Well, this is unexpected. In case you’re somehow unaware, the new Clint Eastwood-Bradley Cooper film American Sniper is a massive hit with audiences, but its also drawn a good deal of criticism, in part because large portions of Chris Kyle’s memoirs – on which the film was based – are believed to be fabricated. Michael Moore referred to snipers as cowards and is still subjected to daily Twitter hate as a result. Seth Rogen compared the film to Nazi propaganda and the actor received swift and immediate backlash. Eastwood has been largely silent on the subject, so it was somewhat surprising when he decided to offer his two cents to a TMZ cameraman last night. It’s really surprising when you hear what he had to say: Clint Eastwood Talks American Sniper Yes, Squinty Clint seems to agree with those who have claimed that the film is not without its problematic elements. It’s possible that Eastwood just misunderstood the question, but it’s equally possible that he meant what he said, and that his film is being used to support political ideologies with which he doesn’t agree. Anyone who’s seen at the RNC knows that Clint is a card-carrying Republican, but he’s generally moderate and often left-leaning in his politics. Eastwood has been openly critical of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and though he’s clearly a supporter of the troops, it’s not surprising that he might object to some warhawks finding a message in Sniper that’s not really there. Or, it could be that he acknowledges that Kyle made some questionable claims in his autobiography and you’re not necessarily disparaging an American hero if you point out that Kyle didn’t really snipe looters after Katrina or beat up Governor Jesse Ventura. Or maybe Clint’s just defending the right of his critics to openly express their thoughts on his film. After all, Clint is pretty much the quintessential American, and what’s more American than freedom of speech? In the wake of a controversy over how he misled viewers regarding an incident in the Iraq War, the anchor announced on Saturday that he’s taking a leave of absence from his post. “In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions,” Williams said via statement. He added: “As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. “Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.” The scandal surrounding Williams began during a January 30 broadcast,, when he erroneously claimed his helicopter was hit by a grenade in March 2003 as he covered the Iraq War. Williams apologized on air last Wednesday. Since then, the network has opened an internal investigation into his coverage of the war and other major events, including Hurricane Katrina. ESPN recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton is in hot water (emphasis on HOT!) after he directed Twitter followers to something a little off topic this week. While offering an update on ESPN’s 29th ranked football recruit in the country, Roquan Smith, Hamilton accidentally tweeted out a link to … a porn site. Hamilton’s instantly infamous Tweet, which was supposed to be about Smith’s visits to several of the big football schools courting his services, read: “#ESPN300 No. 29 Roquan Smith schedules Texas A&M OV Jan. 23. #UCLA Jan. 30. Already visited #UGA & #Michigan. #Gigem pornhub.com/view_video.php…” The college sports expert seemingly meant to link to the Montezuma, Ga., player’s highlight video, but clearly posted a link to a different video altogether. The analyst then corrected his error and posted the same tweet, only with a link to Smith highlights on ESPN’s site. But many of his followers noticed. Some were even disappointed he took down the original . Hamilton was quickly bombarded with comedic tweets like, “Can you send us that porn hub link again?” and “Are you sure that wasn’t the correct link?” Amusingly and accurately, more than a few fans noted that in order to paste the porn link, Hamilton had to have previously copied it from somewhere. In other words, he was clearly watching PornHub, and either copied that URL instead of the ESPN one, or had previously sent the PornHub link to someone else. As the debate over whether or not leggings or yoga pants are acceptable attire to wear (beyond working out, obviously) rages on, Veronica has made her choice. Her article explaining why has been shared tens of thousands of times on social media. Via NY Daily News reports: The Rev. Al Sharpton thinks the Oscars should be nominated for a prize itself: worst display of diversity in a major awards ceremony. The outspoken civil rights activist said Thursday that it was “appallingly insulting in the year of 2015″ that the 20 Academy Awards acting nominations went only to white actors and actresses. “In the time of Staten Island and Ferguson, to have one of the most shutout Oscar nights in recent memory is something that is incongruous,” Sharpton told The News. The list of Oscar nominations, announced early Thursday morning, was bashed for the lack of diversity in most major categories. The slate marked only the second time since 2000 that no black actors or actresses were nominated. Among the most notable snubs was David Oyelowo, who was widely praised for his portrayal as the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma,” but was not nominated in the best actor category, and Ava DuVernay, who directed the same movie, but was not nominated for best director. DuVernay would have made history by having been the first African-American woman nominated in the category. Sharpton, who says he’ll meet next week with allies and colleagues to discuss “potential actions” before or during the nationally televised Feb. 22 award ceremony, was quick to point out the irony of the “Selma” double-snub. “The only category we’re well represented is in the best picture nomination and it’s a movie about blacks being shut out of society,” he said, noting that the film was nominated for the night’s highest honor. “And now we’re shut out of Hollywood.” Slow clap for Permed Up Al.
