The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Nearly a month after its Oscar-qualifying run found it alienating critics in New York and Los Angeles (and almost two months since indelibly, ignominiously entering the zeitgeist as The Daldry ), this week finally finds Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close reaching theaters nationwide. And while roughly half of reviewers to date have lauded director Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel, the other half has issues — big issues — with everything from lead actor Thomas Horn to Daldry’s handling of the book’s central tragedy of 9/11. It’s no Jack and Jill , but that’s no reason not to throw on a raincoat and go frolic in the bile. Wish you were here, David Denby ! 9. “Despite its overweening literary pretensions, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is about as artistically profound as those framed 3-D photos of the Twin Towers emblazoned with ‘Never Forget’ that are still for sale in Times Square a decade after 9/11. It’s Oscar-mongering of the most blunt and reprehensible sort.” — Lou Lumenick , NY Times 8. “Poor little Oskar! Such an adorable, pint-sized heap of neuroses. What better mouthpiece for an author, or a filmmaker, to use as a way of exploring the personal cost of a great communal tragedy. Do you get the idea that Oskar must emerge from his own teeny-tiny personal prison and, yes, embrace the world? Never has the tragedy of 9/11 been made so shrinky-dinked.” — Stephanie Zacharek , Movieline 7. ” Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close isn’t about Sept. 11. It’s about the impulse to drain that day of its specificity and turn it into yet another wellspring of generic emotions: sadness, loneliness, happiness. This is how kitsch works. It exploits familiar images, be they puppies or babies — or, as in the case of this movie, the twin towers — and tries to make us feel good, even virtuous, simply about feeling . And, yes, you may cry, but when tears are milked as they are here, the truer response should be rage.” — Manohla Dargis , NY Times 6. “Oskar is a nasty piece of work. On that dreadful day, Oskar comes home early from school. He hears his father’s voice messages. He hides them from his mother, Linda (Sandra Bullock). He denies her listening to Tom tell her he loves her. Oskar is selfish. He sneaks out and buys an identical answering machine, records the identical outgoing message, and keeps the old one for himself. He counts his lies. Oskar has ‘head-up-his-ass’ platitudes and has read too much Jean-Paul Sartre.” — Victoria Alexander , Film Festival Today 5. “Almost half a century after Dallas, I still have trouble watching film of President Kennedy’s assassination. Yet Stephen Daldry’s screen version of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel, adapted by Eric Roth, proves hard to handle for other reasons. The production’s penchant for contrivance is insufferable —- not a single spontaneous moment from start to finish -— and the boy is so precocious you want to strangle him.” — Joe Morgenstern , Wall Street Journal 4. “Mixing the horror of 9/11 with a cutesy story about a boy’s unlikely quest just comes off as crass. Throwing a tragic old man on top — to no apparent purpose, really — cheapens things further. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is the kind of movie you want to punch in the nose.” — Tom Long , The Detroit News 3. “[I]t will always be ‘too soon’ for Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close , which processes the immense grief of a city and a family through a conceit so nauseatingly precious that it’s somehow both too literary and too sentimental, cloying yet aestheticized within an inch of its life. It’s 9/11 through the eyes of a caffeinated 9-year-old Harper’s contributor. GRADE: F” — Scott Tobias , AV Club 2. “Thomas Horn is a terrible actor; I don’t want to call him annoying because that might be the way Oskar is written, but dammit, I wanted to throttle the twerp pretty much for the whole movie. This film is so spectacularly bad that the bar for pretentious, deep-thoughts movies has been lowered roughly the length of my middle finger.” — Capone , Ain’t it Cool News 1. “This is a film so thoroughly rotten to its smarmy and diseased little core that tearing into it here hardly seems an adequate method of dealing with it — going after the negative with battery acid and a sledgehammer might be closer to what it deserves. This is a film that takes one of the most terrible tragedies in our history and reduces it to a level of kitsch that makes a painting of the burning World Trade Center done on black velvet with a sad clown on the side bearing witness seem dignified by comparison.” — Peter Sobczynski , eFilmCritic Reviews via Rotten Tomatoes Follow S.T. This past summer the Dallas Mavericks went out of their way to sign talent that hasn’t been relevant in years. They let integral parts of their championship squad like Tyson Chandler, DeShawn Stevenson, and J.J. Barea walk for nada – only to replace them with the likes of Vince Carter and Delonte West. But Dallas’ mission to fill out their bench with big names from before Ricky Rubio was born didn’t… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Opposing Views Discovery Date : 11/01/2012 03:49 Number of articles : 3

Kim Kardashian Wasn’t ‘Replaced’ By Bulldog In Skechers Ad

Reality star won’t appear in new Super Bowl ad but Skechers CEO says claims that Kardashian was replaced are ‘misleading.’ By James Montgomery Kim Kardashian Photo: Marianna Massey/ WireImage Kim Kardashian won’t be featured in Skechers’ upcoming Super Bowl ad — that honor goes to a French bulldog — but that doesn’t mean she’s been replaced. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the shoe manufacturer had, uh, booted Kardashian as their spokesperson — she appeared in a steamy spot for Skechers’ Shape-Up shoe that aired during Super Bowl XLV — a move their president claimed was meant “to establish Skechers as more than a lifestyle company.” Of course, those reports also spawned a series of headlines suggesting Kardashian had been replaced in favor of the French bulldog (with some speculating her brief marriage to Kris Humphries was behind the decision). But according to Skechers’ CEO Robert Greenberg, that simply wasn’t the case. Instead (and less salaciously), the new commercial had everything to do with Kardashian’s contract with the company coming to an end. “Kim Kardashian has had a tremendously positive effect on the Skechers brand … she played a big part in Skechers moving up last year from 388 to 99 among companies with the highest brand trust,” Greenberg said in a statement . “While Kim’s contract with Skechers simply came to an end at the end of last year, we continue to have a great relationship with her … to say that she was ‘dropped’ or ‘replaced’ is misleading and untrue. Skechers has enjoyed and continues to enjoy the relationship with Kim, and in fact we continue to discuss ways that we may work together in the future.” Instead of Kardashian, this year’s Skechers Super Bowl spot features a French bulldog who dons the company’s new GOrun sneakers and races a pack of greyhounds. Strangely, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reportedly also makes a cameo. What do you think of Skechers bumping Kim K. from their Super Bowl spot? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Justin Bieber ‘Rap-Singing’ On New Lil Twist Collabo

‘Justin killed it,’ Twist tells MTV News of ‘Wherever You Are.’ By Rob Markman Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel / WireImage It’s been a long time coming for Lil Twist . The Young Money rap rookie was supposed to see his debut album Don’t Get It Twisted drop in 2011, but after a few false starts, the Dallas MC is looking forward to a March 20 release. Already, he has dropped a ton of singles and high-powered collaborations with Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and 2 Chainz. Next up, Justin Bieber . “We’re getting ready to drop that record ‘Wherever You Are.’ Y’all will have that real soon,” Lil Twist told MTV News of the high-powered collaboration. “It’s a fun record. Justin killed it. He’s, like, rap-singing on it; another different sound for Justin.” Twist, who built his fanbase thanks to pop-rap joints like “Little Secret” with Bow Wow and “Love Affair,” has been developing a harder edge lately. His recently released video for the Busta Rhymes-assisted “Turnt Up” focuses more on the 18-year old’s rap bars rather than his penchant for catchy hooks. His Golden Child mixtape, which he dropped in December, also shows a similar growth. But with “Wherever You Are,” Twist just promises a good time. “It’s gonna be great. It’s a cool summer record,” Twist told MTV News last August. “It’s a party song. Straight for the sun. It’s a Miami record.” While the record has been in the works for some time, Twist is almost ready to let to go. “Just me and Justin, people been waiting on that,” he said of his bond with the Biebs. “That’s my brother right there. It’s just been a long time coming. Now that we been had the record done, it’s time to put it out.” Are you anticipating Lil Twist’s “Wherever You Are,” featuring Justin Bieber? Wendy Williams Goes In On Fantasia & Her Married Man!

Read the rest here:

Despite how harsh, Wendy Williams can sometimes come across, her recent advice to Fantasia is dead on! Fantasia who just had a baby with Antwaun Cook,  who is separated from his wife but still very married, complained about Cook contributing financially to his and her relationship. If she expects a still married man, employed at T-Mobile to support her lifestyle, then she is crazier than most thought. Fanny who hasn’t had a hit record since…(we’ll wait) should listen to Wendy’s advice : “Fantasia, you knew he was married and unavailable to you when you started sleeping with him. A separated man does not make a single man; it means he’s separated. Fantasia, this wasn’t even a down-low relationship because you paraded him on the vacation where we all saw you all celebrating your ‘love.’ Fantasia, I dont know whether it was a broken condom or maybe you miscounted the days if you happen to take a pill, but all I’m saying is you had control over this entire situation and as a wife – and I always root for the wife – you were dead wrong in this one, Fantasia. “I would never say that you get what you deserve, but Fantasia, you haven’t sung in ages. You’ve got a family that we all saw on that great reality show that bloodsucks financially off of you and you weren’t in the position to have another child – especially with a married man who already has two kids who works at the T-Mobile store. Fantasia, he’s not gonna marry you because it’s cheaper not to divorce his own wife – unless you go multiplatinum in which case [you’re] not gonna marry him because [you] know he’s using [you.] “Fantasia, get back to work. Don’t count on him for much. Take him to court if you want. Good luck with everything.” Fantasia Has Baby Boy, Dallas Zavier Barrino Debbie Allen To Fantasia: “You’ve Got Too Many Leeches Around You” [VIDEO]

Armed Robber Robs Weave Shop “B_tch, My Girl Needs Some New Extensions… Which Ones Are The Best!?” [Video]

An employee of Main Beauty Supply in Dallas was caught off guard when a man robbing the store demanded hair extensions. Benitra Jackson said she was about to close for the night when a man wearing a mask burst into the store and, pointing a gun, demanded her and her manager to the floor. “He was just telling us to get down or he’ll shoot,” Jackson said. In surveillance video you can see the robber forcing the manager to the floor first, then turning on Jackson. “And then he threw me on the floor and told me to put the money in the bag. So I just threw the money in the bag then laid back down on the floor,” she said. Jackson said she gave the robber all of the money in the register, but he wanted more. “He was just saying ‘the change too,’ cause he had kids,” she said. After that, the robber had an even more unusual request — hair extensions. According to a police reporter, Jackson told officers the man said, “My b**** needs some hair extensions, which are the best ones?” “I was like, really?” said Jackson. “I wanted to laugh, but something was going on and I was in shock. So I was like why are you asking me about the most expensive hair extensions? So I just grabbed any kind for him.” Satisfied with the money — and the hair — the robber left. Jackson said she’s thankful everyone’s okay, but hopes to see the robber caught. When it comes to the hair extensions, Jackson is hoping for something else. “Well, I hope she doesn’t like them,” Jackson chuckled.

Kings Of Leon’s Caleb Followill Expecting First Child

‘We can’t wait to meet the new addition to our family,’ Followill and wife Lily Aldridge say in statement to MTV News. By James Montgomery Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill Photo: Getty Images Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge, are expecting their first child, a spokesperson for the band confirmed to MTV News on Thursday (December 29). “We are thrilled to announce that we are expecting our first child together,” the couple said in a statement. “We can’t wait to meet the new addition to our family.” The official confirmation comes one day after E! Online cited a source that said Aldridge was “approximately three months along” in her pregnancy. The two were married in May, at a ceremony held at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California after dating for more than two years. “It was the perfect day,” Followill said of the event. The announcement of the couple’s first child puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather interesting year for the Kings, who came into 2011 riding their Come Around Sundown album, feuded with “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy (who would subsequently apologize for calling the band “self-centered a–holes”) and released a well-received documentary, “Talihina Sky.” In the summer, after a much-publicized incident at a Dallas concert in which Followill claimed to suffer “heat exhaustion,” the band scrapped the remainder of their U.S. tour in support of Sundown , before returning to the road in September for a run of Canadian shows. They wrapped the year with a tour of Australia and a pair of Grammy nominations: A Best Rock Album nod for Sundown and a Best Long Form Music Video nom for “Talihina Sky.” Related Artists Kings Of Leon
