One person was killed and another was in custody after a shooting at Purdue University Tuesday, according to the Indiana school’s police chief, John Cox. The gunman reportedly walked into a room at the school’s electrical engineering department “with the intention of harming someone,” then walked out. After the shooting, he gave himself up to a West Lafayette, Ind., police officer. Purdue Shooting Cox and Purdue Provost Timothy Sands confirmed the fatality at a news conference hours after the incident led to an alert that shut down the campus. The alert was lifted two hours after the shooting, added Cox, who told reporters that the suspect appeared to have targeted the unidentified victim. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said in a statement: “Today’s shooting at Purdue University is a tragedy, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim and to everyone in the Purdue community.” “I commend the professionalism of the Purdue University Police Department in apprehending the suspect and bringing the situation to a swift conclusion.” “The Indiana State Police are on the scene and will continue to assist local law enforcement with the ongoing investigation,” Pence added. The incident began about noon local time with reports of shots being fired at the Electrical Engineering Building on the northeast side of campus. The university posted an alert on its website, but by 1:15 p.m., the school had canceled the alert, assuring the community that the area was secure.

Yesterday it was announced that Twitter plans to capitalize on its racially diverse user base. According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, black, Hispanic, and Asian-American users account for 41 percent of Twitter’s 54 million users. For some, this might seem like a revelation. For others, this is old news. Over the last seven years, as Twitter has become deeply embedded into our daily lives, Black Twitter, too, has grown into a cultural phenomenon of sorts. We first wrote about the social network’s subgroup in 2012, and have since covered the community time and again. From #PaulasBestDishes to #BlackBuzzFeed, Black Twitter has consistently provided an outlet to air grievances (the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman trial), analyze new shows (Scandal, Drake on SNL), and shoot the shit with friends. “Perhaps the most significant contribution of Black Twitter is that it increases visibility of black people online, and in doing so, dismantles the idea that white is standard and everything else is ‘other,’” wrote Soraya Nadia McDonald for the Washington Post. “It’s a radical demand for acceptance by simply existing—or sometimes dominating—in a space and being yourself, without apology or explanation.” That Twitter decided to hire marketing veteran Nuria Santamaria as its multicultural strategist to help better target black, Hispanic and Asian-American users may or may not be the solution to increasing engagement among non-white users. “Maybe Twitter doesn’t know how to talk about Black Twitter,” wondered Nitasha Tiku. Retired Tampa police officer Curtis Reeves, 71, was arrested and charged with second-degree homicide in the attack at the The Grove 16 theater complex in Wesley Chapel, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Department. Police said Nicole and Chad Oulson were seated in front of Reeves and his wife when Chad Oulson made the fatal mistake of pulling out his cell phone during the previews to send text messages. When Oulson refused to put his phone away, despite several requests from Reeves, Reeves pulled out a handgun and shot Chad Oulson in the chest, according to police. Oulson’s wife, who was holding her hand on his chest when the single shot was fired, was also injured by the single bullet. The two victims were transported to a Tampa area hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. “It’s absolutely crazy that it would rise to something like this over someone texting,” Sheriff Chris Nocco told the Tampa Bay Times. According to NY Daily News: A Georgia woman found out her boyfriend was cheating on her — so she stabbed him. Randi Marie Houser, 30, of Athens, was charged with aggravated assault by the Athens-Clarke County police for allegedly stabbing her 30-year-old boyfriend, according to OnlineAthens.com. The stabbing occurred after the boyfriend, who was not identified, asked Houser for a ride to work, but Houser did not want to get out of bed. He then pulled the blanket back and Houser attacked him, saying he could call “one of his other women,” the outlet reported. She then drove him to the hospital instead to treat internal injuries. The victim told medical staff he was injured by a piece of glass on the floor, but after Houser admitted to the stabbing to police he said she had recently caught him cheating. The boyfriend suffered internal injuries near his lung, the website reported. You know you’re crazy when you stab a person with one hand and use the other to drive them to the hospital. According to NY Daily News: A 4-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in the care of a baby-sitter in a Hell’s Kitchen apartment Wednesday — and his body was marked by cigarette burns and defensive wounds, police sources said. Police found Myles Dobson unresponsive when they arrived at the apartment in the Ritz Plaza, a luxury doorman building on W. 48th St., near Eighth Ave., following a 911 call at 10:50 a.m., police said. The boy was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital. The baby-sitter, a 37-year-old woman, was interviewed by detectives for several hours, the sources said. She said she heard a noise, ran back into the bathroom, and found the boy in the tub, unconscious, the sources said. There was no water in the tub, sources said. Investigators had questions about the woman’s story, because the child’s skin was pocked with burns that were consistent with being poked with a lit cigarette, and his body had wounds that appeared to have been sustained while he tried to defend himself, sources said. His body was also bruised, the sources said. “It looks like we’re going to charge her,” a police source told the Daily News, cautioning that a decision had not been made because the investigation had just begun. “It’s too early.” Her story smells fishy. Google’s daily Doodle, the digital image that greets billions of visitors to the site each day, honored Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston yesterday on what would have been her 123rd birthday. Decked out in a olive green feathered cap and framed by an idyllic Everglades scene, the author’s visage rested on Google’s home page throughout the day. Sophia Foster-Dimino, the San Francisco-based artist behind the Google Doodle, said she was inspired by the author’s legacy. “She brought an incredible wealth of witty, heartfelt prose to our literary history,” said Foster-Dimino. “We’re overjoyed to celebrate her life and accomplishments today.” Hurston, best known for her seminal novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” was born in Florida on Jan. 7, 1891, but she moved to New York in 1925 with only $1.50 to her name. She soon became friends with Langston Hughes and Dorothy West. Carla Kaplan, a professor of American Literature at Northeastern University and author of “Zora Neale Hurston: A Life in Letters,” said the author and anthropologist would be “so tickled” to be praised in such a modern way. “She was a very private woman who loved publicity,” Kaplan said, adding that Hurston often found herself “wanting others to see that she had a glean or a shine.” Hurston’s life in Harlem was often stranger than fiction – the scribe once “borrowed” money from a homeless beggar for a subway fare, claiming she needed the money “worse than you today.” She died in poverty in a Florida welfare center in 1960. “She was always more interested in recognition than she was with money,” Kaplan said. This is huge for Google to celebrate Zora Neale Hurston in this way. Hopefully, this leads to the company paying tribute to more influential African Americans.
