: “If what I and my brother believe in, and advocate for, is secret, it’s the worst covert operation in history,” Koch says, in reference to the New Yorker headline, adding that a lengthy letter to the magazine, rebutting nearly every allegation in the story is in the works… The origins of “the Billionaire who Secretly Funds the Tea Party” narrative seems to be his connection to Americans for Prosperity, an organization he founded six years ago, whose message is indeed aligned with the Tea Party movement’s message of less tax and more-efficient government. But, he says, no one from the Tea Party movement has ever approached him for money, and when I ask him straight up if he’s funding the Tea Party, all he says is, “Oh, please .” But despite being demonized by liberal magazines and the Obama White House, David Koch isn’t uniformly conservative in his political donations: While they have been politically active for more than 30 years, largely funding Republicans, they have never been identified with conservatives on hot-button issues such as gay marriage or abortion. He and his wife Julia have contributed $74,900 to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s Democratic campaign for governor, according to Ira Stoll at www.FutureofCapitalism.com. Politico.com reported that KochPac has contributed $196,000 to Democrats in the 2010 election cycle alone, including $30,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Lafferty noted that none these accusations — “covertly supporting the Tea Party movement, polluting the planet, stealing oil and being a climate-change denier” — bother him as much as the suggestion that his position as a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board, an arm of the National Cancer Institute, presents a “conflict of interest” because Koch Industries has lobbied against the classification of formaldehyde as a carcinogen. Koch has struggled with prostate cancer for 20 years. A statement the Koch brothers put out included these paragraphs: We provided the New Yorker with a tremendous amount of information in hopes it would enable the publication to produce a balanced and accurate portrayal of our company. Unfortunately, that information was largely omitted or ignored, resulting in inaccuracies and misstatements. A catalog of all these errors would take up more space than the article itself. For a more accurate review of the issues, please go to www.kochfacts.com … Unfortunately, some of those who disagree with a market-based point of view continue to try to demonize the Kochs’ 40 years of unwavering, well-known, lawful and principled commitment to economic freedom and market-based policy solutions. The Kochs have steadfastly supported the benefits of economic freedom, the importance of the rule of law, private property rights, the proper and limited role of government in society and warned against the perils of excessive government spending. We see escalating efforts to discount and mischaracterize important and authentic citizen efforts, as well as dismiss and degrade our support of education and human services programs. The New Yorker article, and those pieces that have echoed it, rely heavily on innuendo and unsubstantiated assertions. Unnamed sources and those with a strong philosophical opposition to the Kochs – many of whom have no current or first-hand knowledge of Koch Industries, Charles Koch or David Koch – go unchallenged. Supporters of the Kochs are largely ignored (as evidenced by the fact that the reporter chose not to include the vast majority of supportive comments made by a number of people who know the Kochs and were interviewed for this article). On the other hand, those who support the reporter’s preconceptions are given a free pass.

Scarlett Johansson for Mango of the Day

I never really got sucked into the Scarlett Johansson hype. I always saw a chunky, uninteresting girl with big enough tits and a nice enough face to look at, but nothing nearly as amazing as everyone seemed to think she was….she has flaws I just can’t ignore…unless of course I was dealing with them face to face, but since I’m not, I’ll judge her. Sure she’s hot, I’d be an idiot to say she isn’t, but I can say she’s nothing special, I see girls as equally good on the daily and maybe I just have fucked up ideas of what makes a bitch hot or not….but I’m pretty sure she was a product of major fucking marketing…what I call big titty hype that got dudes excited….more than anything….cuz she has been consistently boring as fuck to watch….Never any drunken episode, nip slips or sex tapes, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s a sign of a bitch who thinks she’s too good and more important than she is. Fuck her. But she photoshops well, so I figured I’d put these pictures up anyway.

Snoop Dogg, DPGC Reminisce About Doggystyle Before Sequel

‘ Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again,’ Snoop tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Snoop Dogg Photo: Getty Images Cornerstone Credentials: Snoop Dogg and the DPGC A few days ago, Snoop Dogg announced that his next LP will be Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. And while the 1515 Boys can’t claim 100 percent responsibility for Don Kinging the situation, we’ll take a little credit. A couple of weeks ago, during Rock the Bells rehearsals, the big homie Sway put it in the air while talking to Snoop, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, RBX and Warren G. When Sway asked Snoop if having his crew back together for the concerts meant getting everyone back on one album again, the Dogg said: “Nothing can stop that. The rebirth! It’s done. We’re gonna try to be out before Detox so we can help Dr. Dre speed up the process.” Having the old gang in tow sparked plenty of memories for Snoop about the original album, his debut solo classic. “The Chronic album, we felt that was our album,” Snoop thought back. “We gave Dr. Dre our full attention and our soul and devotion. Everything we wanted to say, we said. He gave us the platform to do that. So we felt that was our album. Then when Doggystyle came out, we felt like it was our record again. ‘We get to do it with Snoop and he’s gonna really involve us. He’s not gonna be like Dr. Dre and be such a perfectionist. Snoop’s gonna bring us all in the studio and Dre is gonna fine-tune it and make it sound like how it’s supposed to sound.’ A lot of records didn’t sound like they sound on the album in the beginning. Warren G brought a lot of tracks to the table that were halfway right. Dre made ’em all the way right. Same with Daz, same with other producers. … Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again. We followed that up with Tha Dogg Pound album and ‘Murder Was the Case’ soundtrack.” Snoop officially announced Swizz Beatz as a producer on the album, and the way the love was flowing with Dogg and his musical family, we’re already anticipating the DPGC as guests, just like the old days. “This is nostalgia,” Rage said. “It’s like going back to Solar Studios. Popeye’s Chicken on the corner. Eight of us sharing a three-piece meal. Smoking, drinking, fussing! Not too much fussin’. I’m beatboxing, Snoop’s rhyming. Daz rhyming. Kurupt’s rhyming. RBX. When RBX came on the set, he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m signed to Death Row.’ I was like, ‘Who said so?’ I was all defensive and sh–, like, ‘Now everybody wants to be on Death Row. Who are you?’ Little did I know.” “The battles were epic, man,” RBX offered about the siblings’ ciphers. “I used to crave that. It kept you sharp. Me watching all the old kung fu flicks, I always felt like you had to stay sharp and that was through walking through the fire. Whether it be Snoop walking through the fire and I’m judging. Kurupt walking through the fire … ” “Me, I was into eating people alive,” Kurupt jumped in. “If Dogg said get ’em, I got ’em. It’s over. Game of death.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Snoop Dogg DPGC
