Robert Pattinson Takes Over NYC

New York might be the city that never sleeps, but it sure knows how to scream when Robert Pattinson is in town. The actor stopped by Today yesterday for an interview with Matt Lauer and will sit down with Jon Stewart tonight on The Daily Show . In between, the Twilight Saga star – in town to promote Remember Me – stopped and signed autographs for an adoring public. He couldn’t even wait to do so, sprinting to meet them. Run, Robert, run! In the Lauer interview, posted below, Pattinson comes across as grounded and good-humored. He makes a good point about his controversial Details magazine interview , saying critics get on you if you’re too boring… and also give you a hard time when you say something scandalous. It’s impossible to win. Rob also admits that he wouldn’t give interviews if it wasn’t part of his job, seeming like someone that truly loves being an actor, yet is not obsessed with being a celebrity. How refreshing! Check it out now: Robert on Today

A Formal Offer of Employment for John Mayer, Gawker Columnist [Offers]

On Friday evening, John Mayer publicly apologized to a gathered “at capacity” audience for the recent kerfuffle over his Playboy interview. We would like to now take this time to finally extend a formal employment offer for Mr. Mayer. Dear John – We recently got wind of your apology at Madison Square Garden (“The Garden”) on Friday, February 26, 2009, sometime in the evening, during one of your performances. You explained to the audience before you, and we quote (via the New York Daily News ): “I hate to come off like an a—hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a—hole,” he said. “It’s a clean me now, people, clean me….Never, ever, in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a—hole…But you know what? There’s plenty of a—holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” The article was entitled: John Mayer attempts to rescue his shamed reputation by apologizing – again – for being an ‘a—hole’. Let us assure you, Mr. Mayer, that your reputation for what noted, established urban sociologist Robert Sylvester Kelly once established as ” Real Talk ” has been violently misconstrued; the multitude of your talents has been, in a word, steamrolled. We see them differently. Particularly, as they were intended . It was once noted: ” If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. ” George Washington said that. And the next person to say the next thing to be quoted in our next recruitment letter can—and should—be you. Why? Because that shit was funny . But an explosive reaction ensued for various reasons, chief among them: the words weren’t entirely coming from you. There was a middleman involved. Sure, you said them. And you took responsibility for them. But you didn’t write them. And you weren’t in control of the context. Which, regardless of the words within, were notably legion . Even the writer of the interview, Rob Tannenbaum, noted: The article is long and it’s complicated. It’s 6,870 words total. Holly Robinson Peete, an actress Mayer mentioned in the interview, called it on her blog “quite possibly one of the longest interviews ever published.” Which isn’t a fact (Playboy publishes an interview of that length every month), but it is a feeling. Articles are much shorter now. So are sentences. Who has time to read 6,870 words? If you just thought to yourself, Not many people! you’re correct. Enter the blog post. Short. Concise. Or shorter and more concise than other things people don’t take time to read. If you could go back and make “Split Screen Sadness” a better song, would you? Maybe. Maybe not. But you can’t . You know what’s nice about blogging? You can . Just ask Nikki Finke . But you probably wouldn’t make that mistake. Given your record of saying things that may offend people, you’re not “batting well.” Given your record of blogging, you’re 1.000 . As previously noted, your takedown of the celebrity paparazzi paraphernalia leech-economy complex was masterful. Your call-to-action against conspicuous media consumption was, in a word, inspired , plunging one of our writers into a bout of insecure paranoia . A good columnist can do this! This all goes without mentioning that everyone thinks you already work for us anyway . Jobs in this media economy are scarce , Mr. Mayer. Your reputation and talent for producing excellent editorial web content—and demonstration of a natural ability for creative prose—can be combined for what we see as a mutually beneficial relationship: an ability for you to get your message out to a wider audience, control it, and grow creatively. With that, the Weekend Gawker Services division of Gawker Dot Com, a Gawker Media property, would like to extend a formal offer of employment for you to join us as a guest columnist. We’ll pay you our regular columnist rate, which, upon receipt notification of this agreement , we’ll discuss further. But one thing’s certain: you can stop apologizing, and start being proactive. We’re in a troubling economy, our talents, diverse as they are, should all be put to good use. For you, for readers, for America. Basically, stop being a pussy and write for us. Or at the very least, get a new publicist. For fuck’s sake. We look forward to hearing from you, and for the fruits this beautiful editorial relationship will bear. So long as they don’t involve any literal incarnations of your penis. Regards, Foster Kamer Vice President of Editorial Content – Weekend Gawker Gawker.com FK/ym DBNR CC: Remy Stern

Jay Electronica Praises Soulja Boy, Reveals Project With Nas

‘You can expect multiple projects this year,’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jay Electronica The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive The reception Jay Electronica has been getting from fans during his U.K. tour has been just as enthusiastic as his feedback Stateside. Fans and critics still love “Exhibit C” and some of Jay’s other underground gems. People are clamoring for the street CD Act II and the official LP Act III, and Jay said he’s going to deliver both of those projects and more this year. “It’s still Act II. Act III, the official album, which ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit C’ are a part of [as well as] ‘Dear Moleskin,’ ” Jay said in Europe earlier this week. “Me and Mos [Def] have a project that we’re doing, me and Guilty Simpson have a project that we’re doing. I would like to do a project with Lupe — [Fiasco] we’re going to do a project at some point. Me and Nas have a project that we’re doing . I’m just trying. I’m in the process of working and connecting. I don’t really feel like a song or an album is the end-all, be-all to what we’re doing. “You can expect my album this year,” he added. “You can expect multiple projects this year. We’re going to do a lot this year.” Electronica is focused on responsibilities outside of rap, including raising a baby daughter with singer Erykah Badu. “Dealing with a lot personally, that not necessarily takes me away from my music, because it comes through in my music as well. But as a person trying to grow and figure out how to handle things, learn and be a man — all that’s a part of the process too. It’s hard to put a release date on those type of things when you’re factoring those things in.” The New Orleans native said that “Exhibit A” producer Just Blaze will produce 65 percent of his solo debut. Jay’s commanding mic presence and wordplay have captured the ears of many, and he said he has no choice but to come with sustaining lyrics like “I make the devil hit his knees and say, ‘To our father’ ” — he’s a product of his golden-era-of-rap influences. “The lyricism in my music — I come from a different era,” he explained. “I was born in ’76. I was raised in the ’80s. I’m an ’80s baby. LL Cool J was the first person that inspired me to rhyme. I have a lot of bragging in my rhymes. LL was my first enlightenment. If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy … you would say he’s not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, ‘Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?’ People would say no, right? But it’s not the words, it’s energy of what he does that’s the lyrics. It’s not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . 50 Cent Sued For Posting Sex Tape During Rick Ross Beef

A Florida woman says 50 unlawfully distributed a video of her during one of his Ross disses. By Gil Kaufman 50 Cent Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images A Florida woman prominently featured in a homemade sex tape posted online by 50 Cent last year as part of his feud with Rick Ross has sued 50 (born Curtis Jackson) in New York City, claiming he unlawfully distributed the video over the Internet. According to The Associated Press, Lastonia Leviston filed the lawsuit on Wednesday in Manhattan, claiming unauthorized use of her name or image and emotional distress caused by the public release of a video she made with an unidentified man in 2008. In the tape, Leviston is seen showing off a tattoo on her chest with the initials “RR,” seemingly in reference to Ross, and 50 is heard providing exaggerated voice-over narration to the action in his wigged “Pimpin’ Curly” persona. In the lawsuit, Leviston claims the rapper posted the video on ThisIs50.com last year, blurring out the face of he man in the tape but not hers, and that 50 edited himself into the video. The New York Daily News, reported that Leviston claims she asked the man in the tape, Maurice Murray, to destroy it. He agreed, but then allegedly either gave or sold it to 50. In addition to airing on 50’s site, the video made it onto YouTube and other video-sharing sites and has been seen millions of times, the suit claims. Leviston also claims that 50 spoke about the video on a radio program and referred to her as a “call girl” in it. A spokesperson for 50 could not be reached for comment at press time. The release of the video was part of a long-running beef between 50 and Ross, which featured a number of dis-heavy mixtape songs , mocking animated videos and a clip in which 50 appeared with Tia Kemp , the mother of Ross’ son, who mocked her former partner. Yelawolf’s Hip-Hop Is ‘Heavily Influenced’ By Classic Rock

‘I picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Yelawolf Photo: Ghet-O-Vision Ent. Fire Starter: Yelawolf Gadsden, Alabama, isn’t exactly a hip-hop hotbed, but the small town, just east of Birmingham, might have the ambassador to put it on the map. Yelawolf (born Michael Wayne Atha) has been building quite the buzz with features on Slim Thug’s “I Run” and Juelz Santana’s “Mixin’ My Medicine,” but he’s been grinding for a minute and making a bigger name for himself thanks to his mixtapes, most recently Trunk Music. Yela was raised in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee by his single mother and was influenced by her musical interests. “I just picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to, like 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes,” he said. “She was actually dating a dude who was on tour with Aerosmith during the ‘Walk This Way’ tour who brought me back some of my Adidas T-shirts and [a tape of] ‘Paul Revere.’ Beastie Boys, that was my first taste of hip-hop.” Yela eventually decided to pursue a career in hip-hop, but he still loved classic rock. “I equally love both, classic rock and hip-hop. I love all music, really, and I really use classic rock a lot,” he said. “I’m heavily influenced by that melodically in my music. I can’t really separate the two.” Yela said he was also influenced by the grit and grime of the neighborhoods he lived in. For every Lynyrd Skynyrd album, there was a Three 6 Mafia, Skinny Pimp, Outkast or UGK record too. “Where I’m from is like ‘Hustle & Flow’ versus ‘8 Mile.’ It’s that really grimy, box-Chevy, dope-boy, working-class music.” Before breaking through in music, Yela decided to pursue skateboarding. He moved to Berkeley, California, but he eventually found himself at food drives with homeless people. Amid a slew of skating-related injuries, Wolf decided to focus his efforts on rap. He took to the mixtapes. Ball of Flames, his tribute to “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” was the first to come out. Talladega is only 20 minutes from his house. Then he dropped his underground gem, Stereo, with DJ Ideal. The mixtape was a hip-hop tribute to classic rock, and it received five cigars in Ozone magazine (the equivalent of Source ‘s five mics). He followed that up with the EP Arena Rap, which featured a full band, including a fiddle and banjo player. Finally, at the top of the year, came Trunk Music, which showed people he could really rap. “I felt like people were waiting for me to rap, and I was hungry to do it again,” said Yelawolf, who also said he was taking his time with his debut LP. “We had just been experimenting with the band sound. I just was hungry to rap over 808s and high-hats and really just do some double-time drive records. It was just a passion.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, LeBron James, Lil Wayne, More
